Bishop Breakdown
We'll post a Bishop Breakdown thread to evaluate Friday night's games, the players, coaching staff's, and the next opponent.

With the coaching staff in place, this feels like a make or break year at Bishop Amat. It's probably not fair to expect too much from Steve Hagerty and staff in their first season, but there's nothing like the excitement and emotions of a quick turnaround. Whatever happens, week-by-week, we'll follow the ride.
Last week: Bishop Amat 17, Diamond Ranch 6
Friday's game: Bishop Amat (4-1) at St. Francis (5-0), 7:30 p.m.

Notes: You didn't think the Lancers were going blow out all the Valley teams did you? Give them credit, it was a great three-game stretch over West Covina, Damien and Diamond Ranch, and of course it all started with a huge win at Orange Lutheran. But this is where it heats up. They're going back on the road for the first time in a month, against an undefeated team that has given them fits in recent years. If you really think the Lancers are going to compete in the Serra, then it starts with winning games like this. On the Pasadena side of town, Star-News prep editor Miguel Melendez is hyping it up to no end. You see, the Pasadena area has been down since I left for the Tribune. The Rio Hondo league is looking more like the Montview every day, and the Pacific League is kind of boring. All they really have to get excited about is St. Francis and Muir. So, here it goes, the Tribune No. 1 against the Star-News No. 1. This will decide who IS the top team in the Valley.

Let me tell you why Randy Tanner. First, in a different offense he would have had my job...QB. Randy could throw the ball 75 yards without straining. I played with him in Jr. High and HS. My junior year (first half season) I led the Valley in passing. This was because of RT's catch and runs. He could run, catch, return, throw...He threw reverse passes for USC. He also played baseball at SC and was recruited to play Basketball. Had he not blew out his knee at Notre Dame his Soph. year... we would be assessing his pro carreer. As far as Amat. I know am and good friends with Eric B., and he would paraise Randy above himself. Daylon was a different pos...but at Amat...Randy did more for his team. Daylon played when they had many solid palyers. So did Randy...but different. Remember he was Player of the Decade for the SGV. Says alot. I give love to all the Amat Family but my boy Randy is among the best of all time...
Thanx Joe, I knew you would have the 411!
does anyone know how good st. francis actually is? i know the running back is really good, but i'm wondering about the team as a whole. they've certainly put up a lot of points. amat should be ready to compete at a high level this week. should be a great game.
st. francis hasnt really played anyone too tough, but theyve blown everyone out exept rio mesa which was an away game, and riley was hurt
CO Bro,
Randy Tanner may not only be the best "running back" the valley has seen but was one of the best all-around athletes in the SGV. (If you remember their was a discussion a while back when I said Mike Smith from Los Altos may have been the best over Tanner. Tanner was far more athletic in the traditional sports and could have won CIF in the sprints if he ran track instead of pitching, playing shortstop and centerfield. Smith had skills in volleyball and golf to go with football and basketball.)
Tanner was All-CIF in three sports AS A SOPHOMORE! Led the Lancers to the CIF Finals in '83. He was 5'11 and jumped center, could get his elbow around the rim and was a scorer. Dropped about 40 on a really good Carson team. Played football AND baseball at USC became a receiver and had a horrific knee injury on a punt return that took away that extra burst of speed. He played pro baseball for a while and never got over the hump.
JJ was "in-between" Tanner and Bieniemy and played with both... so I'd take his word for it.

Miguel Melendez on the blog for the Star News is asking for you to go over to their blog. Give him a thrill and drop him a line.
LETS GO DR! GET SOME!

How could JJ put Randy Tanner over Eric Bieniemy and Daylon McCutchen.? Tanner must have been some HS player.? I see Eric Bieniemy and McCutchen have more school records then Tanner.????
Hey Joe A. give me some background on the Randy Tanner that JJ had a hard on about. Was he really the best high school running back in his day?
Also about the announcer, funny some posters are saying how annoying this guy is. As I was watching the game on Fox, I could hear him in the back and I must admit he was a bit nerve rattling!

Good luck vs Aunt Franny!
One more note of some interest. It seems that Loyola's Anthony Barr's team is playing against St Paul this week. What makes the game more interesting is that his mother, is the principal over at St Paul. Who will she root for ?
SF should've RAN AWAY on Rio Mesa instead of 17-7.
st francis 34 amat 7 amat loses werd up
There's also an interesting name at QB over there at St Francis too... Sciarra !
Should be a fun one!
Fred,
The quarterback from Amat is from the West Side. McClanahan lives two blocks from Temple City High School that should help to stir the pot
How's it going coach, I was just poking a little fun. I miss the Mooney-Garrison showdowns. But here's the thing with Monrovia, too many of their studs transfer out, Amat, COak, etc. Imagine how good the Cats would be if Thropay and others stayed? Demographics haven't affected Monrovia like it has other Rio Hondo league teams, so I think they will be legit again. I just don't think its happening this year. In the Mid-Valley, whose going to stop San Dimas or Rosemead?
Hello my Bruin Brother.Long time no hear.Just got done reading your last post and Wham-o! I read this."The Rio Hondo league is looking more like the Montview every day".Wow low blow I sure hope you might mean the bottom half of the league.I remember a time when you were a loyal fan.I just hope that East-side arrogance doesn't effect an old West-side guy like yourself.Just remember anybody can win any given day.Look being an AMAT grad(1990') I know how it is to get caught up in the hype.Bishop almost seems to pull a curtain over your eyes that does not let you see just whats on the otherside. But listen Freddy I think you got it all wrong. This St.Francis Team is absolutly loaded. This kid Riley is better then anybody on that Amat team.Yes,Bowers,Gaisse and he's just a junior. I wish I could be their to watch this showdown.Wait till you see this kid.I remember a game 2002 Monrovia vs. Temple City a kid named Desmond Reed put on a show, you were their. This kid is that level.I still wish the Lancers find a way but I think they will have there hands full. Just wanted to say don't count out the Cats this year just yet.The real season is about to start. Doing a great job over there.Still wish you were here with us.This kid Miguel is doing a real good job so far looks like he is going to be a good one....
