Workman, yes Workman, lands a big-timer
Workman, get ready for "El Mago," the Spanish kids magic man. Look at these handles from Cezar Guerrero, this kid is unbelievable and he's going to be a Lobo.

I can't believe what I just read in the L.A. times blog page. St. John Bosco point guard Cezar Guerrero told Times' reporters that he is leaving mighty St. John Bosco to play basketball at Workman High School, where he will compete in the mighty Montview League. All joking aside, this is great for the Lobos. The 5-foot-11 Guerrero is only going to be a sophomore, and is regarded by Division I scouts as one of the best prospects for 2011. As one scout noted, "He needs to work on his decision-making (tends to force it), but he's one of the more impressive freshman guards I've witnessed in the last 15 years."
As only a freshman, the point guard averaged nearly 17 points while orchestrating the offense for a veteran laden team. Guerrero has had some of his best games while playing for Bosco in the toughTrinity League, which features some of the best teams in the state like Mater Dei, Santa Margarita and Serra. Guerrero had 22 points against Serra and 19 against eventual state champs, Mater Dei.
You put Guerrero in the backcourt with sophomore Bobby Miles, who averaged more than 20 points a game and earned first team all-league honors and all of a sudden you've got the makings one one of the top teams in the San Gabriel Valley. Workman coach Martin Flores already had a talented young cast that coaches were wondering about, and Guerrero comes from his travel ball team. But now that he has enrolled at Workman, this could be the beginning of something. Can you imagine, the best two teams could be La Verne Lutheran and Workman! Anyway, this is what Guerrero had to say about his switch to the Lobos.
"I am very excited. I can't wait to get things started,'' Guerrero told the Times. "And I know people might be wondering why I left a big school like St. John Bosco for a smaller one like Workman. But the player makes the school. The school doesn't make the player. I'm ready to move on and succeed at Workman.
"I have nothing but good things to say about St. John Bosco. Everyone one there, all of the coaches, the players, they were all great,'' Guerrero said. "It came down to me and my family deciding that Workman would end up being a better place for me. It feels right, it feels like the right fit.''

This comes from the GBOA website ...
Cezar Guerrero is a name you might want to remember over the next few years. The sensational freshman for St. John Bosco in Bellflower, California is breaking out on to the national scene in a big way. As only a freshman, the 5'10 point guard averaged nearly 17 points while orchestrating the offense for a veteran laden team.
Guerrero has had some of his best games while playing in the extremely talented Trinity League which features some of the best teams in the state of California including Mater Dei, Santa Margarita and Serra. The point guard had 22 points against Serra and 19 against eventual league and state champs, Mater Dei.
Playing against older stronger competition is not something new for the youngster. From the age of 12, his older brother Joe had him playing against older opponents in men's leagues to gain experience.
"My idea was to have him play against bigger and stronger guys to eliminate any fear," said the older Guerrero. "I would bring him with me to play in leagues where he'd go up against guys who played professionally in Mexico. He was scoring 25 points against pro players."
Cezar's older brother's influence resulted in one of the most successful season's ever by a St. John Bosco player. As a freshman he was named to the Trinity League's All First Team, a first for a Bosco freshman. By playing against older opponents as a young kid, Guerrero was already prepared for the extreme competition he'd face every week going against Trinity League teams.
Guerrero is already turning the heads of many recruiters at several of the best college programs. Joe said they have received numerous letters and have been contacted by Notre Dame, Texas, Santa Clara and USC. After playing in the Elite Camp at UCLA, Cezar also received some interest from the Bruins.
This summer, Guerrero will be playing with the perennial grassroots powerhouse Belmont Shore. The skilled point guard caught the eye of Belmont coach Dinos Trignois when he played in the Belmont summer league and scored 30 points against Trigonis' team. Guerrero hopes to pair up with Belmont's talented Darius Morris and bring home the GBOA West title as well as earning a trip to the GBOA Challenge of Champions tournament in Chicago this August.

okay im a little late, and i bet no one will read this.... but wow, look at all of you trying to put him down. hes a kid. he wants to play ball with his friends. he's doing enough camps and tournoment during the summer to still get noticed. this kid is easily gonna be the sgvtribune player of the year till he graduates. i saw him play today. he can hit 3 pointers from the nba distance. this kid can also dunk. he has handles and will break your ankles. how about EVERYONE SHUT UP and just come out to the workman gym and watch him do his share of talking. lets watch him prove himself wheather it was a good decision or not.

I bet he left because it was to hard for him school there is not easy.
2nd If it was because his parents couldnt pay Bosco does offer aid but not all that much depending on the family need.
3rd Bosco loses ballers because they dont sell the school like Mater Dei does.
He made a big mistake leaving a school like that but oh well.

As a proud graduate of WHS class of 82, and now a holder of a college degree, making 6 figures, an education
hey dont pull a muscle patting yourself on the back ok??

I guess it is the culture of our country to try and humiliate people when they make decisions. Whatever his situation at SJB was it is his own PRIVATE business. As a proud graduate of WHS class of 82, and now a holder of a college degree, making 6 figures, an education and a school is what the student makes of it.
Last time I checked Covina, Northview and South Hills do not have stadiums on campus, maybe "bad decision" is a little upset Cezar didnt transfer to his alma mater....or did he even graduate?????

M&M,
I've tried to pass on the following creed,
"Go everywhere, know everyone, try to remember as much as you can and do the right thing -because it's the right thing to do. Success will eventually follow."
So now, it's a habit... or a curse, depending on who you listen to.
Martin is a good guy and a fine mentor, especially to the predominantly Hispanic kids in his Wolfpack program. I never said he was a great basketball coach. Those are two different things - and subjective to some. Guerrero is one of those kids that matured early, is a little older than his class, and IMO what you see is what you get, I'm not sure he'll get a ton better. Very good HS player, but probably not as good as one of my favorites, Tiger-Cortez (but handles it WAY better), and where did he end up? Like the title of Charles Barkley 's book, "I could be wrong - but I doubt it."
The boy's doing well and the research is in the publication phase. Trojan boys turn will come soon enough. You'll enjoy it.
I REALLY like Thropay (the soph QB). Lenhart manages the game well, and we've won big in the past with guys like that, but...
Defensively, there's as much quality depth in our LBs and secondary we've had in a while. If we can get any kind of pass rush it should allow us to match up with some of the big-time QBs we'll face. Time will tell.
And...NO... don't...mention....THE LIST!...Not yet... it's too soon!...bloggers will ask... and then...I must...NO...I can't... must... save... for... later... AAAHHHRRRGGGGHHH!!!!

He is a star, i have seen him play at least 10 times this summer, he dominated in vegas 2 weeks ago, handles, passing, dunking and a jumper, very good

come on the kids 5'10. This is way overblown. It's not like he's a 6'6 powerhouse. give it a rest
Posted by: give it a rest | August 7, 2008 11:04 PM
joe amat is typical of the old folks home here on the blog. people who log on to toot their own horn. Quite frankly it gets old

I know a few more details on this kid:
1. He is a 16 yr old freshman
2. He was in danger of flunking out at Bosco.
3. Behind in tuition, big time.
4. He couldn't handle the weekly competition, too many ballers in the trinity league.

Facts are facts, in the SGV there is nobody rated higher than this kid for his age group, and I'll bet he has more upside than anyone else in the Valley. Face it, the best basketball player will be at Workman, not Glendora, next season. Now, I hope the coach gets in some good tournaments. I'd love to see them play Glendora or Nogales in the APU classic. Or get in the Glendora or Arroyo tournaments.

MARBURY OR PARKER ?
That's going to be very interesting.
It'll come down to environment. Hey I lived by WORKMAN when I was first starting out....what do they call that area..."Slaughter Alley"?
Comparing Workman to SJB is like comparing Valinda to Rosmoor.
ICan't wait to see this kid go up against the kid from Chino Hills. THAT IS GOING TO BE A MONSTER MATCH UP...or did they already play against each other...anyone know?
Posted by: Best of luck Kid | August 7, 2008 9:32 AM
How Joe...how in the heck...do you do it!!!????
I mean....seriously Joey...how? World traveler, former coach, former/current Administrator, current "consultant", gatekeeper/Sargeant of Arms to all things AMAT, "local" Historian to the inner wokings of all things "sports" in the SGV and it's breeding ground for scattered coaches acrosss the IE, OC and LA counties, friend and confidant to the great Coach Aguirre, proud father of a scholar and possessor of a lawyeresque recall of the Governing Rules of CIF and "finally" the PROTECTOR of ....dare I say it....."THE LIST".
I sit in awe.
How's the boy's book coming along?
How's Amat defense?
How's Spooner?
How's that Soph. QB looking lately.
Joey...you give new meaning to the overused ..." I KNOW PEOPLE"...
LOL
Posted by: My Pal Joey! | August 7, 2008 8:59 AM
just because you do travel doesnt mean you can coach!
We call this people who can assemble talent! it is usually the assistants running the show. Just look at Gary Mcknight at MD.
Posted by: sgvpride | August 7, 2008 8:57 AM
Joe Amat you are a pretty respectful blogger but i would have to disagree wit you on that one! a good guy? yes as a counsler/mentor of course of the the best around. As a coach mmm we got a problem the guy just cant keep his promises, he trys and recruits these kids they see that it is all lies they stay for a yr and they are out to a better school(Glendora?ck?)
The guy just shouldnt coach high school basketball, he needs to stick to travel ball and being a very good counsler! He will always come off as one of the "nicest guys" beware people! He is a really good counsler and a admistrator over at workman i will give him that
Posted by: a good guy??? | August 7, 2008 8:52 AM
mark..(lower case on purpose) calling out a 15 year old...WHO'S THE PUNK?
Hint: LOOK IN THE MIRROR.
Kid will dominate the SGV and maybe get the scholarship based on his skill but my question is why not Lutheran High School?
They're stepping, the school is close by, coaches have "credentials" and you know the "tuition" is ZERO, and they just came off a championship run?
The points in that TOUGH league, his age, his obvious skill and the fact he "might" grow at least 2/3 inches...well that makes him tough.
Last observation.didn't St/ John Bosco have a FAB 5 freshmen class a couple of years back and they ALL but 1 transferred out after their Freshmen seasons? One was a 7 footer I believe. What's going on at SJB that they are losing another HIGH PROFILE kid?
Best of luck to the Cezar Guerrero but Fred is this more a reflection of the POWER of the TRAVEL coaches or a second coming of TOM LEWIS.....oh what Lewis could have accomplished.
Posted by: OFF THE MARK...mark! | August 7, 2008 8:46 AM
Good for Workman if it works out. CJ will dominate the Montview, but not sure that's enough to put them up there with the big boys. (I wish the Lancers could stille be considered one of the "big boys"...but maybe that's the next reclamation project)
Martin Flores, the Workman coach, is a good guy...but I still question whether this transfer and ultimate eligibility approval will come to fruition. Flores has been CJs travel coach with an organization called the Wolfpack for quite a while (possibly not the last year since Cezar blew up - but definitely within the past 2 years.
The CIF Blue Book clearly states
"A transfer of a student from his or her current school of attendance with or without a corresponding change
of residence to any high school where the student participates or participated, during the previous 24
months, on a non-school athletic team, (i.e. AAU, American Legion, club team, etc.) that is associated with
the new school in the sports previously participated in shall be considered prima facie evidence (“sufficient
evidence”) of undue influence/recruiting by the school to which the student transfers. Such transfer may be
considered prima facie evidence (“sufficient evidence”) that the student enrolled in that school in whole or
in part for athletic reasons. A team associated with the school is one that is organized by and/or coached by
any member of the coaching staff at, or any other person associated** with, that school and/or on which the
majority of the members of the team (Participants in practice and/or competition) are students who attend
that school. When a prima facie case (“sufficient evidence”) of undue influence/recruiting exists, the stu-
dent shall be ineligible to represent the new school in interscholastic athletic competition for a period of one
calendar year from the date of the student’s enrollment in the new school ***unless sufficient proof is pre-
sented to the satisfaction of the Section Commissioner that rebuts or disproves the evidence of undue
influence/recruiting for athletic reasons.***
NOTE: This shall apply to the sport(s) coached by the new coach in the previous 24 months. "
So unless the Gurreros provide ***sufficient proof*** to the Commissioner that disproves the evidence that the transfer was for athletic reasons - they could have a problem.

wow..i wud love to see this lil kid on the court getting all dis hype..tell him to come to open run at citrus so he can play with real ballers and get punkd!

sgvfan....wow such an ignorant comment, maybe he's going to workman because maybe his parents cant afford to pay for the private school(Don Bosco) he goes to...stupid comment
Posted by: chris | August 7, 2008 12:56 AM
No offense, but Glendora is waaaay to "white bread" for Guerrero. I think he will do many things to inspire the other athletes at Workman even if they dont win a game. Thats what will ultimatly make the difference.
Posted by: patrick | August 6, 2008 7:44 PM
honestly this kid and his family is just plain dumb!! why are you going to leave a big tyme school, and go to "workman"..i wish this kid the best lf luck at workman but hes making a bad choice..at least go to the SGV powerhouse glendora..
- this truly reminds of of the guy jerry santos who played for south hills all for year..very good player but needed a big name school to get him out..no offense to sh basketball prgram..but he sure did put them back on the map..-
good luck Cezar Guerrero

The Bill Hankin rule comes to mind here but every school has to start somewhere.
Really who wanted to go to van nuys high school before bill hankins.
But this is great all basketbal powers have to start somewhere and the only power that the sgv has right now is glendora!
Good luck lobos and to cj!

Wow so many HATERS!!! On here finally a small school Workman catches a break and gets a kid with some talent and everyone wants to bash it. The kid chose the school for family and the fact its his travel ball coach. So if the kid wants to play big deal. He will probably average 25 pts a game and make Workman tough to beat. I mean it has to start SOME WERE. Not every school was just great to start. Los Altos and South Hills and Charter Oak. Werent just great over night. They had to get some good coaches that got good talent and made the most of it. And the Brought championships and more good players to that school. If this kid can bring that type of success to the school than good for Workman. Im glad to here it!!

All you young bloggers. Look up the name Vincent Blow. Class of 84
He was a pretty good basketball player at Workman (All CIF etc.) and had a fine college career as well.
Posted by: Vincent Blow | August 6, 2008 5:09 PM
I do not believe Workman will beat Sierra Vista who has improved and changed the last two years or La Puente who has won the league the last two years. He might be kept to 20 points a game and finish third?
fan

He looks pretty good . But who was he playing against ? Looks are deceiving ....
Posted by: Tr | August 6, 2008 4:32 PM
He averaged 17 points a game in a bigtime league, and scored 17 against state champ Mater Dei. I don't care if he's 5-6, those are credentials you can't ignore.
Posted by: FredJ | August 6, 2008 3:54 PM
a 5'10 guy whose a big timer? too funny. he will be a big fish in a small pond but workman will still suck
Posted by: workman still sucks | August 6, 2008 3:49 PM
Finally, something to cheer for at Workman. We're going to have the best player in the valley for three years in a row. get over it everyone, he's all ours.
Posted by: Lobosfan | August 6, 2008 3:48 PM
if hes going to go to a public school around that area, he should probably just transfer to Nogales or West Covina High
Posted by: Chris | August 6, 2008 2:57 PM
everyone should know that, not one guy can make at team. workman had a a pretty good pitcher who set the record for strikeouts and there baseball team did not win. workman is workman. no matter who they get there are going to suck.
Posted by: fan | August 6, 2008 1:45 PM
Lets see a private Education St. John Bosco vs Workman HS? Money has got to be the issue here. St. John Bosco is not cheap and Workman, well it is Workman. This kid is flashy but you put a good defender on him and those behind the back cross over dribbles become turnovers. Most Coaches condone this type of jungle / black top ball. Good luck to the Kid but Workman? What is at Workman? Do they even have a lit stadium on Fridays for thei football team.? Workman is the lowest when it comes to La Puente based High Schools.
Posted by: Bad Decision | August 6, 2008 11:51 AM
This is an April Fools joke, right? Why would he waste his time at Workman.
Posted by: judd | August 6, 2008 11:37 AM
Hey Fred, you guys should bring back the "Murray Meter." This guy should average 35 points a game at Workman.
