Tribskin Pick'em, your predictions and ours

| | Comments (90) |

Steve Ramirez and I will go head-to-head throughout the season, and I will update our records each Monday on the Tribskin Pick'em thread.

Robledo: Last week - 14-4; Season - 119-32
Ramirez: Last week - 14-4; Season - 113-38

Notes: There were only two games that Stevie R., and I both missed, and that's Rowland over West Covina and Arroyo over El Monte. BTW, Who would have thought Arroyo would be 2-0 in the MVL after their horrible preseason? Steve could have picked up ground by taking Bonita over DRanch and Ayala over DBar, who both won. But I broke even by taking Sierra Vista over Bassett and Gabrielino over Mountain View, hence, no blood. Robledo still has a six-game lead and is looking forward to that free meal from Stevie R., at the end of the season.

Next Up: Friday's game of the week is Chino Hills-Glendora, and I don't see anyway the Tarts can pull this out, not the way CHills has been playing of late. South Hills begins a tough stretch against Walnut, Rowland and West Covina. By the way, could next week be any better? Northview-San Dimas (Thurs, Nov. 6); South Hills-Rowland, Bishop Amat-Crespi (Fri, Nov. 7).

This week's games and predictions
Thursday's games

Sorry.... Class of 2009....2008 is the football season. My bad/

Frank Corona said:

Two more weeks and it's over.

I can respect both the tone and the message of your comments. I never said I was an expert. No one is an expert in football. Just look at Joe Paterno learning the Spread at his advanced age. That label was more of a put down by drive by artists and some close "friends"/parents who actually said it on a game film that was passed amoung parents.

The point of my problems the program was the way they treated certain players (very vindictive in my opinion)....and my son in particular. Limiting his play to under 30 plays for 2 seasons was reprehensible. But in the end THAT probably SAVED his life, and started his remarkable relationship with Coach Lucero and the Wrestling Team. So go figure. I owe that one to the Man upstairs.

The other stuff was admittedly my fault for making myself and my family an easy target. I should have just walked away a long time ago but with all that hostility...well I hate to be backed down by hypocrtes. That ,however, does not excuse the viciousness some comments in both directions. For anyone that was offended I sincerely apologize.

Luckily 99.9% of my kids fellow students never mentioned this blog to them. And that's a credit to both them individually and their parents collectively. That's the 99.9% of the great Damien Family that I've come to know and appreciate....and admire

Either way I take your point as it was given. Honestly and without sarcasm. I appreciate that more than you will ever know. KS/BM was right...I did have my epiphany. This is it right here.

This year I just tried to stay positive and give the kids something to shot for ... a Championship. The truth is I really did think this team would win maybe 2 games at most this year. Claremont and maybe Chino. Every other team Damien was scheduled to play seemed stacked or at least farther along in the rebuilding process. Especially with Amat on the schedule I thought this team would break from that beating. Given how much more Amat advanced from the team "Damien beat as freshmen". It would be a shock...and it was!

But you're absolutely right , my friend. Why should I care? Truth is I don't care about high school football as much as people think. I care about players getting hurt and missing a chance to compete to the best of their ability. Look at Amat. No one will tell you they don't compete win or lose. Look at SJB. Loyola and Notre Dame. sound body and Sound Mind....Great Academics and Great Athletics...what's wrong with that? The Greeks had it right. Besides most years Damien size and speed matched up with any of those mentioned schools...so the wheels started rolling. And I got caried away.

Before I came to Damien I'd seen maybe 15 high school games since I graduated 31 years ago. 90% of those my brothers played in or coached. I used to tell my boys that "Football was an a-hole magnet"....becasue it bring sout the worse in people. I guess I was right and should have taken my own advice. Only Zachary played tackle football and that was just to make friends in our new city..go figure?

After this year, when Zach's class graduates I probably won't see another Damien football game. No need really. Of the last 10 Super Bowls I've probably sat thru 2 complete games. This year I haven't seen a collge or pro game front to back. Just got other things to do with 4 kids and THEIR games. Besides as most terrible QBs will tell you hearing knuckheads that never played the game spout off drunk "he sucks" comments never seemed to sit well with me. No appreciation for the sport and it's sacrifies.

Thanks for being honest and breaking it down the way you did. I will be glad when this season is over. Not sure if you're a Damien parent but your points definately hit home with me.

I will sincerely try and finish this season with out commenting on Damien again. Best of luck to the Class of 2008. Sorry for the antics and enjoy what's left of your playing days. Thanks for never making it personal with any of my kids.

Now that was pretty easy after all.

Two More Weeks and Its Over said:

Does it really matter anymore if people post things about Damien and how bad the program is? I don’t know where people get off thinking that the program was prominent in the first place considering that they haven’t won a CIF title since the 70s. Ok, the coaching staff is horrible which can be seen by many and maybe it will get resolved after this season because Morrison can’t honestly believe that what he’s been doing will eventually work. Its time to just step aside or just let him finish next year out until his son graduates.

As for thinking that this team is going to make the playoffs and win a first round game…that’s unbelievably insane. You really have to be on some good stuff to think that’s going to happen, especially when I hate to say that the boys are really not mentally in it anymore. And you really can’t blame them either because there is not much they can do about it. And this is not a dig at the players because they all have certain talents but none of them are exactly prime players. Coaching will take you so far until the lack of football talent catches up and that’s just the truth.

I will be the first one to tell you that the staff should probably walk away after this season. The offense is pretty much a joke and so predictable that Morrison should just signal in the plays to the opposing defense. And for the first time, I have no idea about where the defense is. You have maybe three players this year who play smart and hard while everyone else seems to be lost. The stupidity really showed up in the game against Charter Oak when they left starters in during a blowout and one goes down with an injury. And he shows up the following game and plays hurt, which is the most admirable thing I’ve seen this season.

And Frank… is it really worth it to write here anymore. You have these stories about your life and your family which maybe nice but with all due respect are not necessary. While you may mean good with some of the things you say, why does it matter to you? It would make more sense for you to write about the debate team or something that actually has meaning in your life. Apparently you are retired and that can be a hard transition but there are so many other things that you could be doing instead. Apparently you didn’t even go to school at Damien either, which gives you an even more reason not to worry about the program. All you have to do is worry about the education your kids are receiving, which has been good thus far. Obviously there can be no tone in this message and you can’t fully get this without it coming off strong but take it for what its worth. You are not a coach and you are not an expert. Damien will not make the playoffs and if they were to, there no shot in hell they’d win a first round game. Whatever happen to just being bad…when did that go out the window. That’s great if you want to support the players but you should honestly reevaluate the way you go about it. Do it on a more personal basis instead of here.

It does take talent to win at any level but having a coaching staff in place who knows what they are doing and is utilizing the talent to get the most of out them is just as vital as talent. There are also other big factors like a good admin station, good facilities and well as the most important thing the ability to recruit kids. Also having a winning culture is also huge. Right now it doesn't seem Damien has any of those things and will continue to struggle till changes as made.

As much as I don't care for Amat they are a good example of what happens when changes are done correctly and a good supporting staff is in place. Now if we can just get ride of the donkey fans like Padre Amat would be even a better place. ha ha

Benchwarmer
Frank has a hard time telling the difference between bloggers. He thinks everyone is out to get him instead of understanding a lot of these comments come from many different people. I agree with most of what you said. Well written.

Ughh, Frank, WRONG AGAIN! Spartan Pride and Benchwarmer are not one and the same person. I know this because I am the "real" Benchwarmer. For the record, I have only used Benchwarmer as my handle only to find that someone else is using it too. I haven't been on this sight for three weeks and when I come on it, I see my handle being used. I will agree with you, it is annoying! I am not a lady, or your friend, I have never sat by you or had any personal face to face conversations with you, I did not paint your car "green" (matter of fact, I did not know this even happened to your car until you posted it here on this blog - and for the record, I think it very wrong what was done to you and your car), I did not talk to you about grades and SAT scores, matter of fact I didn't even know you had a son attending USC until you mentioned it in your post to Spartan Pride. But since you do have a son at USC, and I am assuming he is not on the USC Football team, I am "just wondering" if you give your analysis and advice to Pete Carroll on how he should coach his football team. I am also "just wondering" how your advice and analysis is received by the USC coaching staff, players, and alumni?
Your posts about Damien are spiteful and hateful. I don't understand why you send your boys to such an "awful and inferior" school as you claim Damien is. I am also "just wondering" why such a wonderful father like you would allow his sons to be mistreated at school without pulling them out and sending them someplace else where they would be happier. If my boys were being mistreated I'd pull them out in a heartbeat - with all due respect to my ex!

Only one comment. When you are Alumni you have put more than money in the school. You have put your heart and soul into that school so it does give you some say so in the matter, Also there are some of us who send their children to our Alma Mater so we have paid into it. I not sure that sits with others but with Lancers it is fact . Maybe that's what sets Lancers apart from other alumni. I even remember you stating something to that effect concerning Salesian .Example, I think our voices were heard concerning the coaching situation and look where we are at because of those voices. After all, parents come and go but true alumni stay forever.

Hey it's the my lady friend....again.

I remember you. My famous benchwarmer frriend. 'we beat Amat as freshmen"...I looked it up and you said it to me at practice and on this blog before you put paint on my poor man's car...lol....careful about leaving hints about who you are. I got to thinking.....
WHAT KID CARRIES RAH RAH GREEN PAINT IN THEIR CAR?????

THEN IT CAME TO ME....OH SH*T...IT WAS A PARENT!....THAT'S WHEN I REMEMBER GOING TO MY CAR, WHILE IT WAS CLEAN, AND SEEING ONLY PARENTS IN THE SENIOR PARKING LOT. About 25 from what I remember.

See kids don't carry those in their car....wouldn't be cool writing your own RAH RAHs on your car....BUT PARENTS DO! I did back inthe day. Crazy huh?

Funny but the more I think about you the more common you are.

I remember your statement at that practice when we were both sitting TOGETHER!....and you were asking me for the ninth time "EXCUSE ME MR. CORONA...BUT IF IT'S NOT TOO RUDE....(clearing your thoat) ...what was your son's GPA and SAT? Seems my son getting into USC still bothers you. Too bad he just finished his mid terms and ...yup...he's carrying A's again.....must really gall you huuh?

Like I said you're a simpleton from the word Go!

I went to 3 practices maybe 4 and every time I sat with either you or one of the Dads. Always a nice conversation. Even when you were there. Although I will say, and you will concur, that most of what "I" heard wasn't too complimentary of said coaches. Wouldn't you agree? THAT'A WHY I STOPPED GOING......CONSTANT COMPLAINING WHEN ALL THEIR KIDS HAVE DONE FOR FOUR YEARS START! seeing as Zac got sscrewed ...well I don't want to jear about poor coaching and coaches that "aren't up front with kids"! Do these guys even have a sense of history?

As far as going again. You're right I'm not an Alumni...actually I'm a parent. Means I actually PAY and not just ATTEND Damien. while this is your LAST year...booo hoo.

So let me BREAK IT DOWN FOR YOU...WHEN YOU "PAY" YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO EXPECT THINGS TO BE DONE RIGHT. TO VOICE YOUR OPINION ABOUT MATTERS CONCERNING THE SAFETY OF ONE'S CHILD.

When you're an ALUMNI...you've NEVER PAID A DIME TO THE SCHOOL unless you've DONATED MONEY. So put a sock in it already.

As far as the coaches. I talk to Bubba whenever I see him.. Great guy. Ask him what I told him before the Amat game as warmups began. Opps you don't know him...Too bad. Great guy. He's a keeper.

Morrison. Great family guy. What more needs to be said. Coaching is a profession.

As far as the kids laughing at me. Really? That explains your parenting skills more than anything else. Don't you think? besides every time I talk to kids it's always positive. Those that don't talk to me at least are polite and respectful that I'm a parent and Zachary's dad. That's enough for well mannered kids. See my kids. Nice huh?

Do I work? "From what I've been told" "leeting your son have his own voice"? Do you understand what you're saying.

Don't worry about my finances or group think acceptance rating......they are just fine.

Did I mention my son's 2nd place finish in a BIG TIME DEBATE TOURNAMENT???...they announced it to the whole school...PA SYETEM and all...get used to it!

Still around. I find you common.

Do you work for a living? I mean you spend so much time on here from what I've been told, you must work for the tribune. Do you have first hand knowledge of all these statements you make by being a member of the current staff? Does your son play on the team? Are you teacher at the school? Have you had any high school coaching experience? How can you claim to be a Spartan and give underhanded compliments to players that think you are a joke. You don't think they see you in the stands from time to time and laugh. They wonder what a man like you who is a non-alumni is doing at a practice that doesn't involve his own son. Oh wait, you are an unbaised opinion because you don't coach for this subpar staff correct? Your statement would hold some weight if you would man up and speak to these coaches in person. You call out people for hiding behind screen names yet you have not once had a conversation with any of these men have you? Unless you count the one when you were told you would not be hired. My son has been busting his butt for 3 years and has been exposed to everything from a 4-6 season to the current 1-6. I'm upset he doesn't play more, but equally proud that I let him stand on his own two feet and am not his voice for him any longer. The one thing men like yourself will never get about Damien is the process and education of the man's spirit, not just the competition and academic education. Your a shallow man Mr. Corona and a harsh critic on young men that are living and fighting through adversity. You don't have to like Morrison or his staff, but your lack of respect for a staff you don't know is as ignorant as the man who hates just to hate. Congratualtions on your web celebrity, I hope it brings you all that you want in your life, however shallow it is.

AZUSA, has always had talent through the years, but if you don't know how to use that talent, your destine to always be mediocre.

You mentioned you were at the game, and AZUSA, "looked pretty good" and i'll tell you why the look good. They have a new COACH, WHO PLAYS FOOTBALL LIKE IT SHOULD BE! He doesn't run the FOOTBALL everydown, were you don't fool the oppossing defense.

Here's the second part to that story you learned nothing from. My last "special moment" was the summer before my Senior year. I took that "instruction" out of his hand and told him he would never use it again...on anyone. He didn't and hasn't. Never ran from a fight since.

Everyone is fixable. Even you my friend.

Be a man for once and move on. You look like an a$$ and that's just masking the coward you really are. I know cowards and when I dealing with one. Like I am now.

By the way no one has ever gotten the best of me since. Ask the brother who thought I would fade under pressure after his sister thought it was grade school all over again. (IF you're a Damien person you know what I;m talking about)

But you're welcomed to try. So tell me what have you really accomplished in your life. Made anyone's life better? I highly doubt it. You look sideways too much. It's always what "other people think and what other people feel". See I'll sign my name form now on knowing I'm just that much better than you. NO NEED TO HIDE BEHIND SCREEN NAMES..ESPECIALLY WHEN IT'S THE SAM ECOWARD OVER AND OVER.

After my father's "special talks" I'd give him a kiss and tell him I loved him. No matter how bad it was. I just kept wondering what make's a man so capable of so much anger.

Last year, I'm 49, my Dad asked for my forgiveness. I told him..."For what? You taught me how NOT to be...I'm a GREAT DAD "BECAUSE" of you! Let's move on Dad"

See things usually have a happy ending. So I won't give up hope on you either. God bless you my angry tormentor. May you find Peace before you find me. Believe that. Those special moments taught me something else. Come closer an I'll whisper it in your ear.

Frank Corona,
I left out the fact that this certain coach will and can have coaches in the same mold of what Amat has on their staff. This staff would bring numerous years of quality coaching experience, An off season weight and conditioning program, offensive and defensive systems, and fair opportunities for player development. Wich would translate to winning. I`ve been told by former Damien coaches that Damien is not committed to producing a winning program, mostly by the Administration. I hope this rumor is not true.

Frank Corona said:

Be honest Checkingin....you've been with me for about 4 year now. Did you think this team would go 1-6 and maybe 3-7 when they were freshmen? They were huge then. Most if most all of the seniors never grew much from their freshmen year. Maybe at most 2 inches and 20 lbs total. Look it up.

Taylor was always fast, Salter was always strong, Okafor was huge as a freshmen, Jake was Jake and so for and so on. I took a LOT of heat for two things.

1) The famous "these players should play these positions" letter. Well look at the field. THEY ARE ALL PLAYING THOSE POSITIONS 3 YEARS LATER....every one of them. To a man!

2) Complaining about the lack of fundamentals, game time reps, poorly structured practices and unqualified coaches. 1-6? Come on that didn't just happen over night now did it?

Well the results are on the field. These kids, like I said then, deserved better. Then and now. You can not run any organization without accountability and standards. Sooner or later it will implode on itself. Again look at the games. I try not to. Hate seeing what I thought would happen happen. Especiall with kids on that team that I really admire and respect.

But like a poorly structured war plan whose result are suspect, the soldiers or in this case the players, are the ones we love and respect. Accept that as a fact.

Damien seniors have to make a decision. Is this the way you want to be remembered? The time to erase all doubts about your potential is in front of you. And DOABLE! Every team thinks you are a weak and broken down team. Show them otherwise. Make them pay for your misery. Let them pay for their mistake.

Many of you wear the motto of the school with pride. Is it an empty slogan that will fade with time or are those words something you truely believe in?

"With my Shield or On It!"

Those are powerful words. It leaves no room for interpetation. No room for discussion and no room for the weak and timid. A certainty is a fact without variables. The faith you have as Spartan Men is that you are NO LONGER BOYS. You will RESPOND when CHALLENGED...You are a Spartan for life! Play like you're capable of playing. Silent the crowds in your heads, silence your doubts about anything that distracts you from success. Silence your fears. Come out and destroy your enemy. TAKE CONTROLL OF YOUR FATE! Leave nothing to chance. Every second of every play MATTERS!

I expect you SENIOR MEN to fulfill your destiny. Fight like warriors. Focus on nothing but giving your best effort. LEAD BY EXAMPLE AND CHEER FOR EACH OTHER. BE A "TEAM" FINALLY. Let the chips fall where they may. Don't ever let anyone tell you you are NOT capable of great things!

History is of your own making. No one controld your destiny but YOU.

Best of luck this Friday.

We all know what goes on at these schools. We all know that LA and Wilson are the two best schools in the district, hands down. If they were worried about his football then they would have sent him to LA. So grow up. If you think Workman is such a good school, why is it that the school district selected Workman as the high school they are going to close?

What an excellent point! These teams that lose big in pre-league games (i.e. DR, Damien) seem to set themselves up for a more difficult time in league. I've seen very good teams start league at 0-5 or 1-4 and have a tuff time with teams they should stomp... It's such a momentum thing. Winning is very contageous and when you take the field after a string of wins, you will expect to win... almost regardless of who is standing on the other side of the field.

I wrote a post a month ago and I think my point warrants repeating - pre league games should be tuff - but given a good performance by your team - there should be an opportunity to win.

Again, a great point from a guy who shares great information on this blog!

If you have a problem with a Coach, Parent, or Admin., go straight to them and confront them. We don't need anymore controversy for these boys and their coaches. The more Bulls***t we say, the tension there will be on the field, not rocket science, right?
Kyle is back where he belongs, with his football friends doing what he lives for. Having Kyle at practice will do so much for his team.
Let's get this Party started, there's so much Football to watch, our Boys are hungrier than ever. Yes, Kyle lost out, and I hope he forgives those that did him wrong. I believe, right now he just wants to chase down as many QB's and RB's as possible!

KS,

They probably won't buy into it if they haven't been buying what your selling up to this point. And Senior leadership plays a BIG part... or lack of it. Parents can help, or hurt too. If around the dinner table coach is FOS then the chances are slim.

So I guess if you have to *turn it around* you have your work cut out for you. And certainly, losing can wear on a team. Fred said as much when he questioned Diamond Ranches schedule earlier in the year. But I've been around teams that have not let a bad start effect them and stayed the course.

Then.... anything can happen.

I had a chance to catch the Azusa Duarte game this week. I have to give Azusa some props. They looked pretty. The offense is clicking and the defense has stepped up. I was not impressed with Duarte however. They looked lost like they had no idea what was going on was their coach on vaction did he resign again? Because they looked terrible or maybe Azusa is that good, I do not know? Azusa will finish the season 9 and 1 and they seemed to have earned it. However, I need to pose a question to you can they win a first round playoff game?

Again not taking anything away from them because they were impressive Friday, can they win a first round playoff game because again they beat a team that had only 2 wins. That again is the only team I believe that they have beaten that had wins when they played them.

I know you are going to say the teams have wins but what I am saying is when Azusa beat the teams they have beaten 5 or 6 of them had not had any wins up to that point? Those teams got their wins after playing Azusa. Just throwing that out not trying to put them down because like I said I was impressed I am just trying to get a feeling from a guy on the inside how far can they go in the playoffs?

Can they play with the likes of the teams ranked ahead of them by CIF San Dimas, Valley Christian, Monrovia, and even a few ranked below them San Marino, Northview, Rosemead, Paraclete, and Pomona? What is your opinion?

Quick question for ya since you are a former coach. Do you really think a team buys into " you can make the playoffs if you win out" theory when that team is 1-6?? I would think morale would be low on a team with that type of record being DR or Damien. I just don't see kids buying into it. How is possible to get them to buy into it??

Regarding all this San Dimas talk... It needs to go away. The young man is back at practice, a lesson (good, bad, or indifferent) has likely been learned... time to move on! The Saints will rock Baldwin Park this week and move on to a league championship!

All I know is that if the Damien coaches are doing their job, in practice or in the locker room they're telling players some version of, "... if we win out we go to the playoffs...". Just like the 1-6 Diamond Ranch coaches are saying... but no one seems to think that is so crazy.

Really, no matter how the first 7 games go, the Damien season could very easily have been predicted to come down to:
*a big must-win game against Ayala and two games you should/could win* - then you get extra fun.

Of course, if they aren't coaching 'em up that way then the problems go way deeper than that... as some have tried to subtley, or not-so-subtley, hint at.

Administrators, family, friends, and fans should never forget -

Coaching matters.

King Stud said:

I wouldn't say you are right 99 percent of time maybe more like 50. You said Damien was going to go undefeated in league which is already down the toilet.

In fairness to you Franky lets look at Damien's last three games shall we?

This week at Ayala. I don't see Damien winning this one. Ayala is 6-1 and some of their wins have been against soft teams however the Bulldog defense has only allowed 102 points in 7 games for an average of 14 per contest plus they have blasted chino and diamond bar in the their last 2 games by a combined 60-6.

Home vs Diamond Bar
This is potentially a winnable game for the Spartans. Both teams have played Glendora with the tartans beating DB 47-34 and Damien losing last week 17-14. Since it's a home game for Damien I can see them winning however this is a toss up game .

At Chino. Where have you gone John Monger? This use to be a Div 2 powerhouse till he stepped down and the program has now stepped down. I see the Spartans winning this one as Chino has only scored 22 points in the last 4 games.

Damien should go 2-1 against 2 of the bottom feeders of the Sierra and might even go 1-2 with the DB game being a toss up. I doubt the Spartans go 3-0 and even of they do they will be on the road in the first round with a 3-7 record and will have to play a high seed and most likely get their ass handed to them.

You know this experiment is really working. I say Damien needs to improve. I get slammed. I say Damien has a chance . I get slammed. I say Damien needs to whatever. I get slammed. I say Damien don't give up hope. I get slammed. I say it's all over. I get slammed. I say Damien will win. I get slammed. I say Damien played well all things considered I get slammed.I say Betance gives them a better chance to win right now. I get slammed. I say Guillen has heart. I get slammed. I say a 1-6 team that is only 0-2 in a league that gets into the playoffs with a 3-2 league record and I get slammed. Kind of reminds me of going to a Damien practices. If I agree with the complaining dads . It's all good. If I make suggestions to improve, it's what do you know. Either way I find it more and more amusing seeing as I haven't gone to the last two games against Chino hills and Glendora.

I think I see a pattern. But then again that's just paranoid me. lol

So checkingin what do you think Damien should do? Pack it in for the last 3 games. Forfeit the games and not show up? Maybe you have a clear suggestion other than wrong wrong wrong. What's the right course of action and system given the commitment level of the players and the level of the coaches? Impress me with a solid plan/program/system? Tis ought to be fun.

I do find it odd though that some of the comments I made 4 years ago have regrettably come true. Almost 99% of them but who's counting? The only difference is now those same attackers have kids on a 1-6 team and that's when things become clearer. So why not say Damien will win out and make the playoffs and win 1 game and get to the second round? Who does it hurt?

Here's my honest opinion. I don't care. Nut up and win or bow down and lose. Every team gets the record they deserve....one way or another. Playoffs salvages a terrible season. And in Damien's case the playoffs start today. Pretty cool huh?

Sorry took me a minute to stop laughing. A 1-6 team is going to make the playoffs? Just like your earlier prediction that Damien is still going to win the Sierra league title? lol too funny.

The Damien situation is a sad one because that's a solid program that hasn't done well in recent years. Morrison might be a little like Verti in the sense that hes a good man but he might be in over his head coaching the Spartans. I think Damien needs to get a coach in the mold of a Pasqy someone who can recruit and coach at the same time.

Joe Amat. Parcells has always done well maybe with the exception of his stint with the Cowboys. I know some his past players respected him but also there are some who didn't like him at all because of his abrasive approach to players. In today's NFL you need to be tough but also have the ability to use diplomacy. That info from his book was a good read.

Actually I'm not Just Wondering. After a great time at the Arizona/USC game I come back to find a new and improved stalker/coward and someone actually using my name to slam Damien and Morrison. Like I said it wasn't and isn't me. I read where someone said Morrison wouldn't be back as told to him by his nephew and I called the school to wish him well and to tell him I thought the players could beat Glendora. It being Homecoming Week he never picked up and I didn't leave a message. Either way I wish Morrison and the Spartans well. I've never understood the lack of lower level coaching support Morrison gets seeing as he's a former Spartan of the Year and has made a solid family commitment to the school. Morrison could easily have had this job until he retired but a program needs alumni loyalty (former players) and adminsitrative funding (better pay for lower level coaches) to succeed. He's had neither in my opinion. Great family man though. I'll never argue or question that. Like I said after the Amat game I still believe Damien is capable of winning consistently. But Joey is right they weren't going to beat Amat that night. Damien will make the playoffs and win into the second round....if they just commit to kicking the crap out of the people. Damien is huge and fast but lack commitment to the task at hand. KICKING THE CRAP OUT OF PEOPLE!!!!! THAT'S THE TASK AT HAND! Football is a violent game played by smart committed people.

Here's a little news for the "you disgrace the school" drive by artist....

My youngest Spartan made it to the Finals of The Fullerton Debate Tournament over the weekend with over 40 teams and lost to Notre Dame to come in second Place. For a first debate tournament novice that HUGE!!!!

So like I always say..."The cream rises to the top" again. That's not bragging haters that's "getting it done!" Maybe Harvard, Stanford or even Yale might be one Corona short....it's early but he does have big plans. Maybe you'll see him on the basketball court sometime soon....he's pretty special there as well. .

Joe Amat said:

My Friend, for what it's worth, here's some stuff that you might find interesting. I'm a sucker for those Leadership, Teamwork, and Motivation books.

Going through Bill Parcells' book "Finding a Way to Win" (from his Patriot days)

On preferential treatment for great players: "Great players are special simply because they do more for the team than the rest. Their greatness may buy them preferential treatment in some areas. On the field, they may toss the book aside at times and play on instinct. They've earned the right to take changes -- to be flexible -- because they've proved that their judgment is sound. Consistency is overrated. A leader is obligated not to be consistent, but to be right -- to do what's best for the organization."

On focusing on a player's strengths rather than his weaknesses: "It's easy to downgrade people by dwelling on their weaknesses. It's harder to look at them with fresh eyes and identify their strengths -- and how they can help the organization to function."

On what will destroy a team: "Three things can ruin any organization. One is your competition. The second is public perception, as shaped by the media. If you're always seen in a negative light, your group's morale will likely go under -- along with your performance. The third factor? Division from within -- and this is the greatest threat, hands down. The first task of leadership is to promote -- and enforce -- collective loyalty, also known as teamwork."

On how a head coach differs from others in the organization: "The head coach is unique in two ways. He's the one person who sees the big picture down on the field. And he's the only one whose fate is totally wrapped up in winning. If the team loses too often, the head coach will be gone."

Remembering that what happens in the locker room stays in the locker room: "Washing dirty laundry in public is probably the quickest way to divide your team from within. The only honest meetings are private meetings. Our [weekly team meetings] are exclusive. Only players and coaches are invited, and our privacy is sacred; even our owner is barred. Secretaries, trainers, equipment men, the PR director -- one of them sets foot in that room. I know how gossip turns into rumors, and rumors into controversies, and we've already got enough of those."

On the coach's role as a teacher: "Be a teacher, not a drill sergeant. I might overcoach a player, might discuss things a little longer than necessary, but he'll know that I appreciate his problem, and that I'll do my best to help solve it. To teach, you have to listen as well as talk. When we experiment with something new in practice, our players' feedback is invaluable, especially from veterans who are honest about any problems they're having."

On what sets disciplined people apart: "(1) The capacity to get past distractions. (2) The willingness to condition mind and body for the task at hand. (3) The ability to keep your poise when those around you are losing theirs.

These are probably truisms on NFL teams, HS programs in the SGV or could be adapted in most any workplace.

The best coach I ever had was the hardest on me. The harshest punishment I ever had was given to me by this same coach. Sometimes as a coach we have to remember that our special players are no different than all the kids we coach. No better no worse, The punishments need to fit the crime. Not increase because of our special "place in our hearts" or them.

Here's my story:

It was my junior year. I missed practice. Spring Ball as I recall. My coaChes were Rollinson, Ruedaflores and this idiot Zavala who loved my brother and was convinced I could replicate his ability at the QB position. NOT A CHANCE. I was terrible. And that's an insult to terrible QBs.

Long story short. I wanted off the team. Thought IF I missed practice enough they would find another second string QB. I was aweful. Then I would get back on the team as a Safety...my natural positon.I knew where to throw it, when to throw it and knew all the plays but couldn't complete a pass over 20 yards..if that!!! at the Varsity level.

So this coach who had a "special place" in his heart for me called my Dad. Didn't call any other players Dads for missed practices but called my Dad. Who I love more than anything. Always have...even then.

When my Dad found me he beat me with a water hose. Almost to the point of exhaustion. Me and my dad sharing time together. Special moments for sure.

Well the next day at practice this ruddy fat F3ck of a Caoch Zavala comes over during strecthing and tells me ..."How's it going?" With a big smile on his face. He's all giggles and Rollinson and Ruedaflores are coming over. Seeing as this half man thinks he's "ON" and will share a "coaching moment" with R & R.

So as luck would have it we're stretching groins and then the call come out '''OVER YOUR HEADS!!!" Butt down Ankles over your head touching the ground!!!"

Well the next thing I hear is PUT YOUR LEGS DOWN!!!!! NOW!!! PUT YOUR LEGS DOWN!!!!

Seems the purple and green water hose marks upset his stomach. Coach Ruedafloers comes over and tells me to , "STAND UP!" He pulls my shirt up and sees my back and arms and Rollinson yells at me..."WHO DID THAT TO YOU???"

Coach Zavala tells them he called my Dad because I didn't come to practice. Never forget the look on his face when Coach Ruedaflores walked me off the field that day. I THINK I lost that "special Player" status that day....what a relief that was! LOL

I want to remind Coach Z why coaching at the high school level is vital to a young man's life. And the reason I NEVER wanted that RESPONSIBILITY.

Letting Kyle practice is something he could have done all along. Embarasasing him and keeping him in limbo for 4 weeks is a disgrace. Maybe somewhere in Coach Z mind he really believes Kyle has a "special place in his heart" but I'd like to tell him that that SPECIAL PLACE CUTS BOTH WAYS.

Kyle I admire your conviction and your mother's never ending belief in you. It is an honor to know your family. Money and lawyers would only have made this messy so I did what I did or didn't do. Tough reliving something so horrible as a coach's betrayal. Hope you understand. . At least you learned a powerful lesson. NO ONE AND I MEAN NO ONE WILL EVER FIGHT FOR YOU LIKE YOUR MOTHER WILL AND HAS.

HONOR HER LOVE AS YOU NEVER HAVE BEFORE. CHARACTER IS NOT FOR SALE AND NEITHER ARE THE WITHEMS. BETS OF LUCK TO YOU KYLE.

RBS AND QBS....put your heads on swivels because the BOY IS BACK!!!!!

I didn't get to see SD Dad's post (Fred removed it before I saw it)... but I can tell you that Coach Zernikow runs an excellent program. The players all respect him and despite the issues with their linebacker who was removed, the team is on track to continue their great season. It is unfortunate when any player is lost... to injury, discipline, grades, or otherwise... but one disgruntled parent shouldn't come on the blog and throw an entire program under the train. San Dimas has great kids, great coaches, great parents, and a great record to prove it. As far as Barbone, I believe what coach Zernikow said in the paper following last week's win... a sore hamstring... he'll be back next week. The broken arm involved their fine back-up runner (#33) and he simply broke him arm in practice. It's been repaired and he'll be back next season to fill Barbone's shoes. The nay sayers are just that, nay sayers!

The Miramonte and San Antonio League both have an odd number of teams so they all have a bye in league. Schools have usually chosen to schedule cross-league games during this bye - and most still do. Charter Oak and West Covina both have byes this week and chose not to play - probably because this year both leagues are in the same playoff division. This would eliminate any potential rematch in the playoffs.

I personally think it's a pretty good decision, because the "rematch dynamic" throws an extra wrinkle into both games that I'd rather not deal with either if I was the coach.

A couple of big games this week… but first, how about WC going down to a supercharged Rowland team? While the win wasn’t overwhelming… hey no one thought Rowland had the tools to take on West Covina! Congratulations to the Raiders and West Covina needs to buckle down… their league well likely go to a team with a loss (or two?). A couple of other games that were more interesting than I thought they would be… Rosemead hangs 52 on South El Monte… the Panthers are really legit! Look out San Dimas… they’re coming! Finally, Azusa really handled Duarte… I actually picked Duarte… and the crow tastes great! Way to rock AHS!

Here are my picks for this week…

Northview vs. Ganesha – I love that Ganesha has nailed down a couple of wins this year. However, because the Pomona team was handled by San Dimas, the Vikings are emerging as a solid No. 2 team in the VVL. I like NVHS +24 or more.

Gladstone vs. Bassett – Every week I find myself searching for any tidbit of positive news from camp Happy Rock. Still nothing! Bassett +17.

Glendora vs. Chino Hills – A couple of strong teams here… the Tartans are coming off a squeaker against what has been a faltering Damien team and even though they won, I don’t think anyone expected a three point spread at 0.00 in the fourth! I like the Huskies here +10.

South Hills vs. Walnut – I have a bad feeling about SH in this game. On paper, it’s clearly theirs to lose… but the Huskies need to keep showing up and not have even a little let down. The Mustangs, on the other hand, seem to have nothing to lose and everything to gain here. No matter, I think SHHS takes this one +14 or so.

Diamond Ranch vs. Los Altos – Everyone keeps saying “hey, this is the week for the Conqs!” I don’t know… I think the Conqs are going to go 0 for 2008. It’s a shame… with a new coach it would be nice to see something to build on… but it’s just not there this year. DRHS +21.

Baldwin Park vs. San Dimas – Baldwin Park is coming off a closer than expected win against a much improved Ganesha team. The Braves have struggled this season and the Saint’s are a real buzz saw in the VVL this season. Too much offensive power for the Braves to compete. SDHS +21 or more.

El Monte vs. Rosemead – The Rosemead Panthers are the “during the season” most improved team in the entire valley. I’m sure on August 15, 2008 no one, and I mean no one, expected Rosemead to post the numbers they’ve posted… except maybe the coaches and the players there! El Monte has a pending meeting with a steamroller this Friday. Rosemead +24.

Bonita vs. Wilson – There is some talk that Gilmore is struggling with grades to the extent he may lose (or already has) his eligibility. That would be a real shame for him. Also, Wilson has about a 2% chance of winning this game if Gilmore is playing. Without him, they have a .000874229% chance. Bonita +24.

Pomona vs. Covina – If we use these two teams’ respective games against San Dimas as a barometer, Covina wins this game by a ton. But, if we look at athleticism, the two teams are pretty close. Pomona lacks a little on the defensive line while Covina enjoys great line play. Covina lacks a little in the offensive back field and on team speed, while Pomona has a strong offensive back field and is very fast. I like Pomona here +3… but this is a really close one!

Gabrielino vs. South El Monte – Garay had a tuff time against a really well prepared Rosemead squad last week. Gabrielino isn’t nearly as strong as Rosemead, but then again neither is South El Monte. I like SEMHS +10.

Nogales vs. Rowland – Rowland pulls off the upset of the season thus far… and there’s always an opportunity for a letdown following a big win. If the Nobles were a little stronger, the Raiders would really have to be careful. As it is, they only need to be moderately careful! RHS +24.

Mountain View vs. Arroyo – The Knights are playing good football! That may come as a surprise to some, but not to me. They are athletic, well coached, and never satisfied with good enough… all great qualities for prep football teams. The Vikings, on the other hand, have fallen into a rut and are having a tuff time. I like AHS +17.

Sierra Vista vs. La Puente – Sierra Vista is a better team in nearly every regard. Should La Puente win, they earn second place in the “upset of the season” contest, right behind Rowland! SVHS +24.

Workman vs. Duarte – Duarte got hit square in the mouth last week by a surging Azusa squad. They will likely take the field Friday and play like jilted lovers! I’m sure the extra conditioning this week will show as Duarte pushes Workman around. DHS +17.

Chino vs. Diamond Bar – Ayala worked Diamond Bar last week… BIG! However, despite the fact that Ayala and Chino HS are only a few miles apart, their respective football programs are on opposite ends of the universe! DBHS +14.

Damien vs. Ayala – The Spartans need to grab their ankles and hold on tight… I’ll hurt at first, but you’ll get used to it after about the tenth slap! Ayala +107 or so!

Loyola vs. Bishop Amat – Well, here comes league! I think Amat has a reasonable chance at 2-1 over the next three weeks… However, more realistically they might go 1-2. Either way, Loyola is on the right side of the hyphen! BAHS +14 or more.

Aquinas vs. Western Christian – The little Catholic school in Ontario is getting it done! Aquinas +10.

Have fun boys… and stay safe!
