Azusa wins 40-13, Ganesha loses 50 straight

Back by popular demand, the Tribune's prep scoreboard. You can also access it on our prep webpage

For quarter-by-quarter update click thread

Above: Azusa QB Adrian Gaeta passed for 178 yards and rushed for 87 while accounting for four touchdowns in the Aztecs' come-from=behind 40-13 victory.

Azusa High School kicks off the football season tonight at, yes, Ganesha. You know the story. Ganesha hasn't won a football game since beating Sierra Vista, 27-14, to open the 2003 season. The Giants' 49-game on-the-field losing streak is the longest in the history of California prep football, breaking the previous record of 46 set by Moorpark from 1977-82. The Giants were shutout in seven of their 10 losses last year, and have been shut out 27 times during a losing streak in which they've been outscored 2,090-290.
On paper, Scherf couldn't ask for a better opponent to start his tenure. The longtime Aztecs assistant was promoted following the resignation of Craig Schuster, who is now an assistant at San Dimas. But Scherf's somewhat leery, because the Giants have a new coach, too. After Jim Sturgeon resigned, the Giants hired David Fleming.
"They're going to have to win a game someday, I just hope it's not against us," Scherf said. "But it's not going to be a case where we're overlooking anyone.

whitey, hows that Muir Mustang tatoo looking on your forehead? DRANCH gets spanked again after running their bunk mouths! Super suck it baby!

Good Job Scherf! You stuck to your game planned and won the game!

I like how you mixed up your offensive plays! You ran and threw the ball when necessary!

Have a great season! And best of luck to you, and your coaching staff!

AZTEC PRIDE!

I want to send my kid to play for Azusa after they proudly beat a lousy 0-50 Ganesha team. Azusa is da real deal. LMAO

you feel good about the game and you lost 33-12? not smart

it was not bad as the score i promise you. we moved the ball i feel good about the game. and stoped them too! im ok with that loses i feel good going against monrovia.

Hey Duarte,

Maybe it's time to schedule Ganesha again...you know, so your coach can feel better?

Note: SOUTH HILLS is waaaaaay better than Ayala.

You may need to turn the lights off...in the 1st qtr.

~KARMA's a B*tch~

GO MIGHTY FALCONS !!!!

Amat had Los Osos on the ropes 4th Qtr 14-10, on 4th and 23, with 6 minutes remaining, Brehaut connects for a TD pass and puts his team ahead 17-14. Very tight game, Lenhart very inconsistent and certainly a very weak OL didn't help much. Amat gets ball back with under 2 minutes left but sacks and penalties buries them at LO 3 yard line where they eventually gave it up on 4th down, LO scores a meaningless TD to put the game away at 24-17 with less than 5 seconds on the clock. Price and Johnson were solid all night on Defense. Lenhart does not know how to read defenses and needs alot of work, wish Thropay was on the team. Orange Lu next, hope you guys have a better game plan

Whitey,I know the boundaries , i was a DBar grad! DRanch shares the south attendance boundaries with Diamond Bar(ex..Lorbeer MS) Walnut and Diamond Bar both draw from Suzanne and Chaparral depending on the lottery and where the kids chose to attend. My point was that Diamond Ranch should be glad that Diamond Bar HS existed being that it really wouldnt have any other area to pull from.

Fred,
A couple weeks ago you wrote an article on the ingredients that make a successful program. One ingredient was administrative support. When I hear of a program with 50 consecutive losses, it makes me wonder which ingredients are missing. For the sake of the future football players and students at Ganesha, can you, as a journalist, put some pressure on the school with an expose on what the heck is happening over there? Would they benefit from dropping to 8-man?

He'll do it if one of his buddies goes over there.

Anyone who was at the Ganesha game and follows their athletic programs noticed a difference in the program last night. Coach Fleming is doing a phenomenal job and will win a game soon-plus Julian Garcia is for real (161 yards and two TD's!). Demosgraphics have a lot to do with Ganesha's record-over 90% Hispanic and over 90% low income. Our boys soccer team is consistently one of the best in So. Cal, but none of our boys grow up playing football.
As for Duarte-the coaches have obviously done a good job, but noone outside of their league thinks much of them because they probably have similar demographics. Makes you wonder why you would run the score up on your brothers from another mother!

Chingon(s) & The Mighty Falcons,

Don't be too self-righteous regarding Azusa's win over hapless Ganesha.

As I recall, the 'Mighty Falcons' did the EXACT same thing last year.

Remember? C'mon you 'member'....

And worse, your 'Brave & Fearless' head coach felt it necessary to run-up the score 85-0.

I bet all of Duarte was proud...Geez, I get teary-eyed just thinking about it.

PATHETIC !!!!

Follower (nice name),
Take it easy man, they gotta start somewhere.

Fred, the scoreboard looks great. I'll take Muir against DR.

I for one am impressed. Azusa beat Ganesha. WOW! Hurray! HA! HA! HA!

Go Falcons......

SaintsR4real

LA's freshman team's conditioning is fine. You only won by a TD. Their problem is coaching, or lack thereof.

the only reason ganesha "won" was because i believe a forfeit or dq. not sure

Old Aztec

I hope Azusa will compete this year they play a weak schedule! If beating on teams that have 50 game losing streaks is Aztec Pride they really need to get checked, have some pride and play a tougher schedule!!

Their first game tonight was against a team that has 50 losses in a row. WOW what an accomplishment!!. Next they play a team that was 0 and 10 last year too! WHOO!! Their third game is against the losingest team in the valley in the past decade in Mt View. Yikes who can not win those games? The test will be the playoffs when they have to play teams such Northview, Arroyo, Rosemead, Covina, Baldwin Park, a team they dropped off their schedule because they were scared. Oh and do not forget San Dimas, a place where their old head coach is at!!. Yikes wouldn't that be something if Azusa and San Dimas meet in the playoffs? or should I say OUCH for Azusa!!!

patrick, DB and Walnut HS are in the walnut unified district, DRanch is in the Pomona unified district, 3 miles and light years apart, get a clue will you

SaintsR4real

You think the lower level games have an effect on the Varsity Game? You must be a fool. Everybody knows that the Varsity is the best of the best. It does not matter what grade you are in if you are good you play Varsity all of LAs talent is on Varsity. I have never seen a JV or Freshman score posted in the paper. Congrats on the win of the lesser talent pool. But Varsity is what it is all about. You will see LA is ready and is going to whip the little Saints. Keep thinking that because your Freshman and JV won you are going to win. And watch what happens when LA wins 35 to SD 14!!

LA is READY TO GET IT GOING!!!! YOU WILL SEE!!

FYI:
J.V.Saints over Los Altos 28 to 6.
Freshmen Saints over Los Altos 13 to 7.
can you say "SWEEP", I believe San Dimas can.

No excuses, bring your game, our boys are more than ready for you and will leave it all on the field.

It seemed the Conqs' were the ones that were out of condition, not the Saints!

it looks like Ganesha won a game in 2005. I believe the losing streak is about 28. Still bad but not close to 50.

Azusa will compete this year. Aztec Pride is back. I don't think the test came tonight, by any means, but I do believe they can take the Montview this season.....and CO the Miramonte....again.

is the amat game going to be played at LOHS or on another field?? thanks guys

Update:Azusa leads 40-13 with 1:51 left. Gaeta has 170 passing yards.

Update: Azusa fell behind 6-0 in the first on a halfback option play. But behind QB Adrian Gaeta has stormed back to lead 21-13 at the half. Zaets has 192 total yards.

West Covina Bruins Pee Wees 28 Azusa Aztecs 0

Why even bother to play? Montview league should compete in JAA and maybe they will eke out a win or two.

BarnBurner, something you need to remember but problably arent even old enough to rememnber; Diamond Bar and Walnut paved the way for Diamond Ranch to even exist! The tradition of athletics in the area should be given credit to the 2 schools.Furthermore i give you guys less than 3 yrs you will be another Chino, good athletes but scandalous coaching who will win at all cost.Last but not least,Diamond Ranch is technically Phillips Ranch so i dont even know why you guys even keep bringing up Diamond Bar. I know i would prefer academics over athletics anyways.By the way , CLEAN up those nasty azz stadium bathrooms!!

Hey Chingo it could be worst ...Ganesha could be Diamond Bar. Now there's a dog! All that history, all those resources, all that funding. nice uniforms, killer stadium, tons of fan support and what did they do the past few years? Complain about demographic shift and hate on Diamond Ranch.

Going to the Azusa-Ganesha game tonight. Should be a barn burner. Hopefully they let everyone out of the barn first.

Friday it's Bishop Amat vs Los Osos for the first half and Los Altos vs. San Dimas for the second half.

Don't you just love football?

Following a 0 - 0 tie, Ganesha will forfeit after regulation. My 13 year old daughter and 10 of her girlfriends could jack Ganesha or Azusa!

Ha! Ha! hA! I can't stop laughing. Is this how Azusa going to show us how good they are. By beating Ganesha. He! He!. You guys suck. Trying to prove youself by beating the step child of the league. I would expect alot more from an Aztec. Thats like saying I'm the best fighter because I can beat up my little sister. I'm rooting for Ganesha.

Falcon Pride...

Reality Czech, Breaking News...that would be awful.

Azusa 41 Ganesha 22, one for the nonexistent Nielsen ratings...

Poor Ganesha.

You guys ever seen the ESPN piece on Jason McElwain, the autistic kid who actually got to play one high school basketball game and then ended up draining six 3-pointers and got carried off the court by his teammates? You can't help but root for such a huge underdog. I'm a grown man and when I see that story I start to tear up!

Well that's how I see Ganesha. Poor little autistic Ganesha has lost 49 straight games and can barely even score. Deep down, unless you're an Azusa fan, you gotta be rooting for The Giants to beat the Aztecs. Come on Ganesha, shock the world! Maybe you'll even make ESPN or Sports Illustrated!

Azusa-2 Ganesha-0
4th quarter Ganesha snap goes out of the end zone

ganesha 6 azusa 5

a late second hail marry wins it

FYI: Bishop Amat coach Steve Hagerty said Nick Lenhart will start on Friday against Los Osos
