Guerrero wins his appeal, will play
Workman High School sophomore Cezar Guerrero won his appeal to the state board, making the highly touted guard eligible to play for the Lobos basketball team this season.
Over the summer Guerrero applied for a "hardship transfer," from St. John Bosco, but his hardship was denied by CIF, citing "undue influence." Workman coach Martin Flores had also coached Guerrero in club basketball, which led to the "undue influence" ruling, which was overturned last week. "What it means is that he (Guerrero) took the appeal in front of the state board and a hearing panel overturned the (CIF) commissioner's (James Staunton) ruling," CIF spokesperson Thom Simmons said. Guerrero, one of the best young prospects in the Southern Section, is a 5-foot-11 playmaker that made an immediate impact as a freshman at powerful St. John Bosco. He averaged nearly 17 points while playing in the tough Trinity League, which features some of the state's best teams like Mater Dei, Santa Margarita and Serra. Guerrero scored 22 points against Serra and 19 against eventual state champion Mater Dei in league games last year.

neither miles nor guerrrero live in the city of industry! come on CIF do some research! this is an absolute infringement of CIF rules!
ok..... i'm tired of all of you and your negative thoughts and comments about workman high school. i bet most of you have never even step onto that campus. just because the athletic program is top notch, doesn't mean they suck. The coaches at workman are REAL coaches and believe in the talent they have. they don't need to recruit players like amat, south hills, los altos, and etc. CJ was not recruited, but he was welcomed. I'm a proud alumni of the class of 07 at workman. i was recruited my sophmore year by west covina high school. i went for the remainder of my sophmore year, then transferred back to workman. most students like workman. its a nice small school and you're not treated like just another student there. west covina was too crowded, and they only cared about you if you were an athlete. I was one of those cared about. Workman has many talented freshman who by there junior year are recruited and starting at other schools. why don't you get the know the school and environment before you go bashing on the old history.
out with the old, in with the new. the lobos will talk and answer their critics on the court.
Fred
What is happing with the baseball player from West Covina that tranfer over to South Hills to play baseball. Is CIF going to let him play this year. I think his name was Jake something.

Preps: Recruitment violation results in suspensions
El Rancho coaches suspended
Fred J. Robledo Staff Writer
PICO RIVERA -- El Rancho High School head football coach Willie Reyna and defensive coordinator Brian Zavala have been suspended from Friday's home game against Santa Fe that will decide the Del Rio League championship. The suspensions were announced by the CIF-Southern Section office in response to the coaches violating a rule that prohibits them from contacting students attending other schools.
Reyna, whose suspension began with last Friday's game, also will sit out this Friday's game but will be allowed to return for the playoffs.
Zavala is suspended for the remainder of the season.
In accordance with its policy, the CIF declined to name the coaches and other school involved.
El Rancho principal Julie Ellis confirmed that Reyna and Zavala were the coaches suspended and that the player attends Workman High, where Zavala was the defensive coordinator last season.
According to a CIF press release, an investigation by El Rancho administrators concluded that the Workman player sought information about El Rancho's athletic program and talked to the coaches involved. The student did not transfer, but the contact violated the "undue influence" rule.
In announcing the suspensions, the CIF praised school administrators for their work in investigating the violation and for their cooperation with the CIF office.
"The administration and staff at El Rancho High School should be commended for their thorough work on this matter and their honesty in dealing with what amounted to a technical violation of the rule," said CIF-SS Commissioner of Athletics Dr. Jim Staunton.
"Our Section is interested in enforcing Rule 510 because every one of our students should make his choice of schools based solely on the basis of academics, without athletic pressure. We believe there was a violation of the letter of the rule and there should be a consequence."
Reyna has led the Dons to a 6-3 record in his first year as head coach. The former Arroyo High quarterback previously was the freshman football coach at Arroyo.
Reached by telephone at the school on Monday, Reyna refused to comment. When asked who will coach the team Friday, he responded, "I'd rather not talk about it."
"Our two coaches understand the seriousness of the violation and accept the consequences of their actions," Ellis said. "They are good men who exercised an error in judgment. I believe they have the best interests of our kids at heart and I am confident they will continue to move our football program forward."
According to a Workman athletic official, the investigation began after another Workman player, senior James Woods, transferred to El Rancho this season. Because Zavala had moved from Workman to El Rancho over the summer, members of the CIF rules committee looked into the matter.
Woods' transfer was in accordance with CIF rules. But during the investigation, officials learned that another Workman player had been in contact with the two El Rancho coaches.
According to Workman coach Jarret Myers, the unnamed Lobos player is a starting senior.
"(The suspensions) do not surprise me," Myers said. "In the past, Workman players have been recruited by other schools. I'm glad that someone decided to finally put a stop to it."
Fred, there are some real disrespectful people in here that don't know a thing about this kid. Obviously, Guerrero must have made a strong case to CIF to have the ruling overturned. I was at Workman's fundraiser Power 106 basketball game last Thursday and this team is for real. Guerrero and Miles are impressive but there are some others that will make this team one of the best in the Valley. I have heard about some great things going on at Workman and it's great to see good things happen to good people. Coach Flores, Cezar Guerrero, and others associated with the team and the school are good people and it's finally time that they get a break. Did someone really mention Nogales??? C'mon now.....
Fred, I look forward to your coverage of this Lobo basketball team this year.
Probably because you're too lazy to do it yourself.
I dont know if you heard, but Cezar also makes a wonderful quesadilla and does an outstanding job mowing my lawn and washing my car.
No worries. consider it a gift. I'll be waiting for mine at Christmas.
Well Joe, the headline didn't say, "Breaking News," now did it?
Have you guys actually seen Cezar(CJ) play?? i have like 10 times this summer when he played on Belmont Shore Elite and in camps. He is good, he is explosive, has some of the sickiest handles i have ever seen. He can pass and get to the rim.
His shot is suspect sometimes, needs to work on that. He has a crappy attitude and cares about himself too much, as shown by him taking contested shots instead of dishing it off to teamates who are going to louisville, duke and arizona. He needs to balance when to step up and when to step down. He is the man at workman and will do whatever he wants
Freddy,
... and I get NO love for breaking the story !:?)
Seriously, I'm glad the system worked *exactly* the way it is supposed to.
Under the new protocol a transfer in these circumstances (prior contact) is ineligible UNLESS they can show cause why they should be. On appeal, apparently they satisfied that.
The Grass is not always greener on the other side, but Workman? That grass has been dry since day one. This is not a good choice for this kid, unless he is going there because the classes will be that much easier to pass so he can play ball. I mean of all schools Workman? if you are going to pick a low scale school then Nogales made sense but Workman? come on Workman? More like the Hobos instead of the Lobos.
cjpackfan,
Not to nit-pick, but Paul Pierce played at Inglewood all 4 years which, while not light years away from Gardena, is certainly not Serra either.
Fred, please don't confuse the uninformed, the Trinity league has JSerra of San Clemente as a member not Serra, which is in Gardena, although both teams are very good, Paul Pierce played at Serra, they are light years apart in every way.
Dr. Evil
Did you not read the story?
He transfered to be with his previous travel team coach.
Anybody know what city he claims as residence?
Why in the world would you transfer to Workman??!!
Maybe, I don't know, I'll see what other coaches think.
Fredj
Does this throw workman into the top 5 when the basketball rankings come out?
Bobby Miles and Cj Guerrero one of the top backcourts in the valley!....both still underclass men...oh yeah and both once played on martin flores travel team way back! ;)
