What's wrong with South Hills?

Yes, they're 4-1. Yes, they're the No. 1 team in the Southeast Division. But why doesn't this feel like a South Hills year? Well, since he was close to the situation in recent years, I thought I'd let the Scouting Guru tackle this subject.

Breaking Down South Hills, from the Guru...

People ask us how we formulate our opinions on players and sometimes teams. Well, since we have the game footage, we like to break it down as much as possible. Especially when it comes to the quarterback position. So, we are going to try this out for the week and if you like it, we'll breakdown a team each week and go inside the numbers. For our initial dive into the waters, let's breakdown South Hills, since we have all the game footage (and yes everyone, we have every game on the Boys from Barranca) to do this. So here we go. Well start on the offensive side of the ball.

Offensive:

You will not find a more balanced team year in and year than the Huskies. According to Maxpreps.com. the Huskies are passing for 560 yards and rushing for 510 yards. While our numbers may be off by a yard here and there, were on the same page. But when you look inside the numbers, there are some real interesting facts.

Run Plays
Down and Distance Plays Yards Avg. TD's

1st and 10 78 471 6.03 3

2nd Down 41 140 3.41 3

3rd Down 16 8 2 0

4th Down 1 -6 -6 0

Pass Plays
Down and Distance Plays Comp. % Yards avg TD - Int.

1st and 10 14-27 51.8 193 13.7 2--0
2nd Down 20-34 58.8 255 12.75 5--1
3rd Down 17-28 60.7 202 11.88 0--1
4th Down 3--4 75 39 13

3rd Down Conversion 13-46 (28%)
4th Down Conversion 3-5 (60%)

Comments: I noticed on the Saturday morning blog that someone said that SH was soft up front. Well when you are averaging 6.03 yards a play rushing the ball on first day, believe me...you are not soft. That is the first clue for us in knowing whether you have a good offensive line of not. It makes life much easier for a offensive coordinator when you can call 2nd and 4 or 5 rather than 2nd and 9 or 10. And in the case of the Huskies, 2nd and medium (which we consider anything from 4 to 6 yards) and has been money for the Husky passing game. Deen is 11-16 for 155 yards in this situation. It gets even better on 3rd and medium when Deen is 7-8 for 51 yards. The numbers drop off when the Huskies are in 2nd and Long and 3rd and Long sitiuations. The most glaring stat that has to be improved is the 3rd down conversation situations. The Huskies are a glaring 13-46 for 28% on third down. That must improve. But, at least SH is 3-5 on 4th down conversions. In our opinion, when you look at the numbers, Deen is doing just fine. And here is one other number to grade Deen on; South Hills is 4-1.

Now, let's take a look at the defense

Run Plays
Down and Distance Plays Yards Avg. TD's

1st and 10 73 200 2.7 0
2nd Down 46 317 6.8 3
3rd Down 23 111 4.8 0
4th Down 4 -1 -0.2 0

Pass Plays
Down and Distance Com/Att. Comp. % Yards Avg. TD's/Int's

1st and 10 9--20 45 137 15.2 1--1
2nd Down 10--30 33.3 203 20.3 1--2
3rd Down 6--26 23.07 109 18.1 1--0
4th Down 1--6 16.6 13 13 0--0

3rd Down Conversion 11-49 (22%)
4th Down Conversion 2-10 (20%)

Comments: We thought that this defense was going to be real good this year and so far they are fulfilling their end of the deal. The first number that jumps off the screen are how teams are doing running the ball on 1st and 10. When you breakdown that number even further, in the last three games, the Huskies are yielding a sick 1.3 avg rushing YPG. That is stingy! But, things break down on 2nd down when teams decide to run the ball. That has to be improved. What really caught our eye in the passing game stats are that opponents are 0-6 in 2nd and short situations , and on 3rd and long...opponents are 3-16 for 70 yards. What clearly stood out the sheet when you look at it is that the Husky defense are getting teams off the field. When the opponents 3rd down conversion numbers are 11-49 for 22%, that is really impressive.

Conclusion: We told you that this was one of the top defenses in the area and the numbers prove it. There is motto that "offenses wins games, defenses win championships." Well, South Hills is going to try to prove that true again. And if they continue to hold teams to under 2 yards rushing on first down, their chances are going to be very good The offense has to get rolling on third down and keep their drives alive. If not...well, you really don't want your defense on the field all night...right?

None of them were disciplined. They didn't get benched for anytime at all. They started the game and played throughout the entire game.

Yeah. The story is true that South Hills football players went to see the Dodger game instead of showing up to practice. The thing was that three players were involved and not two. Two starting offensive lineman and the starting quarterback.

NOW LET ME BREAK IT DOWN''''S.HILLS FOOTBALL IS SURELY NOT WHAT WE ALL REMEMBER IN YEARS PAST.ITS BECAUSE OF THE NEW CLASS OF PLAYERS.I EITHIER COACHED OR WATCHED MOST OF THE PLAYERS ON THE TEAM GROW UP TO WHAT THEY ARE TODAY.I REMEMBER ONE OF THOSE PLAYERS WETTING HIS PANTS & CRYING IN POP WARNER BALL.THEY ARE GOOD KIDS BUT NOT VERY PHYSICAL PLAYERS LIKE S.HILLS HAVE HAD IN THE PAST.NOT ONLY THAT IF THEY HAVE $ THEY WILL FIND A PLACE FOR THEM ON THE TEAM.AS LONG AS THEIR PARENTS CONTRIBUTE $ TO THE PROGRAM.[OR IF YOUR DAD IS THE STORE MANAGER @CHICKS SPORTING GOODS..RIGHT? THESE DAYS ITS ALL ABOUT $ IN S.HILLS PROGRAM NOT THE DAYS OF OLD WHERE YOU HAD TO HAVE TALENT TO BE A PLAYER ON THE A S.HILLS TEAM.GREED HAS NOW CAUGHT UP WITH THE S.HIILS SPORTS PROGRAMS AND IM NOT SORRY AT ALL FOR THEM .FROM ALL OF US MIDDLE CLASS PEOPLE''

Great post. You summed it up right there. Maybe if we started treating athletes like they did in 1965 they wouldn't be the spoiled selfish unfocused half wits they are today. keep sweeping it under the carpet look the other way till you get your championship.

Deen is def who we thot he was. He just has little to no supporting cast around him. The other two offensive guys who they leaned on last year are gone, and the line is DEF very weak. They have moved kids around left and right to try and figure out how they are stronger, but bottom line is they are just not a good/strong line that can protect Deen like he needs to be protected.

"Run them till i puked"? Sorry to tell you guy, but this isn't 1965 anymore. A lot of these kids dedicate their whole summer, obviously all of fall and most of the off-season to the team. And that not only goes for Deen, but a lot of these kids. Ya, they should be disciplined, but cmon guy. Cut the kids a lil slack, because bottom line is they are kids.

At the end of the day SH was DEF overrated going into the season, and they are still trying to find their identity, but by the end of the season the coaching staff will have them decently prepared for the playoffs.

I don't know if they are overrated but they never beat anybody better than them. Bogan is a two face. I Heard Deen and one of the OL missed practice to go to a Dodger game. Also heard they are only sitting out for a quarter. Great discipline. If I were a coach I would bench them for the game and run them till I puked. I mean aren't they playing Nogales? If they are great they can beat Nogales without their QB right? BTW - nice leadership out of your QB.

King STUD...we agreeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!

Don't you love the way they have hikacked the Dodgers LA logo.

I especially like it when it's on shaved heads. Nothing says civic pride like the LA on the skull.

Or if we want to get a little risque...on the cleavage. Nothing says HOT like the Momma representing as only a mother can.....booyah. Is that what they mean by tit for tat?

Or the Stripper in training....LA on the booty, otherwise known as the "TRAMP STAMP"!

Raiders long losing streak is Karma for selling out to the lowlifes that destroy everything they touch.

No wonder O'Malley left!

Any of you people ever sit in the outfield of dodger stadium? Those fans make Raider fans look like Mother Theresa! It seems after the Faiders moved back to Oakland the gang element decided to migrate over to dodger stadium. I have also sat in the outfield at an Angels game and the fans can be boisterous but no where near the act at dodger stadium. It's a better class of people in Anaheim.

hey lip richard says who?

hey KID! get a grip and get off the blog. this is a adults only place.

HUSKY HATER..."sucks" BUTT"...you got issues my man!

SHHS FOOTBALL TEAM JUST SUCKS THEY ARE SO OVERRATED .... CAMRON DEAN IS A POP WARNER QB AND THEY HAVE NO HALF BACKS WORTH A CRAP,AND WE ALL KNOW THEY HAVE A JERK OFF AS A COACH{BOGAN}..NO OFFENSE TO COACH SMITTY...THEY ARE PANZYS THAT ARE AFFRIAD TO MAKE HITS..THEY SUCK ...W.C PLEASE KICK THEIR BUTTS ..

The Dodger Bashing comes most likely from a Angels fan. Remember who went further this year and tell me which team at home right now would not have wanted to be a position to play in a championship series to advance to the Word Series. The Dodgers came up empty but there they were center stage in a championship series for the NL Pennant. Whats wrong with making the final four. Nothing to hang your head about. All Dodger fans are not Mexican. The Mexican fans we do have are the most loyal to the ballclub and cheer just like the next guy. This coming from a African American Fan.

dude dodgers suck
do you have a life?
must you post the same thing on ALL the threads?

What's wrong with SH?

They were over rated from the start and the balanced team in this division will win the championship
GURU, you simply are wrong. Look at the offensive stats against how many good teams? Deen was way over hyped and SH has a horrible rushing team. The passing game is average at best. "Maxpreps.com. the Huskies are passing for 560 yards and rushing for 510 yards" What is this stat all about? How about 133 rushing yards per game and 143 passing yards per game. You may call that balanced for SH, but that performance won’t get you deep in playoffs. Get real dude, when you hit teams like CO, its lights out again.

I would bet WC takes league this year.

Once again another Frank Cornona, and King Stud rehash.

Get a life you two.

How sweet it was to watch all the fat, drunk, LA Dodgers fans get on the bus back to Tijuana with their husbands too. Gotta love Furcal's three errors and the five seconds Fox showed him picking his nose better than he did ground balls. Nice hitting Kent, you red neck. Sorry to all of you, especially that biased hack who does hs sports. LA teams just don't crack it, besides USC! Lakers, UCLA and the Dodgers just aren't good enough. Deal with it.
Adios.

The question is "What's wrong with South Hills?" I think the answer is far more simple than all the number crunching performed by the Guru. It is... they're not as good as thought at the beginning of the season. Let's face it, the bar was pretty high for SHHS and I can recall reading on this very blog that some expected them to be the best team in the valley... or at least compete with CO for the honor. Well, as it's turned out, CO has done what has been expected, Amat has done more than was expected, and San Dimas looks unstopable - at least against the teams they've played.

Here's the bottom line - SHHS is doing just fine. They are winning, albiet not in a powerful way ala San Dimas. They will be in the race at the end and how well they do in the long haul is anyone's guess at this point.

SHHS is good, they're just not great... at least not yet.

the answer is in the picture.. the right tackle is falling backwards behind deen, bringing the deffensive end with him! no time, and no where to run. shhs was exposed in week 1. bring everyone up the middle! putting pressure on our entire offense. i'm sure we'll "adjust". i also believe that deen has carried around a bit of a target on his back this year. there has been alot of pressure put on this young man to perform on the field at a higher level than others. i think he's doing fine. once he's able to feel "comfortable", he'll be fantastic, for sure.

bogan and his staff live, and love this kind of challenge!

and the cupcake schedule talked about by people may be just that, "talk". yeah, duarte was a joke. and hopefully nogales will be too. everyone else has been or will be bringing it when they play shhs. and, we'll be ready!!!!

fight on dogs!!! take it to the house!!!

James, it's obvious why you STILL contiune to have faith in SH.

As stated, stats against weak teams can't make the agrument.
3rd downs are generally what kind of call? Deen is simply not the player you thought back in the summer.

You need more time before you really can be called a GURU.

sgu guru. let's put you to the yest. damein and morrison seems to get a pass annually given the talent base they generate every year. aram was a big "morrison is a great guy' apologist for a private school conpeting in a public school league. this year damein has a good chance of going 2-8. recently bloggers have brought up the lack of preparation and fundamentals by the coaching staf fand the players. others have asserted that damein could go undefeated in league. somethings not kosher at damein. which is it guru? let's put the scope on damein and for once get an objective and profesional view of the program. maybe after your analysis the damein parents, and one in particular, will finally shut the hell up! So guru are you and your irganization up to the task or will tenderfoot the damein mystique as well? that's a tuff assignment guru. after one practice you might want to pass. credibility is on the line.

So Hills is clearly not the same and altho sputtering still is 4-1. A Cupcake schedule will get you that. Their RC tie was the best team they have played. Throw all the stats around as much as you like, but the answer is real simple. There is no Amat transfer this year in the ability of Dorian Wells. He set the bar high last year and they almost won it all. This year they are normal and Deen altho good is not great like some seem to think. I see them doing well in the San Antonio but I dont know if they can run the table there with Rowland, Walnut and West Covina better prepared this year. To sum it up a playoff spot yes,a first round win yes, and then a second round exit. They are not what they used to be and next year the fall off will be worse even with some talent returning. "UNLESS" the recruiting kicks into gear and they can land another big name player to boost them. The cupboard is running bare over off Barranca.
