Tribune's Super 33: No Changes At The Top

| | Comments (53) |

Game of the week ...

1. Bishop Amat (5-1) -- Orange Lutheran, West Covina and St. Francis would all be undefeated if not for losses to the Lancers. Amat gets Chaminade (1-5) at home Friday before the real work begins in the Serra.

2. Charter Oak (6-0-1) -- The only difference between the Chargers and Amat is probably depth. From a starters standpoint, the Chargers match-up. Too bad we won't get to see them play. I'm not sure the Chargers will lose another game the rest of the season.

3. San Dimas (6-0) -- A week after we move them past South Hills, they look flat in the first half against Covina before pulling away for a 35-24 victory. Let's see if they learned their lesson heading to what has become "mighty" Pomona on Thursday.

4. South Hills (5-1) -- Hard to learn much after an easy blow-out win over Nogales, and next comes the showdown against winless Los Altos on Thursday. Can you imagine if the Conq's get their first win against Bogan. That alone makes it interesting.

5. West Covina (6-1) -- After beating surging Walnut, the Bulldogs could get a big jump on the San Antonio with a win over Rowland on Friday. About the only concern for Maggiore and crew is their inconsistent defense.

6. Glendora (4-2) -- -- The defending Sierra League champs took care of business against Diamond Bar, and knows that Damien won't just roll over this week. Seriously, if Damien doesn't turn the ball over ten times, this is a game.

7. Rosemead (4-2) -- If reports that South El Monte QB Jose Garay has a hurt shoulder and won't play Friday, this will play a huge role in what we thought would be a thriller. In any case, the Panthers were going to win and should have an easy time the rest of the way in the MVL.

8. Bonita (4-2) -- After losing the Smudge Pot it was mighty impressive to watch the Bearcats show up a week later and pound Los Altos, 39-10. They play Charter Oak at the end of the season so a win over Diamond Ranch on Friday would pave the way for a big week 10.

9. Rowland (5-1) -- After a 41-13 win over Wilson, the Raiders will find out just how good they are at West Covina on Friday. My guess is it will be close, but the Bulldogs will have just enough to pull it out.

10. Northview (4-2) -- The Vikings' 31-0 win over Baldwin Park was their most complete, especially from an offensive standpoint against a very good defense. Can they keep it going against rival Covina?

Rounding out out the top 33: 11. Walnut (4-2), 12. Diamond Bar (3-3), 13. Pomona (5-1), 14. South El Monte (3-3), 15. Diamond Ranch (1-5), 16. Azusa (5-1), 17. Damien (1-5), 18. Western Christian (5-1), 19. El Monte (3-3), 20. Baldwin Park (3-3), 21. Workman (4-2), 22. Duarte (2-4), 23. Covina (1-5), 24. Los Altos (0-6), 25. Wilson (1-5), 26. Ganesha (2-4), 27. Arroyo (1-5), 28. Sierra Vista (1-6), 29. Mountain View (2-4), 30. Nogales (1-5), 31. Bassett (1-5), 32. La Puente (1-5), 33. Gladstone (0-6).

As a fan of a team who is DIRECTLY impacted by kids from Pasadena who choose to go to school elsewhere, I've ALWAYS been frustrated with the fact that they've felt the need to go elsewhere. But hey, such is life, and I wish the kids nothing but the best. Btw, four of the Guru's top 10 juniors (Muema, Powell, Rufus, and Vaughns) all hail from 'Dena. Good luck boys! The Stangs would LOVE to face you guys in the playoffs.

Joe Amat,

Open enrollment allows for schools in a particular district to allow only students who live in their boundaries. In Pasadena for example, a kid who is supposed to attend Blair can choose to go to PHS or Muir and vice versa. However, a kid who lives outside of the districts boundaries (which are Pasadena, Altadena, and Sierra Madre) are not allowed to attend PUSD schools. THe easy way around this, as you well know, is to simply use someone else's address....which people do ALL THE TIME!

Joe Amat said:

COalumni08 ,

More power to you. I think families should have a choice where they go to school and you exercised that right.

As long as it's done within the rules - who cares?

All public schools have that option under "open enrollment" and Charter Oak makes the most of it. Good for them.

COalumni08 said:

Football fan- well if you knew anything about CO and us boys from pasadena and other areas you would know why we were there. first of all it has nothing to do with Big Lou recruiting us so get that one out of your head. most of us boys have family or close family friends that live in this area and attend there and know the difference being at CO has made for them. maybe if you thought about it CO happens to be in a better area then pasadena and some other places. also maybe our parents wanted us to have a better opportunity to go to college and i happen to know how supporting Big Lou and his staff are about going to college. not only do they want us to succeed on the field but in the classroom as well and ive never had coaches support me in the way they did. maybe going to school isnt always about going there to play football its about having support no matter what your goals are and CO does that.

What ? said:

How can you rank South El monte and Azusa ahead of teams like D Ranch and Damien ? if the all played each other, South and Azusa would be killed, 40 point blow-outs. Get real. I guess D-ranch and Damien should schedule their games to match South and Azusa (sisters of the blind and Cream-puff high)

Just Get There! said:

Carpool, Metro, Moms, Dads, Buddies...transportation my man. THAT"S how they get to Charter Oak?

Does that cover all the bases?

Football fan said:

How is it that CO get's all the kids from Pasadena ????? Every year all their best players are from out of town ???? Wow, someone should ask Big Lou what he's secret is. Last I checked they are listed as a public school, so how can they get away with recruiting like they do.

upset prediction said:

i think that SH is primed for an upset against LA...if you think about it. SH has a soft line and LA has been fighting both offense and defense lines against some good size line men starting with San Dimas. fighting in the trenches becomes second nature and sooner or later you get tired of being pushed and you start pushing back and when you find out they dont push as hard as (back to the SH soft line) you will push harder! LA will hammer SH this thursday night. all cause of the line, where games are lost and won. go los altos give longoria some protection and lets do this. always got your back win or loss!

CO Bro-since we're talking about "dropping contracts". Bro-Please clarify...Why do YOU think CO ended the Amat contract?

Posted by: reality czech

RC, honestly I don't have a clue as to why this game isn't played annually. I can give you an educated guess. I think if CO and BA played each year or at least every few years, the loser would be worried about losing players to the winning team. I don't believe that CO does not recruit, let’s face facts. You MUST recruit to stay competitive. But these are just my feelings and I have absolutely NO say so in these matters, just like most if not all of the bloggers here. We can debate this for ever and probably will never come to a unanimously satisfactory conclusion as to who would beat who if these teams played. We can look at games played in the past and yes Amat absolutely beat up on CO, but trying to compare teams from 3 & 4 years ago to teams today is IMO not a valid argument. Not one single player from either team played in any of those games, Amat has a different Head Coach and the talent level is completely different for both teams. Believe me I would love to see these teams play more often and I honestly believe if CO and Amat played this year it would be a hell of a lot more competitive than the games played in the past. It may not be as competitive next year or the year after that, but who the hell knows? The fact of the matter is this; Bishop Amat is a division 1 football team. Charter Oak is a division 6 football team. For this discussion to be even taken place says a lot about that division 6 team!

expert said:

When BA goes 0-3 in league & does not get invited to the playoffs, does CO take the top spot?

Boz said:

Reality Czech, Please be aware that that post was not from the real me. This same type of crap happened last year between CO & Tartan fans and it got ugly. Please have the NADS to discover your own title to post with.

LAC said:

In my opinion Charter Oak has a legit chance to take CIF this year, they have a great squad. As far as Bishop Amat its great to see them doing so well. I can see them making the playoffs but not much after that. Unfortunately for BA I can't see them taking CIF anytime soon either, D1 is way to tough. As far as comparing both teams the debate can go on forever, we'll just have to see how the season plays out. Let the kids play parents/alumni/etc.. CO and BA aren't playing each other this year. Get over it!

breaking news said:

charter oak is not WELL over 2,000 and they do not get to hand pick there kids unfortunatly most are short mexican kids haha

and you always seem to tip your hat and think highly of those 04 05 wins

C0-04 lost to west covina and a very average los altos team

C0-05 aka the worst CO team in 11 years

if im bishop amat im stayin clear of small schools i mean look at the leverage oregon state has on usc right now

if bishop amat and co played 10 times and co won 2 of the 10 thats a win for CO

reality czech said:

breaking news-we played in 04 & 05 resulting in a pair of Amat blowouts. I'm simply trying to get an opinion from someone as to WHY the contract was discontinued if CO thought they were going to be good, were making money on the deal, and thought Amat was going to be down. I can think of one reason that probably reveals the truth-but maybe someone else has a better one.
And that "small public school" has well over 2,000 students and more students than any other SGV school in the Trib top ten except West Covina and Glendora-and 700-800 students more than Amat.

breaking news said:

charter oak has 2 returning starters on defense lets start there...

and ill finish with... charter oak not even being a real city ( i mean come on who outside of a 5 mile radius knows where CO is) its a small public school and there in the conversation with a div 1 powerhouse

heres a reality CZECH its not 1995 and this isnt the div 1 finals on channel 5

your passed your prime
the glory days are over

food for thought? why should CO play you when more then half of the valley already thinks CO is better?? theres no need to play at that point and the recruting war is the biggest win in this game

reality czech said:

foxy, that was one of those Amat non-playoff teams codude was hating on that beat the Chargers 34-7. CO had some studs like Johnson, Snowden etc and lost in the CIF Finals the next year-so they were still pretty good. CO is marginally better this year-but the Lancers are infinitely better. Again,if Lou knew he had a championship caliber team, was making bank at the gate, and the Lancers were going to be down because of a rookie coaching change-why wouldn't he renew? There's only one possible reason. Guess?

Dude, you need to chill. The problem clearly has more to do with a lack of skill than it does pride. I think these kids are giving 100%, I just think their 100% is a little less than the 100% of their competition.

George Lopez said:

You member, I member. CO best played Amat's worse team and got trashed for 2 years. Now you want to pit this years CO best against a better and much improved Amat team? You don't want to go there, so just keep on dreaming that you guys could beat Amat. If Amat played CO, we would hand your jockstraps again and the score would be so as lopsided as yo mommas breasts.

WE CAN PLAY BETTER THAN THAT!

COACH SANCHEZ, YOUR QUARTERBACK SHOULDN'T BE STARTING! PUT IN SONNY! YOUR STARTING QUARTERBACK LOOK'S LIKE A ATHLETE, BUT HE'S NO QUARTERBACK!

ONE TOUCHDOWN AGAINST AZUSA! AND THAT'S BECAUSE AZUSA, TOOK OUT THEIR STARTERS,AND THE SCORE WAS 51 TO 7.

THAT IS THE WORSE SPANKING, WE HAVE EVER HAD AGAINST OUR RIVIAL I BELIEVE. RIDICULOUS!

WHAT'S WORSE IS, WILL GO DOWN AS THE SCHOOL THAT LOSS TOO GANSHA,WITH THE WORST RECORD IN CALIFORNIA.

CO would lose to:
Los Osos
St. Francis
Orange Lutheran
and This weeks Chaminade.

How can anyone in their right mind try to compare them the Bishop Amat this year. Flop Schedules and tell me how CO would do against Amat schedule including the Serra league. I am sure Amat would do fine against CO's schedule. This is why CO does not play Amat. Great artwork on the Amat field a few years back tho. Credit there. Some say Amat coaches did the field as a motivational tool.

sierra league doesnt produce many back 2 back league champions. looks like glendora may do just that.

CO Bro

You can dig up old graves or leave the dead wear they lie. Which do you prefer? You know very well why the contract was dropped. Same reason for other teams which dropped the CO contract.

If you want to compare the present Tartan schedule with that of CO, I'll let you decide which schedule you think is tougher.

I think its time for your diaper change.

GHS didn't drop CO because, as you put it, "they were to physical for us". You want physical games, try Corona Centennial or Redlands East Valley before you pop off. No problem with physical brutal games, hey GHS could dish out hard hits with the best.

You need to look at "other" issues during the 07 game which may have triggered Coach P to end the contract.

dhighfan said:

have glendora play our schedule, instead of dropping teams because they're better than you (i.e. Charter Oak and Bishop Amat), and then you can talk. yeah we're having a rough year but hey at least we never dropped a team from our schedule because they were too physical for us hahaha

Fred,
Any official word on some of these injuries that have been posted on the blog:

Goss - South Hills
Garay - SEM
San Dimas banged up???

These are important players - and who is banged up at SD??? It kinda matters...No?

Just Wondering said:

Hey,
Way to go San Dimas. In taking a close look I can see that the Saint's are the only team with a perfect record. Now I know Charter Oak tied Rancho and all the CO faithful will say "we're perfect too! We never lost... a tie isn't a loss." They would be right, but if they had their choice, wouldn't they rather be 6-0 then 5-0-1? Of course they would... because 6-0 is perfect while 5-0-1 is, well, almost perfect! Congradualtions to both teams! Job well done!

Just Wondering said:

Fred,

This upcoming contest between West Covnia and Rowland will present an interesting problem should Rowland win. I realize WC is favored and I think they will win, but what if they don't? Where does that leave the three teams between them (i.e. Bonita, Rosemead, and Glendora)? Should Rowland win does it elvevate them above these three or will it simply drop WC below them?

Obviously the rankings will have a lot to do with how Bonita, Rosemead, and Glendora fair this week. But should Rowland win, it really points out the "problem" with rankings.

I don't understand how DB is still ranked below Walnut. Granted I can't stand DB, being from Walnut. But seriously, they did beat us. What is the logic with that?

And I know we barely lost to WC, but they had something like 7 turnovers.

I am proud of our team, but I do believe if you are going to do rankings at least have them make sense.
