Are the CIF Polls getting it right?

| | Comments (29) |

The CIF-SS Polls help determine seedings and playoffs pairings. With three weeks to go, here is how our locals stand.

Pac-5 Division
1. Long Beach Poly, 2. Orange Lutheran, 3. Los Alamitos, 4. Crespi, 5. Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, 6. Edison, 7. Mater Dei, 8. Tesoro, 9. St. John Bosco, 10. Mission Viejo. Others: Compton, San Clemente, Bishop Amat, Servite.
Fred's note:: Bishop Amat and Orange Lutheran have the same record, and Amat beat Orange Lutheran. The Lancers should at least be in the top ten. Will two losses in the Serra stop them from earning an at-large? It would be close.

Southeast Division
1. South Hills, 2. Charter Oak, 3. California, 4. Santa Fe, 5. Muir, 6. La Serna, 7. Crescenta Valley, 8. Rowland, 9. West Covina, 10. Bonita. Others: Walnut.
Fred's note: This is close and hard to complain about. All ten teams are legit with the exception of maybe Crescenta Valley. Muir should probably be No. 3 in my opinion considering their only loss is to Oaks Christian.

Mid-Valley Division
1. San Dimas, 2. Cerritos Valley Christian, 3. Monrovia, 4. Azusa, 5. San Marino, 6. Northview, 7. Rosemead, 8. Paraclete, 9. Workman, 10. Pomona.
Fred's note: This is so ridiculous there should be an investigation. Why is Rosemead still ranked behind Monrovia (whom they crushed 42-21), not to mention Azusa and San Marino? Azusa won't lose another game so will likely get a seed and be no worse than a No. 4. Top four should be San Dimas, Rosemead, Northview, Cerritos Valley Christian.

East Valley Division
1. St. Margaret's, 2. Marantha, 3. Brentwood, 4. Twentynine Palms, 5. Aquinas, 6. Fillmore, 7. Desert, 8. Santa Paula, 9. Malibu, 10. Big Bear. Othes: Arrowhead Christian, Western Christian.
Fred's note: Western Christian is in such a tough league, they may not make the playoffs.

breaking news-just like all the haters, you change your argument midstream. like the early predictions 0-10, 1-9, 3-7 - oops 6-1!
add to that a D1 playoff win over Redlands, back to back demolishings of Damien, Glendora, and Charter Oak
and in our worst two years ever swept a Rancho Cucamonga team that Charter Oak was happy to get a tie with, swept a St Francis team that beat Los Altos when they were still good and 4-0 at the time, and swept St Paul in a year when they won a CIF title.
next question?

Check your L.A. Times. Where are the rest of the SGV Powerhouses? Pompous some are but then again all schools have these kinds of fans. Amat fans are not the only ones that come in here pounding, I imagine Amat fan just pounds back because they get pounded on, hey everyone wants to knock off the guy on top. This year Amat is on top and every SGV HS wants to show how they measure up. Credit to WC and Diamond Ranch they scheduled Amat, the rest like CO SH SD GLENDORA ETC. get off Amat and save your hate because until you play them you have nothing to measure against. Loyola in a possible rain game how great is that going to be.

Here's some breaking news in response to your post...

Amat beat Santa Margarita and Servite in 2004.

Beat Mater Dei and Loyola in 2005

Beat Loyola the next 2 years...

These are not D-7 programs and these victories were not 8 years ago. Research before running the mouth is often beneficial to your health and that of your readers.

Please, don't make me bring out "The List" of Amat players to play in college or the professional ranks for you to compare to "the SGV Powerhouses". You really don't want to know... trust me.

I'm going to take it easy and assume you're a kid... so here's a lesson I try to bring to all.

The Tribune rankings I am tired of hearing about. Amat this CO that SH this San Dimas that. All the argue ments of who should be at the top. IMO..that list should be all the SGV schools except Amat. Amat should not be on that list, reason: A D1 program Amat, the rest of the schools are what correct me if I am wrong D5 and below. This is not a fair measuring tool seeing Amat plays in a total different enviroment altogether. The only reason the Tribune includes Amat is to sell newspapers and have that Big name storied past in the mix. Keep the articles coming like this mornings Gaise and Anderson but leave Amat off the List it has no meaning or justification to Amat. By the Way Fred we demand a reprint tomorrow 47-39 vs West Covina?? I think that may have been the O-Lutheran score. WC scored 6 points against Amat in their game. But 39? In their dreams.

dubb3trathree: Thanks, very well explained. VVL should make it past 1st round.. But like you said, there are still more games to be played.

dubb3trathree said:

well there a couple things that I think everyone forgets when it comes to ranking teams. You have to look at each league as a its own separate league. And when you rank them do it by wins and loses not bout who you think is better because of a game. Ill focus on the Mid-Valley cause that is whom i follow.

Now you got SD number 1 and will probably go undefeated and be top seed. Well the CIF polls mean nothing if you win your league. If you win league you get a automatic first round home game. So San Dimas,Rosemead,Paraclete not CVC cause Paraclete is leading that league. Monrovia and Azusa. Will all host games. Now were CIF comes into play is the seeds 6 through 16. Now teams like Northview, CVC, and San Marino will get home games as well. Leaving the rest to be seeded by the polls.

So if Mid Valley Playoffs started tomorrow this is what it would look like.

1. San Dimas (VVL) vs 16. Seirra Vista (MTV)
2. Monrovia (RHL)vs 15. Duarte (MTV) *Monrovia due to 3 seed in ranking and league champ.
3.Azusa (MTV) vs 14.Temple City *Azusa high Rank and league champ.
4.Rosemead(MVL) vs 13. Pomona Now Rosemead gets the low seed due to ranking 7th but are league champs.
5.Paraclete(OLY) vs. 12.El Monte(MVL)
6.Valley Christian(OLY) vs 11. Arroyo (MVL)
7.San Marino (RHL) vs 10.Village Christian (OLY)
8. Northview (VVL) vs 9. Workman (MTV)

Now some teams like Pomona that is ranked 10th at this time would have to play a higher seed due to the fact they(CIF) wont have a team face a team from there own league in the first Round. So the Top 8 teams all get Home Playoff games. And Since Vally Christian is ranked#2 but second in their league they would get a high playoff seed. But i think this is great some of the possible match-ups!
You could have San Dimas meeting Northview again in the second round or a tough lil Workman squad. Monrovia seeing Duarte again in a playoff game! You could have Monrovia and Rosemead meet up again in the Semi-finals with the San Dimas /Valley Christian or Azusa winner. And then in the finals we get what we all expect to see in the Finals. San Dimas vs Rosemead!!! But there are still 3 weeks and lots of games to be played. So this could all change. So the teams that are supposed to be there in the end will probably be there!!!

Well, it's that time of the week again and for a football junkie like me, Thursday is the first day of fun time.

Amat's feshman team plays today at 4pm to day.

Then after that game, I am going walk over to Basset high school (where else can you do something like that eh ?) and watch their game against Gladstone.

On Friday night, Im going to plant my kid next to the door, to hand out trick or treat candy, (so I wont have to do it), then i'll sneek out to La Puente High and watch the Sierra Vista game.

On Saturday, it's off to Glendale high to watch Amat's first league game against Loyola.

WOW !!

You know, I guess that all that I am saying here is that High school football is a tremendous value when you take everthing into consideration.

It really dosent matter to me weather or not I like a team or weather or not they are any good.

The fact that it's high school football and that it comes without the high cost of what a professional sports game would cost me is what makes it so intersting.

We are indeed very fortunate.

Wow looks like our Bruins might be stealing another kid from Hawaii(Norm Chow recruit).I know Our Bruin family has taken a lot of abuse these last few weeks but there is light at the end of the tunnel, its just a little longer of a tunnel. But it is still good to see us out recruiting these other schools and having these kids re-commit to Bruin Football About that MEAD vs CATS match up a few weeks ago.I do agree Rosemead was the better Team that night. But we also took the lead that 3rd quarter 21-14 .3 turnovers later you have your result.Only meaning the game was a lot closer then the final.Sorry just had to defend Fred's assesment of our CRUSHING(another low blow Fred wait till we see you in Cerritos).Anyways does Rosemead deserve to have a better ranking then #7 No question about it.I think its a joke. Its only right haven beating us they should be ahead of us.I think they are definitely one of the ones to beat. Having either seen first hand or heard second, San Dimas and Rosemead are the class of the Division. Those Teams will absolutely roll through their leagues.Which only means your going to have beat one of them to get to the Final. Then beat the other one to win the thing. No Problem ?? But that I guess is what makes Playoff Football so beautiful.Look playing MEAD first hand We know if we were to see them again we are going to have to strap it on and come ready to play hard nosed Football all 4 quarters .Rosemead is as physical as they come around the valley (ask South Hills).Look can't wait to get into all this CIF poll B/S later.Look it doesn't matter where the heck your ranked.Win league.Get a home game first round.Away you go.Like they say"the cream will always rise to the top"or something like that.Talk to you Eastsiders in a few weeks for Season 3...Holla back Freddie!
Go Cats
Go Bruins

I"m pretty sure jcaz was not making predictions but rather playing the "what if" game. However we all know that if "if's and buts'" were beer and peanuts we'd have a helluva party"

I can assure you that those who matter - players and coaches - are singularly focused on Saturday night. Us bloggers can look ahead and speculate all we want.

I do think that jcaz initial point about blog posts illustrates what I've been saying for quite some time. It's not really the Amat bloggers making posts and monopolizing the board (as some have claimed) nearly as much as it is the stalwarts taking on the AHC (Amat Haters Club) to defend truth, justice, and the Amat way!

OK - a little overboard... but you get the drift !:?)

AnyTimeAnyWhere said:

This is a perfect example why Amat should not play schools from this area. Those games do nothing for us. If we win we were supposed to. No benefit there. if we lose then well, we lose. Again, no benefit. Its time to remove these teams from our schedule and replace them with real quality opponents from our own division.

With all due respect, you think maybe, your getting ahead of yourself? You should have one thing on your mind LOYOLA.

If you were to pull that off, you would be the new Guru. I think you going to look like a knucklehead, but good luck.

jcaz said:

I have noticed how there are fewer blogs posts on the Bishop Breakdown than there were before.

It seemed to me that when we were losing, the haters were on this thing like fly's on top of poo poo, but now that we are winning, it seems as if they are keeping a low profile.

As for these rankins, well, I think we have a situation where both the CIF and many of our own locals, are looking at this years Amat team thru last years glasses.

Amat can go unbeaten in league play this year, and it could just as easily not win more than one game.

In either event, this team has most certianly performed much better than what was the expectation at the beginning of this campaign.

For those who think that it will be impossible for Amat to win all their league games, then let me once again remind you of how impossible it was for Amat to go into OL's home stadium and win a convincing game against the OC's Lancers.

Yes, I know people (especialy the haters)don't want to hear that. They, dismiss that win and and call it a fluke.

Now the argument is that the reason that Amat is not rated in the top of the PAC 5 is because they have played weaker teams as of late. But keep in mind that while that is true, Amat has nevertheless, still won the games they had to.

Now, we have league play coming up, and everyone is still uncertian as to how this team will perform. courious is'nt it ?

If Amat beats Loyola, the haters will still say that Loyola is the sick child of the league, and they should have won especialy if Barr does not suit up.

And, if Amat beats Crespi, then it will be another fluke.

But if Amat wins against Notre Dame too, then what can be said at that point ?

Will CIF change the rankings ?

And will the tribune put Amat in second place for one week, if it loses to Crespi, but then beats Notre Dame the next ?

We shall see.

Having never seen either CO or SH I'm not ready to guarantee anything in terms of Muir matching up with either of them. What I will say though is that I GUARANTEE Muir will DEFINITELY go past the second round and more than likely head in to the Final round.

Btw, is it me, or have the SH fans been wound a little tight lately?

TopDogCrowned said:

No way will SH lose to the west, this isnt Bogans first rodeo, and weve broken plenty of colts, stangs and such over the years. . . . . and will continue to do just that. Expect Muir to lose to WC or any other under dog, Muir goes no further than 2nd round bank on it. Expect SH or CO takin the cake this year.

wattttttttttt,

I see your point. Workman has a Calpreps rating of (-18.0) which is far below some of the other teams ranked behind them in CIF, nameley SEM(3.9), Whittier Christian(2.8), Pomona(1.0), TC(-1.0), Arroyo(-8.4), and Duarte(-10.1).

The truth of the matter is though, it doesn't really matter once you get past the first 5-6 teams in most divisions. But rated (-18.0) and ranked 9th in the division? That's pretty bad.

wattttttttt said:

workman ranked in the mid-valley?!!!!!! what!

Don said:

Count me in Stang Fan's corner. Calpreps isn't the final word of High School football rating, but for my money it is as good as we have, especially as we near the last couple weeks of league play.

The Calpreps ratings, especially in the SE, are interesting to me because they bear out what some of us have said since summer. It would come down to the best in the San Antonio, Del Rio, and Miramonte along with Muir, (so long as Muir maintained a healthy, eligible squad). No surprises thus far except Rowland, (I didn't see CalHi playing as well as they have and the loss of Marcus Aldecoa really hurt El Rancho's run), and maybe Crescenta Valley.

In the Mid Valley, I too am a little amazed at the lack of love shown Rosemead. They are one of the two or three teams in the D who actually have a chance to beat the Saints; the others being Paraclete, and Northview, (especially if they get a second chance in the playoffs).

As far as the Pac-5 Poll goes, the problem with Amat's place is probably due as much to the fact they played two D5 and two D7 teams in preseason as anything else. Most of the other teams on the list played a steady diet of Pac-5, Inland, and Western or Northern Division schools.

I told you about Western Christian four or five weeks ago. Geeez.

The Stang Fan said:

Freddie J,

One answer......HELL NO!!!!

The CIF polls have always been notoriously HORRIBLE! Year after year they always seem to screw things up. I understand that it's a difficult task to rank ALL these teams, but CV Christian, Monrovia, Azuza, SM, and Norhtview all AHEAD of Rosemead?!?!?!?! That is ludicrous!!! The Mead is putting the beat down on teams and almost bested the "#1" ranked team in the Southeast and the best CIF can do is #7? In the Mid-Valley? That's the type of **it I'm talking about. Your points about the other questionable rankings ring true as well, but none moreso than the Mead.

At first I was taken aback by Muir's #5 ranking because there is not doubt in my mind that they are a top three team, but with Cal at 7-0 and Sante Fe at 6-1 it doesn't seem so bad. Those two schools face off anyway so one of them will get bumped down.

My biggest problem with the CIF polls is when it comes to seeding. ALL other polls mean nothing when it comes down to it, but these polls have a lot to do with how teams are seeded. But HOW MUCH influnece do they have? That I don't know and any enlightenment would be appreciated. Joe Amat?

I know Calpreps is the not the end-all-be-all authority on Socal HS football but here is their take on the top 10 teams in the divisions.

SE division:

1. CO- 34.3
2. Muir- 32.0
3. SF- 30.3
4. SH- 29.8
5. Cal- 26.6
6. LS- 26.4
7. Rowland- 24.7
8. BoHi- 23.0
9. WC- 22.5
10.CV- 22.4
11.DR- 21.8 (strength of schedule makes all the difference here)
12.Burroughs- 15.9

Mid-Valley:

1. SD- 26.4
2. Mead- 21.8
3. NV-17.7
4.Paraclete- 16.5
5. SM- 14.7
6. VC- 9.9
7. Monrovia- 9.5
8. Azuza- 6.6
9. SEM- 3.9
10.Whit. Christ.- 2.8
11.Pomona- 1.0
12.TC- (-1.0)
