UCLA postgame thread ... 27-24 Bruins!

Stopped by Barney's Beanery in Old Town last night and saw a sea of orange all over the place. Those Tennessee folk sure travel well, too bad it's going to be a long ride home after the Bruins whooop on 'em tonight.
Afterward: Incredible. I was at the game and left after UCLA took the 24-21 lead, it was over, right? Had to catch the bus back to Parson's and couldn't believe Tennessee tied it. My pops gave me the play-by-play on the bus ride home, when they won it, the bus erupted. I was reading the thread during the game, kind of funny to see some of you eat your words afterward.

From Mt. SAC to UCLA starter, Kevin Craft set to go

Wheres Mr Turd From Glendora?

fc and reality donk suck donkey dick

LUCKY,

No "can of worms" just some friendly banter. I remember seeing Paterno on an ESPN press conference a long time ago and he said something about blocking a punt a couple games in a row after going seasons without blocking one.

It made me think that even if they didn't block one - and certainly didn't expect to *score* of it - he probably didn't stop practicing *trying* to block one, because the simple effort goal puts pressure on the punter and other good things can happen. Plus - you might get one someday.

LIncoln said, ""I will prepare and some day my chance will come."

If they hadn't *prepared* there would be no chance. Or maybe only if they got "lucky" !:?)

Wow... Seneca, Lincoln, Rickey, and Paterno all quoted in the same blog topic.

Joe Amat......
Since I enjoy your postings here in the blog I did not mean to open a can of worms with my quoting of Coach Paterno.
I was at an Insurance brokers conference where he was a keynote speaker.
During his talk he mentioned how on opposing teams punts he used allot of body language on the sidelines as his rush-men went after the snap to the opposing teams punter.
He stated in as much of context that I recall:
"Blocking a punt is the objective, Scoring off the blocked when it happens is icing on the cake."
He then went on to say “that when that happens your feeling pretty lucky” all the while shrugging his shoulders in a cocky matter totally out of his character.
It was a funny moment and maybe I didn’t do my best to tell that story because I just read the blog rather than post a majority of the time. Who needs the grief of some immature big mouths calling you names which happened to me in this case.

I forgot to say that if BYU wins this week and next week, they'll be 2-0 in Pac-10 play. . . . :D

Strong defensive and special teams performances kept them in the game, and offensive adjustments after the half gave them the win. That was a great game.

A week from Saturday: UCLA at BYU. BYU should give the defense a real test. UCLA did well last year and forced a lot of turnovers in the game in the Rose Bowl, but I think this year's edition of BYU is a lot tougher than last year's.

if you're looking for more manual labor, I hear donkey boy is looking for work.

Nah I pay my gardener for that manual labor stuff. Irritating guys like you is so much more fun and entertaining

if you are retired go pull weeds or something but just go

Come on I just like toying with Mr. Turd or whatever clever alias he uses. He has so many you know.
Love seeing him get all bunched up and trip over trivial stuff.
Watching him get so furious that he mispells, blames MTC for everything,(reminds me of a Bush hater) starts YELLING, winking is hilarious.
He always takes the bait and runs with it. He's my puppet, pick up the strings and there he goes all right my finger tips. I know it's off topic half the time but heck when your so into someones head I mean really. Got to have a little fun in my spare time (retirement ya know)
So please dont make me go.

no go away. dont come back

I thought the same... welcome back - and visit often!

is that FC?

Mr Turd,

Forgot to ask, But what is all the "wink wink" stuff about? you do realize you do a lot of that dont you

Just curious!

No wonder the Tribune passed him over

UCLA #74, No we know, sorry cach paterno are YOU the same guy???

Don't bother waiting to see Papa Joe and asking a stupid question. Yes YOU will look stupid ASKING that question.

Let's see..."Coach (I have no life LOOK ON YOUR FACE) I wanted to REFUTE something a numb skull told me on this high school blog I frequent and well...I used an arbitary qoute I read about your opinion REGARDING "LUCK" AND "BLOCKED PUNTS" AND WELL YOU SEE COACH...I can call you Coach can't I ? Seeing as we're BOTH coaches (at this point you've gotten the attention of Papa Joe's Security Team)....maybe you made the statement after a game,,,,and I ... Coach? hhhhummm Coach....Sir?....No seriously...coach I want to REFUTE a blog entry COACH.....but COACH IT'S IMPORTANT????" (to me.....)

That quote came after a game. Do some research and maybe Papa Joe was talking about a particular game. Yes more research. With particular events and he addressed the "MEDIA" with a GOLLY GEE I GOT LUCKY ON THAT ONE!!!!! speech. (wink wink)

Lucky is when the ball hits Canseco on the head and goes over the wall for a HIMERUN!!!!! That's LUCK! Luck is when that dog beat me over the fence ...sorry for the high school humor but seeing as this is a hgh school blog...well when in Rome....sorry guys...I went there...bad boy!

Or when you say something that actually has merit ....NOW THAT'S FREAKIN LUCKY!!!!! (OTHERS WOULD SAY IMPOSSIBLE!!!) I think the jury's out on that one.

As far as talking about Craft and a meaningless preseason game 30 years from now, think again. Preseason game USC and Alabama? National Championship implications....or closer to home the make up preseason game between UCLA and Miami do over...UCLA has NEVER been the same.

It's early....maybe Craft lays a egg he rest of the season but seriously wasn't that a hell of a game? Even if Craft's dad put in a good word for his son..sometimes those calls never come ...ask Leinart. Draft Day Chow/Titans went with Vince Young....so no one pulled the wool over anyone's eyes at UCLA concerning Craft. Now let's talk about you.

U¢LA....U$C...you get what you pay for! It's a joke! Relax. I KNOW about USC envy but I've never heard of UCLA envy...why is that? Again it's a joke. Reminds me of my Mercedez Benz test drive. The salesman tells me ..."see that butoon? Push that and the car drives....JUST LIKE A BMW!" Funny but my BMW doesn't have a similar button...again why's that?

NO ONE KNOWS WHO YOU ARE (no pressure to make this ugly) SO DON'T CONTINUE THE BACK AND FORTH UNLESS ITS IN GOOD FUN.

FOOTBALL HEAVEN !

No one has disputed much of what you say,
Tennessee may have been overated.
Crompton was worse than Craft.
USC may still put a beatdown on the Bruins.
You could always say "if this happened..." or "but that happened..."

However,
-The Bruin defense may have had something to do with Cromptons performance.
-The Bruin coaches (Chow included) outcoached Fulmer and the rookie O-Coordinator. Coaching counts!
-Lucky and fortunate are different. You create your own fortune. Luck implies there was no skill involved. Obviously that's untrue. even you could see that.
-On the grand scale this game did wonders to restore an image to a national audience and gave Neuheisel a platform for a week to talk about his program in numerous interviews.
-if "ifs and buts" were beer and peanuts we'd have the start to a great party

You people are all retarded. UCLA was lucky to get that win. They have a below average QB who got hot in the second half ( thanks to the adjustment's Chow made) to beat an over ranked TN team. TN'S QB was worse than Craft at 19-41. Any kind of decent play from Crompton and the Volunteers kick the crap out the Bruins. Wait till UCLA plays USC and the Trojans put a massive beat down on them. Then this meaningless preseason game won't mean squat.

I couldn't drink back then... but I'd eavesdrop !:?)

Right you are.

Again.

"Luck is the residue of design."

Branch Rickey

Seneca. In the 1st Century. But I heard he used to break bread and drink wine with Branch Rickey... and Joe Paterno!

Hey Joe,

Wasn't that famous Roman philosopher named Branch Rickey?

Don

How does "icing on the cake" translate into "lucky"? I don't think you would spend time in practice trying to be "lucky".

By your logic, good pass coverage and intercepting a pass is the objective - scoring off it is LUCKY?

So Tennessee was LUCKY to have the lead at halftime?

Are we even?

And I would guess that a far greater percentage of blocked punts lead to scores (whether directly or indirectly) than do interceptions.

Steve,
My post was directed to your friend LUCKY MY FOON DEE OH! and not you.
Just wanted to make that clear.

An ancient Roman philosopher said, "Luck is when preparation meets opportunity."

I think he was a football fan.

Well next time I have a chance to see Coach Paterno as a keynote speaker I'll have to walk up to him and say that some numb skull in a prep blog say's he is completely wrong when mentioning scoring off a blocked punt being "icing on the cake"
After all some blowhard know it all in a high school blog would know better than Joe Pappa and the words he speaks.

It's not luck when you gameplan it. That's why "Beamerball" has been so effective. I would agree with you on the luck angle if the punter had dropped the ball or there was a bad snap that would have contributed to the block. But if you look at the play, UCLA was able to get three guys loose up the middle, they obviously saw something in the way they Tennessee lined up that they would be able to take advantage of. Neuheisel is very big on special teams and, like Beamer, spends more time in practice on special teams.
Luck, in this case, is by design.

Mr. Turd......

If you think thirty years from now this twenty six year season ticket holder and Bruin alumnus is going to be talking about Kevin Craft about a meaningless pre-season Monday night game instead of knocking off USC or talking about Craft in the same breath with Aikman, Sciarra, Neuhiesel, Ramsey, and Beban.

Then you deserve to go by the name TURD.

Hey "No We Know"...NO being your calling card.

YUP Craft is BUSTED! His DAD actually PLAYED the 2ND HALF!!!!

You're a MORON and a HATER.

30 years from now they'll still be talking about what he did on Monday night with a NATIONAL AUDIENCE.

You on the other hand will still be a TURD.

LUCKY I think you have it wrong. Joe Paterno has it right. "Blocking the punt IS the objective" but then EVERY play has an OBJECTIVE. 3rd and short...counter, off tackle, trap...they ALL have an OBJECTIVE.

To follow your assumption of the Joe Paterno quote "EVERY trap has an OBJECTIVE...SPRINGING it for a 99 yard TD, aal Tony Dorsett...is icing on the cake!"

No 'LUCK" was involved in the block. That's what film work is ALL about, that's what PRACTICE is all about, that's what REPETITIONS is all about, that's what PERSONNEL DECISIONS is all about.

GET a clue LUCKY and stop picking fights when there are none.

By the way Steve...totally enjoyed your vacation pieces. NOW THAT WAS COOL!

I dont know if anybody else heard ESPN radios interview last night of Norm Chow. Turns out Norm is good friends of Kevin Crafts Dad.
He had a connection.
No wonder the no name JC transfer of which none of the respectful college recruiting publications had barely known of is there.

Oh Steve.....

Obviously you never played the game.

"Blocking a punt is the objective, Scoring off the block when it happens is icing on the cake."
Joe Paterno

In other words LUCKY! I'll just leave it at that.

I was there in sec. 15, and LAC is right. It was about 85-percent full, which would put the "real" attendance in the the 80,000 range. And I know was sober, because I don't drink. I was also amazed seeing that shade of "true blue" all over the stadium. The stands looked like they do on NCAA 2008.

Yea that's real mature. I actually was pretty dam sober I like to enjoy my Bruin games not waste it away on beer. I've seen how ugly it can get. And unless you were at the game you'd know how many people were in fact in the Rose Bowl.

LAC
It only appeared to be 80000 because you were wasted. put down the brews pal.

I just love how UCLA's fans showed up to the game 80,000+ strong in Neuhisel's debut. 68,000 my A$$ the stadium was almost to capacity (believe me I was there!). Even after UCLA has had medicore seasons. If I remember correctly USC had something like 45,000 in Pete Carrol's debut, the Coliseum wasn't even half filled. USC-LA? How bout banwagon LA! Seriously if UCLA became a power I wouldn't be surprised to see Bruin Nation all over LA/SGV.

That's like saying the Vols were only ahead because of the INT return... or the 3rd and long facemask that kept their final TD drive alive.

Both teams had 60+ minutes to do whatever it takes.

Can't wait until there's two legit programs in LA fighting for national prominence again. I think it'll happen

How is winning by a blocked punt lucky?
Where all those wins that Va. Tech got by using "Beamerball" considered lucky? Or was it lucky when George Achica blocked Norm Johnson's 46-yard field goal attempt to give USC a 22-21 victory over UCLA in 1981?
The answer to both is, no. This was not Tony Romo dropping the snap on a sure game-winning field goal. Most blocked kicks/punts are due to game-planning and execution, which was the case on Monday.
Give some credit where it is due.

Not sure if someone else mentioned it here, but I noticed that Corey Harkey (Chino Hills) got some playing time for UCLA as a true freshman. I know that CH is borderline SGV, but being in the Sierra league it's still cool to see. What are other Sierra league seniors from last year doing at other schools/JC's? Anyone?

that tennessee team was way overrated and that other blogger was right without that blocked punt for a TD ucla loses. Bruins were lucky

A win is a win and us longtime suffering Bruin fans will take it any way it comes.

Wow, what's the deal! The Bruins beat a much better team in TN and some of you bloggers won't let it go! It's not enough that Craft completely overachieved. For at least one night, Craft, his defense, and the rest of the Bruins out smarted and out played a very good TN team. Will they do any more great things this season? Too soon to tell. But the players won the game, not the chess match between the ears of a coach. Chow and Company are really great, but as a unit they are just as unproved as Craft, etal. As a unit, the UCLA coaching staff has exactly one win under their belt. Don't write them off yet. Give them a chance to see if they can keep in going. I love that UCLA tries to recruit local talent. I'm not a giant UCLA fan, but I hope Craft keeps closing the mouths of bloggers who thought TN would hand him his behind. The game last night was great fun to watch. And if you're a UCLA fan or not, you must admit games like that are good for college football!

Just Wondering seems to forget that UCLA's defense had to score for them to even be in that game.
If Crafts your future I'll bring a fork because your done.

The dude goes 18 for 25 in the second half because Norm Chow calls good plays??? That's BS. Chow is the best play caller in the NCAA... no argument here. But like him or not, believe in his future or not, Craft did a good job in the second half of the game. Does he have sticking power? Will he boost UCLAs faltering program. Only time will tell. But 24 hours ago he didn't have a snowballs chance at beating TN. Classic Norm - I'm right and you're wrong. Saying Craft had nothing to do with it is silly and it minimizes the hard work of a young man who really helped his underdog team win. Norm Chow makes Craft a better QB. I don't think there's a QB on the planet that could make Chow a better OC. Having said that, what happened at the Bowl last evening had alot to do with a QB that got better as we watched. When he enrolled at Michigan, Tom Brady was #7 on their depth chart! Who knows what Craft's future holds. He showed great poise despite the fact he was a little out matched. I hope he becomes something special and working with Chow is his best chance.

UCLA pulled it out but they are on borrowed time. One game and they got up for it and their new coaches debut, but like I said Borrowed time, they were not impressive at all and looked to be weak in lots of areas. I give Credit they won the shocker game but they are in for a long season. USC-LA That's the real team of L.A.

go buckeyes

FJRs two favorite teams.
1)UCLA
2)whoever's playing USC?

In order to be fair, I'll have an Ohio State thread in two weeks ;)

Just Wondering if I read your post correctly "but with 1:40 left, Craft did his work, and he did great!" With that logic that meant Norm Chow for the rest of the 28:60 of the second half had to abandon the game plan made at the half and adjust to Craft who still wasnt checking down and finally with 1:40 left redeemed himself sort of with a broken coverage TD. We got damn lucky!
Hell Bethel-Thompson could have saved some face with coach Chow upstairs last year.
Classic Norm Chow damn right to think otherwise is just silly.
We need a quarterback and we need one now because we were just handed a gift.
As a 25 plus year season ticket holder I expect better especially coming from Rick with offensive personel.
I'm giving him two more years for the offense to catch up with a much over used defense and if nothing changes you can take my tickets and shove them.
Oh how I dread going into the office this morning with all the blowhard SC fans.

By the way Classic Norm,
Someone had to make the passes! Chow is remarkable, but with 1:40 left, Craft did his work, and he did great! So to say it had "nothing to do with Craft" is silly.

What a game. Even my wife was yelling at the TV! Chow is the man. Why on earth isn't he a head coach somewhere? Craft was shotting the first half but started playing within himself in the second half. He tried to do too much in the first half. The true test of Craft and Bruins will be if they can string together several wins. One home win against an excessively proud team (TN) is great, but they'll have to play a lot better agains Winconsin and the others. For now... Way to go Craft... way to go Bruins... you made Socal proud. Besides, it would be a disaster to loose to a team with such ungly uniforms as TN!

That win had nothing to do with Craft. That was classic Norm Chow covering a weak ass QB who had no clue. And a Tennessee team that thought they had it in the bag and just were going through the motions until it was too late.

ARW

USC is a great power house in football no doubt, and as a southern californian, I love to see them be successful as the next guy. In fact, UCLA can only "hope" to someday get "close" to what USC has done on the football field over the years, but realistically that my be a long time in coming to tell you the truth.

However, to somehow suggest that USC is going to up stage the Bruins in basketball is just plain crazy !

ARW, the next time you watch a USC UCLA basketball game at Pauly, let the camera do you a favor.

Just watch as the camera pan's around the rafters, and do me a real big favor ok. Count all those National championship banners that hang up there for me ok.

Now when USC get's "ONE" of those, "JUST ONE," then please let us all know about it ok. Then you can say you're piece.

Until then, please, please, lay off the crack for me ok cause, trust me, it's doing you a whole lot of harm.

With an AD/head coach/Chow - all knowing who and how to recruit...the Bruins will revitalize and strengthen the program not only this year but in the years to come.
congrats to the coaching staff and players...great game.

This is a USC town now and always will be ... just wait until Tim Floyd gets it going and the Trojans rule on the hardcourt, too!!! Fight On!!

OK, so the Bruins go 5-7 instead of 4-8. Wow ... Still, the only bowl they go to this season is the Toilet Bowl.

Say what you want but it was a great game and UCLA deserved that win. UCLA outplayed and outcoached Tenn. Craft looked like a bust in the 1st half and a star in the 2nd. Its the start of something special in Bruin Land. Huge underdogs coming out with the Win. Clutch! Good thing I decided to go to this game too! UCLA baby.

That's the beauty of the blog. A certified MORON can come on here

yes clutch and you are a moron

won in spite of craft????

are you an idiot or just "playing one on TV"???

That's the beauty of the blog. A certified MORON can come on here and make a comment like that!

Dude do you even UNDERSTAND Craft came to UCLA only as a practice player really. The fight for the starting job didn't involve him Craft was just suppose to be a practice dummie, so to speak. NO offense to Craft's skill but REALLY he wasn't in the mix like say Mustain at USC.

Congrats to Craft. What happened to all the naysayers.
QBing a BIG TIME GAME as your first assignment and coming back after that TERRIBLE 1st half is something NO ONE, especially the Bruin faithful, will soon forget!

CLUTCH CLUTH CLUTCH!!!!!!!

A Win is A Win..

Its a team game and a team of coaches.

Great job Bruins, you beat a nationally ranked team..

The comp was alot better than USC opened up with...

Cut Craft some slack, guys. It was his first game, and I think you have to give him some credit for the second half, going 18 of 25 and leading UCLA on those two TD drives.
Personally, I want the guy to succeed. I interviewed him and he's nice kid, the kind you want to see succeed.
The thing I like about this UCLA team is that they have some former SGV players who are impact players for them - Craft (Mt. SAC), Brigham Harwell (Los Altos) and Aaron Perez (Charter Oak).
They are almost the SGV Bruins.

craft had 4 ints and still played bad inspite of the UCLA win. that was all norm chow not craft

JCAZ...HOW ABOUT A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO WHEN UCLA TOOK USC OUT!!!!!

AS USUAL JCAZ ...YOU'RE WRONG.

THANKS FOR THE LAUGHS !

To all you doubters and haters out there...

Eat your words!

Norm Chow is....A GOD !!!

Man, I have to say that this is the first time since Moses was in High school, that the UCLA Bruins have been able to play in a game such as this, and come out on top.

Way to go Bruins !!

And what a difference a new and talented coaching staff makes...hint hint...

Dan,

Like many of the other haters on this blog, they tend to disappear when the people and/or teams they hate on have success. It's an interesting concept.....

Where's all those Kevin Craft hater's?

ARW...yes you do!

Hey DUMBASSSSSSSSS !!!!!!!

Coaching Matters...at ANY level and in ANY sport!!!!

But don't worry ARW...I mean DUMBASS....at least you NOT alone....can you say.....PETE CARROLL....DUMBASS !!!!!

NORM CHOW HELPS BEAT TENNESSEE WITH UCLA'S 3RD STRING QB...IMAGINE THAT!

LIKE MY GOOD FRIEND JAMES WASHINGTON SAID..."THAT SECOND HALF HAD NORM CHOW ALL OVER IT!!!"

The 3 Amigos land in UCLA....WALKER/CHOW/ NEUSHIESEL

USC AND UCLA WILL BE A EPIC !!!!

AGAIN!!!!

WOW!!!
Harwell was great and Craft turned it around.
Go SGV!

Leaving the game! told you so!!!

I'm sorry Fred, I should of known and now I look like a dumbass.

OUCH!

You get the ball on the TN side of the field with time enough for a couple of plays, you have to try. Opportunities aren't going to get any better than that. "Worst case" should have been three and out, or a missed field goal. There's no excuse for throwing an INT in a situation like that. Throw the ball away!

Wow!....I can honestly say the first 3 ints were crafts fault. But when its tied 7-7 just take it and run the clock and regroup into halftime. That 4 pick was all play calling.

I'm puzzled by the coaches play calling

"This is not Mt San Antonio."

ESPN announcer Mike Patrick on Kevin Craft

OK -two INTs - now I'm worried!

..but it was a nice series *before* the INT.

craft INT on first series. its going to be a long year in bruin land

fred, you're the ultimate homer, you'd pick St. Lucys over the trojans I bet, no stones at all.. are you afraid to offend even 1 or the tribs 7 or 8 remaining subscribers!

UCLA could not beat Tennessee Tech with that offensive line, let alone Tennessee. Stop dreaming, Fred ... wake up and smell the coffee.

Like JFR said, it may not be to close, but as a Bruin alum also, I hope that the U-clans pull it out.

I wonder if the powder blue "go" UCLA banner is hanging on that building on wilshire today ?

Isn't this a high school blog? Just because this bruin team would be hard pressed to beat Mater Dei or LB Poly does not make them deserving of being here.

Fred,

As a long time suffering Bruin fan like yourself I am not quite as opomistic as you. I think staying within 2 TD'S is a victory. I feel sick for just saying that, I need a brew.
