Now they have it

Here's a look at Valencia High School's new FieldTurf surface, which would have come in handy during last season's CIF-SS semifinal playoff game between South Hills and El Dorado.
I covered the Glendora-El Dorado game last week, and noticed that El Dorado's home field - Valencia High School - has a new FieldTurf surface.
I couldn't resist posting this photo here.
I guess the FieldTurf surface comes one season too late for South Hills, which missed a chance to upset El Dorado in the CIF-SS playoffs last season when Huskies' placekicker Michael Scott slipped in the mud on the then grass field during a 25-yard field goal try that would have won it for South Hills. El Dorado won in overtime, 23-17.
I guess better late than never doesn't exactly apply here.

Comments
He didn't slip. He missed. Serves South Hills right. For trying to run a sweep play to score and getting stuck on the 5 yard line on the right hash. One of the toughest kicks to make.
I hear Chaffey HS and montclair are also getting turf fields next year. In fact the whole Chaffey District is supposedly going to be putting that stuff in on all of their football fields eventually. When is Covina Valley going to up the ante and put some turf in at the beloved CDF?

Did anyone else see the report a month or so ago on all these FieldTurf fields? That the green dye contains lead?
It sounded like a real scandal -- would everyone have to dump their expensive field and reinstall grass, with lawsuits galore -- but I've heard nothing since.

Jay Darmstetter of L.A.Wilson back in the 70's was what a real HS football announcer should be like. This Hayward guy is full of himself and is so one sided to the Amat team. There is just no rhyme or reason to do play by play as a HS announcer. Then for the love of god he goes into who is playing professional sports that came out of Amat like the opposing team cares or Gives a Rats as- about any of that hogwash.

Amat FB PA announer [Bryan Heyward] IS terrible and DOES take away from the games.
One of the things I pay attention to when I go to games at OTHER FB stadiums is the PA announcer[to hear/experience if any other programs have this issue]. At NO other stadium does a PA announcer announce who the QB, RB etc. are on EVERY play. And the dragging of the pronunciation of the players names or LLLLLLLLancers is irritating.
I do NOT care HOW long BH has done this, but he either needs to change his 'style' or be replaced.
Do NOT know when BH will be shown the door, but the sooner the better.

justthefacts,
First, if we're talking facts, CIF doesn't get ANY of the gate, concessions, souveniers, parking, etc until the playoffs. after that they get 50% of the gate. obviously - they haven't received a penny from Amat football in three years. So it has not been "a cash cow" lately... but it used to be and could/will be again.
The money CIF gets in the form of dues is twenty-three cents per pupil enrolled plus a $25.00 fee for each boys’ and girls’ varsity sport engaged in by that school. In all rounds of the football, basketball and volleyball playoff games, including the championship games, the net profit shall be split 20% to each school and 60% to the CIF Southern Section (changed recently from 25/25/50 split)
Those are the facts regarding Financial Policies in the CIF-Blue Book.
Second, the parking/tennis structure IS a good idea. It was suggested years ago on the other side of campus when the need for a covered lunch area and the obvious necessity of a gym was thought of. Had someone forced MSGr to come up with a 15 yr plan 15 years ago he wouldn't have nickel and dimed us into the position we are in today. A parking structure/covered lunch area could have easily been paired with the development of the gym and the upper level of the structure would have served as a great entrance from the top of the gym - enhancing the present design.
In conjunction with that, while building the now poorly-named gym, a TREMENDOUS savings could have been incurred by building home bleachers into and/or attached to the design. The stadium entrance could have been in the same upper level location. combining these features WITH the parking/tennis structure would have satisfied every County parking requirement and resulted in a comprehensive athletic complex that actually saved space on campus. 1 project - 5 solutions (gym, stadium, covered lunch area, tennis and parking). That solution is still entirely possible, even given the space restrictions on campus.
The problem is MSGr holes up in his little office, allows little to no input on major decisions to anyone. The fact that he spent millions on a gym that has no more courts than the previous gym is beyond me. An additional 15 feet could have added a whole extra court - taking scheduling of practices to a whole new level. That's just ONE example of his idiocy. He bout an "off the rack" gym when he could have had a custom one that met all our needs. All to save a buck - while, to the unknowing, it looks like he's a hero for spending a buck.
We will grow at an exponential rate when the wonderful day comes that he gets put out to pasture. We are achieving in spite of him - not thanks to him!

All the Amat Stadium needs is a facelift. Leave the Grass field, I agree. Redo the seating area for the home team and underneath it build the dressing room for the visiting team. Time to build it in Concrete with back rest type seating on both sides of the field. New annoucers booth, new scoreboard with a built in sound to signal end of quarter and end of play. End zone seats on both ends of the field. Baseball Diamond needs a HR fence. This will be alot cheaper then revamping and flopping the baseball field with the football field.

as long as we are talking about Amat Football how about replacing the PA Announcer there- the guy is terrible- hes got an awful voice and thinks hes a play by play announcer. I follow Amat but cant stand going to the home games and having to listen to him. Does anyone know his background?? is he a teacher at Amat?- someone should have told him how a PA Announcer should sound.

Some comments about the postings...
Los Angeles County has parking requirements that make it difficult to plan out any stadium moves or expansion. The overall future plan is to build 2 story classrooms and make a parking structure.
The Student Activity Center is paid off just recently. WAY ahead of the planned schedule. You can thank Monsignor for this.
Still a myth...the football program does not net out tons of money like people may think. CIF gets a chunk of it and the moneys go to pay for the rest of the other sports programs.
Basset Unified or any other school district in the area has NO desire to team up with Amat in any joint facility venture. They have no desire to sell any school property either to Amat...not even the adjacent school that has a regular football field and track that goes largely unused. No way is the school distict going to help out Amat that draws away most of the talented students out of their own schools. Amat pays an unreasonable $3,000 a month to lease a parking area next to the school. That's about it. Notice that school has all new air conditioning units...all compliments of Amat. This particular school district is in dire need of funds, but won't budge from selling ANYTHING to Amat.
As far as so many other schools getting new fields...this money came from bonds issued years ago for school improvements. Not from the normal tax assesments for school districts. We as tax payers paid for that. Amat gets no such benefit of this bond issuance which is a shame.

Just got a glimpse of the new campus, Amat sure has a lot to look forward to. Only one question, how does Msgr. plan on paying for it. Heck I think he still owes on the pavilion and that was at about 3.1 Million. Heck this is a total renovation, at todays costs you are probably looking at close to 100 Million dollars.
Not sure if anyone has done any measurements but the softball field is way out there and the size is comparable to the infield of the baseball field.

Joe Amat,
our thoughts usually run on the same line. I cringe everytime I think about the money I donated to the center to carry Msgr. Carroll's name on it. Heck the Alma Mater still does not reside in the gymnasium, sad to even think that.I think the Tate Duff Memorial Student Center or the Alumni Pavilion would have been good.
To put the stadium way out there in the middle of the field, Amat would have to finance another locker room. Maybe this time they can get it right and give oposing teams a place to dress. I have said it before and I will say it again, I will not donate another dollar to Amat until Msgr. Carroll has retired and I speak for a good number of the alumni. As for the baseball and softball stadium, unless Amat purchases some land next door they will have some awfully shory fences.

Of course everthing has a cost associated with it, otherwise it would all be easy right ?
As I said on an earlier thread, why not look at finding a solution by thinking outside the box a bit.
In other words, why not get it all done now, without spending a whole lot of cash ?
Here's an idea, what do you all think ?
A new basball stadium could be placed where the current football stadium is right now. In fact, you could even put a new softball field (lets not forget the girls here) right along side the basball diamond and have two fields back to back in the area where the football games are currently being played at.
You could use the existing football stands (no need to spend more money here) for the home teams side of the field (for both the boys and girls teams) and set up the bleachers that are currently used for the visting football teams as grandstands for the visiting basball and softball squads. You can set them up back to back and save space that way also.
That would solve one problem and Amat would not have to give up any space for parking too.
In addition, a spectator could, in theory, watch both a baseball game and a softball game at the same time simply by sitting in the current football grandstands.
As for the football stadium, Amat could (as I said earlier), go in with Basset and expand and improve that facility, and create a better visiting side of the stadium by making the visitors side our home side because as it is right now, the over all facility is lacking a few aminities.
Of course, we could also consider leasing or buying the land west of the current stadium and expand there.
I guess that all I am trying ot say is that, even though there may not be allot of money to spend right now, why not try to look at solving the problem with short term solutions until we get the revenue stream up and running, because at present, the current plan is what, 5-10 years away ?,
With my suggestions in place, we could have this thing up and running as early as next year for football, and this year for both the baseball and softball teams.
Any thoughts ?

john,
I agree with your concept of simply redoing Kiefer in the present location.
Have you seen the plans for the redesign of campus? Moronic! MSGr is a lunatic! Things were moved with no rhyme or reason and I guarantee that it won't go down the way it's planned. Put the football field where the baseball field is and the baseball field where the football field is ... just because! Makes NO sense and an ENORMOUS waste of dollars
The bottom line is they MADE him come up with a 15 year plan in order to approve his request to build a real performing arts building - which he's going to tear down the faculty house to do.
Here's the plan if anyone hasn't seen it-

Mark my words... NEVER happen.
I'm still bitter that MHphd named the Student Activity Center after a former St Paul Principal. I remember your mantra - MSGr must go!

I for one hope Amat never installs a turf field. There is something to be said for playing on the real stuff.

Gotta love the playing surface that Field Turf has to offer.
I couldn't help but laugh on Friday while I was watching the Amat game and John Jackson made the comment that Amat was the same as when he left. Same field, same stands, same scoreboard. They could have replaced the scoreboard. It is time to invest in the biggest money maker that the school has. I know that there is a new field in the future but that future is about 5-10 years away. Msgr. Carroll needs to invest in the stadium now. He has the coaching staff in place now he needs to invest in the field. Instead of moving it to along Sunset, tear down the entire field and build a new stadium closer to the student activity center. Heck you will not loose that much parking and you will not have to touch the baseball and softball fields.
This field turf seems to be the ticket and it is a shame Amat still plays on grass....
