The Scouting Guru tackles tough questions
The Scouting Guru has been all over the San Gabriel Valley and beyond, and like always, he's offered to share his thoughts, free of charge. Don't hate, enjoy it for what it's worth, which is one man's opinion on the talent in the San Gabriel Valley. In this thread he answers readers' questions

Wow, I asked for questions...and for the most part, the readers have answered. And noticed that for the real stupid questions, we moved on. So we'll call this the Friday Morning Huddle. And before I begin, for those that say that I don't leave the East SGV, I hope to see you all at the Redlands East Valley vs. AB Miller game this Friday, or the Corona Centennial vs. Corona Santiago game next Friday.
Also, we had a chance to finally pop in the tape and watch Walnut's Leonard Rhodes. After watching game after game on him, I am convinced that he is a true college fullback. My major concern with him is his speed. Especially if he wants to be a Tight End in college. He runs average routes and just doesn't have that breakaway speed that you are looking for. Hopefully, he'll find a way to work on his speed in the off-season. But he is a D-1 prospect...no question about it.
Now to your questions and my answers, click thread
ADAM IS THE MAN...IN MORE WAYS THAT ONE
COHS Football asks: Hey scouting guru, I enjoy reading your posts keep it up, and what do you think about Adam Muema of Charter Oak? I think he's got a shot at the next level?
Can't believe it. My first ever question comes from a CO Fan...I love the passion of the Charger fans and I hope that you'll pull me over in a couple of weeks when I go to your game against Bonita. If the SH fans can buy me my snack at their game, so can the CO fans...just kidding, of course. In answering your question, I love Muema. Some schools will take a pass on him because of his height, but this is a football player. We can easily envision him getting an offer in the spring of next year. He has very good junior tape.
GIVE THE BIG GUYS SOME LOVE!
COJO points out: Guru, Allen is not the only prospect. Also you don't seem to think much of Charger O-line. Look at the bookend anchors on D-line Perri #18 and Williams #56. These two are a Q-backs bad dream. I bet their stats are as good if not better than any team in the Miramonte League.
COJO, love the screen name. Perri is a player that we like quite a bit. He had a really good game against Rancho Cucamonga. Cal Lutheran is one of our schools that pays for our stuff and we are making a huge push for him along with several other players. He would fit in nicely. Williams is another kid that has caught our eye on film. We just need to watch more film of him.
CHARACTER COUNTS IN THIS GAME
Just Wondering asks: Guru, I have a question for you. Do scouts pay a lot of attention to the nature of a prospects family life. We've seen some kids come out of the SGV with mad skills but really sketchy home lives. Could a youngster's family life limit his chances at attention from colleges? It seems to me that (with the exception of Fresno State and the Dallas Cowboys) sports teams have become more and more concerned with the PR exposure from players who are problematic.
This is kind of a tricky question. Some coaches take a look at the family life of a prospect, but it's not that big an issue as compared to a college prospect trying out for an NFL team. If you have a chance, go to a bookstore and try to find a book called "The Draft." It talks about the road many college prospects have to take to get drafted and how much character is looked at with college prospects. It's a great read. Anyway, many college coaches will look at the problems that a kid may have and say that once he enters a stable environment of a life at a university, he'll take a turn for the better. And there are some schools that will not take a chance on that. It just depends on the school in question. The bottom line is, if the player can play at a really high level on the football field, college teams, more times than not, are going to take a chance on the kid.
MORE SAN DIMAS QUESTIONS.
Just Wondering also asks: Mr. Guru - I've enjoyed reading your input here on the blog. Last week you mentioned Cwantas Brown and this week a few words about Kyle Salm. There are several other prospects at San Dimas and I'd love to hear you 10 cents worth...Nico Barbone - RB/DB, Ryan Doll - Line, Garrett Smith - Line and Daniel Joseph - RB/DB. Joseph has great speed but might be a little undersized. Barbone has great size, he hits really hard, and has great heart but might be a step slow. Doll hits like a train but might be a little undersized (maybe 6-1 and 220). Smith has great height (6-5 I think) but might be a little light (250 or so). I've really enjoyed watching these guys play this season and what they're accomplishing this season is remarkable. They are fine players and I wonder what you think their prowess might be at the next level. Thanks again for your thoughts... I enjoy reading them!
You are right when it comes to your assessment of the SD players, they play hard for one of the under appreciated head coaches in the area in Billy Zernikow. Garrett Smith is nice player, but just with Salm, I would like for him to be more physical. Nice player though. Ryan Doll is another nice HS player, but he would be a great player for APU. Size is going to stop a lot of coaches on Joseph, but he moves well on the field. As for Barbone, I think he's going to be a first-team all-area selection. He'll definitely be a first team All-CIF selection. But, he's a little undersized for big time football. Now, if he wants to walk-on at a D-1 school, he gets our highest recommendation. He works really hard and plays his heart out. He would make a terrific player over at a Cal Lutheran and he would hit the field, right away. Too bad is not 6-3!
YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH.
Trevino says: Guru, keep up the good work. Some people can't handle the truth. Not every athlete is meant to play Division 1 ball.
Thanks for the Jack Nicholson line. Trevino...I've heard that name before!!!!
WHO IS THAT COVINA PLAYER?
Yo asks: You said with the exception of San Dimas and Covina... What Covina player do you refer to?
Some colleges are evaluating offensive left tackle Greg Reid. He's a good player, but another that needs to be a bit more physical.
I MUST HAVE GOTTEN INTO THE WRONG BUSINESS.
The Guru Himself adds: Mr. "GURU" -- I can pick way more players out of the SGV then you have. You're not even a real GURU you &*^ face you're not even a real scout you're an assistant coach for SHHS. . .stop fooling yourself and the Valley please Thanks
Hey, I love competition so if you can pick out the players better than we can, start hitting the streets and find the players. And if I'm an assistant coach at South Hills, then I must be doing a lousy job because we've been in attendance for only two games this year and one of them was with an assistant coach at Washington State. My days as an assistant coach are long gone! Thanks for your concern though.
AT LEAST SOMEONE IS ON OUR SIDE
RADIO says: Man your a cool dude, don't let all of these people side track the good your doing for Cameron Deen, and others across this valley. You are a very genuine person and you do make a difference, Take care and keep chest bumpin always. GO DAWGS!
Thanks for the kind words. My chest bumpin days are over with. But they were fun while it lasted.
UNDERCLASSMEN...ALREADY?
LUTHERAN ASKS: Guru, When you say underclassmen in the area, do you mean from Frosh-Jr? Or Soph/Juniors?
We are usually talking about sophomores and Juniors. But, if you feel like there are certain freshman that are looking good, drop me a line and I will take a look at those kids this summer. Thanks for the question.
THE PROBLEMS AT DAMIEN
Damien Dad asks: Guru, what do you think about what's going on over at Damien, we have all the talent in world and can't win a game. Lot's of parents talking about Morrison, they want him out. He's been in the HOT seat for a couple of years now but this year he's showing us that he crumbles under pressure, does NOT make any adjustments, and is a horrible leader, he needs to go.
Ok, I have waited until the appropriate time to address this issue. I had a chance this fall to take in a practice over at Damien and I will tell you that coach Morrison does a great job and those kids are getting good coaching. They were more than hospitable when I visited their practice and I will be making it out there in the next couple of weeks. Sometimes, there are years when the breaks don't go your way. And that has been the issue over at Damien this year. Everything that could go wrong has gone wrong down there. It's one of those years. You must remember, this is a team that had a great year last year and made the playoffs. Trust me when I tell you, if the parents can be just a little bit patient and give Coach Morrison and his staff time, they will get the ship rolling in the right direction and Damien fans will be able to cheer on their team with pride. You can say the same thing over at Los Altos. We are in a society these days when people want to win now. What people don't realize is that coaches that coach at this level are making a huge impact on the lives of these players at such a young age. If the players just trust the coaching and the parents give coach Morrison the support he needs, things will be markedly better. I wish Coach Morrison and the rest of the staff the best of luck the rest of the season.
GURU JOKE ASKS: Hey Guru -Would you like to sport a Washington State sweat shirt or Princeton? My bet, is that some kids you have no idea about pick the academics first and not the Pac 10. Time to get out of your shell, because you're wrong on some of these so-called small tier schools. It's about academics first, but we all know you skipped that area in your life.
I didn't know that my fashion apparel would be the talk of the Valley. Well, you can spot me with a Villanova coaching polo shirt at the AB Miller vs. Redlands East Valley game Friday. I'll let you know what I'll wear at the Centennial vs. Santiago game next week. Oh and next time, edit your posts. Thanks!
SUPPORT THE LOCAL PLAYERS ASKED: "Guru" why don't you research and provide all the High Camp information on the blog to help out. Rivals.com (contain NIKE HS combine) and camp information, scout.com, and there is a freshman/Soph Camp for early exposure.
We will be more than happy to give all the information for the combines and camps. One thing to keep in mind, the Nike Combine is open to all underclassmen while the Nike and scout.com camps are invite only. Thanks for the question.
I hope to see you all at the Bishop Amat vs Loyola game Saturday night.

its nice to see how people defend the fabulous coaching of morrison. has anyone been watching the same games iv been watching? over and over i have seen the dumbest plays been called. yes damien really does have players..they might not have a lot of division 1 players but they have the players to be better than 1-7. there losses should have been to bosco and amat but no one else. even the amat game they had many chances. the lack of coaching has made this team suffer they ugly losses. for the 3 seniors who walked (gus flores, nick sale, alex gomez) these were all starters!! how bad is it when you have 3 great players walk. gomez and sale were amazing defensive players but did not get the chance to show their abilities. what a waste! i could have seen sale playing at a small division 1 school..maybe a team in the WAC conference. oh well. wish the best for these seniors

Stay on this loser butt until he comes clean.
I can't believe you have held back this long. I know, he'll bury himself.
The boys at the track are thinking of coming to a game real soon! It will be a real home coming, if you get my drift....
What do you think?
shhs-come up with a different drum to beat and get a new schtick
cohs,
Having never seen Rufus, or any of the other CO players for that matter, I can't say for certain that Rufus is THE BEST athlete at CO....but he's got to be in the top three. I say so because two years ago former PSN prep sports editor Scott Galletti wrote an article about two "future" freshman QB's that hadn't even stepped foot on a high school campus.....Dennis Rufus (at Muir at the time) and Josiah Thropay (at Monrovia at the time).
According to Galetti, Rufus put on one hell of a display in passing league vs. Hart in leading Muir to an impressive victory over the Indians. Now of course it was only a passing league game, but the fact that a kid who had just graduated from 8th grade helped beat one of the "power" schools was DAMN impressive. Unfortunately for the Stangs, Rufus decided to go elsewhere even before school started and Thropay's journey has been well documented by the Trib.
Suffice it to say, Rufus is a GREAT talent!!!
Whats your take on dennis rufus the young sophmore stud that plays corner/receiver for the chargers? some are saying he's going to be better than will harris that is still playing ball for USC right now.
sgv scouting
make sure to answer all the questions James. Go back and read or did your mommy forget to teach you that.
Been to the track lately?
I love the questions...keep them coming and I will answer some on Wednesday and Friday.
GURU:
DO YOU KNOW WHO HAS THE MOST LEADING QUARTERBACK SACKS OF ALL THE (7) LEAGUES IN THE VALLEY!
AZUSA, #47, ARCEO, HAS (10) SACKS!
what,about..."special-teams"[co]
CO JO im a san grabiel fan im not saying one is better then the other. peri and williams are great football players
but peri leads that defense.
who does CO play week 9 and 10?
COJO-did you say he picks his nose?
just lettin you know bronze withem also is in top ten in tackles in the state and was named conference player of the week his first start
I find it amazing that Damien fans believe that this team has talent that could actually compete. Sorry to hurt people's feelings but that team has limited talent and limited coaching. And for those backing Morrison, you may mean well but you know in the back of your head how bad he and that staff is. Don't throw names out there like McMahon and Harper because both of them had to walk on at USC without Morrison. And both of them will amount to garbage time after SC blows out teams in the future. And I laugh at the names users drop from the current team mainly because they are nothing special either. None of them will go anywhere after this year. Why can't people just acceot the fact that the team in horrible along with the coaching. Why is that so hard to understand
CO fan, PLEASE NOTE wILLIAMS WENT BOTH WAYS IN AT LEAST TWO GAMES COVERING FOR INJURED O TKL. HE ALSO OFTEN GOES AT NOSE.HE HAS PICK AT NOSE.
Don
You make some very good points. Not every athlete has to be the Prototype Pac-10 or SEC player.
For me the main goal is academics first. Football being the way to get a great education, while having some great college fun along the way.
I know of two kids at Bonita, two kids at SD, and two kids at Damien getting the non-tradition D1 attention. Very good student/athletes that would fit nicely into the programs of interest.
Good luck to all the kids that may get the chance. Keep working hard, because good things do come to toughs that don’t give up!
COJO! the reason williams has the stats over peri because peri is going both ways i see him on offense for the chargers !
on total carrer stats peri has williams they both are the 2 best d line men in the valley.
why is co still second in the southeast divison fred?? with allen rycraw an the rest of the undefeated chargers.

Guess what, the royal darkness will win next Tuesday. Count on it!

Love your posts! I would love to see him answer your questions too!
Hey Ex-Damien player...why are kids quitting the team? 3 seniors walked this week.

As much as he tried...Frank the A$$ just couldn't refrain from the boards and his beloved Damien. There is nothing in that comment that even says it was aimed at you, what a self centered moron you must be. I know you will retort to this comment with another clever yet predictable comment so just save the carple tunnel enhancement for another time. Dear ol Frank, you must be going as a Loyal father and fan this Halloween. Laughing at you and the green paint on your car.
SGVFootballFan ,
That's awesome info. It's nice to get an update on kids at the JC's
You need a weekly "JC Update" post
Thanks!
Support the local players,
I know Fred might not want to advertise it here but there is a place to check out what some of the local players are doing.

Hi COJO,
I agree Evan and Tyler are among the very best D Linemen in the Miramonte, and by implication, the best in the area. They have gotten bigger, stronger and faster every year I've seen them play. Can they play “at the next level”? I think so; and while they might not be the prototype size/speed wise for a Pac 10 or SEC school, there is plenty of non prime-time football being played all over the country. (Some kids actually get financial assistance at smaller schools, too.)
We know the C O families from our BB days across the street. The guys mentioned above along with guys like Chris, Patrick, Daniel, Dillon, Clapper, and probably a dozen more who don't come immediately to mind all played about the same time. Good times. Good kids.
Guru, I looked up Charger stats on MAX PREP. It appears Williams D end is leading the team on tackles and sacks and is 4th in league, time to take another look. Not knocking Peri he is quality player who can play above high school level.
HEY barack O, It is a shame when someone puts a lot of time into projects as the Guru does that if you disagree you get nasty.
Get a life and try to act grownup.
Guru
Is it possible for you to track and update some or all of the College players from the San Gabriel Valley so the area folks can continue to support them ????
Guru,
How about some simple lists for the teams here in the SGV only... Considering this current senior class only, who are the...
Top 5 Running Backs
Top 5 Defensive Linemen
Top 5 Offensive Linemen
Top 5 Defensive Backs
Top 5 Quarterbacks
Top 5 Wide Receivers
I realize you look at talent all over the place... but this is a SGV blog and it will be interesting to see how you fill these lists up with just the local kids.
Also, I wrote a post a few days ago encouraging parents, players, and even coaches to be realistic in their expectations regarding D-1 recruiting and a possible scholarship to play football. I played football in college a thousand years ago, back when there were only two or three scholarship players on the entire team. Today, while there are more scholarship dollars available, securing those dollars has become infinately difficult due to the very high level of competition. So the question is this... in you experience, given a thousand prospects (strong, moderate, and even weak talent)... what percentage of players might expect to receive a college scholarship?
Thanks again for your input... I don't always agree, but I love the fact that you are passionate about what you're doing and I love to read your thoughts!
SHHS I hope to G Almighty someone pulls the plug on you and you be exposed for who, what you really are, your royal darkness!
Guru,
How about any of the linebackers at Northview getting any attention. Have you seen any tape or heard anything. Just curious.
Yo franky
I thought you were not going to comment on Damien anymore per your post last night? That lasted all of one day? lol too funny
Corona you're an idiot...stop posting...the whole world doesn't revolve around you...go watch a debate or something
Old Spartan Player.
Love the venom but you got the wrong Damien Dad. Seems you should have just directed the comments accordingly.
But thanks for thinking about me.
It's too bad you think, or anyone else thinks, parents are the reason for your record. BUt then again that's why most play.
I appreciate your love for Coach Mo and your sense that's he knows football but didn't you commit the same sin you accuse others of by "suggesting" Morrison WOULDN'T know they were DOUBLING TAYLOR?
As in "IF I WERE THE COACH"...are you getteing INVOLVED as well?
Either way it wasn't me that asked that question for Guru.
But I have a quick question for you. "IF" I were a FORMER player "I" wouldn't come on a blog ANONYMOUSLY...especially to DEFEND MY COACH....and talk out of both sides of my mouth and play the blame game.
Parents don't play DEFEBSE or SCORE TDS. Good luck in college son. Unless you haven't heard this "ISSUE" is OVER.
Best of luck....but you can always give CHECKINGIN the business or FRED ...he has Damien RANKED 17 in his latest polll....DUHHHHHHH!
jcaz
Just laughin my a-- off!
Great post!
WHHOOO! Old Spartan Player? You do know whatsup. coach Morrison is a great coach, its just a instant gratification mentality and the parent's cancerous attitude that holds Damien back.
Scouting guru what about the talent at Damien such as Brian Martin # 58, Chase Sippel # 64, Jake Salter # 77, WR's Dominguez and Morrison, Punter Betance, and SS Rodney Matthews.
Martin is a big junior at 6'3 and is playing good football at guard. I've watched Sipple play virtually every position at OL this season and dominate. This kid is special talent. Morrison is a tough reciever who doesn't drop the ball and Dominguez is a helluva athlete who can jump outta gyms to catch a pass. Betance is possibly the best HS punter I've seen and I know he's getting major D-1 recognition, he's also a winner at QB. Finally Matthews is a smart safety who always comes through.
Just wondering if you could or have watched tape on any of these players and if you would agree on them/what you would think.
I am just guessing here, but maybe the reason you don't hear to much from the Amat crowd is because they do not hold you in as high esteem as some of the other folks in this blog.
Or maybe it's because allot of their blogers have come down hard on you as of late, for some of you're recent, silly azz comments.
Or maybe it's because some of those same comments that you have made about the Amat (potential) D1 players, were so compleatly out in left field, that it made people laugh at you.
Or maybe it's because of the crack about Amat traveling outside of thier area to play better talent, only to have to suffer "a long bus ride home from the IE."
Or maybe it's because allot of the Amat faitfull really don't think you know what you're talking about.
Or maybe it's because...
You get the picture.
Keep the questions coming...I will have another Friday morning Huddle posted next Thursday.
One question...where are all the Amat fans? I hear a lot of CO questions, SD questions, SH questions (Good to hear that some really liked the worked I did at SH), but no BA fans.
Hopefully, you'll pull me over at the game Saturday...BTW, for the people that are keeping track, I will be wearing my Oregon coaches polo.
lets jump on zernicows jock he is a fraud get over it
Hey Damien DAD I got the answer for you why damien does so bad, its because of parents like you. You guys keep harrasing Morrison and you guys get into the minds of the players that he doesn't know what he is talking about, and just to let you know he does he was captain of the last CIF football champions for Damien and played college ball so from this I guessing he knows some stuff about how to play football. For the talent part, he is the reason why damien has the talent though his tough workout programs which made all the players stronger and faster then they ever been before. Heck during my senior year the team improve so much that college coaches were coming just to watch us, which inculded Pete Carrol from USC. So again he must know nothing from your point of view. Yet, the sad thing is even with the players getting attention from D-1 schools because of Morrison, Parent's like you start getting in the heads of the players and make them think that they alreay pro athletes. You start saying that they don't need the coach anymore and that they can get to the next level themselves. A perfect example last year's John Rabe his junior year he made 1st team and got a D-1 scholarship to Oregon with the help of Morrison. His senior year people got to him, start saying that he was set for college and that the coach doesn't know what he is talking about, what happen he lost his D-1 scholarship and is lucky to still play ball where I believe its Nevada. For the players that did listen look where they are at. An example, look at USC you have Daniel Harper(who I got to see personaly play in the Oregon game) and Ryan McMahon. So again, Morrison doesn't know what he is talking about. Wow!!!
Let me say he is doing a good job and heck the Guru can see that, if you want to help the team stay away from the practice field and support the team on Fridays because thats what a parent is suppose to do support the players and to not be the coach or their advisor for college. Thanks
P.S.
If I was the coach I would know that Taylor Herrera is good and would be double covered by the opposite team most of the time, so a 2nd option doesn't hurt and trust me number 11 is not a bad option. Again stay away from the field and support the team and Friday's.

Damien dad,
I've got to agree with your post. Morrison's been there 5 years now, and for them to get "jobbed" each week signifies a lack of leadership.
Give a solid coach 5 years to build a program, and while they won't got undefeated each year, they most certainly would be competitive. As of now, the Spartans don't seem to approach the game with the needed intensity and confidence a quality coach would exemplify.
One more year of this, and it will take quite a while to get out from it.
Guru Please !
How much time do we need to give Morrison ? he's been with us for years and should have already established himself as a leader and a winning coach. He's playing favorites and parents are starting to notice. There's NO way #11 (his kid) should be involve more than Taylor Herrera in the game plan. Not just that, believe me (you said you attended one practice) you should be there more often, he's doing a horrible job of running the entire football program. Morrison is a great guy, just not a good coach. Damien needs a top-notch coach to match the talent we have, we need someone to be discipline and hard-nose to take our program in the right direction. GO SPARTANS.
I think I'm gonna puke!!!!!!
What do you think of the kid from john muir ? the qb/db/rb/kicker/and everything else
Hey Guru,
With the great season they're having so far, can you provide some outlooks on the Rowland Raiders. They have some Sr.'s that really need to be looked at ( Wallenberger, BJ, Stansell, Allen, Davis ) from your view, what are the chances of seeing them at the next level??
SHHS-it seems to me that you have some animosity over the Dorian Wells deal?

Hey DON!!!!!
Don u seem to know alot about Charger players, seems u coached them in JJA What about Williams and Peri? They progressed from very good to super good. 1st team Miramonte, 1st and 2nd SW Div in2007. I think they are way better this year. What say you?
Reality
Since you dont know, let me help you. Its the other way around.
Still waiting James!
Guru,
curious about a sophomore at DBHS. Jason Kimsey, has started 5 of 7 games at WSide LB as a sophomore. Getting tackles and plays on all special teams so only leaves the field when offense plays. Ever heard of him? Is he getting lost at DBHS? Good job, keep up the good work. The people who only have negative comments are probably frustrated with their own players. Any visibility on any program is a positive. Thanks for caring.
SHHS,
Stop hating on the GURU, it sounds like you have something to say to him and don't have the guts to tell him in person. Continute to read his comments and you might learn something!
I will see you at the Miller v Redlands East Valley Game. It should be a dandy. They are both fast, and have great athletes. Miller is undefeated on their new field.
man i hate all these damn hecklers in the stands at CDF! Bogan and their staff have more than proven themselves over the years. its your kids that cant carry the load of the program! get over it your kids aint that good! dont point at Bogan, point at your kid whos not good enough
The "Guru" himself knows who "SHHS" is and I would hazard to say so does Bogan but yet they continue to tolerate both father and son!
Come clean James! Your chest pumpin days may be over, but not the lies.
I am John Mccain and I approve this message..
SHHS-why are you so angry? maybe that is the really tough question.
I WONDER WHY JAMES WEARS THE VILLANOVA POLO?
JAMES, YOU'RE STILL ON THE WEST SIDE OF BARRANCA.

GET MORE FACTS AND THE GREEN MIGHT INCREASE.
COLLEGES ARE CALLING SOME AND YOU'RE MISSING THE INFO DUE TO BAD RELATIONSHIPS. BOGAN DIDNT TEACH YOU THE ROPES BEFORE THE OFFICE SAID - OUT JAMES!
I KNOW YOU LIKE THE GREEN BACKS. TRACK GUYS ARE STILL WAITING TOO!
