Tribskin Pick'em, your predictions and ours
![]()
Steve Ramirez and I will go head-to-head throughout the season, and I will update our records each Monday on the Tribskin Pick'em thread.
Robledo: Last week - 16-6; Season - 61-21
Ramirez: Last week - 14-8; Season - 58-24
Notes: The lead over Stevie R., extends to three after a tough week of picking winners. The Charter Oak-Rancho Cucamonga tie was a push, but we both missed Rowland over Northview, Chino Hills over Diamond Ranch, Schurr over Wilson, and Walnut over Covina. That was the huge surprise, a week ago I was ready to proclaim the Valle Vista the most improved and competitive league, but with the emergence of Walnut (2-1) and Rowland (2-1), the San Antonio is the big surprise so far, with four of its top five with winning records. Steve got me picking Ayala over Los Altos, but I nailed him with the West Covina upset over Glendora, Ganesha over Bassett, and Montclair over Workman.
Tough calls: No Thursday or Saturday night games and a light schedule with several teams off this week. The big games obviously are South Hills and Northview renewing their rivalry at the District, and Charter Oak and Damien. Well, maybe it looks that way on paper, but I'm taking SHills and COak in easy wins. West Covina-Los Altos is also intriguing, simply because the Conq's are the unluckiest team in the Valley, and has virtually no chance of stopping the Dawgs' running attack. I also want to keep a steady eye on Walnut playing at Arroyo and Covina at Rowland - who I both expect to win. South El Monte-Ayala? What's the over under on that, 80? Lastly, how will Azusa bounce back after a loss, and what better way to open the Montview that with defending league champion La Puente. BTW, Steve and I agreed on everything except I took Pomona while he took Gabrielino.

Baller72:
Come on? You are funny. To say Azusa is for real in the IBM league is stupid. No one cares about that league and all those teams, 9-1 or 10-0 always lose when they play a team that has a clue. Example: playoffs. Schedule Nogales 1st then beat them and then you can stand on something.
No nerve at all.
As a matter of fact, we're very proud of the fact that we have had plenty of standouts through the years that chose to attend Amat over their local Montview League school.
However, to put on your blinders and think that Azusa kids that could play baseball in the day didn't somehow end up at Gladstone (I know some) or that Workman doesn't get a ton of LP kids is ridiculous.
As a matter of fact, here's a fun one for you. Of ALL the claims out there that happen, try this one on for size. Go to this URL
http://cifss.org/adm/t_approval.php
and type in the name "Guerrero"
You'll find a standout Workman transfer eligibility *Denied* on 09/18/2008 because of
*Undue Influence*
THAT'S recruiting!
Joe Amat, local schools, local kids. I'm looking at supposed powerhouse schools who need to recruit from throughout the valley and beyond to build a team. Hit a nerve did I? The TRUTH hurts.
baller72,
if you don't think that Workman/La Puente, Azusa/Gladstone, Sierra Vista/ Baldwin Park, or Duarte/Monrovia have always had battles over players in several sports... you haven't been paying attention. Go ask.
Speaking of the montview league, it's nice to watch a league where grit and determination are what its about. Not stealing players from other areas, then crowing about how great you are. Ring a bell...Amat,CO, et al ?
Hey g changeboy
What planet are you from? ineptune? In case you haven't heard Azusa is the real deal in the Montview League. Picking against them is like picking you nose just warm and gooey, but noy worth a whole lot. While you are contemplating your boogers, the Aztes will be rolling.
Azusa by 15.
Just Wondering
Get into MaxP and take a look. Pretty obvious who's performing better with less around him.
3 games for Jose vs 4 games for Terry. Then take a look at all purpose yards..
Garay is just better all around.
NOT SO,
Interesting argument. I agree that individually Garay might be as good or better. But Garay has exactly one receiver that's worth a hoot. Bonita has a QB that is as good as Garay and he has a number of fine receivers - including guys out of the back field. So no arguement here, Garay is a good QB, but Peredes, given the players around him, is better. SEM plays good football, but they are lacking in a few key spots this year - namely their defensive line. They are about two or three players from being really special!
Just Wondering
Paradez is good but Jose Garey from SEM is better QB. The kid can run alot better than Paradez which is an added problem for defenses.
SaintsR4Real,
A couple of things to consider. First, Paredes is the best QB the Saints have faced this year. As such, the Bonita offensive unit is likely the best offensive unit the Saints have faced this season. The problem for the Bear Cats... The Saints have the best offensive unit in the SGV. Their are teams with better individual players to be sure. But as a unit, I don't think any team has as powerful an offense as the Saints. Their offensive line is really good and their back field is just as good. They will be the biggest challenge the Bear Cats face all year! So, provided the Saints' defensive unit shows up a little... the Saints should win this on going away... my prediction...
Saints... 42
Bear Cats... 21
No matter who pulls off the victory, the Smudge Pot is always a ton of fun and both teams should be proud to represent their school in this big game!
10...yes! 10 more days till "SMUDGEPOT"
Early Prediction:
San Dimas 38 Bonita 21
GO SAINTS!!
pomona 42-gabrelino 6..pomona wins this one big.
my picks...
duarte+30
rowland+21
Damian+3
El Monte+1
LaPuente+6(upset of the week)
thanks again for all the bulletin board material just wondering. so far you have been wrong 66% of the time but we like it and it keeps the team motivated. You really are a gem.
Last Week: (18-4) G- HIGH GIANTS boys, 2 wins. Also, sleeper team of the year, Pomona. That's right Fred, they will be 5-1 going into San Dimas. Red Devils will make the playoffs. Get on the story Fred. Get out of bed and cross the 57 freeway and get over there and get a story.
Coach of the year should go to the Ganesha coach.
Everyone lost on West Covina. Good for the Bulldogs.
I told everyone to beware of Rowland. Big win for Diamond bar over a week OC team (Brea) Wilso... how do you lose that game?
Big wins were:
Chino Hills over Diamond Ranch, Montclair over Workman, and G High over Basset.
This weeks picks boys:
Troy
Walnut
Duarty
Charter Oak
Montclair
South Hills
BP over El Monte
Rosemead over Temple City (game of the Week)
Ayala over S. El Monte (another good game)
Azusa barely over La Puente (battle of the best Boca Del Rio, Azusa or La Puente?) Fred you need to try this place. Great burritos
Rowland keeps rowling
Glendora
Pomona
Wilson
My week three miscalls were C O, Chino Hills, Walnut, Rowland, and West Covina for a 17-5 week. That brings the year to date total to 64-20.
SHHS vs. Northview: Last time Vikings got beaten this badly? Vs Saxons in 1066; Huskies, +28
Charter Oak at Damien: Damien catches C O with something to prove ; Chargers, +17
El Monte at Baldwin Park: Braves strictly on home field advantage; BPHS, +7
West Covina at Los Altos: Wilson not the only ones grumbling in HH; Bulldogs, +14
Rosemead at Temple City: Panthers prefer shorter road trips; RHS, +14
Covina at Rowland: The Lidle Tourney starts 11/28, pass it on to Northview; Raiders, +21
South El Monte at Ayala: SEM needs more D to play at this level; Ayala, +14
Azusa vs. La Puente: 4 straight 0-4 Montview bleeders; Aztecs, +28
Duarte at Sierra Vista: Dog of the week (Tie); Duarte, +1.331
Workman vs. Bassett: Dog of the week (Tie); Workman, +1.333
West Ranch vs. Glendora: A mighty ambitious preseason Coach P, mighty: Tarts, +10
Montclair at Nogales: Mt Baldy League 4 – Nogales 0; Montclair, +14
Troy at Diamond Bar: Brahmas entertaining visitors from OC again; DBHS, +14
Walnut at Arroyo: All that “Stangs” talk has Walnut worked up too; WHS, +21
Wilson at Montebello: Ask the lady with the nacho stained apron; Cats, +7
Pomona at Gabrielino: Why is PHS “in” and Garey and Ganesha “out”? Devils, +17
Semi Interesting note: For those who don't think the Smudge Pot Game matters, you may want to note both San Dimas and Bonita have taken a week off here. A coincidence? Yeah probably. ;)
Well at least the Amat domination of this Blog will cool down now that they have a bye. Thank God!. Good team ,deserve the No.1 Ranking but we do have other teams playing just as well in the SGV.
Some great games this week despite a good many teams on bye week. Here's my picks:
South Hills vs. Northview - SH+21. I don't think either of these teams are as strong as most folks thought they would be. QB play for SH has been good, but not great - as was anticipated. Northview's line play has been really poor - it will prove to be their downfall this season.
Charter Oak vs. Damian - CO+17. Charter Oak needs to come into this game prepared. After kissing their sister last week, they need to be cautious not to get lazy. Damian is no Rancho Cuc, but they won't just lay down either!
El Monte vs. Baldwin Park - BP+10. Baldwin Park lost a gagle of lineman to graduation. Line play is critical in all football, but it's especially important at the high school level. Baldwin Park could loose this game but they will likely win.
West Covina vs. Los Altos - LA+3. I'm calling for something of an upset here. On paper WC should be able to beat the rebuilding Conqs, but LA is better than they've played. This one could go either way, but I think LA will show up big as the underdog!
Rosemead vs. Temple City - Rosemead+21. This should be a cake walk for Rosemead. They will have to beat themselves, because Temple City can not and will not!
Covina vs. Rowland - Rowland +17. Covina is having a tough time and is currently holding the cellar in the Valle Vista - not the strongest league in the southland. Look for some Rowland reserves to get some reps in this one.
South El Monte vs. Ayala - Ayala +10. SEM is a little disappointing this season so far. They have a great QB and an equally great WR - they just aren't getting the all important line play they need to be effective.
Azusa vs. La Puente - Azusa +12. I love what's happening at Azusa. They're coming off a tuff loss to Aquinas and they're starting QB is a little banged up. Despite this, they should be able to handle a fairly weak LP team.
Duarte vs. Sierra Vista - Duarte +17. Duarte is a good team that hasn't suffered a tremendous number of injuries. They are staying healthy and getting good defensive backfield play this season. They should win this one going away.
Workman vs. Bassett - Workman +10. Neither of these teams of powerhouses this year, but Workman is hitting on a few more cylinders then Bassett.
West Ranch vs. Glendora - Glendora +21. The Tartans once again are fielding a fine team. They enjoy great coaching and their offense is very powerful. Glendora wins here big.
Montclair vs. Nogales - Nogales +7. I watched the San Dimas / Montclair game two weeks ago, and Montclair looked really feeble. They're physically small and they are also few in number (no depth). I realize Nogales isn't much better, but I think they might be a little better - thus Nogales +7.
Troy vs. Diamond Bar - DB +17. Diamond Bar is holding its own this season. They don't have a strong program, but they play with a lot of heart and they get good coaching. Should be able to knock off a really weak Troy team.
Walnut vs. Arroyo - Walnut +10. Again, neither team really stands out on paper. Walnut has very good team speed and Arroyo has been a little suspect in run defense. This one could go either way.
Wilson vs. Montebello - Wilson +10. Wilson has struggled amidst rumors of internal turmoil. However, they seem to be showing some signs of life. Gilmore needs to get 20+ touches if Wilson hopes to be effective.
Pomona at Gabrielino - Gabrielino +10. This will be the best game to watch this week. Two middle of the road programs within their respective leagues. Both teams play with great heart. Just a few too many tools on Gabrielino's offense for Pomona to cope.
Have fun and stay safe!
Chargers should handle Damien with ease. Will be hard to find another preseason game as tough ang physical as Ranho C. Just ask the CO linemen. Dumb penalties and poor officals led to the stalemate . Damien QB best come with his best game should see 4/5 sax. Everybody stand by Chargers got something to prove
When Damien gets blown-out Friday night vs Charter Oak, will all these local pundits still see fit to keep them in the Top 10?
If this continues, the participants in the blog will loose whatever credibility that might still exist. Regardless of who the "Big D" plays, if they don't win, they don't deserve it.
If it's any other way, we are living in "bizarro" world. I prefer reality.
