Check This Out: State Bowl Rankings Released -- Bishop Amat No. 8

For quarter-by-quarter updates of tonight's games, click thread

West Covina's Ricky Johnson rushes for 183 yards in 28-21 win over Glendora.

Tonight's results
Charter Oak 14, Rancho Cucamonga 14 -- Coaches agree not to play overtime. Chargers came back after trailing14-6 at half.
Bishop Amat 47, Damien 24 -- With Charter Oak tying, Lancers go to No. 1 next week -- convincingly I might add. Seriously, how good is this offense?
West Covina 28, Glendora 21 -- Bulldogs control the line of scrimmage, Ricky Johnson rushes for 183 yards.
South Hills 48, Duarte 6 -- You knew this would get ugly quick. Hills just too much.
Rowland 21, Northview 12 -- Don't know if I put this in the shocker category, but fact is the Vikings' offense isn't what it's supposed to be.
Bonita 49, Baldwin Park 14 -- Never thought the Braves' defense could give up that much. Then again, they have problems against good passing teams.
San Dimas 56, Ontario 21 -- Saints roll again. Can we officially say this is the best team in school history?
Ayala 21, Los Altos 19 -- What gives? That's three straight close losses to good teams.
Harvard-Westlake 45, Rosemead 6 -- Knew it would be tough with Sumler, but what happened?
Diamond Bar 35, Brea Olinda 24 -- Good win after last week's humbling loss to Charter Oak.
Schurr 31, Wilson 28 -- Tim Gilmore couldn't save them this time. At some point, the Wildcats need stops.
South El Monte 52, La Puente 16 -- Called this a mile away. Eagles offense among the best in the Valley.
Chaffey 27, Nogales 6 -- Nobles having lots of problems putting points on the board.
Western Christian 35, Sierra Vista 28 -- Don't look know, but that small private school is 4-0.
Walnut 44, Covina 20 -- With Rowland and Walnut winning, the San Antonio might get interesting. Rhodes had three TD's.
El Monte 33, Gladstone 0 -- The real surprise is how far Happy Rock has fallen.
Mountain View 28, Keppel 8 -- Not a surprise, Vikings that much better.
Ganesha 27, Bassett 14 -- That's two wins and counting.
Claremont 23, Arroyo 20 -- Knights close, but can't get over the hump.
Montclair 32. Workman 27 -- Another undefeated team goes down.
Saturday's game
Chino Hills 22, Diamond Ranch 21 -- Not good with Amat in two weeks.

Playing in the end zone at SAC. I never would have guessed you are that younger then this old Lancer. I was in my early years at AMAT when we played there. Anymore hints. Joe was Kenny the ball boy one of your buddies.

Well King Stud it was really easy. I am basically the same person saying the same things. Kids first. The only difference is I don't have the ambushing cowards making a mockery of of everything I say and do. Maybe parents at Damien had to admit pouring Green paint on my new car was going too far given the charity and contributions I've made to that school. Like I've said before anyone who would punish my kids for the things I've said is a coward plain and simple. And that goes for Damein coaches as well. Especially when what I've said is truthful and honest.

Besides if anyone has ever met me in person or knows the things I've done for people they wouldn't have stood on the sidelines while people like you and others took me to the woodshed..anonymously. I've always wondered about that lack of rebuttal but then again that's just me. I stand by my friends and never allow others to hurt them IF I can do something.

The truth is all sports REVEALS CHARACTER...IT DOESN'T CREATE CHARACTER. I haven't lost mine while others regrettably have compromised theirs.

I'll stand by those words and over time I think it holds true. This past week taught me allot about people in general and bloggers in particular.

I meet DR"s coach Roddy Layton at the Damien/Amat game. I've heard all the nonsense on the blog about him and after spending a night talking with him and hearing his views on life and sports..I've come to know that this blog is nothing more than a bastardization of real people for a hundred different reasons.

I also learned that there are good people EVREYWHERE. San Dimas is a great example of parents coming together to right a wrong. I learned of a young man's character and the integrity that a mother instills in her children against all odds. Having the courage to be proven RIGHT is greater than the accusations of small men. People are good by nature..it takes NUTURE to create a fool or a coward. IF I'm a captain or team mate on that team I walk I protest. NO JUSTICE NO PLAY. It's what you do for OTHERS that speaks volumes about you. INTEGRITY DOESN'T COME CHEAP. That's why it's such a rare commodity.

Sometimes life ain't fair but you have to stay the course. Someday you too will reflect on the pain and idiocy you've caused people in the name of hilarity...or maybe not. Time will tell. Yes I know don't take it too seriously...but how can't you when you're calling people out by name?

Although I find it humorous how you seek the attention and acceptance of those you torment most? Why is that?

I do find it interesting that parents who hated me and came on here and embarassed my family are now reflecting on their kids senior season and the lack of institutional controls and seeing things differently. Most of the biggest talkers were silent before the Amat game and shockingly numb after. Ask any player or parent and they will tell you I've always been the same...trying to help the kids.

King Stud, good luck finding that accepance you so desparately crave and relentlessly pursue. Just remember that anyone can be made to look like a fool but only a fool spends their time in that endevour.

Say a prayer for Jake Salter who was injured in practice yesterday. Football is a dangerous sport and should be given the seriousness it deseves.

Maybe if you've ever looked at a kids eyes when they are so scared they temble you wouldn't make fun of everything. I had a kid once almost lose an eye and was bleeding buckets of blood everwhere. Want to know what it's like to have to open his eye lid to see if the eye is still there? Want to know what it's like to look at a kid that just wants to walk again? How about looking into the eys of a mother who wants nothing more than normalcy for her kids? Ever have a kid tell you his Dad beats him at home and sports means everything to him? Ever pay for cleats only to have the older brother steal them? Ever have a dad ask you what his son can do to play...and he's 6'4" 280 lbs and the coaching staff thinks he's a pu$$y...but he's NOT! Only to see that kid blossem into a JC starter after a all league senior season? The best part of all this is my kids know what I'm about. That's why it's NEVER affected them at Damien and they don't walk around with their heads down. Men ACT children PLAY.

Yeah I'm the guy you want to make look like a fool. Hope that wasn't too long or srious for you. I just want you to stop calling me out. Like everyone I have a bad side and ...yada yada yada. Get the picture. We done here?

It takes a big man to admit when he is wrong and come clean in such a polite and respectful manner. I will try and conduct myself as graciously as you have done.

Btw, yes, I know that the conversation ended up between you and JA, even though it did not start off that way. But for what it’s worth, this is a public forum, and all comments are open for discussion regardless of weather or not it is intended for one individual or for the rest of the bloggers here.

I’m sorry, but the fact that you kept insisting, over and over in you’re posts, that Damien had a chance to come back and win the game, was getting a bit trying after a while.

BTW, let me explain to you what I mean by that, because a comment like this deserves a little bit of an explanation.

Do you remember when Amat lost the Baseball game to Northview last year? The Amat faithful took it on the chin right? They were upset of course, but after all, what could they do or say? Northview won it on the field of play, and no matter how anyone tried to spin it, there was nothing that was going to change the outcome.

Anyway, this whole issue regarding the Damien game is much the same thing here with you, but in reverse.

Where I see the similarities here is that, just as in that Northview game, it was hard to let a loss go. You speak of special teams play and coaching and other factors that had a hand in the outcome, but all of those things including the coaching were factors that determined the game. And even if these factors were reversed, they may not have changed the outcome.

You know, many of the Amat faithful fell into the same trap during that loss to Northview. They tried to spin the loss in so many different ways. They said that if Amat were to play Northview again, that Amat would win 9 out of 10 times.

But of course, it was a pointless argument, because those two teams were never going to play each other again that year. The better team won, regardless of the fact that the loser had a chance to win the game (just as the victor did) before the game even started

What made that discussion all the more interesting was that the haters kept slamming the team, and the coaches and all the faithful including Joe Amat, throughout the entire season simply because Amat got beat. They really rubbed it in.

Now, I am not implying that you said or did anything like this, so please don’t misunderstand here, but, again, my point it that you can’t change history, no matter how you try to spin it.

Oh and BTW, yes, you do deserve an apology from me here, and as I have stated before, when I am wrong, I man up to it. In this case, I was terribly wrong, and I need to say it to you here.

When I re-read all of you're posts, I did not find the comments that that I was looking for.
I made a mistake and realized that it was not you who said the things that I had thought you had said. Because of that, I richly deserve to be scolded by you for those comments.

However, when you take out that long stick and you get ready to take someone to task with it, then it makes no sense to call that person a name or to attack him personally. It just doesn’t make you the bigger person.

Say that I am wrong and, make you’re point about it in a constructive way. And if I am wrong, then believe me I will tell you that I am.

So, I indeed apologize to you, and whish that I had never said, what I believed were in fact you’re comments. I was truly wrong in that regard.

Observations from a SGV outsider:

1. Amat is back!! Knew it had to happen one day. The rest of the SGV should be afraid.

2. CO, WC, and SH are the only other SGV teams who have a chance to win it all.

3. La Puente is back to normal. 1 year wonders are getting pounded. Told you they weren't that good last year.

4. LA is finished and Wilson had better pray Gilmore stays healthy all year. How far both of these programs have fallen.

5. Diamond Ranch will make the playoffs. Tough non-league schedule will help them come league.

6. San Dimas is over rated. Play someone and then talk crap.

7. The IE is still hands down better than 95% of the SGV teams. Besides for the top 4 teams, the rest of the SGV sucks!

Okay, we get West Covina at Charter Oak field. We'll rush three & put everybody else in coverage, then we'll blitz one of our Linebacker's once in the whole game, after that they won't dare run againt's us. Yee Haa another easy win, looks like an undefeatd season!

Jcaz you should do one of two things. Re-read my comments and take a reading comprehension course if necessary to complete that task or two let men talk and stay out of our conversation.

Joe, 72 and 73 now where I'm coming from. Never slighted Amat. Have friends on the staff, friends on the team and ultimate respect for the history of Amat to do so. Is that clear enough for you?

Now if you want as usual to say stupid things or put people down go to the next blogger who finds that entertaining. People like you who never played, never coached and never amounted to anything always have something stupid to say.

I think our adult conversation was over and pretty settled. No I never made any mention of the things you accused me of but then again that's your nature and the reason why I'll ignore you after this last one on one ha haha entry of yours.

Hahaha is stupid childish playground punk talk where I come from. Especially when you're not part of the conversation.

Yes Amat is a way better team than Damien. Better than West Covina, Charter Oak, Los Altos, Bassett, Ganesha, Pomona, Garey, South El Monte, St. Loius of France and St. John The Baptist. Feel better?

Great game for both schools. It works well for both programs except when the cholo shitzu talkers come out of their caves.

Done with you. Vieja pendeja!

Joe Amat said:

jcaz,

I can guarantee that the Amat staff made it CRYSTAL clear that the game was not over at halftime. If you come out and do the same things that got you there - it should be.

But if you saw the Georgia/Alabama game I alluded to, Georgia was a holding call away from potentially cutting a 31-0 deficit to 31-24.. and then ANYTHING can happen.

The key is taking care of business and continuing to play - which Amat did. Otherwise - who knows!

You know that we talked "woulda. coulda, should" for a week after the Los Osos game. Then we did!

jcaz said:

Ok, get over it already. Games over, lets move on.

Let it go, and please stop with all this nonsense.

In you're posts, you seem gracious in defeat. You acknowledging the fact that Amat won the game convincingly, yet on the other hand, you're pride keeps getting in the way.

When folks point out to you the fact that the game was over by half time, you have difficulty in accepting that because you "want" to believe that Damien was a better team out on the field that night and the only reason that they lost was because of ....(fill in the blanks).

Yet, when reality sets in, and you can't get anyone to agree with you, you take a little dig at the Amat football team and say, well, we didn’t beat you of course, but, later, when you play league, or when you play a much better team, then, you will most certainly lose!

And when that happens then, ha ha ha !

Ok already, maybe you're right. Amat will most likely lose again this year, but it will have nothing to do with Damien, or the fact that they have a 100 players that would ordinarily play on Amat's team.

You know, Damien is a fine school with some great athletes, but you’re not doing them any favors here. The games over. Let it go.

My Pal Joey.

No problem. It was late and I was in coaching mode last night after spending the night on the Diamond Ranch sidelines. As a guest I was able to see both Chino Hills and Diamond RAnch up close. The game should be watched there by anyone who loves the game and thinks only head coaches are to blame for loses. If body language is a key then sideline chatter is the lock.

Diamond Ranch has a team of ballers no doubt. These kids tackle with recklesss abandon. They run ferociously and play equal to their opponents. They are old school- hit them low, wrap their legs and drive thru the ball carrier. It's really impressive how well coached they are. They have no wher near the size of Damien and yet they gave Chino Hills fits all night.

Chino Hills on the other hand is Chino Hills ... again. They rely on breaking you down. They spot a weakness and it's 6 pts going the other way. Their defense on the other hand is suspect to speed. They are a gang tackling group with disciplined assignments. ISO plays give them trouble. Deep balls give them trouble.

Diamond Ranch had no business losing last night. As you see Joey I was slightly agitated last night so please forgive my hair splitting sensitivity. My wife and kids still tell stories of my after game rants... still thinking I could have done more to win.

Chino Hills, as is their manner, celebrtaed in the middle of the DR's home field as if they won the Super Bowl. Totally Classless. They did their hollering and coach driven gruts DURING the Diamond Ranch Alma Mater. Again completely classless and gutless. Sorry I'm still hot about that.

Maybe the Chino Hills fans were still smarting from the a44 whupping they received from DR last year. Incidentally that Chino Hills team quit on themselves last year. Anyone who saw them last year against Damien know they quit on Roche and ultimately themselves.

Against Damien and the Mendrun Miracle they refused to put the final winning score on the scoreboard. And the announcer refused to acknowledge the TD as well. That was classless as well.

One thing I will say after seeing DR play so hard and so valiantly. A team is a team. I'll repeat that once agin. A TEAM IS A TEAM. Individual issues, no matter how important at the time, have no business during the game.

I think Roddy Layton does one hell of a job. I like his demeanor, his willingness to play the best and his management of the game. He's a coach any player would love to play for. But games are won on the field and lost on the sidelines. Nuff said on that.

Last night valiant boys let one get away. I found myself thinking about DR's next game with Amat. Do they have a chance of winning? Yes they do have a chance. But everything and everyone has to be right to win. Amat on the other hand canwin on a bad night. Just like you said Joe. But off the field Amat has already won.

Amat's mission when they hired Hags was two fold. Get the Alumni and their $$$$ back on board and two ... steal the local talent by any means necessary. Hey it's emcumbent on the local schools to keep their players. I grant you that but blow out wins make parents think twice about what side of field they want to side on.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED AMAT.

Damien will be back next year stronger and faster having seen a Division 1 team up close and personal. But these seniors will never forget why you should never discount good advice..especially when it hurts your ears and buises your ego. Best of luck Spartans. I've often said this Damien team would win a Championship and IF you do they'll have Amat to thank for showing you the way.

Amat 73, 72 and Joey....thanks for the football dialouge and good luck to your respective teams.

LONG LIVE SPARTA !!!

Because of Fred's and Steve's thorough and complete defense of their choice in ranking CHARTER OAK ahead of AMAT on their last poll,I think that the game to attend this Friday has got to be DAMIEN VS. CHARTER OAK.

At last we will have some sort of "measuring tool" to use when comparing the Chargers with the Lancers. Of course, anything less that a dominating performance by Charter Oak would be a disappointing ordeal given the hype surrounding this team. I truly believe that what happens during this game will help determine whether or not CO will schedule AMAT in the near future.

The Amat vs. Damien game was over by halftime. The Amat first string players left that game with a 40-10 victory. We'll see how the Chargers fare.

Joe Amat said:

My Pal Sparta,

I don't know if MY post was poorly worded OR it was just 1:00 AM when you read it. Maybe you you were depressed over all the NCAA upsets (or celebrating ) - but either way I apologize for ANY misunderstanding.

I'm going to repost again for you to read during a more decent hour. Then read it (and listen to the sound bit) without any knowledge what movie the quote is from. No disrespect was intended... and to be perfectly honest, I use that quote in a positive sense all the time. I don't care of the chance is 1 10, 1 in 100, or 1 in a million... you ALWAYS have that chance. We showed that vs OLu... and I said several times in the days since, that if we're not careful - we could be someone elses OLu

I wrote this about 10 days ago:

Absolutely right. When you're playing someone who should beat you, you have to hope they have a bad day, or make them have one. Then you've got to play well. Recipe for upsets. I wrote this earlier,

"Good teams win the games they *should* win and, once in a while, will knock off someone that they *could* beat. Sometimes, good teams get knocked off by teams that *could* beat them. THAT'S what happened on Friday with Amat/Olu.

Great teams win the games they *should* win and don't lose those games they *could* lose. It's hard to be *great*. I don't think there are any of those around these parts.

Every game on Amat's schedule is one where the opponent *could* win. Be ready. There are some coming up that we *should* win. Perform your best. There are also some left that the opponent *should* win - but we *could* win. Believe!"

So , very sorry for the slight, if you took it that way. Here it is to read again. maybe even try without the movie quote, if the movie title invokes different feelings. With the quote - use that at face value and what I KNOW that you truly believe and tell your kids all the time.

You ALWAYS have a chance!

********************************
Sparta comes from a different place. He used to coach. And if you've coached... you remember that when you practice, or address that team in the locker room, you always have a chance. Even if it's a small one... there's a chance. Kinda like this
http://www.moviesoundscentral.com/sounds/dumb_and_dumber/dumb42b.wav

This evening Georgia walked into halftime down 31-0 and I know Mark Richt thought they had a chance... and his players came out and played like it. Turned into a decent 2nd half because of that.. and his Bulldogs grew a bit because of that. We made some adjustments after the Los Osos game. That's why you play good teams... to find out what it takes for you to be really good. I think the West Covina Bulldogs probably took some things to heart and used those lessons on the Tartans this week. Maybe the Spartans can do the same against the 'sister kissin' Chargers (I joke. I can't fathom why RC said no OT -but that's just me) And for what it's worth - I was rooting for the Chargers to beat Rancho. It's always good for the SGV to pick up a win out of the area.

And Sparta - you're right. I was one of those kids playing football in the end-zone at MSAC back in the day. THAT"S how you build tradition. Players need to realize that those little guys look up to them... and they just might end up being the guys that they come back to see play several years later. Teach them well.

Here's to many years of the Amat/Damien battle. Looking forward to the trip to that nice field in La Verne next year.

At 3-1 and two weeks to prepare this coaching staff will really scheme in this game. I understand Dranch also has a bye week I may be wrong. anyone that steps on the field has a chance before the game begins. that is absolutely true. west covina had a chance before the game started and diamond ranch has a chance as well. when i say damien had no chance, i mean once i saw both teams when the game started to unfold. i didn't feel that amat was ever in any real danger of relinquishing the lead and can't think of any scenarios in that particular game where they would have. that being said, it was a dominant performance in my mind. 24 points? i think somewhere in your post you mentioned you coached at some point or are a coach now. if this is the case, i'm sure you will agree that 14 of those points came against kids who don't play very much. i don't think 2 touchdowns being scored on 2nd and 3rd stringers is an indictment on amat's defense. again, good luck on the rest of the season.

It was in his destiny to wear the Blue and Gold. I commend him and all the other Lancers who stuck it out thru the past 2 seasons because their loyalty to their Alma Mater is paying off for them big time. These kids are having the time of their life and if they stay the course and continue to prepare, stay humble something great could await them."

In fact think about all the players that Amat would welcome if Damien had a fire sale. A beatdown is a shut out. Damien scored as much as Otange Lutheran. Even though Amat was up 40-10 at one point.

IF Damien had no chance of beating Amat I would say so. If Amat would have shut them out I would agreed with you and others but Damien scored 24 points. Great defenses don't give up 24 points to a Jr. QB with very little varsity experience and 10 points in his first 2 starts and a 5'5"125 lb starting tailback with quick feet and gorillas nuts. Or do they?

Like I said special teams hurt Damien in a big way. How many points and great field position did Amat generate from special teams alone? Maybe Amat beats Damien 9 out of 10 times but then again I'm thinking they have a chance. After the game that's what I'd tell my team. We beat them next time. And get to work proving that point the rest of the season. But that's me.... I believe I can find flaws in any sytem. I see 3 in yours.

Maybe Joey if you really think Damien didn't ever have a chance to win that game ...well doesn't that say more about you than Damien. How about playing West Covina and Diamond Ranch? Do they have a chance against Amat? Like a Dumb and Dumber chance? IF they do than all those comments about playing down sit on your plate..don't they?

I never scheduled any team that didn't have a chance to beat us. In fact I scheduled teams that should beat us but didn't. That builds unity and trust in the coaching staff. Scheduling people you can beat only speaks to your need to rebuild what is lost...your credibility. Your willingness to play the best is not what you guys are doing this year Maybe that's what Amat needs to get the locals but telling them they have NO CHANCE of winning only is bad form. How else can you explain playing Salesian 3 times?

The dumb and dumber jab was what got Amat beat in the first place Joey. Believing that no one had a chance to beat Amat. Carson proved otherwise. Maybe Diamond Ranch will as well. If Diamond Ranch beats you who will play the Jim Carey role? And to those that say Diamond Ranch doesn't stand a chance...my question is WHY SCHEDULE THEM?

Roggy Layton has 33 freshmen try out for DR's team. Amat has that many? I understand DR's reasoning....after that dumb and dumber comment I don't understand Amat's anymore.

Best of luck feasting on the locals...I'll wait until the playoffs to see Dumber and Dumber 2. Best part of that movie is the Jeff Daniels taking a dump. IF you ever become over confident that's what it'll sound like all the way up the hills.

Amat 73....I coached those St Louis of France kids. Making my point with Mark Lujan is a credit to Amat and certainly NOT a slight at Mark...on the contrary. Mark reflects what Amat pride is all about. Buy in and be a part of something bigger than yourself. Best of luck the Lujan family. They must be very proud. Mark's come a long way from his St. Louis if France days..trust me on that one. Amat makes fottball player was my point. Poorly worded I'm sure. My apologies if anyone in his famiy thought otherwise.

UCLA was a fumble away from upsetting a Top 25 team. How is that choking?
UCLA is losing now because "Radio" left very little in the cupboard. Neu is making with what he has, and the team is getting better from week to week. Ben Howland didn't make UCLA basketball into a national power overnight and Neu will not build back the football team over night.

King Stud,

You rarely hear "trash talk" initiated from most Amat regulars. You will hear us defend the Amat Family relentlessly when it's under attack. Trash talk is usually irrational and accompanied with insults. You know what you get from me... facts and, at least some attempt at a logical discussion. Not arrogant. Arrogance is a false bravado. Arrogance is making outrageous remarks that can't be backed up. It is far more arrogant to claim that you're the best - without giving yourself a chance to even try. That actually describes some others far more than it does the Lancers.

What you read here on a regular basis is Pride. Not the false kind of pride where you pump your chest - then back away, but pride that comes from a self-confidence and is expressed in a strong self-assurance. A willingness to step up to a challenge. This pride of can only be developed through years of dedication and hard work. Some might call that history. I'd call it tradition. That's what you read here.

Others seem to think that good things should come easy (Wins, League or CIF Championships), we simply don't think so. Scheduling light or dropping divisions is never a choice of a TRUE Lancer. Some suggested that was the solution the last couple of years - even prior to this season. An achievement not gained through hard work is no achievement at all. Some coaches in some sports even on our campus seem to think that is the answer. And they've lost respect (or failed to ever earn it- because of that) That too will change soon. We will achieve.

Success is our goal, but don't confuse that with just winning. You also don't hear many pre-game predictions from those that really represent AMAT. We know, all too well, that you need to bring it every day to get it done... and if you don't it can sneak up and bite you in the butt at ant time. Ask OLu. Winning is nice, a whole lot more fun, and keeps boosters and bloggers at bay, but doing everything in our ability to become the very best that we are capable of becoming is far more important.

If we accomplish this, we need never experience shame from defeat. To be defeated by a better team is part of competition. Especially when you choose to play the best. To be defeated because of lack of preparation or lack of desire during the game is unacceptable.

I don't see that happening as much on the path we're traveling

KING STUD,
Well Stud I see where you realize that we as Lancers have tremendous pride for our beloved AMAT and arrogance is a word that does not exist in a true Lancers vocabulary. It is truly great to read the words of the posters when the write of the respect our players show for the game and their opponents and the great time they have attending the games . That is truly the AMAT way. Go Lancers.
Sparta,
I for one do not know how you feel Damien could have won that game. We have disagreed before and this is just another point to discuss when we see each other again in the future . As for you thinking Mark Lujan would not play for AMAT well my friend you just do not know what being a Lancer is all about and especially if you are the son of a Lancer and an almost Uncle is a Lancer. It was in his destiny to wear the Blue and Gold. I commend him and all the other Lancers who stuck it out thru the past 2 seasons because their loyalty to their Alma Mater is paying off for them big time. These kids are having the time of their life and if they stay the course and continue to prepare, stay humble something great could await them.

There is no way in hell anyone can say that in a 23 point beat down our team had a chance to win. Damien was beaten badly last night much as in their first two losses. As much as it pains me to say this Amat does have a good team.

FC your allegiance is admirable but Damien is not a good team. Coach Morrison hasn't done the job this year and the past few years and that earlier poster is right. I believe it's time for a change at Damien. It's time Damien goes out and finds a coach who can recruit and coach at the same time.

I am surprised at the humility of amat posters so far. I expected a lot more trash talking than I am seeing. That's a good sign. I just hope the rest of Amat donkey's show some class now that their team is back.

My Pal Joey,

Without question Bishop Amat is Back. One thing that I saw in common with my alam mater is FAMILY. We love our school. Our parents WORK for the school and take TREMENDOUS pride in the fact that their children are having the time of their life being part of something greater than what the parents experienced themselves.

Your PROGRAM, big letters on purpose, is second to none. And for $5 ...well it's almost the size of a USC program....how many schools can match that?

One thing I will say is every time I go to Amat I wear my Salesian cap. It's a sign of respect for your school as well as mine. People will come on here and crap on Amat without knowledge of what is sacrifice and honor. That's their short sightedness.

One only needs to see the program and all the former alumni still involved long after their college careers could have taken them elsewhere. Same goes for Salesian.

Someday I hope to see that pride and commitment and sense of commuity at my kids school. Don't get me wrong my kids love the school but Amat and Salesian play "up" and don't make excuses for their station in life. The best part of seeing a game at both those school is the welcoming attitude of competition and the sight of young kids slapping the hands of players coming off the field...."some day...that will be me!" You can see it all around....kids dreaming.

I rememebr Mark Lujan at St. Louis of France and never thought he could play Amat football but there he was....Amat Blue and Gold. Simply Amazing.

Joey what do you think about the polls now? We'll see what shakes out with Charter Oak coming to Damien next week. Maybe Damien learns from this defeat and puts it together. IF they do. and I think they will, Amat will have played a big part in their improvement.

good luck along the way and congrats to your 2 year rant...IT WORKED!

When you're right...time will prove you right. When you're wrong...no amount of time will change that fact.

How about a run down of the Salesian vs. Bishop Amat scores form the past. Record is 2-0-1. LOL

Enjoy the season my friend.

Sparta My Pal,

I am proud of our men, and I do agree that the Spartans continued to battle, yet also noticed a couple of the"body language" issues that you mentioned. That also becomes contagious and filters through the rest of the team. Losing wears on a team... and loss of confidence in the program is worse. I hope for your sake it isn't reaching that point... we know how that feels!

I don't remember reading where you wrote anything about the Spartans should have/could have won the game. As 72 and others mentioned - from my seat that didn't seem in question either. But I don't think you said it was. I'm with you that there are a handful of Damien players that the Lancers would LOVE to have. Someday, maybe soon, Amat is the program of choice for those players.

Your point is well taken regarding the effect of quality coaching on a players *development* as well as performance. The difference is remarkable when the same player is receives quality coaching and is instilled with confidence.

Specials teams is huge... and their development speaks to what is going on all over the field. Kids are getting better... with confidence... not taking plays off - and playing through the whistle. They believe. A *former Head Coach* is the Special Teams coach. He can concentrate just on that part of the game and you can bet that it is given proper attention during preparation.. A *former Head Coach* is coaching the ever-improving offensive line. A *former Head Coach* is coaching the hard-hitting linebackers. A former Varsity Offensive Coordinator and DI receiver is coaching the receivers. CIF Champions/D1 Players of the Year as position coaches on the D-line and in the backfield. A 4-yr D1 starting QB coaching them. A retired NFL cornerback that started nearly 100 professional games is coaching the secondary and coordinating the defense.

THIS is the way it should be. A LONG way to go to get all the way back, but what a difference a year makes!

Sevenduece....where did I say anything about luck? Ayala has blocked several punts and field goals this year...is that luck? No that's great coaching.

Your special teams coach was awesome last night...ours wasn't. No luck involved. Not sure where or when you picked that up.

As far as Taylor being a mismatch on anyone...well that's a tough call. Being open and being about to get the ball to the receiver are two different things. I know I sucked at QB and can tell you NO ONE EVER catch a fly pattern if it was called in the huddle if I was the QB.

Getting open and getting separation is the key for any WR. Taylor had it all night. Check the film. Film don't lie.

As far as being close...the game was tied and at most was a 10 point and then a 3 point lead going into halftime. How is that not having a chance.

In the second half the "well coached, non lucky, well exceuted" special teams" took over.

On that out patern at the 18 that Johnson ran in...well my old Tia Chapara with one leg could have gotten a jump on that. It was Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl bad. I don't think the ball would have reached the receiver had it not been caught. No offense the DB made the play but how many did he knock down all night? Come on now.

Like I said. It's my belief Damien could have won that game just like it's my belief you should go undefeated the rest of the year or get beat by Diamond Ranch. Anything is possible...IF not I'll have to ask Orange Lutheran and see if they would agree with me or you.

I really liked the RB#20 though. Reminds me of all Amat backs...feet move, head up. follows blockers and then turns on the jets.

Tough play of the night.....that TD run that was called back after #20 ran 120 yards for a 45 yard touchdown. That was all anyone needed to see to illustrate the differences between the schools. Very next play...TD again!

That's tough to beat.

The same can't be said about the quality of athletes Damien sends to the field. But like they say to the victors goes the spoils. Great game again. Bishop amat is back and that's a good thing. Now more than ever Amat bloggers will have an opportunity to show the same amount of class on the blog as they do on the field.

with all due respect to you and the kids, coaches, and parents in the damien football family special teams is a part of football. therefore, those plays can't simply be dismissed as dumb luck. i've said it before that luck is merely when preparation meets opportunity. as for individual players, whether or not players from damien would start for amat was not at issue. i, personally, didn't see any possible way damien is even close in that game with their personnel and herrera absolute proved not to be a mismatch for anyone in the amat secondary. he scored on johnson who had just entered the game. i believe he was bottled up by johnson and price virtually the rest of the night and the coverage on him and his receiver mates was a big reason the qb was sacked several times. in fact, i think he was the target when johnson got the interception for a td. it's not a knock on the players from damien, though i was expecting a bit more from #13, it's solely my point of view. again, best of luck to both class programs.

Yes DJ seems to be faster and coach Z says hes the fastest player on the team. So if we are talking track and field then yes DJ is better. However we are talking football and Nico is the better player. All you have to do is watch. He finds his holes and goes through with speed. When an opposing player does try to stop him. They pay a price. That kid hits hard. One other thing is DJ may benefit playing with Nico. (Just as many DBs benefited playing with Deion Sanders.)Many teams focus so much on the great ones that many times the good ones to great things.

Thanks for the Amat plug, but I must concur with SevenD...with all due respect, Damien had zero, zilch, nada, niet, nicht, chance of winning this game after the 1st quarter, last night. When your guys hit, Amat hit harder, when your guys ran hard, Amat ran harder and faster, when your guys scored a couple of well earned TD's, Amat would score more and then some had Hag decided to keep the first troops in the trenches.

Damien showed up allright at Kiefer but seemed to lack any intensity other than a few "big" plays to stay in the game.....NOT.

Gaisie and Anderson ran and almost scored at will, Amat O-line created great opportunities for their RB's. This Amat team is multi-dimensional (thank God) and they will keep coming at you, until you have no more fight in you. And their D is stellar, wait till Bowens returns.

Great job Hag and Company!

Having coached at the high school level and know much of how it works you would have to have a copy for coaches to break down on a Saturday or Sunday, a copy to share/trade with other schools for week before prep, and a copy to give to you.
And then there is the trying to establish credibility statement "as I said on ESPN radio 710 last night"

Great high school players dominate their competiton. McD comes to mind. As far as his high school production go no one has had that kid of year so far.

As far as any other reference to impress that's were we might have a difference of opinion.

At least 7 players start for Amat IF they went thru your program for 4 years. Truth at 6 of those players would start right now if they had transfered. CIF rules aside.

#55 Manley starts. #60 Okafor starts.#40 Reyes starts. #13 Taylor starts. #64 Sipple starts. #77 Salter starts. And # 61 Hale who will be a Div 1 player certainly starts. Amat has great coaching but there again Amat weight lifts and prepares like no other.

It was also one of the more physical games that we've attended this year. CO played really hard in the second half and if they keep up that intensity, start making plans to watching them in late November and early December.

And, as I said on ESPN radio 710 last night, having seen all the contenders in the Baseline League play in person, I have no idea who wins the league. Very, very balanced.

And, for a guy who moved out of the neighborhood, is it a wonder then, that you don't subscribe to the tribune anymore? Duh…

I mean, It makes it kind of hard to get the paperboy to deliver you're paper out of state right?

And lastly, for a guy who hasn’t gone on this thread in several years, why then do you seem to always come back?

Oh, and one more thing, on this ranking issue, and that is that you have to keep one thing in mind here and that is that CO still hasn’t lost a game yet.

Steve cannot put Amat ahead of Charter Oak because according to Steve, you have to play yourself out of the top. Remember, Charter Oak is still undefeated and according to Steve’s logic, they should not be dethroned just because of a draw.

It's like boxing I suppose, in that you have to beat the champion and not tie with him in order to get the belt.

In other news, Crespi, Edison and Los Osos all lost last night, so I will be curious to see how far Amat moves up in the Times rankings. We could go as high as the top ten this week.

The pick by # 6 or #9 that was out of this world flat out laid out great play and the consistent down field blocking that separates Amat from most teams I've seen recently were the difference.

I don't think anyone will come on here and say Damien gave up. That's a HUGE difference form the last time Amat put a beat down on Damien. At one point the score was 40 to 10 and yes Damien kept fighting. Betance is clearly the better QB. Beats you with his feet and his legs. Kid is fearless, aloof and a gunslinger with an arm. Guillen is a tough kid, great dad but he needs seasoning. Two QB's worked for Florida. No need to break up Guillen's confidence putting him out to the wolves. Play for this season. Guillen will be ready soon, very soon but as Pete Carroll puts it "Competion is Good."

Damien will look at film and see the areas they need to improve. #25 needs to step up. He's not moving with the play and is a second slow if not more. Many times in the game Manley had to ush him out of the way to get to the ball. Look at the film. No hate just help. #25 been looking to be great for 4 years and I think he has it in him but like all players adjustment are key. Just look at Rey M. from USC who had a reckless over pursuing style when he was a freshmen. EVERYONE NEEDS TO IMPROVE. Count the seconds on film before you move. Stop the film after one second and see where your feet are at...my quess is still stationary. Fix that and you're a stud! Really it's that simple and that glaring. Really.

The area of special teams needs to be addressed. Those kickoffs were very poor managed. Angels are bad, tackling was bad and the adjustments were non existant. Hernandez really needs to step up his efforts to the team. Ayala should have been his wake up call but it wasn't. Film brother film and more film and film and more film. Figure it out and stop putting so much pressure on the defense.

Look at it this way. IF Betance starts maybe Damien goes into halftime up by 7. IF Betance starts maybe Morrison's kid and Dominguez have a field day. Taylor was a tough assignment for anyone...and certainly one on one it's always a mismatch.

Amat won because they were better prepared, made better adjustments and were better on special teams. Plus they expected to win, and win BIG they did.

Damien could have won that game. I'll believe that until the day I die. But IF and MAYBE don't play football anymore. GETTING IT DONE and SCOREBOARD do. If I was a stud in waiting or thought I wanted to play against the best I'd go to Amat. Right now it's football heaven, soon it will be the gates of HELL for visiting teams again.

Maybe Damein will be Loyola East someday. I talked to a local coach at the game and I'll tell you EVERY COACH licks their chops thinking what they would do with Damien's SIZE, SPEED AND RECRUITING ABILITY.

Time to step to the plate. Last night was a great look into the future. One thing is for sure...THE DAMIEN AND BISHOP ANAT GAME SHOULD BE MANDATORY.

I was at your game doing a little scouting. First of all, Ontario's defense was no match for SD or a team to measure Joseph. They had no containment for the outside and that was a majority of your scores. Secondly, you should promote teamwork and not individuality. Bad move on your part.

But, being an ex-player at the next level, the style or level of difference is pretty clear for me.
D-End containment and it's a long night for Joseph, because his speed picks up around the 40 mark and is slow out of the gate.

Barbone is the force to be dealt with. His quickness in hitting the holes with your offense is remarkable. Meaning, the feet work ability and speed from 0-40 is very impressive and nobody caught him from behind last night. You have to have vision, be lateral and fast/quick running four yards off the line like this kid does. At the next level, holes fill very quickly and you better be quick and big.

See you soon. It’s going to be fun and challenging.

Observations,
What game was I watching??? Read today's Trib article on the game. Barbone, played great, but DJ went for 140 yards on less than 10 carries! The dude is at least two steps faster than Barbone. Heck, Barbone spent at least half of the 30 offensive plays on the sideline watching. On top of that, DJ was killer on defense. He leads the team in tackles. Barbone is great! No argument there! But DJ is a better running back. Some day the Trib and SD faithful will have to admit it!

JguruT,
Interesting question. I only really follow San Dimas High. Their Varsity, JV, and Frosh teams are all undefeated this year. I'm sure there are other teams with undefeated underclassmen, but SD seems to be doing a good job of player development.

Last night Damien played their hearts out. In the 6 years I've been with the school that was the best Damien has played against a superior opponent. The junior class is to be commended. They are a fantastic group of young tough men. Manley, Tre,Sainz and others showed why Damien will be back next year to do it all again. The Jv squad looked great and Damien's freshmen class is big, strong and very active so with hard work and consistent preparation damien should be sound for years to come.

The one thing that can be said about Damien's senior class is that they grew up last night. For the first time they made a decision to play like a team. Best man plays, support the man on the field and never lose faith in your coaches, Okafor, Jake, Haywood, Taylor, Salter, Reyes and Sale a team needs leaders. Leaders need to speak up. Not the rabble rousing shouting that means nothing but the communication of the game during the game and on the sidelines. It's a team game that needs leaders that do more than lead by example, which all of you do well. Look at NFL highlights...Strahan was the best, Ray Lewis is a monster motivator. To be the man you have to BE THE MAN, Hope that helps.

Coach Bubba you are without a doubt a stud coach. Amat put pressure and hit our boys up side the head and you kept them going. Very parent should thank you for your contributions to our boys.

One last thing. Body language. VERY IMPORTANT in a game. Coache slook at it when you come off the side lines. Body language VERY IMPORTANT. Players look at it on the field. 'AR ethey tired?", "Are they united?" "Have they given up...individually or as a team" "Is the offense confused or fustrated?". REMEMBER THAT IN A GAME EVERY EDGE IS BIG!!!. Don't give thenm any.

Here's a big shout out to Sainz and Manley. What a constrast in body language. Both great players. Manley stay in the game. As great as you play you give up too much information. Stay focused off the field and between plays. Show leadership and be our RAY LEWIS. Sainz...you are flat out a BAD A** BALLER! NOUGH SAID! Always an honor to see you play. Manley take notes.

Amat....what an honor. Great team, great fans, great coaching staff. The Blue and Gold are back. You made Damien a better team. You showed why you are easily the best team in the Valley. Best of luck along the way and thanks for hosting a great FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS.

PS. Damien Streakers while Amat showed class announcing your epic run...when you losing and din a tough battle it demeans the player effort to bring attention to yourself absent of the seriousness of the players effort against a tough opponenet. But the again...that's all anyone needs to know to illustarte the seriosness that damien puts into their football program. WHER THE HELL IS MIKE CURTIS WHEN YOU NEED HIM!!!!

Taste the medicine taste good dont it. Your team has lost three close games but you know what they still are losses. The men to the north of you are tearing it up because they fixed their problem...you may want to consider doing the same. Felipe will be back next year but he may not last much beyond that. Watch as some of your players will be opting for Amat next year, Amat, they have another good team coming back next year...again LA, transfers next year to Amat...shoes on the other foot again..like the medicine go on try some more...Still feel like scheduling Amat? What West Covina and Damien alike tried to do was keep Amat off the field and have long clock consuming drives. It works for the opening drive but it just seems like Amat get the ball and can score at will at times. Jerry McClanahan again was very poised back there. I was glad to see Lenhart get some time back there as well. Jay Anderson can fly and Gaise was on it again. That is a great one two punch for Amat plus they also have a line that is really moving people. Coaching staff a definite congratulations these men are coaching. The O-line coach I believe Gallager has half the team around him as he is giving instruction on the bench. Difiori was out on the field and was taking charge. Head coach Hagerty was calling a good game. Yes Amat is back and they are firing on all cylinders, hope they keep it up this is a exciting team. Lastly the Damien streakers were funny but the funniest thing was Amat announcer describing their run thru the field. Damien good luck the rest of the way and Amat keep it going and have a nice week off. Diamond Ranch is Next which will show the SGV if Amat can sweep the SGV teams they scheduled this year. I like our chances

one final thought. i am blown away at the amount of class shown by the teams in the sgv. amat and damien's crowds were exemplary and the players, coaches, and schools should be very proud of the product on the field and in the stands. good luck on the rest of the season to both teams.

sevenduece said:

amat put on an absolutely dominant performance tonight. damien did, however, have some success with some long drives as a result of converting on several third downs. overall though, amat was simply on a different level in every facet of the game. just a few thoughts about the personnel. gaisie is a very good football player. he's strong and has excellent vision. anderson's gonna be a special back. price is as athletic as advertised. he's not getting much work (teams don't really want to throw at him) but he plays well and even makes a few tackles. an earlier post talked about johnson. i saw herrera score on johnson and wondered how he'd respond when they matched up again. the kid took an interception for a touchdown. really good corner and he is physical. seals and maffie are studs. i don't know where these kids will go to college, but they get to the ball. pietro, what can i say? i think damien's qb will have nightmares about that kid. the o-line seems to get better with each week and it serves the team well. this team is extremely well coached! should be an interesting and good season for amat.

Regardless of what anyone hears or says tonight's game of C.O. vs. R.C. was as good as advertised and then some. Two teams fought like warriors and the game seemed to weigh in the balance the entire evening. I was so impressed with the skilled positions on both sides of the ball and long term this game will benefit both teams. The game's atmosphere felt like a playoff game and wish the game would of gone into overtime. Both teams would of gained so much from that experience but I now know why the guru says the I.E. is superior athletically. WOW! Too many penalties and one costly turnover stymied a few of C.O. drives or they win that game overall. Congrats to Bishop Amat too you should be ranked #1 after tonight's performance. I'm just wondering what happens after R.C. beats Los Osos. I've seen both teams and R.C. has more talent. Time will tell. Good night!

Bulldogs way to bounce back from last week, we didn't have our big fullback Jessie Ili tonight
so Ricky Johnson and his o-line stepped up and carried the team tonight, SGV Guru you said he needed a break out game, well he had one tonight with 183 yards, also great game by our young qb who
had some clutch passes & runs when we needed key first downs, we also had some clutch interceptions, one by our free safety who filled in for our starter
who was hurt from last week, his pick started the winning drive the other by Aron Marquez to save the game. Way to keep fighting
back all night Bulldogs, good luck next week vs Los Altos.

Great game by Bishop Amat tonight. Good job by Coach Hagerty to pull his first stringers out by mid third quarter. It's a long season and it would be a shame to have any of the starters injured. On the flip side it was also nice to see the future of the program get some game time experience. Some of the Lancers playing in the fourth quarter didn't even have "A"'s on their helmets giving JV players some varsity experience. Go Lancers.

Bud Furillo here,

Just got back from the Bishop Amat game and wanted to share a few interesting points from the "Steam Room."

Well, the first thing that comes to mind is the Amat defense. Outstanding play. Only thing I have to say here is, where are all those ney-sayers now ?

BTW, did you happen to notice the "payback" that conerback, Johnson had on Damien ?

They kept throwing the ball to his side of filed, and on one occasion, they actually scored a Touchdown !

But Johnson would have the last word here, with an interception returned for his own score.

The only negative thing that I could see, was that I believe that my good friend JCAZ said that Amat was not going to give up more than 14 points to any of the next three teams. Well, he was off by a few on this one I suppose...

We're young and still learning but I'll tell you this. DO NOT count the Conquerors out of the Miramonte league race. The way they looked tonight they can absolutely play with anyone.

Remember...Ayala played South Hills TIGHT, ended up losing by, I think, like 12 pts. And LA had a legitimate chance to beat them tonight. Overthrew a WIDE OPEN fade route with 1:30 left in the game. Our #11 catches that ball and LA is 1-2.

Plain and simple...LA is the best 0-3 team I have ever seen. Just ask Ayala's coaches if you doubt me.

Keep ur head up boys...we'll get one our way soon.

You're really wacked. First of all, Ontario did not contest anything we did tonight.

Secondly, ANYBODY can run around the end and up the field uncontested. Joesph is not the best running back for SD.

What game were you watching. Barbone took a rest the second half. Why use your best player against weak competition.

This was the worst team to play and compete against before the Smudge Pot.

Your point is taken but WRONG!

I don't think there's a better offensive unit in the SGV - bar none! However, the SD defense is a little weak at times. Daniel Joseph ran all over the place - he proved my point tonight - Nico Barbone was great, but DJ is a better running back! The Saints must have had 500 yards of total offense. Their O-Line is tremendous and their team speed was overwhelming! Great job coach Z - keep pounding the drum!

That may have been based on having a tougher overall schedule including wins over nationally ranked teams like Chatsworth, Christian Brothers(Tn), West Linn(Or) and even D5 league schools that were actually ranked higher than corresponding valley schools in the local SGV leagues.

When you are in a lower division you need to earn that by proving you can compete at a higher level.

The "Others" are listed alphabetically and include all others receiving any votes. That's why different divisions have a different number of "others"

I do also find it interesting that no one cast a vote for CO or SH. San Dimas may have earned some ones' vote because they have a returning running back that had over 200 yrds from scrimmage against a recognized, quality team like Oaks Christian.

No similar measuring stick for the Chargers or the Huskies. Again... who you play matters.

Long LIVE SPARTA !!!!!! said:

Sometimes a team that wants to be great gets a chance to live out their dreams and be remembered. Fresno State. Appalaichia State (sic) and Boise State come to mind. Last night it was Oregon State's turn to be the David to USC's Goliath. Tonight Damien has that chance. No team I have ever seen has wanted to be legit more than this team. The problem has always been that "legit prize" has always been an individualistic one, to a man, and the team concept suffers.

Tonight Damien will face a team that believes it is their birth right to be great. Not in an arrogant way but in a way that calls on each and every member of the Amat Family to work, sacrifice and rally around that greatness that earlier generations have earned and treasure. That's called communal confidence. Once again the scoreboard means nothing. Effort, determination, dedication and team sacrifice mean everything. Look what they did against a Orange Lutheran team that still hasn't recovered.

Damien is without question going to be tested tonight at every level. The coaches, the players and yes the fans. Will Damien fight back if they are down by 24 or will they crumble as a team. If they are up by 14 going into the 4th will they call it a day or like Oregaon State refuse to lose....that's a tough thing....looking at yourself before an epic battle and living with the truth after the final whistle blows.

We have two distinct philosophies at work here. One that measures themselves against their own lofty standards of excellence and other that waits for greatness to come knocking on their door and that player that takes them over the top. Ian Johnson comes to mind, so does Mendrun. It's in the work ethic, the dedication and yes the sacrifice for a common goal that WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS. TEAMS WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS not individuals.

UCLA plays for Pac 10 Championships while USC plays for National Championships. It's that distinct and glaring in it's application and execution when you atlk about the 2 private Catholic schools in the SGV. Remember we're talking football ONLY.

Damien doesn't ever believe, deep in their heart of hearts. that they will win or compete for a Championship, other than in their League. From day ONE no one on that team, from coaches, players and parents and certainly not the administration, believe they have what it takes to compte at that level. And in my opinion that's a disservice to the school, the parents and the players given the talent and resources available to Damien.

Spartans let tonight be that moment when everyone else's opinion doesn't matter. When each and every player realizes it's not about the blog, or the parents in the stands or anything else. IT"S ABOUT EACH AND EVERY PLAYER. A TEAM can do GREAT THINGS...individuals can only make great plays. It take 4 quarters to win. It takes the whole team to win. It takes singlemindedness to win against superior odds and talent. It takes commitment to a common goal. ONE PLAY AT A TIME!

Best of luck Spartans. The time for talk and rebuttal is over. The field is lined and the lights are on. Remember the score board has nothing to do with being a winner. Walk off the field a winner.
