Sunday Tribbin
Northview coach Jim Arellanes following 14-0 loss to Paraclete..
"We didn't see anything like this team. I said, as soon as I saw the bracket, that this might be the best team in the division. With all due respect to Rosemead, because I know they are on fire right now, but I think it's going to be those two in the finals."

Well, looks like we'll crown a true San Gabriel Valley champion in the Southeast, where the best teams in the Valley reside. The Mid-Valley championship should be a great title game too once Rosemead and Paraclete dust off a couple Rio Hondo league survivors in the semifinals. I've seen 'em both now, Paraclete's the real deal and so is Rosemead. The only thing that can stop those two from advancing to the championship are turnovers, say, fumbling four times in the first six minutes or something. Sorry San Dimas, it happens. Anyway, have a good day and to the Westsiders, congratulations, it's nice to see Temple City and Monrovia back in the semifinals like the old days. I still don't think this is their year to win it all, but then again, what does Mr. 0-for-4 in Mid-Valley quarterfinal picks know anyway. Before I forget, someone reminded me that I said if either Azusa or Monrovia won the Mid-Valley, I'd donate a $100 bucks to the school's athletic department. If the Cat's win it, I'll deliver it personally.

Steve,
I knew you were on the right side of that fence.
I heard Larry Brown during the Iverson years say,
"I don't have a bunch of rules... but I have a heckuva lotta suggestions!"
Posted by: Joe Amat | December 1, 2008 10:53 PM
Joe Amat,
Good post. I don't agree with Madden, although I've heard him mention before in interviews was that was how he treated his players. I think he said his only rules were be at practice, and play your butt off on Sunday.
The problem with having the "Jordan Rules" with today's athlete is that you get a case like Adam Jones, or Plexico Burress.
Posted by: Steve Ramirez | December 1, 2008 10:10 PM
So that last joke was clearly about the double standard that some coaches have for those "players that you hold the bus for"
Here's another:
A coach is scouring the field during warm-ups and can't find the opponents star player, who surely is going to destroy them that day.
Just prior to the game he went into the tunnel to collect his thoughts and ran into the opposing coach. As they were making small talk, the star player came running up in street clothes carrying his duffel bag.
Waiting for the tirade he heard the player explain that he overslept and was certain he'd be benched, increasing the chance for victory. The other coach finally spoke up and said,
"Johnny... for being late... I'm gonna make you play the WHOLE game tonight!!!"

Go Kyle Lengyel your the best player ever
Posted by: Blahh | December 1, 2008 8:09 PM
A coach walked into a bar late after a game and sat down to have a drink. he looked to his right and saw a 4th string freshman walk-on nursing a beer.
He stormed to the end of the bar and screamed, "Son, you know the rules about drinking and curfew... you've violated both... you've embarrassed yourself... you've embarrassed the school... tomorrow turn in your uniform your off the team!"
The coach was disappointed and headed back to his school when he saw his captains at the other end of the bar pounding shots.
He strolled up to them and said, "Men, did you see what happens when you break team rules?" As they nodded in anticipation of the coaches wrath, he said,
"Then let that be a lesson and don't EVER let it happen to you!"

Goldenarm - oh enlightened one. My team got knocked out last week. Can we come to town and play TC next year so you can show us a thing or two?

Steve-O,
I did hear that and laughed! Madden is a character. Are you sure it was Madden... or was it Frank Caliendo? I can never be sure !:?)
Do you agree with him? He was a great coach for a short time, but coached in a different era for an organization whose motto was "Just Win Baby".
I wonder how that would translate to todays athlete?
Posted by: Joe Amat | December 1, 2008 5:50 PM
Joe Amat,
Did you hear John Madden's response to that on the telecast last night. He said, and I quote, "There are some guys you just hold the bus for."
Posted by: Steve Ramirez | December 1, 2008 5:09 PM
Joe that was a perfect example. Players have forever tried to get over on coaches. That's old news. But when a coach tells you "he ain't playing" well it's only a matter of time before the team finds out if he's serious. Apparently Hags is amd was.
No player worth his salt would have it any other way. No parent worth their salt should see it any other way....and there in lies the rub.
The question people always want to know is ..."would the situation change the call". In this case Bishop amat made it point. Come to Bishop Amat but come prepared.
Joe on a side note. What would Bishop Amat be with Rodney Sermons and the others that left IF the change in coaches had been done a year earlier?
How's Amat basketball this year? I

Rowland Faders -as a CO fan you don't want to play the schedule card when it comes to Rowland. really you don't.
Posted by: reality czech | December 1, 2008 4:28 PM
Walnut Insider,
Rowland lack of Coverage??? no one will care about Rowland after CO punks them in their own house. How can you give credit to a team in the playoffs that plays the likes of your Sorry a-- Walnut team and a 20 player roster from Nogales.? Rowland is still playing yes, but what does it matter when it comes to a blowout loss, when CO embarasses them the Way LA did a couple of years back. Rowland is really the 3rd place in the San Antonio. Lucky Coin flip. CO 48 Rowland 12
Posted by: Rowland Faders | December 1, 2008 3:57 PM
Sorry. Perfect comparison. Coaches are paid in high school to teach life lessons. I said then, and I say now that any successful coach at any level worth his salt would make the same call. I remember at the time someone wrote Pete Carroll would never do that to one of his "stars". I responded with this proof to the contrary.
http://blog.oregonlive.com/behindbeaversbeat/2008/09/rey_maualuga_keeps_hits_coming.html
USC players don't get paid, do they? At least not legally.
A day will come when an employer will want our boys to be on time.
That lesson is better to have been learned now, as opposed to later.

Little different when your getting paid to be on time, vs. playing for fun..
Bad comparison..

The talk of Mid-Valley dominance should end this year from the East. You had your chance and squandered it.
The fact is that the West has a 3in4 chance to carry away the ring...with a guaranteed rep in the Final.
Except for the Azusa fans, all I hear from the East is a bunch of excuse-making, over-hyped cry babies.
You played...you lost. Every winner left in the bracket has played and beaten at least one of the Easties. There are no slights...and no excuses. Wish your victors well, find a new team to cheer...or silently hibernate.
You are through...

Prove the critics wrong! You were the underdog last week, and look what happen to us. So much for Fred and Steve's picks??? If your defense played like you did Friday night, I believe you can win this game!
Good Luck Temple City!

Players Club,
I gotta agree with you here. There was so much slurping of Bishop and South Hills this year it was a little much for me to handle at times. I think the only team that got enough coverage was Charter Oak. Rowland is still in the playoffs, but no one knows much about the team because of the lack of coverage.

Since we're "Just Tribbin'"... I came across an interesting article from Saturdays Minneapolis Star for you "naysayers" that complained about the controversial "Mclanahan decision" against NDSO. It seems that Adrian Peterson and starting cornerback Cedric Griffinof the Minnesota Vikings were late for a meeting and the coach -*supported by the players*- agreed on the punishment... don't start - same as Hags. Amazing! Most coaches that "get it" (that one's for you MTC) would make the same call. Here's the article:
http://www.startribune.com/sports/vikings/35237469.html?elr=KArksLckD8EQDUoaEyqyP4O:DW3ckUiD3aPc:_Yyc:aULPQL7PQLanchO7DiUJ
Hagerty and the staff has re-established the discipline and commitment among the group with a consistent approach from Day 1 and it is just starting to pay off.
A few more thoughts later on the "State of the Lancers". Dang! back to work.

Well, the predictions are getting more difficult, but there are so few of them, I'm actually working less! Some great efforts this last week by several teams and some poor efforts by really good teams that a lot of people expected to see play some more! It is what it is... so here are my picks...
Charter Oak vs. Rowland - Both of these programs are well coached and have very few weaknesses. They are both big, strong, and fast but I think CO plays slightly better defense and CO plays the best special teams in the valley. They say defense wins championships... and I agree with "them"... CO +14.
West Covina vs. Diamond Ranch - DR is coming off a pretty big upset against South Hills and a win over West Covina seems like it would be an upset as well. The question is, can DR complete two upsets in a row against very good teams? I supose if any team was able to pull it off it would be DR, but I don't see WC missing a beat. They were very strong this past Friday and they should take this one as well. WC +10.
Rosemead vs. Monrovia - Monrovia is one of those blue collar teams that doesn't really do anything flashy... doesn't expect a lot of hype... they just win - week in and week out. On the other sideline is maybe the best offensive unit in the valley behind Tra Summler. I was at the San Dimas vs. Rosemead game and the Panthers looked really strong. They made very few mistakes. They took care of the ball and Summler is all that they say he is... great runner and a very good defender. It would take a lot more effort for Monrovia to beat Rosemead than it will for Rosemead to beat Monrovia. I like RHS +21.
Paraclete vs. Temple City - I got ripped for picking Paraclete over Northview this last week... but the Spirits can play great defense (I love their name... the Spirits). Temple City is a team that relys on pace and ball control while Paraclete, even though undersized a little, just wears teams down. I like Paraclete here +10... it will be a low scoring affair.
So the finals look like this...
Charter Oak vs. West Covina
Rosemead vs. Paraclete
I'll have predictions on these games next week. Stay safe and play hard...
Posted by: Just Wondering | December 1, 2008 8:53 AM
Panthers will be ready this Friday and leave no doubt that they will come out hitting!
Posted by: Shout Out | December 1, 2008 6:32 AM
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh
some of you genius football minds have already proven you know flat out nothing about M-town or Temple City's capabilities, team make up, coaching and/or playoff potential. Why even continue the slander- when already you are buried under a foundation of wrong picks and 1000% inaccurate vision of which team would prevail in a given game.
Would you feel some validation in TC losing to a very good Paraclete team? Would the Mead beating M-town somehow bring a glimmer of recognition to an entire post-season where your lack of fball knowledge was glaringly apparent?
Oh yeah...suddenly become a Rosemead fan, where was that part of you 3 weeks ago?
It is refreshing to see the dedicated, hard core Azusa fans have chosen NOT to cheap shot Temple City. While others outside the Aztec/Ram game still throw low blows at the Azusa coaching staff or insult the Rams with standard crap about player quality.
If your team is knocked out, suck it up. Do some learning and come back in 09 with a better overview of SGV football.

this is to the the person under the name lp warriors posting comments up. first of all i saw all your games this year and shame on you your just a lil punk who just cant admit that u guys just had a rebuilding year or u just plained sucked. u guys lost all of the playmakers last year when they won league, u guys didnt have any this year. barrientos this barrientos that, he was overrated last year when u guys won league, he was small and weak, all he had was a lil speed but that was it. and yeah i know he was hurt this year but i know he had issues with the head coach and where was all this complaining when u guys won league huh? see thats what i thought u just wanna look for some one to blame on your fugly season. i won 2 titles with the wards in the early 2000's i know what it takes to win. u guys just got cocky after one title plus u had a bunch of a**hole seniors. oh and so what if your complaing about running its part of football its called "conditioning" and quit lying u guys didnt run hard, thats why u guys ran alot cuz u guys were lazy. ive saw a few a of your practices and u guys run nothing close to half the teams in the valley. if you were playing when i was i bet you u coudnt handle the wards running it was like joining the army.u wanna experiance some real running go try out for any d1 d2 d3 or jc team in the nation.oh and shame on all u seniors how the f*** did u guys lose to workman this year, losing to them is like usc losing to ucla. and to azusa person on the blog yeah ill give u guys credit this year, u guys were a solid team congrats on your title, but im sorry to say but the montview league now is a joke. when i was in school lp,duarte, gladstone were in the top 8 teams in the valley. it was strong when i was in school but times changed, but lets see what u guys can do next year with out your playmakers.

Anyone who thinks TC has a chance against Paraclete is straight nuts. They're going to win by at least 2-3 touchdowns. TC's defense is good, but not good enough for Paraclete. And their offense is not going to score much at all. Azusa got out coached...won't happen again.
Oh, and with a couple exceptions to someone's scouting report - based off last night's game - you're off a little about some of the personnel and formations.

Sorry guys but Monrovia and Temple City have NO CHANCE to win this week! It is unfortunate that the 4 best teams in the Mid Valley played in the Quarters, but thats the way it goes. Monrovia & TC should just be happy to be in the semis. Rosemead beats Paraclete in the Final!
Posted by: Raul | November 30, 2008 10:03 PM
common sense,LP,
YOU MAKE NO SENSE! WHAT'S YOUR POINT. It's over for all the three teams now. Give it a rest now, our year is done for now, and i'm sure the rest of the teams that are in the semi's don't want to hear about what we have to say!
What's done is done, and nothing can change it! What IF? will never know now will we.

Looking for just a slight bit of revenge. If so just head down the 210 west and get off at Huntington dr. and make a right on 5th ave. Come and check out the team you never saw play on Friday. You will see a more comparable game with more comparable atheletes in this Semi-final game. Maybe this is what a lot of you guys need is a reality check. San Dimas was a great offensive team, but their D came across a more explosive Offensive team. Monrovia is an even More Explosive Offensive team but unless you're in denial this is the game of the Year! Re-Match Cats will prevail in this one......

at least la puente scored against temple city last year. azusa lucked out with its number 2 seed, facing a weak opponent and winning one playoff game. my hat goes off to duarte for that win, they no doubt have the experience

We do have some good athletes at Rowland, even though they are overlooked in the shadow of SH, WC and the rest of the Valley. #3-QB has 18 TD passes and 10 rushing TD's. #24 has 16 TD's, #10 has 11 TD's and #23 has 7 TD's. Lots of long TD's. There are a couple of others that have done some damage, but the numbers are less, as they have had less opportunity.
I am sure everyone is expecting a C.O. blowout, I hope they are wrong...Yet am very proud of what Rowland has done so far...

Who are those "playmakers" your referring to? I will be attending Friday nights game and am looking forward to hopefully a battle of attrition so give me a few numbers to watch for. I know who Charter Oak's "gamebreakers" are because everybody keeps talking about them but do you really have four or five guys that can change the outcome of the game?
Posted by: E.S.G.V. Fan | November 30, 2008 7:57 PM
I think Rowland fans are not used to their football team performing at the level this years team is. I couldn't be happier as an alum and having a son playing on this years squad. Over the years, Rowland have had some good teams, yet always have been unable to finish games off.
I know throughout the year it's been Charter Oak as the team to beat...I am very happy that at least we get the chance to face off in the semis...Rowland has four or five players that can make the big plays to change games. I know we are a big underdog, but Calpreps predicted a 4-7 season for us in 2008----WRONG ANSWER---So who knows...???
Posted by: J.A.R.H.S. Alum | November 30, 2008 7:36 PM
Players of the year is going to be tough in the easten part of the valley. Both San Dimas and CO can split their votes because each has two worthy players. Three great RB's or the QB? On Defense #54 from Diamond Ranch is the front runner. Saw him against Amat, CO and South Hills. All top teams and he stood out more than any other on the field.

A post from the PSN...
Goldenarm...
Good review of Paraclete. A couple of additions:
- #51 and #59 have very good motors on the DL. They also start on an undersized OL. They, like the rest of the front, are smallish, but have GREAT feet and get off the block well. TC must FINISH their blocks if they're going to have success running at them.
- They have two QBs. #15 has been starter during their 10-win run. He can throw...and it needs to be respected. The formations they run with him are traditional: 2-back, even depth, with 3 receivers (sometimes they flex the TE)...dive, lead, power, sweep. #11 is their runner. He broke his collarbone early in the season and has been on the bench for a while. But he was inserted last night at halftime and immediately infused a little giddy-up to their offense. They like to run the DBL wing with him...featuring an option look. They don't like him to throw...even though he did complete a long corner route last night.
It will be tough for the TC D to prepare for BOTH offenses.
Fact is that Paraclete can be pushed around...you just have to meet their intensity and discipline.
I like TC in a close, low-scoring game.
Posted by: BigMLover | November 30, 2008 3:30 PM
I was at the San Dimas vs. Rosemead game on Friday. Rosemead did EVERYTHING right. San Dimas made some silly errors early, but I'm not sure it would have mattered the way the Panthers were able to move the ball. While I remain a big San Dimas supporter, no one can take anything away from Rosemead... they were fantastic against a very good team. Summler is a great football player and despite his 260 yards rushing, I think he had just a big an impact as a defender. San Dimas was never able to get any momentum... they were off balance all evening! Just a fine effort from the Panthers.
I predicted Paraclete would beat Northview, but I though it would be a high scoring effort... I never expected NV to be shut out! Obviously another great defensive effort.
I think the final game will be Paraclete vs. Rosemead and if Rosemead plays like they did Friday, congradulations on the pending championship.
I'm very proud of the season the San Dimas Saints had! The program is clearly going in the right direction... However, it's really a shame that the "best teams in school history" only has one trophy to show for it (Smudge Pot). A league or CIF championship would have been nice.
Congradulations to Rosemead, Monrovia, Temple City, and Paraclete. You, your coaches, you families, and your fans should all be really happy with your successes this season.
Seasons Greetings!

Fred,
If TC wins, you should make it a grand.
Paraclete looked tough last night. I was wondering if either team would ever find the end zone.
TC needs to raise their aggression level to compete. I agree with coach Arellanes observations...Paraclete plays sound football. Their team speed on D will present problems for TC.
I will say it right now...Temple City can beat this team.

Rosemead is hot and should dominate Monrovia but the Mead can't look passed them. It should be a close game in the first half. Tra will carry them in the second half. In their first meeting Tra didn't play at all in the second half.
