Yet to find its rhythm
2. Walnut (6-1)
'Stangs off to quick start
3. St. Lucy's (6-1)
Showed poise vs. L.A.
4. Diamond Bar (7-1)
Won seven straight
5. Bishop Amat (1-2)
Played tough vs. South Hills
6. Glendora (2-0)
Took care of business
7. Los Altos (0-2)
Searching for chemistry
8. Charter Oak (6-0)

9. Bonita (0-2)
Went 3-2 at N. Torrance
10. San Dimas (3-1)
Only loss was to Ch. Oak
Rankings are based through matches ending Sept. 20

Comments: South Hills, which was the top team in the area last season, has looked strong, but has yet to find some consistency. The Huskies, just 3-2, have yet to play their way out of the top spot. Walnut, though, has closed the gap after an impressive win over St. Lucy's and a runner-up finish at the Ganesha Tournament. St. Lucy's showed solid poise to pull out a 3-2 win over Los Altos and lost in four to Walnut. Diamond Bar rounds out the top five and has looked impressive since opening with a loss to Los Osos. Charter Oak enters the the top 10, getting an impressive win over San Dimas.

The match between Upland and St.Lucy's went to Upland in 3 games with Upland victorious. St.Lucy's is struggling to find any consistent play from their outside hitters and middles. Maybe some line-up changes will shake up the hitters and middles.

I would tend to disagree with the CIF rankings comment. Although most of the Tribune ranked teams are also CIF ranked, I would give more credibility to the local guys who watch these teams.

sgvolley said:

I think all of em are ranked in CIF, maybe not Los Altos and Amat.

a said:

If any of these area teams are ranked in the CIF polls, then they are good. Rankings on area-newspaper are nothing special.

sgvolley said:

Alright you guys convinced me. Maybe my rankings are off a bit. I will be interested to see how Fred ranks them this week. I agree league will sort out alot. Some good rivalries.

Bonita/Los Altos/Charter Oak
Walnut/S. Hills
St. Lucy's/Diamond Bar/Glendora

Just because team A beats team B who had previously beaten Team C doesn't necessariy equate to Team A being better than Team C. For you college football fans, Stanford beat Oregon St., Oregon St. beat USC, so is Stanford better than USC? Not even close!

There is a lot of parity this year and any team can have a down game. One loss/win doesn't decide anything. The true rankings will play out as the season progresses. For now, you have to look at experience and the overall balance of weapons. Bonita has a couple of solid players, however they also have a lot of holes. They are a strong team, but no way are they #1 in the valley. With the exception of their loss to Glendora, Walnut is still the #1 team, with South Hills, St. Lucy's, Glendora and Diamond Bar rounding out the top 5. I would put either Los Altos or Bonita at 6/7. Not sure about the rest of the top 10.

St. Lucy's will play Upland and South Hills this week. If they manage to sweep both of those teams, in my own biased opinion, they should be #1, but that is two tough matches away...

sgvolley said:

Fair question. Its like Bonita won 3 last week, san dimas, walnut, alta loma.

Glendora beats Walnut(ranked 2nd) Bonita beats Glendora. Bonita hasn't really played any other local ranked teams. I guess you could argue that Diamond Bar be ranked ahead of Bonita. Its hard to keep S. Hills at one with their losses but I think they are still the most talented team in the valley.

gusa said:

sgvolley
how do you figure bonita moving from 9 to 1/2?
thats a bit much after two wins.
i'd like to hear your argument.

sgvolley said:

South Hills hasn't really played anybody locally yet. They did beat Ayala. They play St. Lucy's and Los Altos upcomming. CIF is ranking them on strength of schedule I guess. I saw them this summer and they are legit but like all teams in this area, vulnerable.

GHigh Para Siempre said:

Charter Oak is now ranked 10th in III AA, St. Lucy's and South Hills are ranked below Walnut, Glendora, and Diamond Bar. Why does South Hills get so much attention in the area when obviously CIF doesn't think as highly of them? Never seen them South Hills play so hard to tell.

sgvolley said:

my opinion

1 & 2 Bonita/S.Hills-hard to have the number one team below or at .500 but I think these teams are.
3. Diamond Bar
4. Glendora
5. Walnut
6. St. Lucy's
7. Charter Oak
8. Los Altos
9. Bishop Amat
10. San Dimas

For the record I think this will look much different at the end of the year or as opposed to right now.

ABC those rankings are silly.
all the teams in the top six or so could easily be changed around, they all are about equal in ability when playing ot their full potential.
St. Lucy's loosing to rosary in 3, Walnut loosing to Glendora in 4, and Glendora loosing to Bonita in 4, just shows that any of these teams are beatable and the real rankings are going to be when everyone's leagues start.
Good luck to everyone in Sierra League, you got a tough round up this year.

volnut said:

Walnut beat St. Lucy's in their only head to head matchup. They cant be ranked ahead of Walnut. And Bonita beat Glendora so the same is true there. ABC your rankings make no sense. I agree Diamond Bar should move up because of their record. But have they beaten/or played any SG Valley ranked teams? Let's see how they do against Glendora, St. Lucy's and Ayala when league starts.

patrick said:

@ABC, How do you drop Diamond Bar down to #6.?? Im sure your answer is personal, but im interested. The only 2 losses were to Los Osos who is ranked in Div 2, and who is very solid. To that extent, better than South hills. So Walnut losses and moves up?? I dont get your logic. Like i say sounds personal to me.

ABC said:

1.South HIlls
2.Glendora
3.Bonita
4.St. Lucys
5.WAlnut
6.Diamond Bar

A said:

Where was the coaching when st lucys played rosary?

rosary's head coach made adjustments instead of just making subs maybe thats why he got 4 cif titles under his belt

0-3 lost to rosary is a bummer...better luck next week vs. upland and south hills

Bonita and glendora should move into the top 3 in ranking with south hills

bonitabearcats said:

bonita is the real deal

alta loma : sweep
san dimas : sweep
glendora : in four

GO BEARCATS!

sgvolley said:

as predicted, everybody is beating everybody. South Hills loses, Walnut loses, St. Lucy's loses and now Glendora loses. Lots of parity. Most of these top teams can beat eachother on any given day. Obviously Bonita is a top team and I would throw Diamond Bar and Los Altos in that mix as well. The jury is still out on Charter Oak and Amat.
Strongest top 10 in years.

GHigh Para Siempre said:

South Hills lost to Upland in 4 this week.

GHigh Para Siempre said:

Ganesha beat Chaffey and Kaiser without too much trouble.
The real story is Bonita beating Glendora (undefeated previously) in 4. Sounds like Bonita is starting to click. San Dimas plays West Covina tonight-should be a good rematch.

sgvolley said:

any other results from this weeks games?

Keke said:

Rosary beat St. Lucy's in 3.

tootney said:

Rosary defeated St.Lucy's last night in 3 games with only the last game being close. St.Lucy's is missing outside hitter L.Frazier and it's noticeable. The blocking and back row defense in the first two games were not up to standard, the hitting in the first two games was not very good. Altogether the loss was a team loss and the girls should probably rebound vs South Hills as has been their pattern.

lets see the rankings now

Go Regents said:

St. Lucy's lost in three to Rosary. They just didn't have it tonight. Rosary is a solid team with great hitters and a solid defense. Only weakness I saw was lack of blocking up front, but their defense was able to cover.

GHigh Para Siempre said:

Too bad. . .I thought San Dimas could win the smudge pot in two fall sports. Bonita must be a solid team. Coach Contreras has enough experience to handle the task.

GHigh Para Siempre said:

What happened in the SD Bonita game? Any word?

GHigh Para Siempre said:

I thought the picture was great news reporting when it happened. But a year later just before a high school rematch seems a little irresponsible and ridiculous, but still hilarious. I guess it's not so bad since noone got seriously hurt (that I know of). I just hope the students and parents have more sense this year. I can't help but wonder what the press would have been like if it was a Ganesha vs. Pomona match.

Justrab said:

Fred,

I don't mean this in anyway that I support violence, but that picture is too much. You have to look at everyone's expression. I really hope no one was hurt, particularly any kids.

FredJ said:

I put that picture up, not Stevie R. We don't promote violence, we report it, and unfortunately this happened at a San Dimas-Bonita volleyball match last season. This is just a reminder that it's just a game, let's celebrate the volleyball and leave the fighting for little kids who don't know any better.

Go Regents said:

Easily the best teams in the valley and Inland right now. With the proliferation of year-round volleyball, it will only get stronger and more competitive. We need to see a CIF champion in the upper levels.

Go Regents said:

Steve, I agree. I understand your point, but it comes across as promoting violence. Lets see something more positive up there!

GHigh Para Siempre said:

I believe that was Rosary's JV team in the Summer League. I think the picture of the San Dimas-Bonita fight should be taken down. This is volleyball for Pete's sake!

Mikasa Mom said:

Rosary lost to Notre Dame this summer in Bonita's summer league quarterfinals.
St. Lucy's JV team was playing in Bonita's varsity summer league and beat Notre Dame in 3 in the semis and went on to win the finals against Etiwanda. SL Varsity can do this! Looking forward to a good match.

prognosticator said:

Ghigh-I think I will take Rosary in that match. I hope you are right and St. Lucy's wins, but Rosary has beaten a ton of good teams over the summer and early this year.

sgvolley said:

Well put. I think this may be the strongest the SGV has been in volleyball in sometime. I see a lot of parity too. Im not sure I see any of them running the table.

Fan said:

I think everyone needs to settle down...

I think it is a discredit to say that St. Lucy's should be shamed in some way that they lost to Walnut. They (Walnut) are an incredible team who went five with Saugus (Div 1 and ranked in CIF)and just beat San Gabriel (Div 1 also ranked CIF.)The South Hills (match is next week) could go either way. South Hills has incredible talent and it looks to be a great match to watch. (Don't forget they were favored to win last year too...) To the Los Altos doubters, this is a great team and will surprise the teams that are coming in thinking they can win because this team has had a couple of losses. I think the same about Bonita. An extremely talented team who should go far. I don't think anyone is declaring Olympic status just yet. I think everyone is proud of their kids/teams. I think there is a lot of great volleyball out there. From the heavy talents (Walnut/South Hills) and the Cinderella Stories (Ganesha/Charter Oak). Many great stories to be heard and told.

sgvolley said:

It looks like South Hills beat Ayala in 4 close ones.

GHigh Para Siempre said:

Thanks for the compliments GoRegents. Education comes first in the Ganesha program, which makes for quality volleyball players with lots of heart.
In my opinion St. Lucy's will beat Rosary in 3-CIF has them ranked too high. The matches at Upland and South Hills should be great. Haven't seen either team, but it's great for the area to have top local teams facing off.

Go Regents said:

Ghigh,

Watching your team at the tournament, I was impressed with their heart and determination, especially with the lack of resources the team is faced with. Looks like the coach is doing an excellent job bringing the program along. Good luck to you guys in league.

Go Regents! said:

Patrick,

Go back to my post and read it very carefully. I think I clearly stated that St. Lucy's LOST to Walnut, albeit a VERY close match, and had to go 5 games to beat L.A. That doesn't spell unbeatable to me, nor olympic caliber. They do have a very good team and will give any team in the valley a run for their money. We will see exactly how good they are over the next week and a half with Rosary, Upland and South Hills coming up. You need to settle down and not be such an a##.

vballfn,

waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Quite your crying!!! Don't be so smug as to think that every other powerhouse public school in the valley that isn't in a ghetto doesn't have inner-district transfers. Give me a break!

volnut said:

Walnut beat San Gabriel, ranked 2nd in CIF division IIIAA, today in 4 games.

vballfn said:

st.lucy faithful.. you need to let the walnut loss go. Its sad you cant beat a bunch of kids that go to school in there hometown. And the Regents will not get a win against south hills, another quality hometown school.

GHigh Para Siempre said:

Gabrielino and Ganesha may not elite teams, but they are both good enough to compete against St. Lucy's. What's amazing about St. Lucy's is their depth-while I believe a healthy Ganesha team would have done a better job, I sincerely doubt we could take St. Lucy's without a lot of luck. Depth can also bring chaos, which is why Walnut was able to beat them with their solid defense. Charter Oak is very similar to Walnut in their cohesiveness and Senior leadership.
League is here for some and a week or two away for others. Best time of the year for local VB fans.

vbl said:

those were in addition to beating LA(also ranked in CIF)

vbl said:

There should have been some good games played tonight. Please post results if you have them.

I believe St. Lucy's beat Gabrielino and Ganesha easily both ranked in CIF but not what I would categorize as elite teams. I am not a St. Lucy's poster or fan just stating facts.

patrick said:

Here we go again with the horn tooting from St.Lucys!! All of a sudden , some people think they are Olympic caliber and they are unbeatable. Question to St Lucys posters??...Who have you beaten that is ranked??

Go Regents said:

I noticed the same discrepancy. Not sure why Diamond Bar is ranked so high in CIF, considering that the only strong team they have played(Los Osos), they lost 0-2. As I stated before, Walnut & South Hills could go either way. I will say that Los Altos starting 5 are a good team, however they do not have much depth. St. Lucy's beat them down the stretch after they wore them down, but took them 5 games to do it. I would put them above a talented, but struggling Bonita team.

Joe Amat said:

sgvolley ,
CIF Polls are usually done by a number of coaches and are based on *who would beat who*. This is done because CIF uses these polls as a guideline to begin to draw up playoff pairings - so *accuracy* becomes important as the season goes on. When new information comes up after certain matchups occur, *they are rarely afraid to make sure that the poll changes* - even if it has drastic rearrangements.

The Trib polls are based on... well they're different than that.

sgvolley said:

Its interesting to see the differences between the local rankings and the recently released CIF poll. Both Walnut(5) and Diamond Bar (7) are ranked above South Hills(8) and St. Lucy's(10) in the CIF poll. Also Bonita (4) is ranked above Los Altos(7) in CIF.
Regardless, the SGV is well represented.

Chargers!! said:

I never said CO should be top 5. They have not played great teams. Gabrielino may have been toughest or San dimas but they may be over rated right now. They will not be tested til league. Los Altos and Bonita will be tests but even Los altos doesnt seem to be too good right now. I wish they had tougher schedule. Just have to wait til playoffs.Good luck to all teams

Chargers: I corrected Charter Oak's record. Thanks for the tip.

Regents: I just don't think South Hills has played their way out of the top ranking. As I said on the football threat last week, once a team has been solidified in a postition, they have to play their way out of it, either by losing to a team they shouldn't lose to, or by being stretched to four or five games to a team they should beat in three.

Tribune Reader 2 said:

If the caliber of schools you have beaten are Covina, than it is not a feat to be unbeaten. I hope CO fans are not saying they should be in the top 5.

Go Regents said:

BTW, St. Lucy's only loss to Walnut at the Ganesha Tournament was by a combined 7 points over the three games. Although they didn't get it done when they needed to, this could have easily swung the other way. I look for a rematch in CIF! I see little separation at the top 4 spots and only a slight drop amoung the next 3. Will be interesting to see how the next two weeks shape out before league starts.

Chargers!! said:

Charter Oak Has not lost. They took down Covina last night in 3 games.

Go Regents said:

Granted that they have lost to two div.1 schools, but still not sure how South Hills comes in above Walnut. St. Lucy's will have to knock them off that perch next week!

tootney said:

The St. Lucy's match against Alta Loma went 3 games to St.Lucy's win column. Senior Setter Allie Schuman serving in all 3 games was pivotal as well as her steady distributing of the ball to outside hitters Lauren Frazier, Deanna Dalton, Carly Miller et al. The middles, Kristen Gasparo and Megan Callen provided good blocking and hitting as well. Libero Christine Aguilera was rock solid in the back row.
