Northview looks ghetto and do they have good sports programs? Are you kidding me? Ask the upper ups at the district...what's best looking high school? They say Northview without a doubt. Sports programs? Northview won league in football, basketball, wrestling, girls softball, and baseball. They won wrestling cif for like the 15th time in a row and there baseball team won cif too. Did Covina win a championship last year in any sport? Also, who wants to go to Covina since 5th grade? Someone that hasn't been watching games or reading the paper.

pp....what exactly does THE FARM have that is so incredibly attractive? Again - both decent "older" schools, bad areas near BOTH schools.. Get over yourself - shall we compare covina to other schools, like their athletics dept. - not exactly known for the "hottest looking school"..

I actually dont have a kid that attends Covina. I could careless about any of thier levels. I did not respond to defend Covina, my response was to back up KG. Both Covina and NV are both weak in academics (greatschools.com look it up before you respond). NV just looks ghetto, do they have a good sports program... so does Dominguez Compton but I still would not send any of my kids there.

My kid doesn't go to Covina as I said in a previous post. He did know where he wanted to go since 5th. grade, it was not CHS. My point is, because he was set in where he was going to go, he never got pressured to change his mind to attend CHS.

Although my son is not a colt he played for the Vikings and I was there at the banquet. The hat idea was from the head coach not KG and the idea was first mentioned and talked about within the parents at the previous banquet. That group had kids go to Amat, NV, SH and Covina. It was the final year of JO and the idea was to take pictures with a hat of what school they were attending.For those that are pointing fingers at KG you are way off. If you have ever had any contact with this gentleman you would know he does not have a bad bone in his body. KG is the one who brought back JO football back in Covina for the City of Covina not just CHS.
I have a feeling this is coming from a parent whose kid was a 10 play kid with the Vikings and is now a non starter at NV (frosh) was really pissed that got spanked by the Colts (frosh).

Can someone please explain THE HAT situation from the Covina Viking coach? I am confused. As a complete outsider - It sure sounds suspicios. Covina coach coaches all these kids prior to High School and then they all go there? Please shed light.

covina viking, unless your kid was supposed to go to Covina from the get-go or you are an alumni - no way in hell I beleive your kid has wanted to go to Covina since 5th grade. Come on. Covina has never been enough of a power house and do not mean that disrespectfully.

For some reason the hat thing doesn't bother me so much and I don't know why.

I guess, for what it's worth, I've always thought the *Covina* "Vikings" have always done a pretty good job of being fair and equitable in the city of Covina. They use one HS's name and the others nickname. They use neither of their colors. they used to practice/play at Covina - now they do so at NV.

There is no CIF rule that prohibits a coach from coaching a player before they enter HS. Happens in other sports ALL the time. In fact in a real twist the rule used to be that out of season you couldn't coach your own kids - but you could coach OTHER kids. CIF? Go figure.

What IS a violation is a coach using "Undue influence" by offering special inducements, starting spots, etc. I don't hear anyone making those claims. Plus - they are VERY tough to prove.

Kids typically choose between the two schools in Covina, while some may try to jump through hoops to get to South Hills- Which the district makes really difficult. They'll let you go the other way from SH to NV/CHS, but they make it tougher to go from NV/CHS to SH.

... of course some kids/families might even choose the more attractive option, so I'd be even better with it if Glaspy would put that blue and gold hat on the table too !:?)

Let's just say as a parent I heard about the Covina Vikings posts and Coach Glaspy so I thought I would confess but like they say, "YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!" As parents we saw an opportunity for our kids to continue to play together and continue to be successful. Yes coach Glaspy recruited us but we also recruited him. Would I consider this inappropriate or tampering probably but ultimately we made the decisions to do what we did in the best interest of our children and that was our responsibility as far as paperwork, relocating, addresses, or transfers. So if anyone should be held accountable that would be us parents and bottom line your right we'll just keep winning and everyone else we play will keep losing so for the next four years your going to be seriously miserable unless you accept reality better yet come on over with us. There's always plenty of room on the bandwagon. You know what they say if you can't fight them join them. Fight on boys!

It's not about how much fun they had with the hat thing, it's about high school officials being there and letting it happen...would it have happened if it was northview or south hills where a majority of the kids were going to school? Absolutely not and Coach Glas should not have allowed that and he's not suppose to coach kids before they get to high school. They sold their soul to the devil with allowing McDonough to play with a police anklet on (imagine if they didn't, would be 10 years straight of being crappy) and now this hat stuff happens. If you look at covina athletics, it's a desperate time and desperate times call for desperate measures. 48-7 my friends. I love seeing them get pounded.

This is for the coaches,bloggers,reporters,and fans who seem to be blaming West Covina's defense for the loss to a vastly improved Rowland Team. Are you serious?

West Covina's defense has lived on the edge this season by giving up good chunks of yardage, but they have stepped up when they needed to(mainly in the 2nd Half), and to allow 14 points to a team (Rowland) that has been scoring much more than that is not a bad night.

The offense was where the big problems were; whether you want to blame the play calling,lack of blocking etc...scoring 7 points in not going to get the job done against any decent team.

On a separate note; I keep hearing and reading about how this team "should have won" or this team "should have lost" is there really such a thing?

Especially in prep football, if you make the plays when you need to and can keep the mistakes from affecting the scoreboard, you will win, if you don't, you won't. Simple as that.

Amat Fans dont get your hopes up that Anthony will not suit up Saturday. It is league and he will be there. The injury is minor and he will be ready come Saturday. Amat is having a good year may the best team win but I dont think you have faced a RB like Anthony Barr this year. He is a lot better this year then what you seen of him last year, and by the way you get to see him next year again. Loyola will be ready you will need your A game Amat Lancers. The Serra League is 23-5 overall and ranked as the toughest league in all of California, so the Lancers certainly have their work cut out for them each and every week. Loyola's unexpected loss to Alemeny really hurts the Cubs wild-card chances, but, guaranteed, nobody is striving for that spot - they want to get in the top two. However, for the 3rd place team in the Serra League to not get the at-large berth, some unexpected things would have to happen in the other leagues.

The Moore League, while they have the top team in LB Poly will not get their 4th place team. Same with the Sunset league - a couple top teams but not four teams deep. In the South Coast League, Capo Valley or Dana Hills would have to sneak past Mission Viejo, Tesoro, or San Clemente making one of them a potential wild-card - but then they'd have to have at least 3 losses, barring some weird 4 way ties and some "Miramonte-esque" coin flip fiasco. .

Then you're left with the Trinity League. Little JSerra hasn't played a quality schedule and Servite enters League at 4-3 with TWO losses to the Serra league - and that probably eliminates them from wild-card contention. Amat's win over OLu goes a long way in helping the whole Serra league in that comparison and at this point the Serra League being 3-0 vs the Trinity gives any third place team a big edge.

Finally, the CIF knows in the back of their minds that a 4 team league gets screwed-especially when there's an 8 team Moore league without quality depth that has 4 automatic slots. There is talk that there is an "unofficial rotation" and it's simply the Serra leagues "turn" if the W-L numbers justify it. So there's a good chance the 3rd place team will be 8-2 or 7-3 and most assuredly be in a pretty good spot. I was NOT @ the Glendora game Glendora Fan , I was @ RHS vs SEM until about 9:30pm & then off to Arcadia for a cocktail,I did not get to Glendora till around midnight .

If you want to consider the parents in the stands wishing the group of kids who have played together for 4-5 seasons could stay together recruiting then thats your opinion. But KG is an educated, classy man who is realistic enough to know that is just "parent talk" --my son has known where he was going to HS since the 5th grade, there was no pressure or trying to convince him otherwise and honestly, we NEVER got approached about changing his mind. Question my integrity if you want,I know the truth. And yes, we were close to the situation too, sorry your kid wasn't in the "in" side, which I have to question because that class of CV players were all so close, didn't realize there was anyone who felt like an outsider. Sorry you didn't agree with the kids high school hats, you must have not have been there to see how much fun they had with it.

Hey "Montview is a joke" I Don't see you on the Field giving it all you have spending your free time in mentoring these young kids and young teeanages responsiblity and being held acountable for their actions I have coach JAA now high school for a total of 10 years the last eight years in high school. Alot of kids that play for High schools in the montview league and in other SGV Leagues have it tough they must maintain a 2.0 or better G.P.A just like JAA or they can't play sports in H.S. They have only 6 weeks to prove it or they are cut after six weeks and Coaches in High school have to deal with challenges every week because of the enviroments the High school students deal with everyday. Also at the High school level the speed of the game is much faster and the level of being able to out coach the guy across from you is always being challenged. Not to mention contending with ruley Fans. I bet you could not handle coaching at either level. Till you have walked a mile at both level of play and see what the coaches have to do to have a good game plan for their next game and the amount of time and effort that goes into their game plan. Don't knock any Football league. you are only a spector and only can guess were to begin you might think it only about X's and O's and I can tell you you are way OFF!!!!!

Amat beats Loyola whether Barr plays or not. Loyola is one dimensional and Amat has enough horses to stop Barr.

Amat will not beat ND or Crespi and will end up 1-2 in league and I don't think they get the wild card.

To tell you the truth, a player who is in fact, truly injured, really should not be out on the field anyway because all it does, is hurt his teams chances.

Some of you folks may recall the Lakers championship series against the Pistons a few years ago (no, not the one with Phil and Kobe, but in the late 80's), Isaiah Thomas played hurt against the Lakers, and it cost them the championship.

While it was no doubt a valiant try, he ended up hurting their chances more than helping them. Same thing here.

Cal's team continues to improve each week. I don't know whether we belong up with CO, SH & yourself. The next two weeks will determine that for us. If we win the Del Rio with convincing wins over Santa Fe & La Serna, then I believe we may belong.

Reports on sectionsports rival blog states, Star RB Anthony Barr sustains hip injury in first half & does not return for rest of game. Barr rushed for 25 yds on 7 carries all in first half. No mention if he will be available for 1st league game vs Amat.

I'd probably make a horrible coach though since I've missed a few games the last couple of years and spend more time on the blogs than breaking down films and going to practice. You sound close to the situation with the Covina High School situation...Answer this, there was no talk at all with Glaspy or Covina High School people about coming to Covina and playing "staying together"? DUH--of course Covina Vikings belong to Covina High School OR Northview where some of the CV went. Unless you were part of that team, you have NO IDEA the purpose of the hats, the kids had fun with it NEVER did any of us feel like we had to go to CHS, matter of fact, my player isn't there. The entire coaching staff, players and parents showed nothing but class the entire 4 or 5 seasons they played together and have formed a bond that makes playing against each other fun.

How can you even justify the hats being put out at the banquet last year? It was all done for a purpose, to let everyone know that this Covina Vikings program belongs to Covina High and if you don't go there, you're in the minority. Nice gag to do to impressionable 12 year old, 13, 14 year old kids. The most fault of this whole thing goes to Coach Glaspy of Covina who has his hand in Covina Vikings, Covina High School Freshman Football, and the varsity team for influencing these kids to go to Covina. Worst part, what is he selling to these kids? A program that's only been good 2 years out of the last 10 and those were only the McDonough years (who was a stud, but troubled athlete that got away with murder-ask the Covina High teachers). Is it the basketball program, baseball program, wrestling program, etc...can't be those because they're not good either. Ask you this, what would a kid go to Covina for when all the local schools (Charter Oak, South Hills, and Northview) are crushing them in every sport? One reason: Covina Vikings and Coach Glaspy. Who runs a big part of Covina Vikings? Ms. McDonough (former qb's mom) and Glaspy. It's not even known if these kids are supposed to be at the local schools instead, it's about this frosh team being full of kids from all over the SGV. Glaspy, what were the signals you were sending in Friday night to your offense? We SUCK on two?

Duck 13, I wonder why they leave the area you speak of. How many senseless gang killngs of young men and and not to mention young girls last year in Monrovia Oaks city. The parents have brought them to CO for safety and to have a better chance to get noticed. Sounds to me like the parents care about their kids.

Ok my bad, so you're a SH fan. Conrats on your record. Don't get so defensive about your wins though, I've never mentioned ANYTHING about scores. In fact, we share the same mindset about "winning is winning" regardless of scores.

But let's be realistic now. There are NO "tough" leagues in the SGV. Not the Pacific, not the San Antonio, , not the Miramonte, not the VVL, Montview, Alomnt, RHL, etc. BA is the ONLY team in this area who plays in a "tough" league. The Miramonte probably ranks higher than the other leagues because of a really good CO team and BoHi and DR are decent (although watchout for CV and Burroughs in the Pacific too). But all of the leagues are top-heavy. That's reality bro.

Speaking of "funny," did you just mention California as one of the top three teams over Muir. LMAO!!! Don't be ridiculous. Here's the thing many fail to realize. Muir has been competing in the higher divisions for decades. As a small school of about 1200 kids we just didn't have the depth to compete with the likes of Notre Dame, Esperanza, Los Alamitos, Hart, Dominguez, Colony, etc. Teams like Cal, Schurr, and even SH and CO have been playing in the lower divisions for awhile and racking up playoff victories left and right, which is what they should be doing and that's why they've been considered good teams. So when Muir enters this lower divisioin (labeled D7 by Calpreps) many ESGV'ers assume that Muir's playoff difficulties will continue. Simply put....
that will NOT happen now. That's not to say that Muir will win it all or that they are guaranteed a spot in the final, but as long as the Stangs are in this division they will be a MAJOR force, and year in and year out they will be one of the top few teams. Get use to it.

I saw that video a while back and yes I will agree it's sort of an "in your face" video. After watching that video you would think that Amat got blown out. Well, as we all know, Amat won. I don't even need to tell you what they think of the rest of the SGV.

As for Mater Dei, they take conditioning very seriously. Something Amat needs to learn. Need proof? Having a BASEBALL coach teach frosh/soph football conditioning is a joke. His attitude is "let these guys toss around a few weights and were good." There is absolutely no structured regiment.

Has anybody seen South Hills freshman team? All i can say is wow!!! Running score is something crazy like 200 to 15.... And when they played covina in the summer, it was quite embarrassing. SH frosh easily best in the valley!

As far as your comments about Muir, well...it's nothing we haven't heard before. The truth is though, most of the people who attack Muir using non-football related issues are usually people who are afraid to line it up against the Stangs. bishop amat got quite a scare from chaminade last night. it wasn't until the blocked field goal that was run for a touchdown by price that chaminade's momentum seemed to die down. some of that momentum could have been taken from chaminade earlier when johnson intercepted a pass in the endzone, but was called for pass interference. chaminade's offense kept amat's defense off balance and seemingly confused all night. great job by chaminade. but again, good teams find a way to win those kinds of games. bad teams do the opposite. all in all, great effort by both teams. good luck on the rest of the season.

Somebody enlighten me about the breakdown of Covina's freshmen team.

In reference to all the transfers Charter Oak should be called Monrovia Oak because most of their main kids are from Monrovia and last year there name could be Pasadena Oak because they had some Pasadena kids. Look at all the transfers that West Covina got this year. MUIR could be even better if their kids would stay in their district. There already a force that can compete with anyone.

Still think MUIR is the best team in the valley. They have the talent playing good at the right time! There are not alot of teams with that much speed on defense. Damn they play physical.

I have been in the area a loong time and I do not ever recall, ever, seeing that big of a group go to a school as freshamn transfers. Transfers is the key word. Now they wouldn't be transfers if they were legitimately at Covina, would they? I believe it is more schools than northview and charter oak that should be concerned. Coach being the CV coach - and then they all end up at Covina doesn't strike anybody as odd? I thought it was illegal for the coach to have any kind of contact so HOW did all these kids decide to go there? Dummies, if the kids were that good they should have went to a much better school like Charter Oak. There is no comparison. defense didnt lose the game for west covina the defense shut them out the 2nd half.they stopped a team that has been scoring 20 30 40 points against opposing teams. they scored 14 points. defense did a good job not there best but good .on the other hand the offense just couldnt get it together there were definately some mistakes in call playing and decisions by west covina.scoring 7 points wont win any games. score 7 points against nogales and west covina will lose.my props to rowland on there defense.to west covina offense you better wake up.you have great offensive talent but you have to use it right.

2006 CIF-SS DIV ??? Playoffs - Rosemead loses to Saddleback (49-13) despite being co-champs of the MVL.
2007 CIF-SS DIV ??? Playoffs - Rosemead loses to Schurr (27-6)

so do you care to explain to me, why in the last 4 playoff runs for the Panthers, why do they lose in the 1st round? If they are as great as you seem to imply, they shouldn't lose consistently like that and so quickly in the playoffs. Sure they will have the run of the Mission Valley League, but that is it. It's like a kid trying to see how cold the pool water is, and upon 1st touch runs back inside to complain it's too cold to get in the pool.

SEMHS is a JV squad, really, mostly guys moved up from last year, it's no surprise. Offensive and Defensive lines can't hold the line for longer than 2 seconds. If their playbook had more that 6 plays, they would be "contenders" but time after time, the plays are predictable. Honestly - all a team has to do is guard Niko Padilla and Manny Acosta, and you've got SEMHS offense right there. It's pathetic; that's all SEMHS has this year.

I totally agree - El Monte beats SEMHS - then Arroyo beats El Monte..... the MVL is all in favor of Rosemead, while the rest of the league is weak. Mountain View hasn't done squat in years, Gabrielino is still in it's infancy stage for the MVL while Arroyo, EMHS, & SEMHS are complete variables going nowhere.

SGV? Sure, but again, all you have to do is step out of the region - usually for CIF Playoffs, and they stumble just like the rest of the MVL. It's no secret, no one in the MVL can match the other schools until there is some consistency in stopping everyone (and every game) in their path, well there is the 2005 season for RHS, but (as noted above) we know what happened thereafter.

Now that they get the smack down put on them, now the MVL League is weak and you like San Dimas. Make sense the league is weak and SEMHS is 0-2 in the MVL. I guess when you play who you played in pre season it all makes sense. Again Just remember who are the only 2 teams in the MVL with CIF Football titles and the Egales are not one of them. Chaminade is quite a distance from Amat. That would most likely explain the poor turnout on Chaminade's part. There record didn't really help either.

I think Amat nearly succumed to the "USC" syndrome-losing to a team they took lightly.

After the Ayala-DBHS game last night and the glendora game last week... I can't see how Glendora is near as good as everyone says. They let us score 34 points last week and we stuck with them touchdown for touchdown. Ayala held us to zero and I would guess under 100 yards of offense. I'm guessing Ayala will play Chino Hills for the Championship in two weeks.

Rosemead looked very good against a sorry SEM team. All year the talk has been all about the eagles offense. It turns out that Rosemead not only has a good offense but defense as well. The Panthers also have the best kicker in the valley who can bury a team deep. Koffler has these kids taking it one game at a time and I really believe that these kids can beat a team like San Dimas. Notes on Amat

The first thing that struck me att he game last night, was how few people were in the stands for Charmanade.

I actually counted no more than 115 people on thier side of the stadium, along with about 17 folks on the side lines that were not on the football team.

One of the blogers got it right, when he said that Amat played an uninspired game last night, because the game could have gotten away from the Lancers.

This year Amat has Crespi at home and I can't say enough about what a difference, home field can make in this game.

Two years ago, Amat played Crespi pretty good at home but as many of you know, they were really trounced at Pierce college last year.

Anyway, I think that the Crespi game will be for the league title this year because they seem to be playing head and shoulders above everyone else.

Eventhough Notre Dame and Loyola are also very good teams this year, I just feel that it's gonna be between Amat and Crespi, because Crespi's gonna smack Notre Dame next week at home.

WOW Rowland Really came out to play and jumped on a very flat WC bulldog team (probably the best thing to happend to WC was this Kick in the BUTT) I do Question some of the Play calling on WC . When you have the dogs to run the ball just shut up and ram it down their throwts. WC you are not a finnese team. And some of those Seniors have to step it up and play Bulldog Football and stop making stupid mistakes and will the DEF please tackle sombody any body !! please. It seemed really odd that we played a Defensive scheme adaints Rowland that was worried more about the pass and it was the run that killed us. Maybe a 5 man front with some blit's . Everytime we had penetration the Raiders either lost yards or had no gains. I think Rowland is in the driver seat to take the SAL , and plaese all you SH fans the toughest part of the schedule is coming up for you. Lets see what you got. you can not sit back and wait for the bulldogs at the end of the year, Walnut and Rowland are good. Like I said Maybe this was a blessing in desguise losing to Rowland. Muir had the Mustangs off and running!!! Some of their best players didn't even play and they man handled Arcadia! Some of the hits they put on Arcadia were absolutely brutal!!! Miles Campbell, Mitchell Gardner, and Ruben Thomas were the "greatest show on turf". Arcadia's field turf that is. They were focused and intense the whole game. Watch out Charter Oak and South Hills. You haven't seen speed like this. Muir's line looked good as well. That defense comes ready to play and they hit hard. Oaks Christian thought so also! Arcadia tried to get physical with them and MUIR took it to another level.

Ayala 40 Diamond Bar 0.....What happened??

Amat played uninspiring football during the first half probably because they didn't take a 1-5 Chaminade seriously and the Eagles almost took it the Lancers. The game was tight at 10-7 until the 3rd quarter when a tying field goal was blocked and was returned for a TD by Price...score 17-7. Eagles came back on a 96 yard offensive run and score now at 17-14. Amat finally got serious in the 4th Qtr when the score was 24-21, a TD run by Gaisie and 60 yard reception to Lenhart late in the game finally put the Eagles away.

Hopefully, Amat will take their Serra opponents more seriously next week, because if they play like they did tonight, they will stink up the field.

Ill have you know rowland came to play tonight. My Bulldawgs will be back. They have a good team. Those boys can scrap. They Beat My dawgs. Straight up. They were the better football team tonight.

Glendora 17 Damien 14

The big difference? BJ Gonzalez. If he was playing for Damien the Spartans win. He basically led Glendora to the win with several big catches. Andre Holmes and Aaron Stockham also made big plays.

The other difference? Damien playcalling. What a joke that was. In the 2nd half with Damien holding a 14-3 lead, Glendora hits a big play on the opening drive (Kaluzny to BJ) to make it 14-9 (XP was shanked)

Damien was running the ball well all night. Of course that means Morrison calls for a pass that was intercepted.

Damiens D holds Glendora and gets the ball back.

After a Spartan punt, Glendora got conservative and Holmes led them down field with several tough runs. Kaluzny to Stockham for a TD and a 2 pt pass to BJ makes it 17-14.

Damien gets the ball and led by QB Ethan Betance, they begin pounding the ball right at the Tartan D for big chunks of yards.

Damien is closing in for a go ahead score, when Morrison starts calling pass plays again. BAD IDEA!

Turnover on downs leads to a long Tartan drive and an attempt to end the game but DHS gets the ball back with 30 sec left. After 2 passes put Damien in FG range, Morrison decides to go for it and they attempt a pass to Herrera through double coverage. The ball hits the ground and the Tartan fans chant "IT'S ALL OVER!"

Damien showed heart and played well enough to win. With the proper game plan (or a 6-4 WR) they probably win.

Props to Glendora. They made the plays when they had to.

lost track after RHS kept pounding away. Escamilla needs to either fire the defensive coach or the offensive coach. Both coaches looked to have had "brain hemorrages" in there gameplay abilities (or the lack thereof).

SEMHS has and will continue to have NO DEFENSE. It's not their year anymore, that's up to El Monte, Rosemead (should be the MVL champs).

Interesting fact towards the end of the game, some white boy jerk from Rosemead kept walking in front of the SEMHS crowd (between the fence of the track and field and the 1st row railings of the visitor seats) trying to "walk it and talk it" (referring to the grand whooping we got).

People sneered at him, so what does he do? Comes up the side staircase (near the visitor snack bar) and tries to further anger the SEMHS crowd. [By the way, at this point, it was just him and 3 girls] so a couple of hot-headed SEM fans, dudes probably just out of high school - at least I know they're not current attendees - they confront this prick and tell him to leave back to his side.

He raises his hands like he can just do as he pleases (considering the score), so some parents start to yell at him to get to his side. As words got heated, he decided to spit into the crowd of young guys in front of him. Out of nowhere comes a NICE right hook to his jaw and promptly knocks his a** to the floor.

rowland over wesco omg the san antonio league is weak i seen rowland play and was not very impressed but ill give you credit good luck the rest of the way.

I feel bad for Wilson, Gilmore and their 2nd best player both go knocked out of the game in the 1st half. The 2nd half co agreed to a running clock and played the whole team, I have not seen that on the varsity level before. We had our 1st team punt return in in the 2nd half and it went for a TD. Wilson is waaaaaaaay down so dont hit them to hard. I dont think you can put all the blame on the coach, its just one of those years when the overall talent is lacking. Not trying to bash the young men.

What happened,
Came back from the WC vs Rowland game. Rowland throughly handed WC their butts. Everyone predicted WC beating Rowland, talking about the upset of the night.

I think I can shed a little light on this for you Joe.

Like many of us who played ball in the late 60's and 70's, Wilbur Hackett Jr, (the guy in the video), was warned about flashbacks which could happen at any time.

Hackett was simply having a flashback of the linebacker variety,(he was a LB at Kentucky from 67 to 70), something that has happened to me personally.

Perfectly understandable. Just those whack(y) 60's coming back to haunt you.

Too funny. The ref got caught in a "football moment", like some one said earlier, had a flashback of his days as a football player and reacted. Just like a Vietnam vet would dive under their beds when they hear thunder lightning.

That ref looks familiar. I think he worked a few Northview games.

That's why coaches have problems with you guys. Most of you can NEVER admit you made a damn mistake or worse - you have your buddies back and put every official on that infallible pedestal and make up some procedural thing that CYA!.

Watch the replay again and LOOK at his eyes GLUED to the ballcarrier (which is what he was watching). He started on the hashmarks and ended up 5 yds outside to make the hit. Then his final 2 shuffle steps to move to his right, break down and make the hit.

I saw it on Saturday and the guy should be fired. Take a look at this video .

The ref was on the 2 yd line and the QB was on the 9 when he chose to bounce outside. At that point the official has a TON of space to the inside to slide into and allow the play to go to his outside.The QB takes FOUR strides and the ref breaks down with him ... stride for stride! He has SEVEN yards to get outta the way! There is NO other way to explain or justify that.

Go to :50 seconds left in the video and freeze it. At that point look at his space - the has some choices - and he CHOOSES to break down, track the ballcarrier and impede his progress. PERIOD. Even in the final two strides he has a chance to slide to his left an bypass all contact.

After watching this tell me if you read and evaluate his actions the same way. If so - I'd "red-line" you too!

As a football official myself, I can understand this action. Officials are taught to protect themselves. Primarily, it means staying out of the action, but sometimes you get rolled up in it. This is especially true for the umpire. As for watching the ball carrier, he's a D-1 official, who knows his job, which is "Do not be a ball watcher!" He undoubtedly was avoiding getting rolled up in the blocking (which is what he was watching) and put himself right in the path of the ball carrier. The camera angle and slow motion replay make it look worse than it is. He may get dinged in his game rating, but that's it.
