Mt. SAC beats Fullerton, 34-27, in 2OT

Mt. SAC will take the field against Fullerton College today in the CCCAA Southern California Regional semifinals at Cal State Fullerton.
I'm covering the game, and will provide scoring updates for those of you who can't make it. Just click the thread

12:48 p.m.: OK, I safey made it to Cal State Fullerton, and we are about 10 minutes away from kickoff. The scoreboard is not yet on, but everything else seems like a go.
1:10: Mt. SAC went three and out on its opening possession. Fullerton had one first down, but punted. The Hornets received a gift when the punt struck a Mountie player, give Fullerton a first down at the Mt. SAC 37. The Mounties hold again. But Fullerton fakes the punt and Matthew Heady completes a 24-yard pass to Noelin Henry at the 16. The Mounties force a third down, but Jeff Fleming tossed 15 yards to Daryl Shine for a 7-0 lead with about eight minutes left in the quarter.

1:28: Fullerton, aided by a high snap from punt formation that resulted in a punt of minus-17 yards to the Mt. SAC 38, drives to the 13 where Fleming tosses to the right to Ray Magee, who breaks two tackles en route to the end zone for a 14-0 lead with two minutes left in the quarter

1:34: And the first quarter ends with Fullerton up 14-0.

2:00: The scoreboard is finally operational, but so far the Mt. SAC offense is not. The Mounties, still trailing 14-0, have just two first downs...As we write that, Nick Lamaison connects to Michael Edwards for 25 yards, then passes 11 yards to Jesse Canada at the 24. Lamaison has Edwards at the 5, but the ball skips off his hands. Another pass to Edwards is high on third and 7 from the 21, so Mt. SAC will have to settle for a field goal. But the snap is high and holder Robert Mata takes, rolls right and hits Jon Joe on the right side, who sprints in for a 21-yard TD and its 14-7 with 2:32 left in the half.

2:26: Mt. SAC gets the ball on its 40 with 16 seconds left in the half. Is it time to take a knee? Not these guys. Lamaison lofts a pass up for grabs. The Mounties' Matt Austin outleaps Fullerton's Aaron Harris at the Hornet 40 and goes the distance for a 60-yard TD play. But Mt. SAC is called for excess celebration, forcing Jacob Harfman to try the conversion from the 25...the kick is wide and we go to the half with Fullerton clinging to a 14-13 lead.

2:45: Fullerton opens the second half with an impressive drive. Fleming completes passes of 16 and 18 yards to Dameron Fooks. But Kevin Robinson fumbles after a 17-yard gain to the 21 and Mt. SAC's Anress Ikner recovers.

3:00: But Lamaison gives it right back, as Lee Aguirre makes a diving interception at the Fullerton 37. The Mounties hold, but Dominique Gaisie tries to field a short punt on a bounce, he fumbles and Fullerton recovers at the Mountie 30. Mt. SAC holds again and DeJon Miller attempts a 39-yard field goal...No, Fullerton goes for it and Fleming connects with Magee for 13 yards down to the 10. Magee then beats Gaise on a fade route to push the lead to 20-13 with 8:59 left. Mt. SAC blocked the conversion attempt, making it just a 7-point lead.

3:03: The real Mounties show up. Lamaison completes three short passes for a combined 22 yards before Isaac Garcia goes for 7 yards to the 29 and Burton Iosefa runs off right tackle and shoots to the end zone to tie it at 20 with 7:10 left in the third quarter.

3:25: Mt. SAC, getting a 39-yard catch and run from Edwards, drives 84 yards to the Fullerton 6. But Lamaison lofts a pass in the end zone and its picked off by Alex Valdez with five seconds left in the quarter. The quarter ends and its still tied at 20.

3:42: Fullerton drives 71 yards and takes a 27-20 lead with 6:06 to play as Jeremy La France makes a diving TD catch on a first and 10 from the 19.

4:50: Sorry for the delay, but I had to go down to the field for the final five minutes, and it didn't look good for Mt. SAC, which took the field without Lamaison, who was injured. Step in freshman Tyler Vanderzee, who looked like two-year starter, commonly driving the Mounties from their 13 to the 36. He then his Edwards on crossing patter, good enough for a 33-yard gain down to the 3 with less than three minutes to play. He then forces overtime, hitting Edwards on a soft out pattern at the goal line to tie at 27 with 2:14 to play. The Mounite defense then takes over in the overtime, getting two sacks to shutout Fullerton in the first overtime. Harfman misses a 40-yard field goal. But the offense has is back as three Iosefa carries take it down to the 3, where two Garcia runs give Mt. SAC a 34-27 lead. The defense, getting another sack, forces a fourth and 11 from the 36, and an incomplete pass to win it and advance the Mounties to the regional finals.

KS:
Thanks for the support. The only point I will make is that as a player, you should always compete as hard as you can on the field, but when the game is over, win or lose, you go shake your opponent's hand. As a fan, root as hard as you can, but when the game is over, give props to both teams, competitors. I covered other auto racing, where it literally is a matter of life and death. When you see young competitors like Eric Medlen, Darrell Russell or Scott Kalitta lose their lives, it puts everything else in perspective.

GOOD LUCK TO LEE AGUIRRE! HE HAD AN OUTSTANDING YEAR

Whoa there cowboys !

In defense of the king Stud, I have to say that he got it pretty much right on the money there.

Where do you go if you have no depth ?

Let me remind you all that the quaterback poisition is the most important "skill" position in the sport of football. Without a quality QB, a team can really suffer.

Case in point. Just look at what happened to Oregon last year once their star QB went down. A team that was possibly destined to play for the national champinship did'nt even win its own confrence last year.

Unfortunaly, this season is a wash for the Bruins, what can you say ? However, perhaps they will do better next year. We shall see.

King Inserts Foot AGAIN

I tend to think that Pete Carroll took a look and past.
King Stud I have been reading some of your post in the past. Believe me your no football genius either by any means so I wouldn't be knocking someone else's football knowledge.

King Stud again you continue to show your own lack of football knowledge. Pete Carroll would even have a kid like Craft on his ball club. So much for your knowledge.

DDoooohhhhhhhhh

If you got the D1 talent
they will find you, it doesn't have to be the big schools.
West Covina's Walter Thurmond is having a fine PAC 10 career with the Oregon Ducks, He just got another interception and returned it for a touchdown yesterday to help Oregon in a 65 to 38 win over Oregon St.
William Wallace from West Covina is also getting some limited playtime for the Ducks as a redshirt Freshman.

Thank you for showing your total lack of football knowledge. What is UCLA suppost to do put in a 4th string QB or maybe a cheerleader?

Pete Carroll has built a winning program and can go deeper on the depth chart than UCLA does. Rome was not build in a day and you can't expect the Bruins to be rebuilt in one season with a 3rd string QB. Most college coaches are given anywhere from 2 to 5 years to rebuild a program. Neuheisel did it at Washington and Colorado and will do it at UCLA given the chance. Keep posting and showing your lack of football smarts. It's making me laugh.

Do you think for one moment that Pete Carroll would stick with a guy just because he had class but wasnt getting the job done, hell no.
Its guys like heckle king stud that seperate USC the haves from UCLA the have nots while continuing to accept mediocrity on the field if rick continues to make bonehead moves like kc then expect them to be shown the door in another two or three years because he already wasted one of those years

by the way exactly was your point? To bash Steve and the UCLA program? How about some suggestions for improvement? Did you expect Neuheisel to work a miracle in year one? You gotta love critical fans!

Heckle and King Stud if all you have for excuses is poor O-line this and Poor coaching that, well I've pretty much made my case.
Thanks that was an easy one!

Mr Classless
Why the harsh words for Steve? After reading your comments I also uddered your phrase " My goodness". If you follow the UCLA program you know that Craft was tossed into the starting position because of QB injuries. Did you expect someone who was 3rd string QB to step into the lineup and light up the top D1 colleges? Also the UCLA offensive line couldn't protect an old lady walking across the street. Any QB in that system unless he can run for his life wouldn't be successful. Craft has had a lousy season but if you played behind that O-line you wouldn't do much better.
A lot of what you said in your post is true about Craft not being ready but he is a class kid. You want to know about Craft's character go read an LA times article written yesterday by the usually negative and scarastic TJ Simers. Craft showed major class after having a horrible performance vs Arizona State. UCLA should be proud to have a class guy at QB.

Am I wrong or are you one of those alumni who donates money then sits on the sidelines being critical of everything? If you don't like what's happening just don't donate. You could always donate to a winning program across town! ha ha

Coming on this blog to bash Steve for defending Craft makes you look foolish. No one is defending his play and Steve wasn't either. I heard a saying that "Sports is the toy of life". It is a business but unless you are the CEO sit back relax and have fun!

Mr. Classless,

I too am a Bruin fan.
You cant put the blame on Kevin. Name anyone who could preform at the level you expect in their first year at a D-1 level. UCLAs entire O sucks. Peyton Manning would struggle behind that O line. Kevin has been running for his life all year. You must have bought into Rick Nuehisels (sp)bull sh**. UCLA's O sucks, Norm Chow sucks,(admit it),Coaching sucks. I have an idea! Lets blame Kevin for all of UCLA problems. You sir, truly have no class.
GO BRUINS

Amat gives kids more exposure and more of a chance at making it to the next level. You also have to play at a higher level since the competition is higher which makes the big boys work harder. That's why you see more Lineman from Amat earn D 1 scholarships than any other school in the Valley. Bennett was rotting at Azusa High and now has his college paid for. Same thing with Bowens going to UCLA.

Steven,
Go back to covering the local little league All-star teams for the Highlander. Ramirez has always tried to knock down Amat.

Mr Ramirez,

I beg your pardon sir, but I bet I have been a Bruin fan and season ticket holder longer than you. In fact I bet I have ten years on you as season ticket holder even before you were kicking slants out of your crib and could even find your way down into the Arroyo Seco.

Son you’re telling me to show some class. How about showing us some class and just admit that you’re in the tank for this kid that has no business at this level. Or do I have to throw his numbers in your face to make you believe it. After all you are covering the kids Dad ball club and most likely you have a relationship with Coach Kraft. If having a different opinion than yours about a player is your definition of classless then that’s ok being called that by you. But admit your bias and show some class and admit you’re in the tank.

‘He is a good kid, and he is trying his best” what does that have to do with anything? If you know who Beaver Clever was, he was a good kid too. Hey Steve sorry to break it to ya buddy but being a good kid doesn’t cut it when your playing the likes of USC, Oklahoma, Texas, Florida and your goal is a National Championship. Your playing for a university who tells it’s alumni that they are making big changes to the football program and want you to donate to the cause and then they put crap like this Craft kid on the field. Give me a frecking break Ramirez this is the big time not some high school game you’re so used to covering. He’s making mistakes that he should not be at this level. He’s not ready for this level. PERIOD STEVE! He couldn’t cut it in San Diego and he’s surely not cutting it here! But that’s ok he’s a good kid!

And here is the telling statement about you Mr. Ramirez “I've never understand why people get so worked up in sports. Yes, root for your team, but do it with some class, and remember that at the end of the day, it's just a sporting event.”

Well Mr. Ramirez if you don’t understand maybe you should transfer out of covering college sports and just stick to the high school and JC stuff. That seems to be more of your forte. These aren’t high school kids these are men in big time college sports which is a business Steve, obviously you have no clue about that at all because after all…….. you know “it’s just a sporting event” right?.

My Goodness!

Joe Amat,

I don't it matters what high school a kid goes to. If you have the talent to play Division I college football, and you have the grades, you'll get an offer.
Playing 8-man football for La Jolla Country Day didn't stop Colorado from offering Rashaan Saalam. It just happens the best players go to a Bishop Amat, or a Mater Dei, but there have been players from the non-traditional powers who have played D-I ball.

ALTSTH:
It's obvious you are not a true Bruin fan. I'm a season-ticket holder as well and will go the games as long as it doesn't interfere with work.
Another thing, try showing some class. No one is arguing that Kevin Craft is having a good year, he's not. But he is a good kid, and he is trying his best, and you have to agree that it's not his fault alone. I've never understand why people get so worked up in sports. Yes, root for your team, but do it with some class, and remember that at the end of the day, it's just a sporting event.

Chip,
Da Missles momma is white. Just like our President elect. If you watched the Chappelle show, you would know Mikey was drafted by the white people. He's ours.lol.

ITSAllGood....

D1 is a total different ball game from jc football...

You just made the understatement of the year!

Hey Chip,
Kevin Craft yeah Chip Kevin Craft frecking Daddy's Boys!
Thanks Chip thank's frecking lot for passing on this JC loser to us.
If he couldn't compete at SDSU then he should have just left well enough alone. But no Daddy has connections with Chow.
You know Norm the guy that brought Craft in and is now walking around campus with frecking egg all over his face.
If I were from Mt. Sac I wouldn't be bragging about Craft at the D1 level because he sucks! If he plays next year do you think I going to waste my time getting into the Rose Bowl to see him again.
Yeah Right I don't think So.

When you make a comment about JC Football not able to compete with Div 1 football you are a real fan and not a player. JC football is actually the most competitive football there is, especially when it comes to Southern California, WE have put more Professional football players in the League than DIV 1 football, check your stats cool cat. Mike Edwards aka Da Missle will match up with any Freshman in this country oh yeah did I mention football is his second sport, You are watchen the second coming of Pete Rose on the baseball field, it is Pure Art watching this young student athlete play baseball. You ask the question, Where have all the black baseball players gone? Here he comes, and his name is Da Missle.

South El Monte H.S. has 4 starters on defense at Fullerton. Lee Aguirre who had 2 picks, Armando Villa, Joe Morales, and Juan Perez. All played extremely well throughout the season and it will be great to see where Lee and Mando end up next season.

Joe Amat

Yeah, who says JC football isn't a way to go.. These guys should end up somewhere after Mt Sac.

And how about Bronze Whitem over at Citrus. Kid lead in tackles and I think received conference honors..

Recruiters, yeah they get it right all the time. LOL

Good job boys!

lol
forgetta bout it
he/she of whom ypu speak of led mt sac to the championship...
D1 is a total different ball game from jc football...

As a Bruin season ticket holder I'd like to forget about Mt.Sac at this moment in time! If you know what I mean.

South Hills to Glendora
South Hills to Duarte
West Covina to San Dimas - Touchdown!

It's great to see these guys play together and contribute at the next level.

How are athletes like Jon Joe and Mikey Edwards NOT recruited to the D1 level out of HS. You could see Michael was going to be good when he'd run around the Lancer gym after games watching his bro play hoops for the Lancers. And Jon Joe was a better HS athlete than anyone Amat had (OK - maybe except for Jon Cornell, who starts at LB for Ole Miss and played GREAT this season for the bowl bound Rebels.. but even that's debateable)

Gotta say it though, if they played for Amat they'd have been top recruits early on. That's just the way it is.

Go Mounties!

keep it comin steve

lets get a all conference list for mt sac and citrus !!!support our boys that made it
