There's no tying in football
What did you think of the Charter Oak and Rancho Cucamonga coaches agreeing before the game not to play overtime? This isn't a knock on them, several coaches throughout the Southland share the same opinions when it comes to overtime in non-league and league games. Personally, I don't get it. Why wouldn't you want to play the overtime? What's the risk, especially in non-league games. There's a good chance you may wind up in overtime in the playoffs, so if you have an opportunity to play a tiebreaker during the season, wouldn't that experience help. Wouldn't it be nice to know how your players react in that situation? Then there's the competitive side of it. Nobody wants to walk away with a tie. Not the players, not the fans, and deep down the coaches too. So, then, why do so many coaches agree not to play it out?

Coach Verti could have won the game (not tie) with the field goal (3) Pts thats why we went into OT - he elected like u said to go for the TD and I agree made a bad judgement even against the slime.........
My bad! WRONG ARTICLE??? should have placed in Coach of the year???
Wirthout a doubt Coach Sherf, His playing calling has been phenomenal! His coaching methods, is what AZUSA has been lacking for years.
A Good Coach always keeps the opposing team guessing, and so far he has done that.
Yeah, most people are saying look who they've played?
Well guess what! last year AZUSA lost to Montview High school, in a game AZUSA surely should have won!
This year AZUSA,is up 40 to 7, by half time!!!
Their first lost wasn't a blowout like everyone predicted, matter of fact AZUSA had a chance to take the lead in the fourth quarter! And Aquinas has a pretty good football team!
The season is still young, and League starts this week. They play the MONTVIEW LEAGUE CHAMPIONS Friday, who last year they also lost to. So will have to see what happens?
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK COACH! AND THANKS FOR PUTTING US ON THE MAP!!!
AZTEC PRIDE!
Amat fans better tread lightly. Yes they are 3-1 and should win the next two but the last few are no gimmies. This team could very easily wind up 6-4 or 7-3 and get a tough first round match up on the road. Should be interesting to see how it all un folds.
In regards to CO and Ranch I also hate ties. The only way I can see it hurting a team is if they lose in overtime and at the end of the season it comes down to record for an at large berth. A 7-2-1 make might look slightly better than 7-3 record The best thing the NHL did was chuck the ties and the CIF should too. Who wants to sit thru 2 to 2 1/2 hrs only to watch no winner? waste of time.
Dearest Fred,
Theres a thing called fatigue. When this sets in players are more frequent to get injured. So if you're playing a physical team in preseason (which doesn't matter) why go into overtime and endanger the team?
Ties Suck,
My son came home from practice this evening and said as soon as the head coach from Rancho Cucamonga decided he did not want to play overtime Coach Farrar was never really given a choice in the matter because either both coaches have to agree to play overtime or if one coach does not want to play overtime that's how and why the decision was made Friday night. As far as Damien is concerned I imagine that was probably the same rationale and reasoning behind that outcome as well. So as far as I'm concerned I do believe Coach Farrar had no choice about overtime because once a head coach says no there's no decision for anyone to make at that point because no overtime is already the decision made by one coach so therefore that prevails.
Ties Suck,
They do, but it only takes one coach to say no. It is in the CIF rules.
some coaches might elect not to do overtime and take a tie because a loss would factor in and ultimately hurt playoff seeding or playoff entrance entirely. i'm not sure this is true and would welcome the opportunity to learn of the playoff seeding and entrance rules.
I understand not playing it out in nonleague, but in league play the overtimes, especially when some league tiebreakers come down to coin flips at the end of the season.
You all make some good points about the injuries, see, that's why I'm not a coach.
CO Parent don't be so quick to believe what you kid says.
Lou agreed, because both hc's have too. ALso, Lou agreed to the same rule last season (because he has too)against Damien.
No one likes ties, but please don't put it out there that the CO coach had no choice.
Fred, a example why coaches should be careful in playing OT. Last year Amat St. Paul went triple OT. There was a questionable call when then coach Verti had a chip shot of a field goal in regulation and went for the win on the ground (emotion vs St. Paul got the best of him) the run got Stopped. We then played not one OT but three OT's. We ended up winning the game yes the fans loved it and Kids claimed that victory theirs, but in the process I remember 3 kids got banged up in the OT..One was Marcus Wagner the other was Jessie Prieto and Brent Seal altho he scored the winning TD was hobbling afterwards. I had a chance to talk to one of the St. Paul coaches coming off the field that nite and Asked him what he thought of Verti's decision to not kick the field goal and he told me he and all his coaches said the same thing ..Is he Serious what is he trying to prove? and were surprised as well. This hurt us going into league. It has its pluses and minuses but if your at the start of the season Ok go for it maybe in one game, But anywhere close to your league games and I say no dont do it. We as Amat Hate St. Paul but this was a big mistake to let your Alumni (Verti) emotions get the best of you as a coach, where you use bad judgement...trust me Verti caught allot of flak at Chalk talk after that game.
Comments: It's always been my philosophy in rankings that once a team has solidified a position, it holds on to that rating as long as it keeps winning, so South Hills and Charter Oak remain at Nos. 1 and 2 following victories. Bishop Amat made a statement with big win over Orange Lutheran and is solid at No. 3. Bonita and San Dimas stay at Nos. 4 and 5 after winning. Eight of last week's top 10 won, with only Glendora, which dropped to No. 9, and South El Monte, which dropped out of the top 10, being the only losers. Rosemead showed it belonged with a big win over Covina and takes over No. 10.

I hate ties! Ties of any kind. Neck ties and tied football games alike! But one thing I hate worse is watching a top notch team (like Charter Oak or Rancho Cuc) fail to field their best possible team due to injury.
Let's face it, pre-league games are really important for very few reasons. First, it gives coaches a chance to measure up their team - to determine strengths and work on weaknesses. Second, they (pre-league games) are good to help players get their game together. Third, such games are good for the followers of prep football to calibrate teams and leagues to determine who are the studs and who are the goats! Finally, pre-league games are frequently good for injuring star players. Several years back, when my son was still playing, he suffered just such an injury and missed three subsequent games. Two of the games he missed were league games.
Coaches who choose to not play OT in pre-league games are making a good choice. The teams get their reps in while coaches protect their talent from unnecessary injury.
I hate ties... but...
why take the chance of a player getting hurt when the game doesnt even matter. playoffs matter so thats why there is overtime
Please confirm with Coach Farrar about who made the decision about not playing for the win in overtime because my son came home Saturday afternoon and said Coach Farrar was informed when he got off the bus by the officials that Rancho Cucamonga's head coach had already made the decision for him and felt like this early in the season risking injury and Rancho Cucamonga having nothing to gain everything to lose in that situation versus a smaller school and was already the favorite and expected to win felt very strongly about not playing overtime. My son said Coach Farrar being "old school" wanted to play overtime for a number of reasons including the life experience and wisdom that comes from that situation that later pays dividends in league and the playoffs if the situation ever arises again. Bottom line Charter Oak clearly had the momentum and if you ask Coach Farrar about the officiating and the man responsible for running the clock on the scoreboard Friday night us parents felt like we were "homered" by I.E. officials and Rancho Cucamonga being the home team. No excuses though we still had opportunities to wins and some very untimely big plays, penalties, and turnovers also proved costly.
The advantage having played in one or more tie-breakers in preseason is cloudy at best. Most teams don't even have a complete level of comfort with the playbook yet and what you see run on Friday nights in September may be a lot different than what you see in November. Same with the players although to a lesser extent; coaches are still tinkering with lineups at this stage of the season.
If you are Lou Farrar and are playing for, A) a Miramonte League title, and B) a run for the Southeast Division Championship, playing overtime in week 3 doesn't mean much. Playing OT does increase greatly a team's chances of losing a key player due to injury due to the fatigue factor, especially this early in the season.
Teams with a legit crack at a post season State Bowl game might want the extra downs particularly when playing a highly ranked opponent.
PLAY TO THE END. OVERTIME YEAH!
