Volleyball: Who's the best?

| | Comments (59) |

The regular season in girls volleyball is winding down, and on the eve of big league showdowns between Walnut and South Hills and La Puente and Gladstone, and next week's Sierra League encounter between St. Lucy's and Diamond Bar, I can't think of a better time than to dicuss area Player of the Year candidates.
Here's are a few who standout up to this point of the season:

Melinda Gomez (South Hills) - The junior is the arguably the top middle blocker in the area, and the key cog in the Husky machine. She is also the only returning player from last season's all-area first team.

Valerie Brain (Glendora) - The Tartans have used the Brain smarts this year, and that usually includes Brain being the focal point of an offensive attack that can come from a variety of options.

Courtney Donaldson (Bonita) - The go-to player for Bonita, who comes up big in the biggest games. She was huge as the Bearcats rallied from a two-game deficit to beat Charter Oak in five last week.

Samantha Sheller/Jennifer Silva (Walnut) - I couldn't separate these two, who are the two reasons Walnut is off to a stellar, or should I say, Sheller start. Both have come up big in matches and have similar attack numbers.

Jamie Parke (Diamond Bar) - She does a little of every thing for the Brahmas, leading the team in assists and holds her own on the attacking end.

Comments: This is just a rough draft. Next week and the playoffs will decide who is this season's Miss Volleyball and who makes the all-area first team. There are others to be considered, but these are by top five/six for now.

Where's Stewart and Musulman from SH?

re: comments airbud, is it not enough for the team to steamroll through the second half of the Siera League season? Most good coaches realize it takes quite a while for a team to take hold of his/her teachings. The end result is what matters, not the start or the middle parts. Coach Douglass is doing it as he see's fit and the results are now apparent.

Los Altos played their hearts out. Macias with 17 kills, Owens with 15 kills and Russell with 14 kills. They went to win and pulled it off. Congratulations!!

So now that the sleeping Giants (los altos) woke up and beat the 6th ranked team, where do they stand?

MOLTEN said:

As stated below! Los Altos beat Charter Oak last night.

Charter Oak is good, but i dont think they can beat Bonita. Lets see how they do against Los Altos, The last time they played, Los Altos had their setter out ill. Bonita and Los Altos both have some serious fire power, TOUGH WEEK for Charter OAK.

I predict Diamond Bar is the number one team in the new rankings this week. Which will mean they will promplty go out and lose tonight vs. St. Lucy's

airbud said:

Whoever said the following from the earlier post...I agree with the person that volleyball is a team sport and that St Lucy's does have a "big" hole their deffense. The six players on the court have to play defense before they can transition to offense. Too many girls are standing around watching the game instead of playing. Each girl on the court has a job to do and that means playing defense too. So, don't expect the Libero, (Christine Aguilera) to get every ball. Balls tip over the blocker; (inside the 10 ft line) are not the libero's responsibility. Their defense has been a problem since day one and the coach has yet to correct it. Until it's corrected other teams will continue to exploit St Lucy's lack of total defense.

That is a great point...hopefully our DB coach can exploit that again tonite...obviously SL coach doesn't know how to coach defense. Go DB and go vote!

Article on Mayfield in the Pasadena Star News-their top hitter has signed with Georgia Tech.

GHigh said:

Docgolfer,

I asked about Mayfield in the other blog. They came in 2nd at Ayala so they have to be strong. I believe they also have most of there team back from last year's CIF championship. Probably solid in all areas.

Fan said:

Mayfield is a very good (young team). There weakness is blocking. You really don't see them block very much but in turn there defense is amazing. They also have two amamzing OH's and one very strong RS. Good luck...

docgolfer said:

Hey, does anyone know about mayfield? who are they and what do they have? ghigh, there in your division, so do you know anything about them?

me said:

how did dbar, s hills and glendora jump riverside poly and santiago? big 8 league is possibly the best in the division. should be a fun playoff division! no dominant team other than REV.

Regent Fan said:

St. Lucy's vs. Diamond Bar is at St. Lucy's. Take Grand (North) and make left on Sierra Madre. Make a right through the iron gates and head straight up the hill. Gym is second to the top hill.

St. Lucy's doesn't charge unless it is a CIF Game.

Thanks GHigh.

GHigh said:

New CIF poll is out. Diamond Bar moved up to #5, Glendora #7, South Hills #9, Walnut listed as "others" in Div. II-AA.
In Div. III-A Ganesha moved up to #8 and San Dimas dropped to #10-kind of disappointing considering San Dimas was ranked #5 last week. That's a pretty big drop after only one loss.
La Puente is still #7 in Div. IV-A.

Is the St. Lucy's-DB game at St. Lucy's? Does St. Lucy's charge? Any special directions to the gym? Should be a great match-hoping to make it out.

sgvolley said:

The San Antonio league is going to have Co-champs. The Valle Vista is going to have Co-Champs. If Charter Oak beats Bonita the Miramonte could have Co-Champs. Might as well have St. Lucy's beat DB and have Tri-Champs.

Talk about parity in the SGV.

Having read all that has been said, both positive and negative about SL's, they are about to participate in one of the most exciting games of the season. For a team and coach that has been put down for their game approach, (ie. two setters system, poor defense, at times unemotional almost apathetic players on and off the court, etc.) they hold in their hands the ability to influence the outcome (winner/winners) of the Sierra League. If they play as a "team" like they did against Glendora (at home) and at the Ayala Tournament (especially against Los Osos) then they have the ability to beat DB and take a piece of the League Pie and not only a piece for themselves but they will also cut a piece and serve it up for Glendora (three way tie). A loss on Tuesday to DB will give Diamond Bar the sole victory of League with Glendora 2nd and St. Lucy's 3rd.

Kind of funny how things could all play out. Like they say "it's never over till it's over". SL's you have the biggest opportunity of the season against DB. Let's show them what you are really made of.

Let me say good luck to both teams and Glendora get your forks ready because SL is going to be serving up some pie.

Yum! Yum!

GO REGENTS!!!!!!!!!!!

If you would like to hear the best Volleyball game this season. Walnut vs South Hill. It will be pod cast on sportsnetusa.net on Monday.

tootney said:

re: comments on best players and so forth. Let's not forget that coaches play certain players more than others and as a result their statistics are superior. Case in point is St.Lucy's whereby the setter's stats willnot match up with others in their league. Dosn't mean their any less valuable to the team, it's just a coaches decision to utilize them. Also all those kills by the hitters didn't happen without the setter's providing them with the sets. Until a hitter can pass, set and hit for themselves let's not get carried away with their success.

socal said:

Count down to Tuesday...DB vs SL. Go Brahmas! No mention of Megan Pulone? She leads the Sierra League & her team in Assists! and her hitting percentage & digs are 2nd in league. What about Katie Kelly, great in blocks & kills this week!!

dr said:

Gomez didnt play much back row against Walnut. I think she is a liability in the back row but dominant in the front row.

Vballerdude said:

I agree that it is a team sport and all girls mentioned are deserving of a chance. Just wondering, how is their defense? Gomez from SHHS is a very good defender and gets grt blocks, especially in crunch time....

c said:

no chance St. Lucy's. Good win on Tuesday but the 7 losses to ranked teams doesnt help.

SGV Volleyball said:

St Lucy's Tara Prater has a dominant jump serve and is a force at the net. Just ask Glendora about her.

TARA PRATER!!!!!

POY!!!!

beachbum said:

I agree with the person who said it is a team sport. Without all the players a team can't win.
Has anyone watched the setter on the Glendora team? She is only a sophomore and with her sets Brain and the other hitters makes the kills. She is also a good blocker with her height.

rovball said:

TARA PRATER has to be the #1 outside in the area and has the best jumpserve. In the big win against Glendora (ranked #1), she was awesome, 17 kills and definitely the best hitter on the court. She's a contender for player of the year if SL continues to win the big games, like DB on Tuesday.

rovbal said:

I agree. What an exciting match. Both teams were outstanding. I thought Silva was the best player on the court for either side. But Stewart(setter for South Hills) was on fire and pushed her team to victory.

dad said:

SH won in 5. 5th game was 18-16. Best game i have ever seen. Walnut Jen Silva did a great job. With the rest of all the girls on both teams

curious said:

Does anyone know who won the volleyball game between SH and Walnut?

rbi said:

Erin Noriega is the top libero in the area. At home or away she plays with the same effectiveness. Offense wins games but defense wins championships. If Glendora gets a share of the Sierra league title it will be because of Erin Noriega

chinohills said:

I agree, Randi Toomay is the glue to the GHS team, anyone whos played them can see that. She plays the whole game, and did some setting too i beleive

SL Fan said:

All these names that are being mentioned are some great choices.

But just a reminder that this a team sport and no one would be where they are at without the support of their team.

ghsfan said:

randi is very good player! great attacker and serves excellent very nice girl!

Comments on Randi Toomay from Glendora?

Rose Colored Glasses said:

Aguilera, team MVP? Yeah... I don't think so. Defense has been the biggest hole on that team and she is the leader. She played great the first two sets against Glendora, but fell apart in sets 3 & 4 almost costing the match. Very inconsistent.

c said:

Regarding liberos, I have seen most of the top teams in the area and I think most of the top ranked teams have very strong liberos. But I have to agree with the previous blogger, in my opinion, the top liberos are the Walnut and Glendora liberos. They are followed closely by the Diamond Bar and South Hills liberos.

vballer said:

Christine Aguilera is a wonderful young lady but I do not think she is the top libero in the area.

I think top contenders are Erin Noriega (Glendora) and Delilah Arenas (Walnut).

SL's recent success is the team is playing as a team. However, their defense including libero is not there. How many missed tipped balls did they have against Diamond bar and Glendora. It is very inconsistent.

yes we finally beat San Dimas the game was amazing and nerve wrecking i had so much fun like i told coach Mcgaha by the time it was 3rd period man was i nervous i didnt think that i would be able to be ok for the game but i was like this is what we always wanted and this is what we are gonna get so we showed san dimas what we are made of we brought it to them and finished them in 4 was that a hell of a game but now we are both tied for 1st we have two games left in league we have to finish those off strong and hopefully our dream will come true be league champs !!!!!
but yeah good luck to all teams
GIANTS Wooooooo!

landin11 said:

YEah WE BEAT SAN DIMAS SHAKE IN THEIR FACE ....

Steve said:

You have to look at Christine Aguilera of St Lucy's as one of the dominant Liberos in the area. Without her St Lucy's wouldn't have a chance of winning the league. She is the most consistant player at St Lucy's and the MVP of the team. She should be in consideration for the leagues MVP.

volnut said:

Although they haven't been to number 1, Walnut has been the most consistent and highest ranking team in the valley all year. I believe they have been ranked number 2 each week for the entire season. Because of this fact I think you have to look closely at awarding Player of the year to Jennifer Silva or Samantha Sheller.

Vballerdude said:

SH is a good team, but they are a very good VB team when they utilize Gomez' talent. They could go far if they take advantage of her game and what she brings to the team. If they do, she will without a doubt be the area's top dog.

VBall Fan said:

Courtney Donaldson I think is the best overall player in the valley.

Jessica Dimitruk (Diamond Bar) and Megan Callen (St. Lucy's) stands out as better middle blockers from the Sierra League than Brain. Callen (SL) and Dimitruk (DB)shut her down in the last two weeks. Brain had a strong start but has not been consistent when her team has needed her most.

Melinda Gomez is always a fan favorite when it comes to middle blocker position.

Tara Prater from SL is another force to recognize as well. She gets better and stronger with each game

Erin Noriega (Libero) from Glendora definitely. Most athletic libero in the area.

Cassandra Mommah (Diamond Bar) has shown great intensity when it comes down to wire. She has become the go to person in the pivotal games.

GHigh said:

I would put Ganesha's Junior Marcy Moreno as one of the best MB's in the area. 27 kills vs. San Dimas and she always plays steady. Our Senior OH Mayela Ontiveros has also dominated as well as our libero Brittany Rodriguez.

DB Pride said:

I would vote for Jamie Parke and Cassandra Momah also. They are also two of the nicest people you will ever meet.

michelled said:

vbrain has had low stats lately

VBALLFAN! said:

I think Valerie Brain is the best player in the sierra league and one of the best in California! She has a really good sense of what she has to do on the court. All I know is that many colleges will want her.

*Give her the player of the year title!!*

vbl fan said:

Think you have to give a nod to Tara Prater for outside from SL's. Melinda Gomez best middle, Callen from SL's 2nd team. Max-Prep doesn't list a roster and I don't know her name, but the Libero from Glendora was very good. I think Donaldson from Bonita best all-around player.

vbl said:

wow, Im suprised Patrick. You usually arent "pro" Diamond Bar.

This is a pretty good list with a couple of juniors. Sheller and Gomez are, and I think Brain is too. Lots of talent returning next year.
