Make your case or stop crying

Okay experts, knowitalls, and Bishop Amat fans, how far should Roddy Layton's take-on-all-challengers 1-3 Diamond Ranch team fall in the polls? How far does Charter Oak slip after a tie at Rancho? How far does Northview drop after an offensively-challenged loss to Rowland, and what do we do with Rosemead after rolling over at Harvard-Westlake? What, you thought this was easy. Speaking of Rowland, wouldn't it be nice if they factored into the San Antonio league equation. It would, but it won't happen. That's for South Hills and West Covina, which will be epic when they meet. West Cov's got to move up in the rankings, they're 3-1 and legit. On the flip, how far do we drop 1-2 Glendora and 1-3 Damien? Go ahead, state your case before you come after me on Tuesday when the real rankings come out. And, yes, Bishop Amat is No. 1

Believe it or not, I kind of get the feeling that the folks talking smack at you on this blogg are not the Amat faithfull, but rather, the haters.
You have made it crystal clear that you are not necessarily a “friend of Amat.” On this blogg a number of time, yet they are taking it out on you for the fact that you are being objective in you're assessments, and not just posting "Amat sucks" all the time.
I crush crickets
Who said anything about changing my tune? I still dont care for amat. I was just engaging in some intelligent conversation. I wasn't giving amat some wins but looking at their schedule they should win the next two then come the tough games.
Why does anyone care if I change my tune or not? As much as you people railed me you should be happy I am being more civil.
Rabble, coming from Diamond Ranch I would not be surprised. Coach Layton has lots of troubled little gangsters wannabes playing for him. He benches lots of kids because of attitude. You are right calling out Amat is not a good Idea. The reefer, raider, blackhole bit was amusing tho.
Don't you see that DIAMONDRANCHINDAHOUSE is just smeone trying to get Amat all worked up?
After the game against Chino Hills I'm sure Coach Layton and the Panthers know that staying FOCUSES means letting your PLAY do your TALKING for you.
No one can be that ridiculous!
DIAMOND RANCH IN THE HOUSE
You played two tough teams and got your A-- handed to you.
Amat will destory you..
10 1/2 days til we show the SGV on Fox Sports that we will take out this so called superpower Amat team. They are normal and we are going in there to kick some a-- at that dump called Kiefer, More like reefer stadium with all those Raiders fans running amuck on that grass field, yes we heard about that field, heck rename it the black hole already or Pirates Pavillion. Diamond Ranch 24 Amat 20. We played the tough teams and Amat will be Normal to us. Sermons wants to show Amat what they let get away by not letting him play due to Friends of friends of the coaches who coached there when he made the Mistake of going there.
Look at King Fudge coming in here and calling out Amat schedule and placing Wins in there. What did you go to a Amat game to get Baptised by the Tailgate party goers. Did They pour Beer over your head slap you upside the head with some Carne Asada and stuff some corn tortillas in your crotch area and get you to come to their side? Your changing your tune King Stud.
King Stud mutates again!
King Stud-very true. but that's a lonngggg way fro suckkkksss

I am anything but an amat fan. I was merely looking ahead at amat's schedule. I think the last 3 to 4 games will be the true test if amat is a good team or not.
KING SUDs
Did you not say 0-10 1-9 for amat before the season. or was that donkey boy?...now you are saying a possible first round game at 6-4 7-3..my how you have changed...you are slowly coming out of the closet and coming to our side. I knew this would happen...You are a Lancer at heart admit it.
Amat fans better tread lightly. Yes they are 3-1 and should win the next two but the last few are no gimmies. This team could very easily wind up 6-4 or 7-3 and get a tough first round match up on the road. Should be interesting to see how it all un folds.
In regards to CO and Ranch I also hate ties. The only way I can see it hurting a team is if they lose in overtime and at the end of the season it comes down to record for an at large berth. A 7-2-1 make might look slightly better than 7-3 record The best thing the NHL did was chuck the ties and the CIF should too. Who wants to sit thru 2 to 2 1/2 hrs only to watch no winner? waste of time.
To the Roddy Layton Fan:
Dude you sound like you're all up on his nuts? Give it a rest..yes he's a good coach but like all good coaches people make mistakes! If he's smart he'll start to use all the talent on his team instead of the so called "Big eleven and no more". Listen what frustrates me is if he has all of this experience and is the bomb coach...why is the season going the way it is? That team has the talent to at least be 3-1 at this point. But because of personal reasons he chooses to use a QB that is very close to his family and I think that's selfish...even though this guy continues to make mistakes. Everyone needs to start being more accountable and taking responsibility for there actions...play like a team...a total UNIT and then they'll start to win football games....they'll even have a chance at beating Amat....lets get it together and start pusing that Panther Spirit! We believe in the kids on that field....there the ones bustin there asses out there...with good leadership they can go places...so let push forward and see some W's!
yes, johnson is having a great year. what also impresses me about this young man is what appears to be mental toughness. he was beaten for a touchdown only to come back in that game and not allow herrera to get behind him again and intercept one for a touchdown. one person that i have not mentioned is sheldon price. this young man is quietly having a great year. he has not been thrown at too often and there is a reason why. he has blanketed anyone he's covered. i definitely think the best pair of corners in the sgv play for amat. if bowens plays as good as he looks, that defense will be tough to deal with. seals, prieto, maffie, absolutely awesome. if this team is able to stay healthy, it should win quite a few games.
DR HAS MANY GOOD PLAYERS ON THE FIELD AND ON THE SIDELINES...COACH THERE IS ALOT OF KIDS GIVING THERE BEST IN PRACTICE.SOME EVEN HIT HARDER THAN MOST ON THE FIELD.....WHY ARE THEY NOT PLAYING?
smallciytmc ,
You are right in spades. That's why MSGr had difficulty paying off the gym. It was originally going to be called "Alumni Pavilion" before he removed the name due to lack of donations. The other thing about donations is that he wants donations to be "unrestricted funds" meaning that he can spend it how he wants. This turned a lot of the former football players off. If was up to them - the field would already be redone!
I said back then he was holding out in hopes that it would be named after him. Right again! Many alums will never refer to it using his name. Tear down "Tate Duff Gym" and not rename anything after him -then play games with the names. When he's gone - the checkbooks will reopen.
Bowens back and a bye week, that gives him 2 more weeks for healing. Oh man o man if he comes back and plays like he did last year that defense will really be scary. I want to see what the coaching did to fine tune this monster of a player.
I've been an Amat supporter since the Paredes years. Amat stopped competing after Salter's departure in 1998 (with exception of 2001 during McCleskey years). Ever since then it's been all down hill for Amat. Amat pride has sunk to it's lowest levels.
As we all know too well losing seasons do not bode well in attracting creme de la creme players and will encourage local and outside talent to stay home as well as drive away existing talent away as it was well documented last year during Verti's short tenure.
Well good news is that Hagerty's got this Amat team playing and resembling the Amat of the good old days. I know I'm speaking prematurely in terms of wins, but hey at least at 3-1 we've got momentum, and we've got the fans back and the stadium packed again.
As long as the quality wins come, I'm guessing that top new talent will start flocking and lining up to play for Hagerty as they used to do for Farrar/Bogan/Gano much to the dismay of other SGV teams.
BREAKING NEWS. . . ISAIAH BOWENS FROM AMAT WAS CLEARED BY THE DOCTORS TODAY SO HE'S READY TO GO AGAINST DIAMOND RANCH. I SAW HIM AT PRACTICE RUNNING AROUND BUT COACHES WANTED TO BE SAFE BCUZ ODVIOUSLY THE DIDNT NEED HIM AGAINST DAMIEN. BUT UCLA BOUND LINBACKER/D-END IS BACK. THIS WILL MAKE AMAT'S DEFENCE EVEN BETTER WITH STANDOUTS BRENT SEALS GETTING TACKLES AND DARIAN JOHNSON CONTROLLING THE SECONDARY
Sevendeuce,
Agreed, Johnson is having a great year and has so much going for him, I really like his aggressive style of play and I can see why in these last two games that he and Price have shut down the pass of the opponent they cover. Not completely but allot. Next year I see Anderson as the Premier Back but I do see Johnson getting the ball some as well. Kind of like what they are doing with Seals this year. Lets just hope we continue to Win stay healthy and roll into league fully charged with no major injuries. Note on MClanahan; Yes he is not the fastest but he finds the spot to stop and throw and his vision of the field is getting better, love that 13 yard run for a TD. OLINE DLINE just keep getting better. Yes Amat has talent but that coaching staff assembled by Hagerty is paying off Ten fold. What a differance from the last two years. The only diadvantage that can hurt this years team should they make the playoffs is experience of never being in a playoff game in HS.
Had Hagerty been there the last two years I am sure they would have tasted the playoffs and would be that much more ahead this year. That is my only concern for this team, lack of playoff experience should they get to the Post Season.
no need
it would be really interesting if parents elected to send their kids to amat and i would not doubt that with each win it's at least a thought to some parents. honestly, i would hope that there was more loyalty, but transferring is a reality in high school sports. as for the players you mentioned coming back for amat, i think johnson is an absolutely great player in the making. his technique and physical style of play is excellent. well taught corner. i can't say enough about mcclanahan. i don't know that he would be too many people in a foot race, but he sure seems to navigate the pocket and escape extremely well. his poise and perceived leadership abilities have ultimately translated into success for the offensive unit. i believe the anderson kid will gain close to or more than 1,500 yards next year. he is explosive and strong with good vision. i don't know much about bowens' younger brother, but if genetics play any part in athletic prowess, he will be a good player as well. amat should be fine as the foundation is there for great things.
Don't like to complain, but if you saw the CO / R cuk game , both side had a right to complain, but Co had momentom and refs took it away, How about the stopped clock with no time outs , RC 6 sec on clock and this allowed Rc to score a td when time should have run out. This tied game. Great game in spite of poor field management.
SevenDuece,
Oh the rumblings are already happening with kids wanting to come and play for this coaching staff not to mention playing along side the likes of Darian Johnson, Jerry Mclanahan,Jay Anderson Bowens kids brother and some talented Juniors and Sophmores coming back next year. They know Amat will be loaded again next season. I hear if things dont improve and Wilson and Los Altos not to mention Covina as well we could start seeing a influx of these players coming to Amat to play. It is out there already. It was a mistake for any team in the SGV to play Amat this year. The intrest of parents and players not at Amat grows bigger with every Amat win that this team puts up.
I have alot to cry about nowadays.......!!! My 401K took a major dump, there goes my friggin retirement!
NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Dow industrials plunged on Monday in the blue-chip average's biggest one-day point drop ever after U.S. lawmakers unexpectedly rejected a $700 billion financial bailout, spooking investors who saw it as essential to halting a global market meltdown.
The Dow lost about 778 points and posted its biggest daily percentage decline since the October 1987 stock market crash, while the benchmark S&P 500 also had its worst day in 21 years after the House sent the bailout plan to defeat by a vote of 228 to 205.
I have alot to cry about nowadays.......!!!

Obviuosly, you didn't see my correction on the statement right after.
Why can't Amat,
I've heard from a few people that the monsignor has upset quite a few alum and they won't give big until he retires, which from what I hear, will be soon.
New field for Cathedral.Info from the Times.
Things began to change at Cathedral with a $6.2-million contribution from John and Dorothy Shea of the Shea Foundation that helped with the school's $18.1 million in improvements.
But the turning point for Pearson and the Phantom's football program came when a 1970 alum donated nearly $4 million to assist with the stadium field and scoreboard.
don't be so sure
i too believe the serra league is up for grabs this year. i also believe that the #14 ranking is not a bad thing and somewhat justified. my thinking is amat played inferior teams these past two weeks. however, they dominated them as they should have. great move by amat to schedule those teams and establish dominance in the sgv. i wonder if that will translate into kids in the area wanting to go to amat? only time will tell.
sgvfan
though it would be nice to have more san gabriel valley representation in the pac-5, i wonder if the area schools could handle such competition. amat has a strong tradition of football and even they did not play at that level in recent years. that being said, i don't see any other school in the area that could even be competitive on that level.
stang fan
muir is one of the few schools that has virtually every member of the team residing in the area. muir is truly a community school. because of cif rules, i doubt there are many schools in this situation. great for muir, great community.
Amat dropped from the rankings in the LA Times from 13th to 14th, most likely this was based on playing the cupcakes of the SGV. Damien and West Covina. Whomever said Amat would not win their league or make a playoff or look for a invite at 3rd out of the Serra is foolish. The serra is kind of balanced itself out and Anyone can win this league. Crespi may look the best but they do not have a lock on this Serra Title just yet. It will be a Dog fight and Amat has just as good as chance as the rest. Two Reasons 1.) Talent at numerous positions and 2.) A coaching staff that is bringing out the best of that talent. I could see the Serra shaping up with Loyola #1 Amat #2 and Crespi #3....as far as the L.A. Times goes as of right now It would be Crespi#1 Notre Dame #2 and Amat#3...It will not end up this way Loyola and Amat will be in there somehow someway. As far as playing a #1 seed and losing that is also wrong..I remember a few years back Amat playing a undefeated Lakewood Lancer team at Lakewood. Amat spanked them that nite and made it look easy. Any team can beat any team on any given nite, also Coaches are really turning up their game when it comes to playoffs.. Big Chess Match and sometime that underdog gets overlooked and wins.
SaintsR4real
You are of course kidding right? Or do you think you applied true logic here? Fred clearly stated that a team, as long as it keeps "winning", will hold onto its position. CO did not win. It is true that a tie is not a loss, but neither is it a win.
Congratulations to Amat, CO will likely "clock" us this year, and I respect both programs, but clearly Amat has somewhat righted itself over previous years.
amnot-nothing wrong with being 14th out of over 700 schools in the southern and city sections. Amat will take that-no begging involved.
CORRECTION:
SO THEY DON'T SOLIDIFY THEIR POSITION!!
Comments: It's always been my philosophy in rankings that once a team has solidified a position, it holds on to that rating as long as it keeps winning, so South Hills and Charter Oak remain at Nos. 1 and 2 following victories. Bishop Amat made a statement with big win over Orange Lutheran and is solid at No. 3. Bonita and San Dimas stay at Nos. 4 and 5 after winning. Eight of last week's top 10 won, with only Glendora, which dropped to No. 9, and South El Monte, which dropped out of the top 10, being the only losers. Rosemead showed it belonged with a big win over Covina and takes over No. 10.

As for my take, Charter Oak has not yet lost, so according to Steve’s rational, they must still be number one because they have not played themselves out of the top spot with a loss. Remember, a tie is not a loss, so don’t take it away from them Steve !!

Steve states "as long as it keeps on WINNING"
Fact: Charter Oak didn't win last Friday, so they solidify their position.
NEXT!
Rosemead did lose badly but they did play without three of their top seniors. The back ups could not keep up and did only show up with 25 players.
amat still begging for #1 in the sgv tribune, according to the times whom they favor and think the tribune should emulate, they are now ranked #14 dropping down in the rankings...so whinealots what's up with that?
I love all the smoke that gets blown up everyone's axx when Monday rolls around and "who is no. 1" becomes so important. Just like the BCS it is and should always be "wins" not ties, "losses" not "almost wins" or "should've been" wins and STRENGTH of schedule. If DR was winning then yes they should be ranked higher but they are not winnin! CO could be #1, but they did not "WIN", PERIOD!!! A "TIE" is not a loss but it is not a "WIN" either. Go kiss your sister and see if that reminds you of your girlfriend, NOT!! BA will roll DR like no one has seen around here in a while. I was at the DR v CH game and I was not impressed with either team to be honest, but DRs lack of discipline, the inability to sustain a drive, the lack of experience and exposure for the QB will all be brought out big time against BA. And for those of you who think that Roddy was responsible in some way for FSN covering the BA game, get a clue!! Start with JJ, BA alumni, not to mention the best coaching staff in the Southland. I wonder how many of the former BA alumni will be there to claim there allegiances now that the program is back on a roll? Enjoy this week off everyone while BA prepares for DR, if you are a DR fan, cuz the butt whoopin' will commence on Friday Oct. 10, 2008!!!!
I agree with jcaz!! How can you take the number one spot away from a team that has NOT lost a game??!! Seems unfair to me....Yes Bishop Amat has had a great start as well, but they HAVE lost a game. They should be number 2!! Come on Fred....you know we are right....do the RIGHT thing and KEEP Charter Oak #1 where they belong.
Whenever I read these comments from all of these bloggers, I am amazed at how much time, effort and research goes into their bodies of work.
Bloggers like "THE STANG FAN" and "DON" really do put allot of time and energy into what they post.
As for my take, Charter Oak has not yet lost, so according to Steve’s rational, they must still be number one because they have not played themselves out of the top spot with a loss. Remember, a tie is not a loss, so don’t take it away from them Steve !!
Just the facts!
Damien #3 will probably finish 3-7.
The only team they beat was Claremont # 562. You must win to get ranked. They don't even belong in the top ten.
There pre-season may not even get them to the playoffs.
Ridiculous.
whats up,
You guys are lucky to have Roddy Layton as your coach. Be honest how many players are being scouted or recruited and what has Roddy's role been in that recent development. How many times will ypu be on TV this year? Who orchestrated that? DR playing Chino Hills, Oaks Christian and Bishop Amat? Who else has the nads to schedule the best competition?
I was at the game and can tell you DR gave the Chino Hilss team fits. Were there breakdowns in coverage, yes? Missed blocks yes. But what I saw up close and personal is a coach who called the right play at half with 4 seconds to go and score a crucial TD from 50 yards out.. What I saw was a coach busting his butt to deal with refs that were calling tough calls, players that had over 5 personal fouls all at crucial times...especially the 3 in the final game winning drive, players that were gassed and running on fumes and still competing to the best of their ability. That's a credit to the Head Coach. Look at some of the staff. They're young. Roddy has outsatnding credentials from his playing days thru his coaching career. I'll tell you this IF you don't want him I've got a group together that will amke him an offer he can't refuse. So count your blessings. It's a remarkable development that Roddy has hanged the cultire there so quickl that the fans and players actually believ they should always win. For sure you always compete! So instead of giving Roddy the business thaink about the quality of opponent you almost beat.
The fact of the matter is Roddy needs nothing but your support and so do the players.. It's a credit to him that to a player...every single player was FUMING....KNOWING they should have won that game. Imagine that little old Diamond Ranch is having that perception of itself...YES THEY ARE WINNERS!
And Roddy made them that way. Someday Diamond Ranch will understand that winning comes with mental toughness. That means holding your blocks, controlling your emotions on the field and having discipline amoungst coaches on the sidelines. BUT IT WILL COME,
One last thing. The running back Spirlin is a flat out stud.# 12 and # 55 need to show leadership by showing composure when things don't go your way. Semons IS for REAL and that QB is going to be a keeper.
Diamond Ranch is STILL UNDEFEATED IN LEAGUE....the wheels haven't fallen off and the sky isn't falling. Show everyone how much better you are for your schedule instead of bringing yourselves down from within.
Best of luck DR.
Hey Amat Fans!
I know that you are pleased with your team's improvement this season. I also know that the most reasonable among you realize that the season is young and there is still much to prove. However, I thought that I would point out to you that the talk on this blog has shifted from "Amat sucksssssssssss" to "Amat recruits". Since you don't suck anymore, people have to find something to criticize. I hope you take this development as a true compliment from all the wannabes in the SGV.
Good luck on your continued improvement. I hope that you rise to the top is complete sooner than later.

Saints 4 wins no losses, averaging over 47 points per game.
The only Team in the top 3 that can talk smack about strength of schedule is Amat. Yes, Amat is #1 !
12 more days to "SMUDGEPOT"
GO SAINTS!!
what?!?! CO last years team was way better then any team especially this years team or amat. just to let u know that they beat west co twice 55-28 & in the playoffs 40-21
Just the facts,
West Covina still plays the Miramonte cross over game but this year its vs Los Altos, as for the WC vs CO games last year the second game was close till well into the 4th qtr. the score was 27 to 21, until
Muema & Snowden each broke long TD runs late in the game to turn a close game into what looked like a blowout on the scoreboard.
If Amat this year & CO last year stepped on the field against each other Amat wins, unless CO is a much better team this year compared to last year, I think Amat would beat this years CO team fairly easily.
Go.
I can name 5 recruited by AMAT.
What happen on Saturday night at the DR game? Is it poor coaching calls or not enough skill on the part of the players? What I don't understand is why you would call a run play with a 1:30 left in the game? Why wouldn't you throw sideline passes and get the ball down the field, get out of bounds to stop the clock? Is it that they have no confidence in the QB? If so, then why is he in there? Well they better get it together or there liable not to win another game this whole season! It's a shame when the coach is playing the good ol' "favorites game" and not utilizling many other players that kick **** through out the week at practice. Better change your philosphy in order to salvage this season.
Joe Amat,
EVERY SINGLE starter at Muir lives in the school's boundaries. EVERY ONE.
The reality is there aren't any families flocking to NW Pasadena to send their children to Muir due to its bad rap over the last few years. As a matter of fact our kids, more than other areas, have been helping other schools throughout the SGV for awhile now. I have usually been pretty bitter about it but I do realize that Muir has to change for families to come back. It appears as though that has actually happened now that the school has undergone a MAJOR internal reconstruction. I'm hearing REALLY good things!
Btw, good luck to all the kids this year who came up through the ranks in Pasadena and are helping their respective teams in the ESGV:
Geoff Vaughns (SH)
Miles Bevel (SH)
Adam Muema (CO)
Dennis Rufus (CO)
AJ Powell (CO)
Dewayne Gatti (BoHi)
It should make for great fun in the playoffs.
Joe is right. I have yet to see any Amat players recruited. I would think that any "recruiting" would be a result of kids wanting to go there because of the top notch coaching staff Amat has assembled.
Nearly 50 of Amat's 75 players were also private/charter school kids in junior high. Those kids naturally feed into the private high school system - regardless of where they reside their families have committed to private education.
Look at the Amat roster. Not quite as far reaching as you might suspect. At least... not yet.
1.Bishop Amat
2.Charter Oak
3.South Hills
4.West Covina
5.Glendora
6.San Dimas
7.Bonita
8.Damian
9.Rowland
10.Northview
SGVFan,
Do you really believe that public school, lets say South Hills for example, gets all its kids from within Covina/West Covina.
I bet if you created an artificial district around Amat (3 miles) and looked at the football team it would not be that far out of whack from some of the other creative programs (SHHS, COHS). I am not saying anything illegal, but probably 50% of the Amat players fall in that ring and SHHS probably has 75% so it is not too far off.
As for tuition, 5K a year is not that much with what I see these days parents shell out for travel ball, toys (the expensive ones) trips etc. My parents worked hard and it was rough, but many parents not only can afford it they spend more on other important things for their kids.
Now Oaks Christian at 20K a year is a lot of cash!
-J
I am not convinced that Amat is an upper-echelon team in the Pac 5. However, all you prognosticators who have them finishing last in their league are sadly mistaken.
Amat will beat ND and can certainly beat Loyola. Not quite sure about Crespi but when Bowens comes back they'll have a great shot. It's not that I think Amat is some supreme team now, but they are VERY good and I think those other teams aren't as good as some people seem to suggest.
ND is YOUNG!! Who have they played? I am guaranteeing an Amat victory in that one. I know Loyola should've beaten De la Salle but the Spartans aren't there normal dominant selves and St. John B's put it on the Cubs last Friday. Finally, Crespi is probably the favorite to win league, but they too showed they are quite beatable by losing to St. Bonnie's.
Of course Amat lost to LO to open the season and their victory over OLu has lost some of its luster but they can compete in their league and will probably finish 2nd.
Lets face it. It is true that Amat gets to have kids from all over the area come play football. While public schools can only select kids from within their boundaries. But it is also true that tuition at Amat is as much as sending your kid to college. Just with that alone not everyone can afford to send their kids to Amat. Maybe only 10 -15% of the population can afford the tuition and live comfortably. There is balance within the system. Can you imagine a sgv without Bishop Amat. Who would represent the sgv in CIF's highest division? Its like the OC without Mater Dei. It just wouldn't seem right.
Charter Oak, Cal Preps # 113 best team in the state, has victories over #364 Diamond Bar (thanks to DB moving up after their big win over #541 Walnut), #483 and bottom of the barrell Pac5 powerhouse Aliso Viejo , and one of the better teams from Whittier - #600 Pioneer. All that to go along "kissing their sister" in Rancho Cucamonga during their explosive offenses 14 pt eruption.
So clearly, they've earned that top spot.
And Joe... show me a public school with 22 starters from "within its area" and I'll show you... well, I'd venture to bet there aren't any. Open enrollment changed that. Ask around and join this millenium. This isn't your dad's CIF anymore.
Nobody fields a team with all players coming from their school boundaries.
Brandon Sermons should have never left Amat. If he's getting pac 10 schools looking at him now, if he had stayed he would have schools nationally looking at him. But I don't blame him for leaving also, the coaching staff was not very good while he was at Amat. I'm glad his brother, Rodney is coaching at Amat. He has done a fine job developing Gaise and their jr. running back in less than a year. The SGV needs some power teams to move up in the divisions. It would be great to have Amat, Charter Oak and South Hills all playing Pac 5 football representing the sgv like all those Corona teams in the Inland Empire. But I know that's wishful thinking also.
I will admit, Bishop Amat has for years, has had a great football program. But lets face the facts. The public schools in the SGV pick from within its areas. Bishop Amat is private and has the opportunity to get its talent from outside the boundries. If you truly think that Amat should be ranked as the #1 team within the SGV and want to hold that status, pick from it's boundries like everyone else and see how the program stands. That's no disrespect to schools like La Puente and Bassett, but it is what it is.
1.charter oak
2.bishop amat
3.south hills
4.san dimas
5.west covina
6.bonita
7.rowland
8.damiem
9.northview

charter oak they have an explosive offense and a sold deffense with qb allen in control.
bishop is starting to resemble the chapionship quallity teams of the past.
south hills will make this the dyanasty team of the decade for south hills.
san dimas looks unstopable right now but i want to see them against quality oppenents.
west covins they shocked me with there big win over glendora
bonita has a soild spread offense wit qb peredez
rowland won but looked like they strugled against northviews deffense but came out with the upset victory
damiem is a good team i compare them to bonita but needs to win big games
northview has one of the best deffense's ive seen in a while but needs to get there highly capable offense together. they will be looking for a big win over #3 south hills team but there odds are aginst them
rosmead is a very good team with sumler on the field
Bishop Amat – loss to Los Osos, victories over Orange Lutheran, West Covina and Bishop Amat. Preseason game left versus Diamond Ranch
Charter Oak – victories over Aliso Niguel, Pioneer, Diamond Bar, tie versus Rancho Cucamonga. Preseason games left versus Damien and Etwanda (Can someone verify for me I heard West Covina chose not to play the Miramonte / San Antonio League crossover game that’s how the Chargers play six preseason games and have a bye week 8)
Charter Oak beat West Covina twice last year both games high scoring large margin of victories the second game won in the Quarterfinals of the playoffs.
Charter Oak also beat Diamond Ranch last year despite the Panthers having to forfeit their prior games because of an ineligible player. In that game against Diamond Ranch last year, the Panthers were technically 7-2 undefeated in league and playing for the league championship and a playoff position.
Bishop Amat loss to Los Osos from the Baseline league and Charter Oak tied Rancho Cucamonga from the same league.
Los Osos plays Rancho Cucamonga on Halloween Night potentially for the league championship but Upland and Etiwanda both loom as dangerous opponents considering everyone beat everyone in that league last year.
Bishop Amat defeats Damien easily and Charter Oak plays Damien this week.
Bishop Amat did beat Orange Lutheran traditionally a top tier state championship contender but obviously having a down year and rebuilding season.
Bishop Amat plays in a more challenging league competing with teams like Crespi, Norte Dame, Loyola and St. Francis compared to Charter Oak’s will compete with Bonita and Diamond Ranch this year for the league championship.
Sadly the reality is Charter Oak probably will win or at least tie for their league championship and Bishop Amat’s goal realistically is to hopefully get a playoff bid as a third place team.
Charter Oak will be in the Semifinals for the third year in a row and Bishop Amat if they make the playoffs will be beat in the first round by someone like Long Beach Poly or Mater Dei.
Bottom line: Bishop Amat should be and has to be the #1 team in our Valley representing every one of us but how far have the Lancers fallen and how high have teams like the Chargers risen that this would even be an argument or debate by anyone shocks me. Pathetic and Ridiculous!
Now when these teams last played each other neither team was fielding their best team from when I consider was the peak of their football programs but I truly believe both teams could beat each other on any given night this year. I’ve seen Los Osos and Rancho Cucamonga play each of them this year and yes the I.E. has more athleticism than the S.G.V. We were the focus of high school football players but where we may have one or two top tier players in our entire Valley those schools like the Grizzles and Cougars have near double digits players like that on their one team.
Unfortunately, were not fortunate enough to witness the best of high school football anymore on Friday nights because you would have to drive further east to observe the best athletes and teams but regardless we should embrace our Valley’s best like Bishop Amat the parochial school and Charter Oak public school representing us willing to play some of the best teams from the I.E. and O.C.
The alternative is San Dimas just beat Montclair and Ontario and has a bye before competing with Bonita for the smudge pot that will be their toughest opponent this year. In their league, they have teams like Covina and Baldwin Park that Bonita already defeated convincingly so a team that finishes with Ganesha in their final league game of the season has no place in this conversation.
South Hills yes beat Ayala and loss to La Habra who is still a step below Orange Lutheran, Los Osos, and Rancho Cucamonga but just beat Montview league power Duarte badly and has preseason games left against Northview and Rosemead and their crossover game is versus Los Altos who is obviously not the same team they’ve been in years past.
Regrettably, South Hills cannot be considered in the same conversation either as Bishop Amat and Charter Oak because their toughest opponent left on their schedule is West Covina who did beat Glendora last week but loss harshly versus Bishop Amat and was beat twice by Charter Oak last year. Every team in the Valley better learn a lesson and schedule tougher opponents or accept public scrutiny like South Hills, San Dimas and others because at least Bishop Amat, Charter Oak, West Covina, Damien, and Glendora either play each other or player bigger programs from other areas. La Habra is just one game and isn’t enough considering they probably would get beat by at least a few of the teams I mentioned above.
My Top Ten:
1a. Bishop Amat
1b. Charter Oak
3. Damien
4. West Covina
5. South Hills
6. Glendora
7. Bonita
8. San Dimas
9. Northview
10. Rosemead
Sgv football fans
Yes I do think Roddy Layton and the Diamond Ranch football team has taken on to much this year.First of all DR does have a very well balanced team. They have a very good OL, Brian Spirlin ran for 163 yards Saturday night and they have a strong defence as well. They have three or four good receivers but the real problem for DR is their QB. He has not done well when put under pressure. This QB on a scale from 1-10 is a 3 at best. DR needs to make a change at QB right now and it might turn their season around before its to late. Also all the penalties are killing this team.Layton needs to make sure these kids are disciplined on the field at all times to give this team a chance at winning .With all this said I really believe DR could have been 3-1 and not 1-3 with a different QB and some discipline. Good Luck Panthers .
Thanks for the props Stang Fan. You make a great point about speed and team speed. If that WAS everything I would be in Pasadena tomorrow sizing kids for rings. To your point, all but the top three or four ESGV teams are highly susceptible to fast teams. I think this will be borne out when we get into the SE D playoffs.
BTW, I didn't forget Marshall, at 0-3 they are just too far down on my list for me to list; somewhere between La Puente and Sierra Vista.
Dear Mr. Checkingin,
While I can't speak personally for all those '"leeway" posters' you referred to I can tell you that I have given the Damien crew some respect this year because of the 12-3-1 record of the teams that beat them.
The W-L is important but WHO you beat, (or who beat you), is also important when evaluating a team's efficacy. We have so many also ran teams and middlin leagues around that we often fail to recognize the difference between success and excellence.
Don't count out the mead just yet. They weren't just without sumler, but they were missing two other starters and another half of the team weren't allow to play. They only had like 25 guys overall playing against harvard-westlake
Diamond Ranch Corner Back Brandon Sermons is the most talented skilled player in the SGV. You cant argue that. 12 division 1 offers and thats including all the Pac 10 schools. Amazing
Don,
If nothing else, you should be commmended for knowing so much about ALL of the local schools. You did forget Marshall however, but that's okay so does everyone else.
Again, I disagree with your placement of Muir at #7...but hey it is YOUR poll and teams will rise and drop as the season continues. In terms of Muir, CO, SH, DR, WC, and Bonita, at least will find out in the playoffs.
Quick sidenote...I hear a lot of people saying Rancho Cucamonga is very fast. Now, while they have probably the second fastest kid in the state their overall team speed isn't on par with Muir's. Passing league doesn't measure a team's true overall worth at all, however speed is something that can certainly be determined. This past summer Muir's overall team speed KILLED Rancho as Muir ran circles around them. Obviously, there is MUCH more to football than just speed but it is encouraging to know that some of these teams in the ESGV are susceptible to overall team speed.
i agree that diamond ranch has a tough schedule. but saturday they lost to chino hills. c.oak and amat will eat them for dinner. and i disagree thAt they have the best skill athletes in the valley. amat definitely has the best athletes in sgv
May I please inquire as to ALL the "leeway" posters have opted to impose on Damien during the course of this short season thus far?
They are 1-3, each loss was a solid BLOW-OUT, yet still some consider them worthy of a top ten in the SGV--what's up with this?
Their win vs. Claremont, while convincing, was still against Claremont, a doormat of the recent past.
I'd love to see Damien do well, but when they don't deserve it, why does the posting population still offer such promise, when a "turn-a-round" is no where in sight?
I've seen them three times this year. I pin their final record to come in around 3-7---at best.
Diamond Ranch has the hardest schedule in SGV. Give them some slack. They have the best skilled players in SGV. CO and BA are also great teams. WC is overrated
Fact, Amat coaches invited the CO JAA kids to be on the sidelines during the BA, WC game. I wish we had that much pull. Kudos BA.
how do u drop bonita after they just blew out baldwin parkand the fact that there 3-1
I guess we all expect CO or Amat to be number 1 in the SGV. No suprise there! However, ranking San Dimas High School in the top three teams is indeed extraordinary! The idea that San Dimas can be ranked by anyone, let alone members of the press, ahead of teams like South Hills, Damien, Los Altos, Bonita, etal... is really a testiment to the great job Bill Zernikow and the other coaches at SD have done with their kids. Granted, this current senior class at SD is really stacked with talent, but everyone at SDHS should be very proud of their hard work over the past several years. We will never know how SD would have matched up against the likes of Amat, Charter Oak, South Hills, etc., but I think it's safe to say that win, loose, or draw, the Saints can play on the same field with anyone - at least this year they can. As for my thoughts on rankings...
1.) Amat
2.) Charter Oak
3.) San Dimas
4.) South Hills
5.) West Covina
6.) Glendora
7.) Damian
8.) Rosemead
9.) Rowland
10.) Bonita
I don't think the Saints' shedule will ever allow them to move ahead of Amat or Charter Oak... just like Amat and Charter Oak will never move up on a statewide scale. Even though Amat has a tuff enough schedule, the will get clocked in league. And Charter Oak doesn't have a tuff enough league... somewhat like San Dimas.
Good for all these teams. Amat, CO, SH, SD, Glen, and the rest should all be happy with their progress this year.
Walnut????...You guys are kidding right...Top 10 in SGV?? Not sure who said they shouldve beaten Diamond bar , but that certainly is and wasnt the case...Walnut has not even played anybody other than Diamond bar, HELL atleast DB manned up and played Charter Oak, and some people are rewarding Walnut for playing Covina???
Why dont you switch it up a little bit and list the top 5 or 10 players per position. That should open up a pretty good topic of discussion.
OK Freddie, pretty much everything you asked for.
My rationale? Always the same; who would beat whom today.
Bishop Amat – So far, it's a Hags to riches story; the Serra awaits
South Hills – Yeah I know it was Duarte
Charter Oak – Solid team uncovers some of those Charger soft-spots
San Dimas – A whole week off before the spongebob game
West Covina – Will still finish second in the SAL
St Francis – Will go 5-0 and not win another game all year
Muir – Pacific League looking tougher these days and Stangs toughest of all
Glendora – Tarts take planned preseason pounding, plan for pundits to punish Pasquy
Bonita – Some slight shifts in the O helped, still too many penalties
Damien – Classy program this, hope they are up to the next 7 weeks
Diamond Ranch – I kind of expected more here
South El Monte – Pummeling Puente postpones position progress
Maranatha – Best team you never heard of
Diamond Bar – Enjoying tour of the OC's lesser lights
Rowland – Looks kinda weird up here, huh?
San Gabriel – Still a bit achy after Del Rey run in
Rosemead – Had a little trouble hanging with the rich white kids
Arcadia – Playing through pain here
Walnut – And you thought that Rowland looked funny up T H E R E
Northview – Lidle Tournament starts in less than eight weeks
Rio Hondo Prep – Inexorable rise of the itty bitty schools
Pasadena – Bumped up for having the stones to tak on a Moore League team
San Marino – Hope you enjoyed Hoover guys; next week, Cantwell
Alhambra – You guys should be better than this
Los Altos – Transition over, HH fallsport fans angling for Aguilar
Azusa – Up next? Four straight games with 0-4 teams from the Montview
Claremont – Sorry Pack, it's all downhill from here
Poly – Unnamed Montview, RHL or MVL teams should be embarrassed right here
Monrovia – Beckman might start a roll; Rio Hondo is pretty soft
Temple City – May be hoping for Friday night Sigalert on Route 19
Baldwin Park – I suggest some work this week on Special Teams
Western Christian – To be someone, ya still gots to play someone
Wilson – OK, get the corn dog lady a coaches shirt
El Monte – Lost to Covina ... they coulda been lions
Pomona – These guys need a pass into the Mt Baldy League; fast.
Blair – Good thing for Blair the region has so many rotten teams.
Covina – Bring on the McDonough clone experiments. Hurry!
1. Bishop Amat - Without a doubt they are the number 1 team in the Valley. Shoot need I say more. They have fifteen million former head Coaches that know how to Coach the game. Coach Rogers is proud.
2. Charter Oak - Has so much talent, they should of beat Rancho Cucamonga which got whipped by Amat the last two years. Loaded, loaded, loaded Farrar and co should be in the ship and should challenge for the CIF ship
3. South Hills - They are interchangeable with C-Oak. Both teams have talent but they just aren't on Amat's level at all. Same as above Bogan and Company
4. San Dimas - Plays a weak schedule, but hasn't come up with a loss. They can score, but not play defense. Will drop down later in the year.
5.Damien - West Covina, Glendora these three spots are up for grabs. Damien is still physically a better team. Morrison, has some dudes, lets see what he can do in league.
6. West Covina got a nice message sent to them when they played Amat. But beat a good glendora team. Maggiore, one of the better Coaches in the Valley.
7. Glendora - What the hell happen to them they lost West Covina without their Full back. Pasqueralla wins wherever he goes. Sound defense and a strong o-line equals win.
8. Walnut - A new thriving offense, O'shields got them scoring finally with a new physical defense led by former Amat Coach - equals winner. From what I heart they should of beat D-Bar.
9. Rowland - Young and loaded, the future seems bright for the Raiders. They seem to have answers on both side of the game.
Snyder got boys, that play like men. Played Northview Physically and won
10. Bonita - They can score except against Canyon, but their defense remains suspect. But a dam well coached team. Podley just knows how to Coach the spread.
You know ...let's clear up the SCRUBS comment about Bishop Amat.
Those so called scrubs are the Priets, Prices, Mc Brides, Wells, and others from yesteryear.
Those so called SCRUBS are coaced by former head coaches, former CIF and Players of teh Year, former DIV1 players and former NFL players.
They coach SCRUBS?
Please.
Amat won big. They wre suppose to do that. Damein played all night and score 24 points...were they suppose to do that?
1. Bishop Amat: Should have been here two weeks ago after the O-luth win but they but they had to prove it with wins vs WC and Damien.
2. San Dimas: Should be No.1 based on Tribunes rankings formula.. no losses but they are playing cupcakes.
3. Charter Oak: Another one that should be No.1 based on Tribune rankings formula..They technically have not lost.
4. Damien: put up 24 on Amat with scrubs in but nonetheless they put up more then WC did.
5. West Covina: Put up 6 on Amat but beat Glendora without Illi ..
6. So Hills: beating Duarte is like playing a Jr. Midget JAA team. not impressed besides La Habra they are playing cupcakes again.
7. Rowland: would not suprise me if they finish ahead of WC or SH in league, second place finish in San Antonio possible
8. Rosemead: Way out of their league with Harvard Westlake but can handle the SGV teams they play, also without Tra S. but it would not have mattered in last game.
9. Bonita: Does just enough to get ranked here.
10.Walnut: Very impressive in their win vs Covina. This team may be coming around. Look Out.
Yeah Joey...NO TO HAWAIIAN SHIRTS. Or so I'm told. Last time I bought one my daughter's look on her face caused me nightmares for weeks! lol
No to a comb over. Baseball cap yes! Shaved head NO! Especially with the Goatee...might as well get a Tattoo on my neck !
Same goes for speedos unless you're in Europe. Why do men wear them? There ghas to be a law that no manufacturer can make a speedo in any size that fits a man over 150 lbs! Last Olympics in LA I saw a German fellow, 6'4" 290 plus pounds in a red speedo at Huntigton Beach in 84! Talk about German Engineering....may God!
And PINK button down shirts. Absolutely not! Okay so you're secure in your masculinity....NOT!
Oh and a personal favorite....IF you're going to wear those Addida embroderied shoes...don't wear them with NIKE shoes....or the NIKE t-Shirt with the Reebok shorts...BUT THAT'S JUST ME!
LOL
I coached the second girl from the left in basketball with her dad. Outstanding young lady. Superior family. Amat lucked out when they got that girl. Thought she would go to St. Lucy's with 99% of her class but Amat won out. Mom and Dad are high school sweethearts from Amat....legacy!
One thing to remember is the physical beat downs Charter Oak has suffered at the hands of Morrison's Spartans.
Last eyar was a tie I believe after a dominating second defensive second half by Damien.
But you're right Damien and Charter Oak have a lot to prove to themselves. May the best team and everyone stay healthy.
good point, Magic!
Wife's a big "What not to Wear" fan.
She can have her TLC as long as I get my ESPN!
The *UNIFORMS*, son... the UNIFORMS!
Joey....come on now has it been that long? BLACK slims you down! You're married right?
lol
Besides everyone looks better in black! Whether you're wearing it or driving it....BLACK LOOKS GOOD!
Trust me on this one...as I've been told many times.
This is a more appropriate place for this post.
Because of Fred's and Steve's thorough and complete defense of their choice in ranking CHARTER OAK ahead of AMAT on their last poll,I think that the game to attend this Friday has got to be DAMIEN VS. CHARTER OAK.
At last we will have some sort of "measuring tool" to use when comparing the Chargers with the Lancers. Of course, anything less that a dominating performance by Charter Oak would be a disappointing ordeal given the hype surrounding this team. I truly believe that what happens during this game will help determine whether or not CO will schedule AMAT in the near future.
The Amat vs. Damien game was over by halftime. The Amat first string players left that game with a 40-10 victory. We'll see how the Chargers fare.
I don't know Joe they look OK to me!
Aram that was clutch wouldn't argue with that list at all. Congrats on the National gig. Nothing like putting your nose to the grind stone and coming out on top. FOX...exteremely nice!
GOAT...nicer.
You always were the wordsmith Aram.
Who you dating thes days. That was always a point of interest with me. First kiss Vince Scully daughter as I remember right? And then there was the fabulous Elizabeth. Latinas...I'm telling you. lol
I hear rumblings that KIm Kardashian might be available. Any news?
Anyone NOT on that Top Ten list that surprises you?
Once again Aram...congrats!
diamond ranch-
most over-rated team last 3 years, all we here about is there tuff schedule,to many people buy into roddys hype, in last 3 years have won only one game that there were underdog, all they do is get beat up then they and everyone else says yeah , but they have a hard schedule, it has done nothing for them.
1- bishop - barely
2- co - could beat them
3- sh - will get better
4- wc - top 3 just better
5- sd - all 3 teams- good
6- glen - cant beat top 4
7- damien-best of the rest
8- rm - 3 way coin toss
9- dr- 3 way coin toss
10- bonita- lost coin toss
los altos - hang in there !!!
San Dimas Saints are the best football team in school history and also the most underrated in the SGV. Although I am writing on the National level, I am still aware of who's who among the landscape of the San Gabriel Valley High School Football scene. This is the truest most correct Top 10 rankings below.

SH - Sorry but rules are rules.
Bonita – Nice blowout
Glen- If you go up fast, you drop fast because of loss.
DR- Moves up because Rosemead and NV get hammered
Rowland- Beat a top ten team.
LA – Best 0-3 team and predict a surge soon!
Do we lose points for the dancers *black* uniforms with *old gold* trim in the picture?
School colors are ROYAL BLUE and ATHLETIC GOLD... and proud of it!
Sorry, DR 7, bump off the mead.
Hi Fred:
I'll take a stab at this, and put in my two cents.
Have a chart running for two weeks. Some what interesting.
Last week's tribune top ten:
CO 27.8 now 29.8 Appears tie helped them.
BA 42.9 now 43.9 Appears winning helps them.
SH 30.2 now 29.8 Appears very little change in loss
Glendora: 37.2 now 28.7 One of biggest movemnets since upset. Rightfully so since they lost to DV school.
SD 28.1 now 27 Little movement so I guess last game opponents hurt them.
NV 12.4 now 6.6
Another big movement change like Glendora
Rosemead 16.5 now 14.1
Not much change but finally played a good team and got crushed
WC 20.7 now 25.9
Nice jump beating Glendora and well deserved.
Bonita 15.3 now 16.6
Beat a good defensive team with ease.
DR 24.9 now 20.6
Strength of scedule doesn't seems to be working in there favor.
Good Luck with your choices...
1. Amat
2. CO
3. SH
4. WC
5. Glen
6. Damien
7. SD
8. Bonita
9. Rowland
10. Rosemead
SGV FAN, yesterday you said RC was better than Los Osos after watching both of them play. Have you already thrown a few back today or what?
SGV Fan, maybe you believe that San Dimas wouldnt beat any of those teams but neither would Bonita. What puts Bonita above San Dimas in your rankings? Don't forget they didn't even show up against Canyon.
1.Bishop Amat
2.South Hills
3.Charter Oak
4.West Covina
5.Glendora
6.Bonita
7.San Dimas
8.Damian
9.Rowland
10.Northview
Bishop Amat has proven that they are the best team in the SGV.
Charter Oak was exspected to win Rancho, but ended up with a tie. Mabe there not as good as they are thought of. Well just have to see how they play against other power house SGV teams.
South Hills is doing well. But have a crappy schedual. They should go undefeated until they play West Covina.
West Covina is also doing very well. Beating one of the SGV's top ranked team Glendora. They too should go undefeated until the South Hills game.
San Dimas is doing good only beacuase they have have a crappy schedual and a crappy league. They are way over rated but people still seem to favor them.
I guarantee if they played Bishop, Charter Oak, South Hills, West Covina,or Glendora they would loose no doubt.
TOP 5:
AMAT
S. HILLS
SAN DIMAS
W. COVINA
C. OAK
ANY QUESTIONS??
DR should be in the top 3
