San Antonio coin flip results: 1. Rowland, 2. West Covina, 3. South Hills; Also, thoughts from the Guru, and a youth football team being disciplined

SAN ANTONIO COIN FLIP POSTGAME: Wow, here is how it went down. All three flipped, Rowland (8-2, 3-1) was the odd coin and goes to the playoffs as the No. 1 from the San Antonio. Since West Covina (8-2, 2-1) beat South Hills (8-2, 3-1) head to head, West Covina goes as No. 2 and South Hills, No. 1 in the division last week, goes as the No. 3 team from the San Antonio. What does this do to the seedings? A San Antonio team should at least get a No. 4 seed, which means Rowland or West Covina. South Hills, however, will play a first place team in the first round, which means a game against, yes, Muir, Charter Oak, Santa Fe, or Schurr. Heck, if the Huskies get Schurr, this might work out well after all as Bulldogs coach Mike Maggiore put it. "When we won the title in 2004, we won it as a third-place team," he said. "You got to win four games to win it all anyway. There's a lot of good teams here, you just have to take on who they give you." With three teams at 8-2, Snyder feels that Rowland or West Covina should at least get a top four seed. "You've got three teams finishing 8-2," Snyder said. "You've got South Hills beating Ayala and West Covina beating Glendora, both upper-division teams that tied for the Sierra League title. If one of us don't get seeded, it will be hard to make sense of it all."
Rowland punched its ticket with a 49-21 win over Walnut Thursday. If the Raiders had lost, they would have missed the playoffs." Nothing ceases to amaze me anymore," Snyder said. "I still don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing. There are some great third place teams out there like Diamond Ranch and California. You just don't know." Huskies coach Steve Bogan took it all in stride. "If this was my first five years in coaching, I would probably be analyzing it all," Bogan said. "At some point in time you have to play good football teams. My main concern is just getting healthy."

Scouting Guru notes !!!!!: You don't want to miss this, the Guru is breaking everything down, last night's games, tonight's games, it's a must read. He sent this too me at 7 a.m., and you're going to love it. He touches on everything, even answers some bloggers questions. Click this thread you don't want to miss it.

Poor sportsmanship and shots at Snoop Dog! News reporter Jennifer McLain wrote about about the West Covina Bruins junior all-american 12-14 year-olds football team being banned from the playoffs because of poor sportsmanship after a fight erupted earlier this season. You can watch some of what went down, here.

STRAIGHT FROM THE SCOUTING GURU ..
We had a chance to view the South Hills vs. West Covina game and there are a lot key points that have to be digested. Let me first congratulate Mike Maggiore and the rest of the staff at West Covina. What a great job they did Thursday night of holding South Hills down to 10 points (remarkable in that SH was average 30+ points the last four games of the season heading into game).

As the game was unfolding Thursday night, it had the feel of UCLA vs. USC back in 2006. I should know, I was at the game...and you can see my picture on the front page of the Los Angeles Times the next day. South Hills kept West Covina in the game and paid the price for it. And there were several key moments that could have worked out in the Huskies favor. Here are a few...

1) The play-action pass to fullback Charles Ussef in the first quarter that was dropped. If he catches it, he's in the end zone and the cheerleaders are behind the goal posts jumping up and down.

2) The fake field goal in the first half. SH's special teams coach Brian Johnson is one of the best young football minds in the business. He wanted to take a shot with a fake field goal and see if he could get WC sleeping. It didn't happen. Hindsight is always 50/50 but SH could have been better off punting the ball and pinning WC inside the 20. You knew from the start that it was going to be a field position game and play's like that changes the mental part of the game for both sides.

3) The lack of production for South Hills on offense on first down. We mentioned several weeks back that SH was having trouble running the ball on first down. It came back to haunt them on Thursday night. There were too many 1st and 10's that turned out to be second and long's. If SH expects to make a run in the playoffs, they have to do a better job at the point of attack. (If you go back to the UCLA v. USC game in 2006, you'd see a ton of similiarities their as well).

4) The false start late in the fourth quarter. 3rd and one inside the opposition 40 and SH decides to go on two and commits a false start penalty. It came back to haunt them as WC blitz hard on 3rd and six and things went south from there.

5) This was something that I should have foreseen this week. West Covina basically had two weeks to prepare for South Hills. They had a bye week and they played Nogales (which is a half a bye week). Which meant that they got heeled up and were on fresher legs. Meanwhile, South Hills had to go through the meat-grinder against Rowland, got banged up quite a bit and it played a factor Thursday night. Gee, sounds a lot like the New England Patriots.

Meanwhile, a gutty effort was put in by quarterback George Johnson for West Covina. He made the play on 4th down that kept the winning drive alive. He'll be the most popular guy at WCHS today. And Ricky Johnson put in a very solid performance, all in all, it was a great chess match and on this night West Covina got the check mate on South Hills. It's going to be interesting if they meet again.

Meanwhile, over at Bonita we had a feeling that Charter Oak was going to be able to handle Bonita and according to everyone that we have spoken too, that is exactly what happen. We felt that if Bonita didn't stop the run, Charter Oak was going to run the ball until the cows came home. Well, I heard rumors that the cows came home in the fourth quarter and the game was well out of reach. Congrats to Lou Farrer and the rest of the staff for a terrific job Friday night.

Finally, we felt that the Ayala vs. Glendora game was going to be an even game and it was. Glendora pulled it out in the end and full credit goes to HC Mark Pasquarella and his staff for a job well done. It's good the see quality people getting success.

As for us, we went two out of three...that's not bad right? Well, there are those that say that we don't know football and take personal shots and to those people I say, may the Lord accept your attendance into heaven.

As for the two big games Friday night here is a quick feeling on both games. First, in the MVL title game between Rosemead and Arroyo, Rosemead looks like the better team on paper and on game film. However, if there is coach that will have his prepared for a big effort, it's Jim Singiser over at Arroyo. Look for this game to be close early and for Rosemead to pull away late and win.

The other BIG game is Bishop Amat vs. Notre Dame. We had a chance to view the coaches tape from the Bishop Amat vs. Crespi game and I will say this; Amat came to play and it showed. They kept making big play after big play and there is no player that has his stocking rising more than BA junior cornerback Darian Johnson,

However, Mr. Johnson better be ready, because you know that Notre Dame will be taking their shots against him tonight in their passing game. Now, we don't do the San Fernando Valley, but we have a good friend that scouts the area and he told us during the week that SOND is one of the best teams he has seen in quite a while. Well, that is not the most comforting words for BA fans to hear, but you know that coach Steve Hegarty will have his troops believing they could win and they will play with no fear tonight.

I see a competitive game, but in the end, too many horses equals a big win for Notre Dame.

One last thing, if you are interested in going out of the area for games tonight, let me give you two alternatives. First, there is the Garfield vs. Roosevelt game at East LA College. I had a chance to experience this game several years ago and it's one of the best high school football experiences we've ever had. I happen to live on the border of East Los Angeles and believe me, everyone is talking about the game.

The other game, and this is a game that we may be attending tonight, is the Turkey Tussle at the Rose Bowl between Muir and Pasadena. Fred can speak to pride that the city of Pasadena takes in the game and even though Muir is the heavy favorites to win tonight, it really is worth going to. It should be a fun night at the Arroyo Seco.

Before we take your questions, I have to call out our buddy Miguel Melendez over at Star News. I read his column last week and he stole our questions format and used it. Miguel, the next lunch is on you...next time, I'm putting a patent out on the format. Keep up the good work big guy...you're doing a great job.

And now to your questions....

POSSIBLE ROWLAND PROSEPCTS

RAIDER NATION ASKS: Hey Guru - With the great season they're having so far, can you provide some outlooks on the Rowland Raiders. They have some Sr.'s that really need to be looked at ( Wallenberger, BJ, Stansell, Allen, Davis ) from your view, what are the chances of seeing them at the next level??

What a nice season Rowland is having and since their Freshman team was pretty impressive last year, we see this momentum happening for the next couple of years. The player that I really like is BJ Stansell. A really shifty running back, we can see him as a Div. 1-AA, to a D-2 kid if that is the route that he wants to pursue.

POSSIBLE REASON FOR AMAT'S QUIETNESS

JCAZ points out: I am just guessing here, but maybe the reason you don't hear to much from the Amat crowd is because they do not hold you in as high esteem as some of the other folks in this blog. Or maybe it's because allot of their blogers have come down hard on you as of late, for some of you're recent, silly &*# comments. Or maybe it's because some of those same comments that you have made about the Amat (potential) D1 players, were so compleatly out in left field, that it made people laugh at you. Or maybe it's because of the crack about Amat traveling outside of thier area to play better talent, only to have to suffer "a long bus ride home from the IE."
Or maybe it's because allot of the Amat faithful really don't think you know what you're talking about. Or maybe it's because...You get the picture.

What picture is that? That Amat was going to have a great season and that Coach Hegarty was steering the ship in the right spot...hmm...maybe they should schedule that game in Inland Empire next year. After all, they dropped Los Osos from their schedule. Joe Amat, do the Amat fans really hate me?

NORTHVIEW LINEBACKER QUESTION

VVL Asks- Guru, How about any of the linebackers at Northview getting any attention. Have you seen any tape or heard anything. Just curious.

I have seen a lot of the Northview LB's and they are the keys to the success of Northview in the playoffs. I think they are great high school players and need to play some junior college football to really get an idea to what level they belong at the college level. But they are good players.

JUST WHAT WE NEED...MORE LISTS

Just Wondering asks: Guru, How about some simple lists for the teams here in the SGV only... Considering this current senior class only, who are the...Top 5 Running Backs, Top 5 Defensive Linemen, Top 5 Offensive Linemen Top 5 Defensive Backs, Top 5 Quarterback, Top 5 Wide Receivers. I realize you look at talent all over the place... but this is a SGV blog and it will be interesting to see how you fill these lists up with just the local kids.

That might be something we'll look at the end of the season. Thanks for the idea.

I LOVE THIS IDEA

SUPPORT THE LOCAL PLAYERS asks: Guru, Is it possible for you to track and update some or all of the College players from the San Gabriel Valley so the area folks can continue to support them?

Sounds like a column we can do for next week. Great idea. Thanks

THIS ISN'T BASEBALL, STATS AREN'T EVERYTHING?

QB Sacks posts: GURU: DO YOU KNOW WHO HAS THE MOST LEADING QUARTERBACK SACKS OF ALL THE (7) LEAGUES IN THE VALLEY? AZUSA, #47, ARCEO, HAS (10) SACKS!

Thanks for the stat update and next time, edit your posts.

A STAR FOR THE FUTURE

COHS asks: What's your take on Dennis Rufus the young sophomore stud that plays corner/receiver for the chargers? Some are saying he's going to be better than Will Harris that is still playing ball for USC right now.

Having seen him in person and on tape, I love the kid. He has all the tools to being a big-time D-1 football player and he has no character flaws whatsoever. He looks great right now and projects really nicely at the next level.

FINAL NOTE FOR EVERYONE AT THE TRIBUNE...
Finally, I know that many of you are "techno geeks" like myself. You're attached to your cell phone to the hip. And so it was really nice to see when I punched this newspaper's website address on my cell phone on Saturday morning and a mobile version of the San Gabriel Valley Tribune popped up. I was about ready to do cartwheels.

Many of people, like myself, are getting their news and information by using our cell phones. Many newspapers are putting their stuff on Mobile Internet and we can practically read everything through our cell phones. It is great to see that the SGV Tribune has followed down the same route as the Los Angeles Times and are catering to the needs of people like myself. On my cell phone, I had bookmarked newspapers like the LA Times, NY Times, Washington Post and many, many more and now the Trib is on my bookmark list. It was really nice to read all the stories from Friday night's game next morning on my phone.

Congrats to the people in upper management at the paper for making life for myself a little easier by putting the Trib on the Mobile Net. Amen!

P.S. my last game as a Bruin was in 1983 when Ricky Ervins took a sweep 70 yards in the 4th to knock us out of the semis, but I got him back down the road.

Guru, your SH biase in your article is so obvious that now even I'm doubting your credibility. Its comical to see your attempts to defend and make excuses for the poor showing of your "college prospects" and your South Hills team.
For all the excuses you have listed, WC had even more key moments that would have made their victory easier, it wasn't South Hills that kept WC in the game, it was West Covina that kept South Hills in the game, The overthrown pass early to a wide open reciever was a sure touchdown, and one of the dropped passes could have been another touchdown, & like Marquez mentioned the 2 WC lost fumbles that led to SH scores, plus the good defensive play that was called a PI wich kept a SH drive alive.
If our fullback was at a 100% & had the thrust that he had in weeks 1 & 2 WC would have pounded the ball even more,
as it was last night,it seemed like our run game was hampered cause he didn't have the thrust he had early in the year, If he is at full speed he creates nice holes for Johnson to run through & it doesn't take much of anything for Ricky to go long.
Anyway's with that joke of an analysis, your bias is exposed, and your opinion will probably be taken with a grain of salt by most here.

Thanks man im flattered. You called me out, but trust me, no one is cutting down that team. I have a lot of respect for them, and I think there doing great things, but isn’t this a blog. I’m just venting, yea Ill be the first too admit that it sucks watching from the sidelines wondering how great our team could have really been. I’m just pissed that I didn’t do more to help that team out. In regards too my posts, all im pointing out is that the SGV is getting weak. I noticed that the San Antonio is in the Southeast now and I was wondering why that is. I also noticed that a 4-6 Diamond Ranch team is going to make CIF. And as for the Prospects post, I believe that some of those guys could play college ball, but I just don’t feel that the Rowland coaches will do enough to get them were they want to be, but I hope im wrong. That doesn’t mean I don’t have respect for the coaches, I just felt they didn’t do enough to help us out, and I hope that doesn’t repeat. So before you come on here and call me out, and bring out my name like that, don’t be so quick to judge. I was there cheering on Rowland against South Hills and I will be there when they play their first CIF game. Anyways I don’t know who you are, don’t really care either, but have a little class next time you post, and good luck to Rowland in CIF.

Raider, stop hating chad. We all know its you or your dad coming back here to hate on this success that you guys thought impossible after the good ol' class of 07 left.

Raider said:

And as for the Rowland Prospects...The only one that really has any chance of doing anything would be "Branden" Stansell(not BJ, thats a different player) but 2 reasons why he wont:
1) he is way too small for a D-1,1-AA, or even D-2. I think he would fit in at maybe a D3 or maybe even play a year or 2 at a JC to prove his worth..2) but the big reason is Snyder doesnt help kids get into college. There has been alot of talent that has come through that school in the past few years and no one has gone anywhere.

Raider said:

I have to say that the SGV is really weak in football this year. It seems like each year the talent just gets lower and lower, I dont know how anyone else feels about that, but i noticed that these teams are just not clutch anymore. What happened to the Shaun Codys and Walter Thurmonds and guys like Brigham Harwell. SGV Football is taking a crap.

We thought it was a good league my daughter cheered for them etc. Politics always happening there. We played there because of rules of where you live and all that BS. You can see two things that stick out on the video. One the Raider t-shirt..need I say more. The Guy in the USC red t-shirt and hat with the styrofoam cup..gee I wonder what was in there? Nice hot day that fricken dad was drinking....Not much has changed since the days I was there in 2000. They need to clean up that WC league and have the WC Police Dept. have someone run it just like the Sheriffs did to some leagues years ago. Clean up that riff raff. Cortez is a nice park with upgrades and the Bruins JAA should go on, but time for change in the structure is needed. I would love to coach a team but I would not coach there. This Video is so shameful to the residents of WC we are not all like that.

Try Harder said:

i tried and take the side from the entertainment value of the Guru but after reading his review of a school I'm intimately familiar with I'm sure he knows very little about what he speaks of.

This latest South Hills apology is the worst. West Covina battled tougher down the stretch and beat what some would think it a superior opponent. That's called nutting up and getting it done or as we used to say back in the day....FOREVER AND EVER AND EEEEVVVVVERAH!!!! SCOREBOARD BABY! 10, 20 , 30 years from now....same same. DONE!

I went and seen SH against Rowland and said at the time that SH looked detached and disconnected from the game. Maybe it was Senior Night but obviously WC was no slouch at 8-2 and should have been prepared for better.

SGV Guru I love the premise of your takes and actually would financially support any effort that would spotlight our area's talent but fair is fair and area means just that...AREA.

Too much talent is over looked in your pieces and too many coaches are given a pass while other are completely ignored. That's my one point of contention with your pieces here. They seem like South Hills babble. All the time.

For example in the Rowland game the better athletes were on the Rowland side of the ball. By far superior in every way. Tougher, meaner, faster and much more hungry. Yes it's one game but #10 and #24 from Rowland would compare with who from SH?

Try and keep a level head GURU about what people tell you. I know that people can be cruel but seriously South Hills is a great local high school program and nothing more. I think Bonita's coach get's more out of less truth be told.

So Jaime make a point of being honest about what you write considering the weight Fred has given you. That certain review you gave gave me chills.

The most important thing you can tell a player, parent or school is the truth. From what I personally know....you sugar coated every flaw and ignored the glaringly obvious. I can't respect that.

Give it another try Guru. Just try and be honest instead of currying access by glossing over selectively. Find the best talent that no one knows about. Don't just give me a Top Ten list. Everyone knows when they see a Harwell how about someone who is not on a big name program but is in need of a look?

Good luck with your service Jaime. Hope you take this in the vein it was given....hoping your service ultimately helps kids.

The West Covina Bruins program has been like that for years now. When my boys played I always hated to go play at Cortez Park and I hated it even more when they came to play at CO. I have all the respect for Mike & Kathy D'Amato(spelling) they ALWAYS put the players first.
They should just get rid of West Covina and Pico Rivera teams. I know every city has problems but these two are at the top of the list.

Marquez, is absolutely correct. He pointed out exactly what I was thinking when I read the guru's blogg entry regarding the game last night.

The guru had given, far too many reasons for a South Hills loss, rather than a few even handed reasons, for a West Covina win.

To be fair here (remember I am Swiss after all) you bloggers have to understand that no matter how impartial a writer tries to be, there will, on more than one occasion, be a natural bias shown towards a team that that writer favors.

It's human nature.

I think it's quiet because our guys have proved themselves against the best competition and get looks all over the place. They don't feel they need to be validated as much as others who never get the opportunity to really find out. When you play a schedule that includes a bunch of poor teams, that leaves so much to the college recruiters questions and makes t tougher to review that tape.... true?

South Hills kept West Covina in the game? Are you joking? Everyone knows you are biased when it comes to South Hills so let me point out a few things that did not work in the Bulldogs's favor.

1.The 2 lost fumbles which ultimately led to South Hill's only touchdown.

2.A couple of dropped passes that would have kept West Covina's drives going.

3.A questionable pass interference call against WC on a 3rd down play .

4.Ricky Johnson's long run that was called back because of holding.

It was just a great, crowd pleasing game between two top teams.

One loss to a tri-league champ. The other to a PAC 5 Power.

The player that you are referring to on Rowland is Brandon Stansell, BJ is another player-BJ Oyefeso-WR-#10, who actually has the physical tools to be a very good college player-6'3"+, about 200 lbs with good speed. Brandon Stansell is on the small side, but don't let his short stature fool you-he is strong. He has put up great stats this year, over 1000 yds rushing, a lot of receiving yards and return yards as well. He also plays a fine cornerback on defense, ask Bevel on SH how hard he hits. Check out the video and see how far the helmet flies off.

Brandon should be MVP of the San Antonio League. No player is more valuable to his team than he is in this league. Rowland would not be 8 and 2 with a share of the league title if Brandon did not play and perform at such a high level on both sides of the ball. And no, I am a coach or his father.

Hey DUDU I mean Guru,
Judge not lest ye be judged. You bag on AZTEC PRIDE for his posts. I'll bet he knows that hind sight is 20/20, not 50/50. Just because you were an equipment/gopher coach at SH, don't bag on others unless your posts are crisp and clean. You must have been one hell of a water getter to have a blog. Where are you coaching now?
