Thursday Night Showdowns: San Dimas, Glendora survive scare

| | Comments (76) |

Thursday's Recaps:
San Dimas 35, Covina 34:
Nico Barbone rushed for 168 yards and Daniel Joseph had 88 and two TDs for the Saints, who withstood a scare from Covina.
Covina, getting nearly 400 yards total offense from quarterback Jacob Olivas controlled the game early, taking a 7-0 lead on its opening possession before a Mike Kalmar TD pass and a 20-yard run by Joseph gave the Saints a 14-7 lead in the third quarter.
Olivas then made it 14-14 at halftime following a 43-yard pass to Daniel Marmolejo.
San Dimas took second-half leads of 28-14 and 35-27 before Cawatas Brown intercepted Olivas with 13 seconds left to seal it.
San Dimas coach Bill Zernickow's comments: "Covina came out and played really, really well. They scare me for a lot of different reasons. My fears came true. But our kids played better defense in the second half and we got going offensively. We were able to do it and finish the game.
"I think this is a great lesson. You can take the loss and you can learn a lot from a losses sometimes. But hopefully we don't take this lightly and that we can learn from this and play well the rest of the year."
Covina coach Darryl Thomas' comments: "Our kids did a good job. San Dimas is a good team. We had them on the ropes for a while, but we didn't finish."
Glendora 47, Diamond Bar 34: Glendora High School began the defense of its Sierra League title with a win over Diamond Bar on Thursday night at Citrus College.
Tartans running back Andre Holmes carried the ball 22 times for 175 yards and two touchdowns, but it was his interception with 3:27 left in the game that finally put a stop to the Brahmas' hopes for an upset.
On the preceding series, the Tartans (4-2) were able to controlled the ball for 5 minutes, 8 seconds on a 10-play, 80-yard drive, which was capped by an 8-yard TD run by junior Duwani Bankhead with 5:27 left that gave them a 41-34 lead.
Tartans quarterback Drew Kaluzny hit fullback Chad Young on a short counter pass later in the quarter. Young broke a tackle at the Brahmas 20-yard line and scampered into the end zone to account for the final 47-34 score with 2:26 to go in the game.
Glendora coach Mark Pasquarella's comments: "We had to rely on our offensive line a little bit toward the end. We needed to give our defense a little bit of a breather."
Diamond Bar coach John Martin's comments: "Our kids played a good three-and-a-half quarters. I thought we moved the ball pretty well but our defense has to play better."

TM,

Thank you for the comment about my brother. Unfortunately, my brother has been diagnosed with ALS (Lou Ghereg's Disease). It is by the far the worst disease that I have ever heard of or seen someone live through. He does not have long to live. Is there any way that I could get a hold of your film or a copy? He would love to see it. His name is Jose Rosales. Yes, he had a 3.87 GPA, was editor of the newspaper, and ran a legit 4.5 40 yd dash. He ended up attending St. Mary's college (1AA) and played corner. He is no longer able to speak or care for himself. I love him and miss him dearly. Football changed our lives for the better. I ended up attending Whitter College because of football. Now, I try to change lives the same way my coaches changed mine in the classroom

If any of you wish to know my brother's story let me know. It is one full of tremendous obstacles, challenges, sadness, and eventual triumph.

I don't know why you decided to remove my post.

Was it because Donkey boy cried you a river and you took pity on him ?

Or was it because FC asked you to take pity on the bone head ? not !

Either way, I find it ironic that the jerks who come in here and tear down others are so quick to cry when someone takes them on.

To make it even more funny, you take down my post, yet you let crack heads come in here and say some things about the integrity of high school coaches.

All of them good men.

You allow people to make character assignations, accusing these coaches of everything from stealing money from the coffers of the schools they work in, to out right violations of he law.

You censor my comments about people who are total scum. But they continue to come in here and tear down others (like FC) and you let it happen.

Fred, if you're going to take down comments because you have a personal issue, try to at least play it evenly ok

real quick, its been a problem all year and its not getting better, coach p does not work on tackling at practice, and it shows.

DBT,

To answer your question, "is Glendora better than last year?". I think in some measurable ways, yes, in others, no.
Obvisiously, you can say QB kaluzny is better this year then last year...more experience, growth and confidence. Same goes with RB Holmes.

However, defensively, few starters from last year returned and, come on, last years defense was plain legendary. It will be quite a long time before Glendora regains the the magnitude of experience and talent last years defense brought to the game.

Short answer, I think the Tartan offense appears a little more experienced this year in the impact players, but defensively absolutely no comparison to last years wrecking crew.

we knew this offense was gonna be real good from last year but wow has the defense changed given up that many yards would of never happened last year and the saints better pick it up with stud nico getting banged up a lil bit last night thats y there prob going shells and no i do not think that is a good move at all even it is P Town Look out SAints BP and NV HAVE PRETTY GOOD D AND IT DONT MATTER BOUT THERE OFFENSE CAUSE YOUR D Sucks Saints need LBS from last year

And back to our regular programming...sorry Fred.

still no answer... said:

so, what team were you pretending to coach in your little story?

DBT said:

Ah...my first customer.

is that your point of contention. Do you not think that Glendora is well coached?

Let's say for the sake of discussion that a player believes upon seeing the opposition that the best way to beat a team is to throw deep against a corner that is suseptible to the deep ball.

Monday morning the coaches say we're going to run the ball down their throats. Does the WR volunteer his opinion on the spot, after practice or to his teammates thereby creating doubt?

Maybe that causes problems. Let's say that coaches see as I saw that Horn is the key to beating that defense. Crush him and the team falls apart. Trick him and he falls apart. As great a player as he might be every player has weaknesses. Some teams follow the leader...some teams listen to their coaches. Glendora listens to their coach but depends heavily on their leader. In this case Horn. remember most of DB's runs were up the middle..weren't they?

So what do you do? Have a bunch of kids looking for a game plan as if they have that influence? especially when both teams are one week and 4 weeks away?

Hey that's my opinion. I welcome a different point of view. Part of sharing perspectives. Talking sports. Right?

I thought recently that a corner was suseptible to a double move deep. He was and he bit ...but what I didn't know without looking at film is the great athletism and heart that kid had. He made a diving play to break up the play....a sure TD. Amat #20. Does the double move work to the inside instead of down the line? I still think so. But then again every week a player hopefully improves and every eek the defense hopefully gives you different looks consistent with the players increasing grasp of their assignments amd added responsibilities.

Again coaches tear apart their own team and work on weaknesses that appear one week and disappear the next. Is that not fair to say?

My point is they shouldn't be thinking or scouting anyone but the team in front of them. Why NOT look at Chino Hills film INSTEAD?

We scouted a team once, captains idea---and NOT too happy coaches reaction, and the underdog kicked the crap out of the favorite. The underdog was next. We were scouting the FAVORITE...our nemisis and bitter rivals.

We thought we were in trouble but the coaches saw something early in that game before the game got out of hand. Traps! Counters! Misdirection!

We beat the underdogs soundly running nothing but traps and counters. We all thought, as players, that our only chance was throwing the ball because of our great QB and WRs. Nope. Threw the ball 3 times.

The team in front of you is your problem as a player. Game plans are for coaches. Let's not inflate the kids egos by playing "On Any Given Sunday" just yet. On well coached teams that trust exist. Coaches coach, players play and bloggers blog. The next time I see a blogger catch a TD it'll be the first!

I welcome your honest perspective and measured response. This could be interesting or the usual. Which do you prefer?

I agree with Randy on the observation with coach Martin. He is a proven talent. Its no secret to DB followers and sports gurus all over that have followed the program that the school has always had athletes. After Roche and before Martin it was a dry spell. This is the bottom line on Diamond Bar>> Has plenty of athletes, but with the coaching instability, many of us never see them except maybe track seaon. Martin may finally be the one to get this program back to the pastime!

Good Luck Brahmas!

randy said:

Rudy is giving his all week in and week out, he aint the fastest, he aint the tallest, and he aint the strongest, but he gives his all to that team, to that program and has done so for 4 long years....i couldnt be more proud of my son.....thx for asking!

We would be a solid addition to San Antonio league, but the more i write that on this blog, the further away a drop from the Sierra for us sounds......the league has to let us go and someone has to take us in...and that situation has to work for everyone when CIF gets together to discuss this...so, the more of a pipe dream it seems......If DBHS builds on the momentum as a program that Martin is getting started, then you are right, ballers will come out......this generation of teenagers is not like us, they have so many other options available to them, getting yelled at and suffering in aug may not seem that appealing to them.......what fools they are, for they know not what they missing out on!

Looking forward to seeing you at the Damien game bro! I'm headed to Charter Oak-DR tonight....hell i dont know which team i despise more???.....can you guess?

DBT said:

Randy you should be proud. They played well. Really well. How's your Rudy doing? Good I hope. See you at the Damien game. Always good to see an old friend.

Next year more players will come out. Everyone loves a winner! Should Diamond Bar drop? Sure. But to what league?

Kind of surprising how much better they were from last year. Hey Randy you only need 11 on the field at one time. Besides MORE PLAYING TIME FOR EVERYONE!

What did you think of Glendora? Are they better than last year?

randy said:

DBT,
number one, i don't have it all wrong, i have my finger right on the pulse of what is going on over here :)

We have over 3,000 kids at DBHS, and we have 35 come out for varsity football. Those are facts. We dont have 60-70 kids who have game and come out....we have 35-40 juniors and seniors (a few sophomores too who need the exposure, and a couple who are playing) who come lay it out there for 4 qrts but as you mentioned, we dont have the depth......our lineman bust their asses going both ways for 4 qrts each night, and late in the game they are hurting......one major thing that is killing us this year is not tackling, not wrapping up, there is NO QUIT in these kids but offensive shootouts are probably not gonna work out too well for us all year long.

The school is easily 60-65% asian, and apparently, most of them dont wanna ball.......D RANCH is not predominantly asian....SOUTH HILLS is not, Glendora CERTAINLY isnt, DAMIEN isnt, LOS OSOS isnt,CHARTER OAK isnt, AMAT isnt....i'm not talking crazy here guys, but numbers just dont lie.....things have changed here in DB....the API scores are through the roof, our AP classes rank with Beverly Hills and Palos Verdes......you take the good with the bad.....Coach Martin has been a good hire, and if Glendora is the best in this league, which i thinkn they are, then we obviously showed EVERYONE last night that our kids can play, blow for blow, with anyone in the Sierra league this year...this team is load with seniors who start...this is the year to get back in the playoffs. I still think a drop down would make us more competitive....We only have like 3 juniors and a couple of sophomores who play all game long, next year is gonna be tough, with like 4 returning starters!......No one is more proud of how these kids have progressed these past 4 yrs,...these guys are fighters, and they are showing heart out there every week.....4 more weeks, we need 3 wins to make it back to the playoffs....they are on the right road baby!

As I said earlier, a Thursday night game is great for a football junkie like me, so I decided to go and check out one of the games last night.

I went to the Diamond Bar and Glendora game at Cirtus and I was not disappointed. Here are a few neutral observations.

Citrus college is a nice venue, but if you get up high in the stands, man you might get a nose bleed up there.

The Halftime show was excellent and I truly liked the idea of bringing in some of the local middle schools bands to participate in the show. Whoever thought of that was a genius. Great show and I liked the Scottish uniforms. It all came off really well.

As for the game itself, well I have never before seen either one of the two squads perform before, so I did not have any reservations about either team. However, it did seem to me that Glendora perhaps had the better at the beginning of the night.

The game itself started off kind of slowly. Glendora did not execute very well. For example, there were more than a few over thrown passes, and a couple of blown opportunities that could have allowed Glendora to get out to a big lead early.

Having said that, you nevertheless have to give credit to Diamond Bar, because whenever Glendora scored, those guys just keep coming back at them. The Brahmas gave the Tartans a good game, and for a while there, it almost seemed as if Diamond Bar was going to pull it out.

Over all, a good game because there was allot of scoring. I can't wait for next Thursday !

Coaches do have an impact on how teams play but it's mostly talent and atheltic ability that determines success. Demographics do play into it unless you have a lot a transfers.

What is wrong with letting players scout? I think its a great idea. Imagine what you can in person that you cant see on film. For example a player hustling down field to make a tackle when on film all you see is the ball carrier. Plus in person you focus on just one player all the time ) the one you might be facing in the game) and pick up tendencies or his moves. Nothing wrong with that. Knowledge is power the more you have the more prepared you will be and we all know the key to success in anything in life is knowledge and preparation.

Any Comments said:

Glendora offense definitley carries the game. Tartan Defense lost way to many impact players last year. Chad Young can't do it all by himself.

Last years Great Tartan Defense with this years offense would beat any team in the Valley. Any comments?

Just barely GH said:

Glendora down to the wire with DB?

Thought they were more dominating than that? Looks like defensive needs some work given up 34.

Oh can't wait for next week.

DBT...Drive By Target said:

Diamond Bar/Glendora game was very interesting. Glendora is tough to beat. They just keep coming in waves. The two backs they use are just tough, quick and hit the seams well. Bringing in Young as a lead blocker makes GHS even tougher especially when he's a decoy and QBK pulls it in and runs the other way. Gonzalez is all he's been advertized. 'nuff said. Should be a monster in basketball. What's he going to walk away with 11 or 12 Varsity letters? Much respect.

Glendora's defense is kind of suspect though...at least last night. Not sure what it is or what they are waiting for but the DC sure makes the calls late. Maybe it was just last night but Hirn was looking at teh sidelines ALOT and WAITING for the call. Great fundamentals but I think a No Huddle Offense might really give them problems. I mean DB ran up and down the field. Horn by the way is tough but the sideline to sideline stuff will give him problems. In my opinion. Maybe I'm wrong. He reminds me of Mike Alscott from TB. Straight line BULL!

Diamond Bar is a scrappy team on the rise. No more a Sierra League doormat. They really get after it but depth and experience, or the lack thereof, hurts them. That last INT was just a heart breaker.

Know the situation. Back and forth game, no one open, pull it down and run. Hold on to the ball. Remember you're in 4 down territory now all the way down the field because time is not your friend. Kid had guts all night, as did the rest of the DB players, but that mistake hopefully will never happen again. BIG PROPS TO THE DB O LINE COACH...OUTSTANDING JOB!!! (Hey linemen need LOVE too)

Randy I think you had it wrong all long. Demographics has nothing to do with being successfull in football. Coaching does. Martin is a great hire.

Which brings me to my next point. I see Pasquerella retiring from Glendora. Man has found a home. Great football atmosphere. Great fundamentals and everyone is on the same page. Feels like Midwestern football. I know Glendora ain't Kansas but it sure feels that way. Now why exactly did Damein fire this guy? Players are having fun and getting after it more each game. They might be a powerhouse in this division in a couple of years.

Last point. Always a controverial one to give the drive by artists some work, seeing as they have nothing better to do.

With a 1-4 record and the start of league the next day...WHY would ANYONE go scout the two 'OTHER" teams in your league when you have a undefeated Chino Hills team the next night....and you're in Finals Week at school? Doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Get your rest, think about your assignments and stay on task...CHINO HILS! (shaking my head) FOCUS!

I never wanted my teams to scout the other team. That's the coaches job. Especially when you're well coached. It was almost my position to NOT let my players see the other team. How could it help unless it's a bye week and we're ALL looking and talking about the same thing at the same time.

Maybe I'm wrong but I dont see HOW players scouting FUTURE opponents helps. Seeing Glendora and Diamond Bar go for almost 100 points means what to a player. It's not like it's a bye week an the coaches have given you a game plan or keys to watch for.

We'll see if it has a positive or negative impact tonight and in the coming weeks. (still can't figure that one out)

Finally after 6 years I will finally agree that the Sierra League is tough and well balanced and well coached across the board. Every team I've seen in the Sierra League can win league. FINALLY! This should be an interesting playoff run for everyone.

Mikey any thoughts? Randy? The floor is yours.

Any given game said:

I don’t think it takes rocket scientist to figure out where the Saints need to improve. The offense really is carrying this team, which could pose a problem with better defensive teams. Losing two key guys on defense doesn't help and having to teach the new guys takes time.

One thing for sure, coming off an emotional win of Bonita, shows they were flat in the first half. Happens to the best of teams. There will always be that critic who wants to question a win that may not be “Saint like” or not a big blow out. Guess what folks, one point and it’s a win. Its over and time to get ready for Pomona.

Just have faith and keep working harder to improve 1st half defense. Take one game at a time and don't take anyone for granted.

Anyone else starting to wonder about Glendora. I have seen them play twice now and both times they have pulled some squeakers out. Is it just being lucky or something else. They sure make it interesting kind of like the Angels Frankie Rodriquez when he comes in he always put men on put somehow manages to pull it out somehow. Kind of scarey. A win is a win though no matter how ugly it is.

Just Wondering said:

Nothing...

Jim Brown was a great running back. Fran Tarkington was a great quarterback. Dave Casper was a great tightend... Wake up dude! The Colts played some real physical football last night - no one should take anything from them - the earned a level of respect... However, the Colts at 1-5 and 0-1 in league - that has to change if they want to play in the playoffs this season.

San Dimas played really sloppy. Two fumbles inside the 10 yard line and a dropped pass by #11 with a clear lane to the endzone - maybe 21 lost points on mistakes by the Saints... but I degress - if I'm gonna say the Saints should have scored more then I should allow you to opine about what the 2005-06 Colts could do.

The fact is - none of it matters one bit. The Saints were the better team going into the game and the better team won - not by the margin most expected and not in a fashion they should be proud of (they played really sloppy football) - but they won!

The problem for the Saints is this - there were players and coaches from Pomona High School and Northview High School and they watched as the Covina Colts exploited what looks like a somewhat soft defensive unit at San Dimas - at least in the first half. The Saints had a terrible time controlling the option (sweeps and shuttle pass) employed by West Covina. The Saints will need to shut down the middle of the field more effectively or they will continue to struggle with teams they should beat.

Just got back from the San Dimas vs. Covina game. Covina played like champs! They were physical and seemed to be in the game from the start. In the end the Saints proved to be a little to much, but what a great performance from the Colts. Colts #4 suffered what looked like a season ending injury late in the game - my prayers will be with him for a speedy recovery!

All in all - a pretty sloppy effort from a heavily favored SD team... two fumbles inside the 10 yard line and some serious problems stopping the option plays.

A win is a win - San Dimas 35 to Covina's 27. But like I've said, the Colts were for real tonight!

Please rate my school, my players, my leagues...my son/mijo...my daughter/mija. please oh pretty please! Come on Damn it FRED!!!!! LOL

And then when that list goes up and people have an honest disagreement about the players/coaches on that list, or those that may have been overlooked, it's.... please don't talk about my kid/school/coach/friend/second cousin on my friend's sister's ex boyfriend's side?

I've said it before and I'll say it again. (shaking my head) Why do people even visit this blog if they don't want to talk SPORTS ? Same goes for the others at the next table and the witless led Angels...Mike Scocia still have rings in 2 leagues? What a moron! LOL

Well Fred it was an idea. What ever happened to the Sportwriters Show? Money? Location? Resources? BS? THAT would hav egone over really big. Maybe a year end show to announce the POY....I'll break the bank for the venue. SGV Heisen Trophy-like festivities. Seeing as an Amat guy MIGHT win it ...IT'll be a PACKED HOUSE!

See you at the games. I have the same plan. Saints and "Aint's(DB) no more" two games in one night. Great idea about the Thursday game....that means it probably won't work. LOL

jcaz said:

Thursday night games are a great idea. I for one wish that it would happen more often because as a high school football junkie, I know that I for one would see allot more games.

Case in point. Amat plays games relativly close to Basset, Sierra Vista, Baldin Park and West Covina. Some of the neighborhood kids both attend some of these schools and play on their football squads.

I would very much like to go and see some of thse kids play ball, but it seems that it always has to be a choice between Amat or the others.

The only good thing about this years schedule was that Amat had a bye week, and is also playing a saturday game against Loyola which will makes the opportunity of attending some of these other games much more easier.

A few more thursday night games however, would help even more.

Fred "GURO" or "BURRO"?

Just a joke. Keep up the good work Guru but at least don't start with South Hills all the time. Looks and smells bad.

Best of luck.

What did you think of the DR defenders?

FredJ said:

Maybe, but I don't think Pomona will make the playoffs. San Dimas, Northview and yes, Covina will all get in.

Fred you want some top ten football on a Thursday? See if you can find your way east of the 57 to watch San Dimas vs. Pomona at Pomona District Stadium(Ganesha) next Thursday.

RobertK,

I've been watching the Smudge Pot for many years now. And I have to agree with you. The Saints are better than ever this season and they schooled a really good Bonita, squad. Like you've pointed out, the SD offensive line is remarkable. They're so very good at getting down field. I don't know - they're not huge (except Salm and Smith), they're not really fast - although they do run well, they don't seem to be a lot stronger than the kids on the other side of the line - although the seem strong enough.... It must be coaching or something, because they play hard and push people all over the place.

The Guru himself is having a bad trip alright - if Covina wins (anything is possible, I guess) it would be the biggest upset since... well, maybe ever!

My apologies to the real Guru Sorry

The guro didn't leave that comment, it was an imposter

Robert K said:

Fred,
I didn't think you allowed crack heads on your blogs,
The GURU must be on a couple of week binge, did he not just watch the Saints smash my Bonita Bearcat team, this Bonita team would chew up and spit out Covina. This is the best San Dimas football team in school history. There offensive line could start for Citrus college. You are very amusing though ! Saints 42
Colts 14

the Guru himself,
Wow... that's a pretty bold prediction given all the facts. Of course, they're just facts and should not mean much - right?

You are correct....we shall see! Can you say 1-5?

CO Bro,

Why do they call Charter Oak, "Charter Choke"?

Could it be a history of choking in the playoffs? Yeah, must be huh?

You'll always be seconsd fiddle to Amat in the SGV. And nothing but a speed bump to the OC teams you've faced. Your even second up in your own hometown, nothing but Glendora wanna-bes!

The D-RANCH boys are looking for you, seems like your owed an ass-whuppin'? We shall see.
