Football: Tribune Top 10

| | Comments (86) |

South Hills beat Ayala last week to stay No. 1 in the Valley.

Tribune Rankings
1. South Hills (1-0)

Faces major test vs. La Habra
2. Charter Oak (2-0)
Offense looked in high gear
3. Bishop Amat (1-1)
Stuns Orange Lu, WesCo next
4. Bonita (2-0)
Takes care of business
5. San Dimas (2-0)
Mr. Inside does in SEM
6. Diamond Ranch (1-1)
Rebounds with win vs. Colony
7. West Covina (2-0)
Takes on Amat
8. Northview (1-0)
Defense steps up
9. Glendora (0-1)
Drops one after opening loss
10. Rosemead (1-0)
Panthers maul Colts

Comments: It's always been my philosophy in rankings that once a team has solidified a position, it holds on to that rating as long as it keeps winning, so South Hills and Charter Oak remain at Nos. 1 and 2 following victories. Bishop Amat made a statement with big win over Orange Lutheran and is solid at No. 3. Bonita and San Dimas stay at Nos. 4 and 5 after winning. Eight of last week's top 10 won, with only Glendora, which dropped to No. 9, and South El Monte, which dropped out of the top 10, being the only losers. Rosemead showed it belonged with a big win over Covina and takes over No. 10.

I'm still sticking to the Saints - Montclair prediction 49-9, even without our "Special K" Kyle Withem. Kyle's doing fine. There seems to be unproven accusations that led to his uneligibility. He plans on clearing things up as soon as possible. I wish him luck.

FYI: San Dimas Freshmen undefeated 3-0. San Dimas Junior Varsity undefeated 3-0.

i doubt very seriously that anyone on amat's staff is the person writing those posts. i'm certain they are confident enough in theirs and the players' abilities to simply coach and let the players play. i don't think you have to worry about that.

Somebody better put a lock on the mental hospital door, Big Bro is referring to DIVISON not league. I wouldn't say last season CO victory over Glendora in the final seconds doesn't make one team better than the other. After all, the year before Glendora barely beat CO in the final seconds. I'd say last years CO and Glendora teams were pretty equal. The difference being, CO didn't have to face Corona Centennial (#1 team in the state) in the playoffs.

Glendora did beat Upland last year, which very handley took care of CO.

So where do we go from here?

Max Mercy said:

Didn't South Hills just beat a Sierra League team? At least the last time I checked Ayala was in the Sierra League. And I believe Charter Oak beat Glendora last year, and they are a Sierra League team as well.

reality czech said:

read it again-big bro said "Try playing in a division of "Great teams" like Glendora and Amat plays in". he didn't claim anyone was a great team but the DIVISION has great teams. If CO & SH were in that division they'd have an early exit too. and if either were in the Serra league-they'd be winless.

Talk about good teams said:

Ok, How did Glendora and Amat do in the play-offs last year?? Seeings how they are both "great Teams, playing Great teams", according to you. Yeah, so what's your point?? You can lose like the rest??? Dope! CO Beat glendora and SH would have crushed Amat last year. You hanging around with BC Faithful???

Big Brother said:

Charter Oak vs. South Hills in 3 months

This argument regarding who goes further in the playoffs is old and tiring. A "very good" team will advance further in the playoffs when playing "good" teams. A "very good" team will not advance very far when playing "great" teams.

CO and SH divison is full of "good" and "very good" teams. Try playing in a divison of "Great teams" like Glendora (last season before restructure) and Amat plays in. How far would CO or SH get against teams like Corona Cenntennial, Redlands EV, MD or OL? Like I thought, big fish in a very small pond!

Joe Amat said:

M.B.,

Absolutely right. When you're playing someone who should beat you, you have to hope they have a bad day, or make them have one. Then you've got to play well. Recipe for upsets. I wrote this earlier,

"Good teams win the games they *should* win and, once in a while, will knock off someone that they *could* beat. Sometimes, good teams get knocked off by teams that *could* beat them. THAT'S what happened on Friday with Amat/Olu.

Great teams win the games they *should* win and don't lose those games they *could* lose. It's hard to be *great*. I don't think there are any of those around these parts.

Every game on Amat's schedule is one where the opponent *could* win. Be ready. There are some coming up that we *should* win. Perform your best. There are also some left that the opponent *should* win - but we *could* win. Believe!"

When CO gets done with beating on the little guys, then you might take on a preseason schedule like the Tartans.

Joe Amat descibed CO's preseason schedule best when he said that CO beat" 0-2 Aliso Niguel (who lost to Newport Harbor (58-7), that powerhouse program from Pioneer, and the expected win over Diamond Bar (especially after their 2-8/0-5 record from last year)". Hey, how more impressive is that!!

Trib shouldn't rank CO #2 just because they whooped A$$ on terrible programs. Do you guys need your confidence built up before starting league?

Just Wondering said:

San Dimas High School is great this year. However, these two games the next two weeks so perfectly illustrate the problem with many SGV teams. They play small local schools that will simply not test their abilities. This is also why Amat will always have something of a claim on any #1 spot in the SGV. The fact is, Amat plays tuffer teams. If they are better than any of the local teams (i.e. San Dimas, Charter Oak, etc...) is anyones guess, because Amat is willing to play teams like OLu.
I think Amat is a shadow of the program it was 15 or 20 years ago. Amat is still strong, but Amat has, for several years now, been going backward while small programs like San Dimas, Azusa, Workman, etc. have been going the oposite direction with their programs. Keep in mind, I'm not comparing the programs. Amat vs. San Dimas is as big an "apples and oranges" debate as there possibly could be. So let's not go there. However, programs like San Dimas need to stretch a little and play some big teams (maybe some OC teams) before they will ever be able to be a part of the conversation involving Amat. The shame of it is, they (SD) probably belongs in the conversation, but their schedule doesn't give them the chance.

Amat by 14 over West Covina.

San Dimas by 35 over whatever the name of the team is.

Big Brother said:

CO should schedule decent opponents during pre-season if they want to get any respect. They beat weak teams and then they show a high rank on the Tribs list. At least Glendora schedules BIG TIME competition. Amat may lose a few games here and there, but look at the high caliber of their opponents. Come on CO, pick on somebody your on size!

reality czech said:

Joe Amat said:

The only ranking that really matters is the CIF poll at the end of the season. In most sports those are used as a guideline for the playoff pairings (along with other parameters ie: league finish, geography when relevant, etc)

Subjective newspaper rankings, no offense, mean nothing except to create a little buzz. The polls are fodder for friendly banter between fans, not-so-friendly arguments and the occasional "you've got to be kidding me" moments. This is just one of those. I agree somewhat with Steve's "... philosophy in rankings that once a team has solidified a position, it holds on to that rating as long as it keeps winning...". I guess I would question his definition of "solidified". Guessing where someone should be placed after reviewing returners, hearing about some passing league contests played with half a team (and probably not the most important half!), and interviewing some coaches is not an exact science. How much merit and weight should be placed on rankings that come out before a squad has even hit the field for a real game? That's "solidified"? Early season rankings should be fairly "fluid" in the first few weeks of real action to self-correct for the inherent inaccuracy that comes with the guesswork. Note the college polls when USC's performance on the field quickly moved them form 5 to 1 - because the question marks that placed them at 5 were answered. Georgia, on the other hand, dropped with less than stellar performance - compared to the Trojans.

Back to the original point. Rankings are rarely a progressive order of teams based on who would beat who in a head-to-head matchup. They are largely a function of the teams schedules. At the end of the season, it might be tough to rank a 6-4 team over a 9-1 team... even if it is clear that the 6-4 team might roll over them on a Friday night.

The basic scheduling choices are really two-fold: First, you can create a difficult pre-league schedule and become more "battle tested" for the rigors of league play or the challenges of the playoffs. Or that tough schedule will balance an easier league schedule to properly test a teams ability over the course of a season. Secondly, a somewhat easier schedule can be constructed to allow the team to obtain a few more victories and develop a little bit of confidence. Both methods have their advantages, but also come with some pitfalls.

Playing a tougher schedule may result in more losses than normal, but the game-to-game combat against challenging competition teaches players what they need to do to get better. Maintaining a positive attitude is crucial and the process could be beneficial as the team improves looking toward league and the playoffs. Understand that the added losses will, no doubt, result in a lower ranking in the standings or polls.

Because these are used, in the CIF's case, to determine seedings come playoff time, If this method of scheduling is chosen, you can`t complain about the rankings because the intended result is: it just doesn`t matter who the team plays in the playoffs, as they have already seen the type of play that is required to advance. So they may start lower and have a more difficult road to follow - but they are ready for it.

On the other hand, a slightly less challenging schedule can have its advantages as well. A very good record will undoubtedly improve a teams "ranking" and may get them an easier road in the playoffs. But beware - a schedule that is too simple may not provide the types of obstacles needed to prepare to defeat quality opponents. this may result in an earlier than expected departure from the playoffs, and a disappointing end to the season.

So, as far as the polls go, they're fun to debate, but in reality, it just doesn't matter. Get it done between the lines

I have to agree Steve you most likely never even picked up a football and have never donned pads, so this coming from a sportswriter who has never played the game I can see where you are confused. With that ranking I guess Workman should be number 5 at least.. they are 2-0. If you asked Bogan and Farr if they are deserving to be ahead of a Bishop Amat in your fantasy Poll ..well you know the answer. they would disagree with you Steve as well. The ranking from here on out should be The Triune SGV Fantasy Football Rankings.

Don said:

You know these lists are fun to talk about but some of you guys take them way too seriously. For one thing, nobody has played more than two games and even the CalTech types would tell you that isn't enough sampling to adequately rate teams.

Another issue is what exactly is the rating criteria? It's so vague here that I am reminded of some of the radio stations back in the day who used “listener requests” to build play lists. A couple of teenagers with telephones could send a song to the top overnight, with a bullet.

I'm serious when I say they are doing the best they can with limited knowledge and understanding of the game and no firsthand account to rely on so the validity of their picks are bias and subjective based on other criterias other than X's and O's.

We do not need them to show us were #1 to believe were the very best team in the Valley because anyone who has played the game before knows there is no better team than us. Game Over!

You Tribune boys are ridiculous, What are these your rules, if you keep winning you stay on top. Come on Bishop Amat just knocked off a Nationally ranked team an you have them at 3 what a crock. Boy Ayala really compares to Orange Lutheran. Give me a break you guys are so full of SHyt. You will catch hell from the Amat crowd if you attend Friday..you will get booed. Now I wonder why your tribune is so down in readers and is about to go belly up.
