03,
No worries...no animosity in the answer. I just wanted to be clear. I kinda think USC will be the Top Dog as long as Pete Carroll is interested enough to keep them there. But Slick Rick sure is going to make it a "fierce and friendly" competition.
("no I'M 4 L.A....classic!")
I do notice that EVERY time Rick interviews he props Walker and Chow to give them the credit that they deserve. he knows what a good thing he has going. If Walker can be content with being recognized as one of the best college defensive guru's (like Chow is on offense) things will be fine. If he's looking to cash in and make some bank... he could be off to a stint as a Head Coach.
But assistants need to be careful what they wish for - they just might get it. Lane Kiffen jumped the gun and is paying for it dearly with Al Davis and the Raiders. Another couple years of USC dominance and maybe he's an Urban Meyer kind of guy (who I really like). So Walker needs to be careful and not jump at the first thing out there.
Bottom line is that we've got two amazing universities with GREAT college football coaches and dynamic personalities that players LOVE to play for. It's a good time to be a college football fan in LA.

@ Joe Amat
no animosity behind the question. i was just looking for your opinion.
that would be ideal, you have to 2 SoCal teams battling it out for BCS. i think its coming back to the Rose Bowl in '09, that would be niiiiice... unfortunately our Pac 10 schools are that tough so that wacky BCS is not going to show them that much love. Not unless we schedule some tough non-conference games(i.e. Tennessee, and Ohio St.).
Here is a new thought though. Do you think Dewayne Walker is going to stay with the bruins. He got passed over this time around, and really, no matter what Neuheisel does, UCLA defense has been strong for several years. I'm hearing over here in Trojan land that Walker is gettins some serious offers for Head Coaching spots.

03,
Nowhere was there any mention of UCLA "outrecruiting" USC. But for years it's been a "no-brainer" - and now kids may have a choice. I think that the Bruins would be pretty happy if, as you say, "it will be a couple years before they are a contender on the national scene."
My hope is that we don't lose anymore SoCal footballers to Saban and the out-of-staters and the USC/UCLA game decides who goes to the Rose Bowl and who plays in the BCS National Championship game.

@ Joe Amat
Do you really believe UCLA is going to out recruit USC? Those are valiant efforts and we over here at SC like the ambition of the bruins. we hope they do get some outstanding recruits, it makes for a good competitive atmosphere. But the Bruins are going to have to do more the jet-set around Southern Cali, it will be a couple years before they are a contender on the national scene. Right now Alabama and Coach Saban are cleaning up. They are taking kids from Cali believe it or not. As of right now, SC has more #1 prospects committed than any other college(locally) nationally, not to bad either.

@ West Side Shout Out
to answer you question, it all depends. are we talking locally, or all-time greats? Recent or Past?
To have physically seen in person recently:
Thats tough, there are so many H.S. standouts. I go outside the SGV to Centennial(Corona) they have a MLB name Vontaze Burfict. Nice raw talent. Headed to USC more than likely. Nice canidate for the #55 jersey. Also tight end name Morell Presley coming out of Carson. He looked good on film against Mater Dei.
College: The ones i have seen personally, recently, Terelle Pryor warmed up out here for the Trojans. The hype is true. I'm with the Trojans all the way, but this guys is just simply an amazing athelete. has the ability to take over an entire game. we are talking about a freshman, in the years to come, the possibilities are scary.
NFL: Hands down has to be Adrian Peterson. Not all time greatest, but great for right now. His work ethic is un-matched right now, we are the same age and went to the same camps. I know he took all that with him through college to the league.
now if we are talking all-time greats, then thats a whole different thread.
who would you say are the greatest?

According to the Times high school Blog, Neuheisel's son is a QB for the Loyola Cubs Sophmore team.
Aparently, they do not have a JV team, so I believe that this is the team would play the Amat JV's on Saturday, November 1st at Glendale high school, 4pm.
Could be intersting, because maybe he will hang around after that game and watch the varsity.
According to that same story, it seems that he missed out on the Amat Los Osos game because the Sherrif's department would not let him land his hellicopter on the Los Osos basball field durring the game.

How about this one? A few SGV targets
Rick Neuheisel is pulling out all the stops.
Before the season kicked off, UCLA ran a full-page ad in an area newspaper that said, "The football monopoly in Los Angeles is officially over." Then the Bruins went out and upset Tennessee in Week 1.
Rick Neuheisel made a big impression with his recruiting efforts following the big win against Tennessee.
Last Friday, Neuheisel found a creative way to get out in front of as many L.A.-area recruits as possible in one night.
After watching the nation's No. 1 guard, Michael Philipp, play for San Bernardino Arroyo Valley at home against Pasadena High, Neuheisel fought through Los Angeles' traffic to make it to the Inglewood High-Long Beach Wilson game. Neuheisel was there to check out four-star receivers Shaquelle Evans and Jemari Roberts.
He wasn't done.
After watching Evans and Roberts, Neuheisel drove to the Hawthorne Airport and got in a helicopter to fly out to the Inland Empire to watch La Puente Bishop Amat on the road against Rancho Cucamonga Los Osos. That game featured Bruin commits Richard Brehaut from Los Osos and cornerback Sheldon Price from Bishop Amat.
Neuheisel wasn't able to land at the school as expected, and was forced to land at Ontario Airport. By the time he got to the game, it was over. Nevertheless, a big impression had been made.
"It was awesome that Coach Neuheisel would have that much dedication to his recruits that he would come to our games in a helicopter," Brehaut said. "He was never able to land even though he had permission from the school, but the sheriff didn't allow him to land on our baseball field.
"Still, it was very cool."
UCLA assistants also were on the road. The Bruins sent two assistants to Utah to watch John Martinez and Xavier Su'a Filo play. Another assistant went to Oregon to watch Charles Siddoway, and others were in Los Angeles watching Brandon Sermons' game in Pomona.
He's not messing around!

Stang 03, who would you consider the greatest football player you ever seen.
1 high school
2 college
3 pros
Good to see an alumni that loves his school.
Love to hear what the Pasadena side of town thinks.

@ Mr. Turd of Glendora
First off, don't worry about why I watch game film. I do this for the scouts and recruiters, not for myself. Beside that, any way that i can make my Stangs better, than I will do that. Its about pride and tradition, obviously something you know nothing about.
But i can see how intelligent you are, based on your comment. You say its so high school to be 'hanger on'. Isn't that contradicting??? How can you be a 'hanger on' if you are still in H.S.? wouldn't that simply just make you a fan??? If you love your team after you graduate, doesn't that make you alumni??? yea simply an assinine statement.

Reality,
The reality is we won't be talking ANY smack on Saturday. We know that. But, again, I like when teams like Muir, DR, BA, and others schedule teams that are considered top notch. It's a great barometer and helps you become a better team in the long run.
Posted by: The Stang Fan | September 10, 2008 2:36 PM
Stangs03....
Why are you watching game film "Stop playing the high school hanger on...it's embarassing. It's so high school...go pop some pimples or something equally productive"

We've kind of addressed the "Best Athlete in the SGV" until Donny put that conversation to bed with Jackie Robinson but I'd like to ask another. THANKS DON! lol
Apologies to the "I hate Old Farts coming on here and reliving the past" bloggers but what coach made what speech or what motivating comment that turned a game or a player around.
Notre Dame has the "Win One For The Gipper Speech". Every player has one. Every team has one. That moment when the impossible is made possible. When David slays Goliath. When all you have is a rock in your hand and the conviction that you are about to unleash Holy Hell on someone bigger and stronger than you. You don't always win, at least not on the socreboard, but you will remember THAT moment for the REST OF YOUR LIFE.
Thanks Coach.

Damien faces a crucial contest this week against St. John Bosco. The key on offense will be the adjustments made for offensive line DURING the game. Word has it that SJB might have it's best defensive team in 10 years. That's tall talk but clearly Damien will have to run to win. Pound the rock and beat them at the "weakness in the strenght". Long at the FLANK JOB Mc Cain is doing to Obama. Wasn't "CHANGE"...Obama's line?
Bishop Amat is in the wings but this game could make or break the Spartan coaching staff. I mean that respectfully. Nothing beats a staff as much as players who know you have no answers. Just look at what happened to BA'S Verti. It wasn't as much Verti as it was his "staff" that let him down. We'll see.
The key to winning tough physical games is to stay focused as a team, play within yourselves and ultimately stick to the game plan. Adversity is a given. Pain is a given. The only thing you MUST decide is ...is your will stronger than the other guy, individualy AND collectivey. so that HE has more ADVERSITY and more PAIN when the going gets really tough? Are you willing to inflict that adversity and pain at all costs?
The winner of a physical game UNDERSTANDS the situation and COMMITS to beating you every down, man on man....on offense, on defense, on the sidelines, in the parking lot, in the locker room...where ever the battle is YOU ARE THERE! Each player doing his job....and MOST IMPORTANTLY...NEVER LOSING FAITH IN YOUR POSITION COACHES. The man who gets in your face and asks the tough questions. The man who you'll NEED to BELIEVE in as you come off the field and get ready to do battle again and again.
Long Live Sparta !
Class of 2009...you're up.

Their back up QB should be starting. Montana is just there because of the name. The backup is wayyyyyyyyyyy better. I think he was a transfer from Serna.

Reality... you finally showed up. so much for DRanch.
about OC, hey I wont put it passed them that they may blow us out. But they may not. Just got done reveiwing the tape of the Bakersfield game. Good skill players. but they made some dumb mistakes. Turnovers being one of them. If our speed can cause disruption and force the TO, then we have just as good a chance as anybody. More than DRanch will, ill say that.

Posted by: rout of the week | September 10, 2008 12:02 AM
Glendora vs. Upland of course. Two of the top teams in that division squaring off in week one. What can be better? Two high powered offenses with two great Quarterbacks! Sounds like game of the week to me.

lets see the game of the week, it's Orange Lutheran vs. Amat. easily trumps all these div XII games,
