Northview Pulls it Out, 40-39
Final Score: Northview 40, San Dimas 39
Northview (7-2, 4-0); San Dimas (8-1, 3-1)

What happened: Have we been sleeping on this Kamaron Germany kid. The Vikings junior rushed for 278 yards and three touchdowns, helping the Vikings cement their first signature win in years, knocking off undefeated and Mid-Valley Division's No. 1 San Dimas, 40-39, at the District Field. Leading 34-33, the Vikings stretched it on a clutch call. On 4th-and-5 from the 11, Oscar Robles pitched to Andrew Rodriguez, who threw an 11 TD pass to Joey Martinez, giving the Vikes' a 40-33 lead with time winding down in the third quarter. In the fourth, San Dimas quarterback Mick Kalmar scored on a two-yard run on fourth and goal. The Saints went for two, but Kalmar was stopped just inches away. The Vikings got gutsy again. On fourth-and-five they fake punted, and Andrew Rodriguez bulldozed his way for five yards and a first down with 2:52 left. Rodriguez closed it out on another big fourth-down play, getting a couple yards on 4th-and-one with 1:35 left to close the show.
Fred's thoughts: If it's a soccer game its 6-6, as in both teams scored six touchdowns. It went back-and-forth and special teams played a huge role, especially on extra points. But the Vikings made the big plays, got the big stops, and I thought were more emotional from start to finish. Would it have been different if Saints all-everything Nico Barbone played? It doesn't matter, he wasn't there. The Vikings deserve their moment, but I keep thinking of what San Dimas coach Bill Zernickow told me after saying Barbone couldn't play because of a hamstring injury. Quote: "No matter what happens, we'll probably see them again." Wouldn't that be a nice playoff sequel? Question is, what will this do to the Mid-Valley Division rankings? That will be interesting come Monday.
How they scored tonight
NV: Kamaron Germany two yard TD run, (7-0 Vikes)
SD: Daniel Joseph 67 TD run (7-6, Vikes)
SD: Gio Mantilla 17 TD pass from Mick Kalmar (12-6 Saints)
SD: Joseph 5 TD run (20-7 Saints)
NV: Germany 6 TD run (20-14 Saints)
NV: Oscar Robles 17 TD pass (20-20)
SD: Erek Brown 11 TD pass from Kalmar (26-20 Saints)
NV: Anthony Farmer 17 TD pass from Robles (26-26)
Halftime
SD: Joseph 16 TD run (33-26 Saints, 9:52 3rd quarter)
NV: Germany 14 TD run, Germany two-pnt conv (34-33 Vikings, 6:09 3rd)
NV: On option, Andrew Rodriguez 11 TD pass to Joey Martinez, kick missed (40-33 Vikings, 1:32 left in 3rd)
SD: Kalmar 2 TD run, Kalmar comes up foot short on two-point conversion, (40-39, 5:41).
Thursday's Results
Northview 40, San Dimas 39
Gladstone 21, La Puente 0
Covina 21,Ganesha 20

BREAKING NEWS: I spoke to San Dimas coach Bill Zernickow today, who says that starting linebacker/running back Nico Barbone will not play tonight. Barbone, who missed last week's 56-46 win over Baldwin Park, is still nursing a hamstring injury.
"We have to look at the big picture," Zernickow said. "We don't want one game ruining his opportunity in the playoffs. Obviously it's a blow, but it gives other kids chances to step up."
Northview coach Jim Arellanes on tonight's game ...
"I was walking out to practice, and coach (Brian) Zavala nudges me and says, `This is why we're here together,' " Arellanes said. "It gave me the chills. These are the games you want to be involved in."

Wow, this mom exchange is so embarrassing. I live in SD, am Latin, democrate, & my husband is self made & we are financially blessed. I can tell you no school is perfect not even SD. So lets be thankful for our blessings. I'm sorry to hear SD had injuries. But, really my husband was a professional athelete. All teams have injuries, sometime or another. No team can have all players bringing their best all the time. I'm sure the oter team has had hurdles. Thats how life is played. Do the best w/ what you have at the time. Please SD don't brag we have our share. Let us wish the best for everyone else to succeed.
**God bless, Good health, & Prosperity to you all.

GHigh -- what an awesome thing to put out there for us all to remember. Just like in baseball - is it sooo awful that we have such great ATHLETES in all sports right now in the VVL.. There is enough room and more power to us over here in the SGV. As proud as I was of NV, I was just as proud what a great game it was and how exciting for the VVL. Too bad san dimas mom felt the need to whine with excuses and take away from the game.

Lets just keep sending positive thoughts for all our players.
They really need our complete support before playoffs.
I feel NV had a little edge not having all kids on the field, but that's football.

I don't entirely know how, but many folks on this blog think that my support for Daniel Joseph equates to distain or a lack of appreciation for Nico Barbone. Nothing could be farther from the truth. In fact, I was sitting at home on Friday morning wondering how the Saints might have fared had Barbone and Joseph's roll been reversed... in other words... what if Joseph was out and Barbone was playing? Interesting question. If I'm being honest with myself (to coin a Simon Cowell phrase), the Saints have a better chance of winning. Why, because Barbone is so much more physical than Joseph. The fact is this... Barbone is indeed the baller between the two. The Saints have really struggled in his absence, and they will really be a lot better off when he returns.
So, to any ditractors... please know that I really do understand the importance of Barbone and his absence. He's special and the Saints need him on the field if they expect to have a chance against NV, Mead, Azusa... etal...
What will it take for San Dimas to win a CIF championship? They need to play much better defense. Can they play better defense? Perhaps... but their defense will only get substantially better when Barbone and Withem return.... no matter how well Joseph runs the ball. This guys are a great team and I know they will play well together.
Good job NV, but standby, a different SD team is on the horizon...

As in the election, the democrats beat the republicans. I can safely say as a northview alum that we as lower income, minorities are all democrats and the rich white boys over in san dimas are republicans....or so our teachers here at Northview tell us it is. Either way, my alma mater dropped the wood on the Zack Morris' of the SGV like my boy Barack did to Johnny Mac. SD just didn't handle the loss as well as the Az senator.
Posted by: democrats beat republicans | November 10, 2008 1:10 AM
Sorry SD MOm, but hopefully you will learn. All good and decent sports fans know that you don't make excuses and disrespect the winning team. I've seen NV's team and they are all quality, so why not just congratulate and hope to meet them in the championship. By disrespecting NV you disrespect our league, which in my opinion is better than ever. Good luck to all Valle Vista teams in playoffs, and how about that Ganesha team coming close against Covina. Great game, solid teams, and not a bad crowd for a Thursday.

I attended the game last night with some SD friends. Yes Bearcat fans and Saints fans root for each other and I’m sure our friends will be in attendance for our game with CO.
For what its worth, I would like to address some topics discussed. First of all, it was a great high school football game last night. Two teams battling it out to the end. And in the end, Northview was one point better than SD last night. Hats off to them! But that leads me to wondering about the debate of Nico Barbone not playing. Football is a game of inches and having a little luck along the way. Maybe last night was that inch that went NV way. That’s football but one has to understand that players like Barbone do make a big difference. Not to compare the NFL with HS, but look what’s happening to the Cowboys and Patriots this year? I am sure the coaches have a difficult time making adjustments without some key guys and Coach Z is doing his best.
I’ve watch Barbone excel for three years as a varsity player and he’s is a special talent and I believe he was surely missed last night. Not here to discredit the win in any way to NV because they played well and deserve the win. Hopefully both these teams go at it again in full capacity so there is no doubt and no discussion. I am sure that in two weeks everyone will be best friends rooting for each other. Funny how we can come together in the great USA.
Just Wondering
I have read you’re posts sir all year and while they cleaned up as of late, you have to take notice here also. You didn’t start out with the “team” in mind. Jealousy or trying to bait team members is toxic and from an outsider looking in, a lot of fans recognize what a kid like Nico means to the Saints football team and how they both are fighting for the same goal. Pretty simply concept! Sure everyone has an opinion and you’re entitled to one, but how that message is delivered is key. Personally, when you take a talent off a field and have to play better teams, it going to affect the outcome. Sure Daniel has been great addition to your team this year, but Barbone is the glue that’s makes it all work. My opinion only, but he’s a real baller..
Good Luck to the SGV teams in the playoffs. It would be great to see many of them in the finals…
Big game for the Bearcats next week.

San Dimas mom, how obnoxious you are sounding and ask yourself -- really ask -- would your kid want you doing this?? Pretty sure the answer would be HELL TO THE NO, as they say. Most likely - you are embarrasing him. Now please stop, most of us SD and NV parents do not want to take anything away from either team. Bottom Line -- SCOREBOARD. great game teams.
Posted by: Be proud of both teams | November 7, 2008 1:19 PM
SD MOM,
You suprise me, before the game you were congenial and after the game you are full of hate and excuses...
Its a high school football game, nothing more and it was a very good game at that...
One thing I can guarantee you is that after these kids graduate this game will be a distant memory for them, heck its likely that most SD players are over it now so relax...
Regarding the outcome, did you expect NV to roll over?
I actually thought they would beat you by more points prior to the game, I have seen both teams play and thought NV was better balanced...
Injuries happen, turnovers happen, penalties happen and all that matters is scoreboard...
Btw here is another slant, if Nico plays then DJ gets less reps and as we saw last night he is by far your best offensive weapon...
I am not even associated with NV so my opinion is unbiased, NV is a very good school and has a fantastic administration...
Not sure how you turned this from football to academic superiority but if you think NV is just some ghetto school full of thugs and idiots you are far from correct...

Spectator,
Good info. Most public school districts will range a bit plus or minus a little bit... but that is a great place to start.
Obviously that stipend is on top of their teaching salary and may be also supplemented with off season, camps, weight room supervision, and summer stipend - but those are very low as well. Some districts give a summer stipend to the program of about $15-20/per player and often that is split among several coaches.
Coaches can also negotiate additional duties (Athletic Director, etc) to add to that - but with that comes extra work... not always a great deal. A better deal is if a coach can get some free time during the day in the way of their Athletic PE period and additional prep periods. THat in turn could be seen as a % of their "football income"
Of course, private schools are exempt a bit from public disclosure and there is a VAST difference from school to school. There are some myths, urban legends and old wives tales about private school football coaches salaries... and there are some that are true.
The bottom line is that football season really sets the tone for the school year. A good season is invaluable on student body, faculty, and community morale... not to mention the bottom line. All you have to do is look in the stands at tonight's Amat game and do the math.

To all the people who think I'm not showing class or I'm upset, you are totally off base. The only reason why I even made a comment is due to the fact that stupid stuff keeps coming out of individual mouths who have no idea what they are talking about. So for the final time, I will state my position and then leave it at that:
1. I enjoyed my time at LP. I loved the kids and the community. If I had it my way, I would have stayed my entire teaching/coaching career there. However due to the actions of a few people at LP, I decided not too. I don't know about you, I can't work some place were the people in charge can't be honest and/or truthful.
2. I agree that if we handled our business on the coaching field, then we would still be there. However we did not and the decision was made to let McMillon go. All I'm saying is, do it the right way and not the back door way.
3. As for acting like a man, that should be the norm for anyone. Being a man does not mean walking around LP with your chest stuck out like your a body builder. Being a man means telling someone to their face, that they either did a good job, a bad job, or hey your fired. You never ever want to hear about you being replaced through the papers or other HC's in the area. Now if I wrong on this, then you must be cut out the same snake mode as some of the people at LP.
As far as I'm concerned this discussion is over. I only replied because you have immature idiots on this blog calling people "perverts" and making untrue statements. You are right...........there are 2 sides to a story. However, since no one is coming on here to refute anything I just said, I must be right. LP does need some stuff worked out because in the end those kids are getting screwed. They need to get someone in there who will stay and at the same time have the administration back them up. If that happens, then the sky is the limit for LP. However until they get rid of that incompentent administration, then LP football will be in the same sad state it is now.
Oh yeah, too LP_Alumni: I know your an ex-player who probably didn't get much playing time. Instead of being ticked off at the coaches, why don't you look in the mirror and figure out why you never played much. Matter of fact, state your real name and then I will defintely know why you didn't play!
I'm gone and will go back to my teaching and coaching careers at Miller. At least at Miller, they treat their teachers and coaches with some sort of respect.

That is incredible logic, I question whether you really are an alumnus of LPHS, or one of those frequent transfers to Valley or just a player who never touched the field.

i dont care who you are, or what you believe, Northview is NOT better than San Dimas. hands down.
there are no excuses, san dimas messed up, and northview took advantage of it. trip a hurt giant and its easy to take him down.
simple as that. going up against the entire san dimas backfield...and its lights out for northview.
you are not better than SD, but congrats on a good win.

copied and pasted from the HLPUSD website, this is what they get for the season/year. If a coach decides to practice before or after the season then they do it knowing that their stipend stays the same no matter how many hour they work.
Coaching stipends are public knowledge in any district and you can usually go on their website and check.

Mr ? aka LAPuenteAlumni
As I have watched this discussion unfold I have tried to stay above the fray and not get involved but the fact that you have expressed your point of view in a manner befitting a 10 year old. You have personally attacked not only myself, but also the Coaches McMillan and Martin. I also wanted to write with no illusions to who i am and to what i believe.
As to my being let go by Coach Hernandez in FEB of 2007, I was disappointed with his decision but I was never angry. In fact, ask anyone who knows me they will tell you that I supported his decision in the sense that he is in charge of the program and he can let me go for whatever reason he deems necessary.
I am a loyal supporter of the program and of the team but have been unable to attend games this season because of my responsibilties to AB MILLER... who is 9-0.
I have never once asked (but appreciate) someone to defend me. I am my own man and I can defend myself without anyone's help. Coach Martin, Coach McMillan and I have all blogged with our real names and for the record I am not LP_Fan. Who are you? be a man a state your real name.
The fact that you have personally attacked Coach through insults does little to help you arguement in fact anyone reading this will think you nothing more than a hate-filled little man.
For the record, I support Coach Hernandez ecxcerising his right to quit, but I cannot agree with the timing.
And I am in a program that wants me as a coach... I am happy where i am and i am learning something new everyday at AB MILLER.

all i got to say after reading the sitution on the lp coaching staff is i dont blame coach hernandez for stepping down, i personally think he didnt have a choice. coach hernandez got ******, and where was all this crying about the coaches from the players and parents last year oh let me guess is it because they were winning, teams have bad seasons, it should be no suprise its la puente.
p.s. i didnt know punishing a kid or player for breaking a team rule was a bad or get forced to resign over....

I know Joe Amat has lists up the whazoo but Joe is there any chance you could produce a list of what coaches make without naming names.
For example what does an assistant coach at the Varsity vs Freshmen level make?
How about a Varsity D Cooordinator or O Coordinator make?
I think it would shed some light on the sacrifices coaches make and really put an end to the "I could do it better" mentality out there. "Pennies on the dollar sounds about right" as another blogger mentioned.
So Joe Amat any chance for a list ? Yes I know I "asked for it". Please?
Posted by: Okay...Da List! | November 7, 2008 11:17 AM
I really think everyone should be adult about the situation and look at what the kids are being taught, they get to disrespect whoever they want and act however they would like to act without any consequences. Like someone else said in a previous entry, if you attended any LP game you heard the crowd yelling obscenities, it is no wonder why the children think they can do the same. I do have to say that not all students/players at La Puente can be grouped together but what are the others thinking when their own teammate can act the way they do and administration allows it to continue to happen by not allowing the coach to discipline.
Coach Hernandez was and I would like to say is very dedicated to LPHS but no one deserves to be treated the way he has.
I know that when it comes to coaching everyone thinks that they can all do it for the Pro's and know what is best, and maybe they can, but not everyone is willing to do it for pennies an hour, especially when you are being treated with such disrespect, not only by that many players and their parents but by their administration.
As for all of the previos coaches that are posting remarks really, no wonder you got fired, be professional about something for once and ignore something. Move on.

We are in the MVL and have no choice who we play from weekd 6-10.As far as weak teams , I DO NOT consider South Hills, Monrovia , Covina , OR Temple City as weak teams .
Harvard Westlake would do the same thing to MOST schools in the SGV .All you can do is line up & play 4 quarters , see ya in the playoffs.

AWWWWW...call someone on their comments and she draws out the claws.
You cannot take away from Northview's win by saying it would of been a different outcome, YOU DON'T KNOW THAT....you also can't run a game with the "WHAT IF'S".
THE FACTS ARE THE FACTS NORTHVIEW WON!!....and I'm am grateful and yes it was satisfying.
The game lived up to all the hype and it was fun.
I also know that all the schools that represented were not there "ONLY" to cheer on Northview, I never meant it to sound that way....I was just glad they showed up for support, maybe even if the only reason they showed up was to see who they would be facing in playoffs doesn't matter they still showed.

Learn something about the team concept. This has nothing to do with Daniel or anybody else on the team. Look in the mirror! Maybe you'll figure it out.
I think the coaches may know just a little more than you do. Second guess our coaches all you want, but there comes a time when you need to STFU.

Over the last 3 years, I have read this blog every blue moon. However I find out this morning, that people are slandering some of the people I used to teach and coach with, so I decided to chime in with my 2 cents.
First of all, I will say that our coaching staff should have did a better job with the football program, but we didn't. Did Coach McMillon and his staff deserve to be fired......looking back now, yes we did. There were many things as young coaches we didn't do and should have done. But all in all it was a learning experience. I'm not mad that we got fired, however it was the way that is was done that pissed me off. Instead of coming to Coach McMillon like a man, Mrs. Smalley and Espinosa went the back door route to try and find a replacement. They asked Gano at LA and Bogans at SH if anyone on their staff wanted to become a head coach. How do I know this because they called the staff and told us exactly what was being done. Then on top of that, the Principal and the AD called a sham of a booster meeting in the WigWam to see if the parents would want us fired. The only parent who said something was someone who was pissed because we had kicked his kid off the team for missing too many practices. Even after that show of support, Smalley and Espinosa waited an additional 2 weeks before they decided to fire McMillon. Instead of being professionals and firing the man up front, they tried to be sneaky and do it this way. This is why myself and many other people have no respect for either one of them.
Now as for Cantu. Even after McMillon got fired, Cantu and myself still fundraised for the program and attempted to hold it together until they found a new coach. We personally helped clear a $3,000 bill that had been owed from the HC before McMillon. Do you know how we got thanked......your ex head coach Hernandez and Espinosa offered us a job only because Smalley promised us one. I saw the handwriting on the wall (not being wanted), declined the offer, stopped teaching at LP at the end of the year (I was tenured so I didn't get fired), and took a much better at Miller. Cantu stayed on and played his position. He was loyal to that school and the football program, but he still got crapped on. However, Cantu landed on his feet and accepted a position to coach at Miller with Coach McMillon and myself.
At the end of the day the turmoil at LP is deserved! All the foul stuff that the Principal and the AD did to the last staff is coming back to haunt them. You can question someones coaching, but don't question a man's integerity. McMillon, Cantu, Butts, myself, and the other coaches worked their butts off to help those coaches grow as football players and young men. We never had a serious problem with grades, campus discipline, and we NEVER had a player munity!
This is all I have to say. I put my real name down, so there is no mistake who this is coming from. If certain people at LP don't like it........to bad.

WOW! That pretty much sums it all up. I was so empressed by both teams last night. The game was so exciting. Until the very last play this game had fans on the edge. Can't believe I had to come to work today, my head hurts from screaming so much last night.
SD MOM...I've always respected your posts, as I hoped you did mine....then you post something like "If we had Barbone, If this ...if that"....are you serious? It was a great game, someone had to lose and you trying to take it away from them is not alright. I'm sorry we all act rash with emotion when we don't get our way or things don't end the way we want but I really thought you had more class then that.
San Dimas Football players I really thought you played with so much heart, you will go far in CIF and I hope we are there on the other end to meet up again in a CIF Title Shot.
Just Wondering I'm so glad you were wrong about this one. You weren't wrong by much but just enough. THANK GOD!!
I NOW NEED TO SHOUT IT OUT FOR THE VIKING!!! YOU DID IT!!
Coach Arellanes this is YOUR TEAM, you have coached them for 3 years and now you get to reap the glory...you must feel a great accomplishment in this.
WC FAN....tell me again how Robles chokes in big games!!
To all the other schools that showed up last night to see the game....good for you SH, WC, SEM, MON, AZUSA, AMAT...it was good to see you, thank you for coming and most of you were on our side cheering for us to win...we appreciate the support.

WOW , San Dimas gives up WAY to many points . Look out for RHS come playoff time , The Panthers D WILL NOT give up that many . As far as the Ray Hernandez topic, from an outsider looking in , I KNOW RAY & he is ALWAYS looking out for his players best interest. Setting an example in every way a coach SHOULD ! But when an administrator does what she did , he had NO CHOICE ! Ray being a football guy should have NO TROUBLE finding a job coaching again , ANY school would be LUCKY to land him ....
HE IS A PANTHER !
Fight On

LAPuenteAlumi,
I don’t know who you are, but you should stop with your comments. They are disrespectful. This is why I am not going to post with a screen name. I want to state my opinion for the record.
Man that LP stuff was a mess. I don't usually get into LP Blog discussions, but I was attacked and want to respond. I made some mistakes at LP. I trusted coaches, but didn't trust my instincts. I trusted the AD to be square with me, and I was optimistic about the new principal. Hell, I even thought that eventually some of the parents would see past race and work with me (my children and wife heard me get called a Miyata/nigga or however the hell you spell it in Spanish). However, one thing I did not do was go to the snack bar during half time. I loved those kids, and stayed at the school late, started study hall, and opened the weight room, and did every thing in coaching arsenal at that time to be successful (I understand now after coaching with a good coach that my arsenal was pretty weak). I also never quit on those kids, I was fired and in retrospect it was great for me and my family, and it propelled me as a coach, because now I actually know how to coach.
Even when I got fired I prayed that La Puente would find a good coach to help them become successful. I wished Coach Hernandez the best, and I even called to congratulate him for La Puente making the playoffs and winning league. You don’t know half the things Mrs. Smalley and Espinoza did to me while I was at LP. If you have ever coached and given your time to kids you know that it is not easy. This is especially true if you are not successful. People on the outside and inside talk s*hit, but occasionally the one who is attacked is effected by peoples actions.
As for Cantu, you should not use that term pervert. Cantu is a good man, who has more integrity and morality in his finger that most people have in their entire being. Cantu did want to continue to coach at LP and Hernandez decided he didn’t want him on the staff. Cantu is at a more successful program, and he also developing his coaching skills, so it was a blessing in disguise.
I wish LP the best! I think they have some tough and resilient kids. I just hope there is a coach out there that can fight through all the BS to help LP become more successful.

Sorry, that last comment about SDs kickign game should have been directed to gralx, not sevenduece...
Sorry...

sevenduece...
Regarding San Dimas' kicking game...
It has suffered this season. The #1 kicker was doing a pretty good job but got removed from the team this past week due to grades.
You're right about kicking... it will limit us in CIF for sure.
Mr. Cancer in the stands...
I don't know why you feel like you need to hate on Daniel Joseph so much. He's done a great job carrying the load for Barbone in his absence. Acknowledging his hard work does not equate to having his balls in my mouth. Of course, based on your use of poor language and the fact that you feel like you need to talk do to me and about Daniel Joseph, I don't expect you will ever be able to acknowledge any player's hard work. You just have too much anger in you. Too bad for you! I'll stay positive about all the players - Barbone and Joseph alike - and I'll let you wallow in your hatred!

very fun game to watch. i tend to favor defensive battles, but northview/san dimas was what high school sports and sports in general should be about, electicity. i was looking forward to seeing the other stud from san dimas, but maybe sometime in the future. again, great game to watch and highly entertaining.

Look at all the missed extra points..... tough to consider yourself a championship squad if you can't put the short ones through the uprights! Heck, even my kids PeeWee team made about 50% this year.

Just wondering
As long a you're given kudos to your boy in every post, things are good with you. What a joke, get off the bangwagon.
SD can't give us 40+, be down players, turn the ball over and win! The school isn't big enough to overcome the depth issues. By the way, any fumbles from your POY? Get off his nuts and start thinking about the team. S--- is getting old.
For a guy who claims to have played college ball, you're ooach forgot to teach you a few things.

LP_fan,
I'm gonna have to disagree with you here.
Let me preface this by saying that I know absolutely NOTHING about this situation other than what I have read on this blog. I am operating here on a totally hypothetical basis.
But from what everyone is saying on here, I actually back up the coaches' decision to quit. You all are seeing it as him failing his team by quitting on them. I see it a different way.
The way I see it(at least from what I've heard here) he taught those kids what standing up for your principles truly means. He laid down ground rules and expected the kids to follow them. SHOW UP TO PRACTICE! IF YOU DON'T, YOU GET BENCHED! IF YOU DON'T LIKE THAT...YOU'RE OFF THE TEAM! I believe that is the philosophy of almost every football coach in America!
If the administration truly was going to force him to play those kids, what message does that send to the rest of the team? "Just do whatever the hell you want cause the admin will overrule coach"
At that point, if I was coach, I would say something to the effect of:
"I laid down ground rules and expect the kids to follow them. Now you're telling me that I HAVE TO play this kid after he violated team rules? Well make your choice right now Principal...either I'm on the field tonight or this kid is on the field tonight but not BOTH of us!"
I TOTALLY 100% support his decision to resign from a position in which his authority was being undermined. That was a situation where his hand was forced. Resigning at that point was the ONLY respectable thing left to do...and it was the only way he could teach those kids this valuable lesson:
"If you find yourself in a situation where someone is forcing you to compromise your values...do everything in your power to GET OUT of that situation!"
Bravo Coach! Well taught.

Last evening’s game was really fun to watch. Both teams played less than stellar football and the game ultimately came down to a contest of mistakes. The team that made the last mistake, lost the game. Both offenses played well enough to win, but both offenses were also sloppy with their ball handling – six or seven turnovers between the two squads.
A couple of things I’d like to point out:
1.) There is a reasonable chance these two teams will meet again in the playoffs. Should that be the case, the San Dimas team will need to play much better defense should they expect to have a chance. Which leads to my second point.
2.) San Dimas is not getting the job done in terms of their defensive coordination. Over the past several games (except Pomona), their defensive game plans have been way off the mark. Which leads to my third point…
3.) Better defensive planning aside, it’s difficult when you’re (SD) missing your three starting linebackers – Barbone, Kohler, and Withem. Two of the three will return should the Saints advance beyond the 1st round… an as pointed out by SDJohn, if they don’t start playing better defense, there might not be a second round!
4.) Northview’s defensive effort was nearly as weak as San Dimas’. As long as Northview was able to keep the SD offense off the field, they were able to stay in the game…and ultimately win!
5.) Daniel Joseph has been a real workhorse for the Saints. He has a level of explosion that makes him really special. Why this guy doesn’t get more attention by colleges and especially by the Trib for POY is the question of the season as far an I’m concerned.
6.) Northview needed every tool they had to win by one point – and they got every tool to show up last night – so congratulations to them!
7.) Both Northview and San Dimas will need to play better defense in the playoffs if they hope to make a run at Rosemead. There were a number of players at the game from Rosemead and I couldn’t help but thinking that they were chomping at the bit to go against these two pours defensive units.
Ultimately the decision to keep Barbone out, the decision to go for a two point conversion, the sloppy defensive play, and the carelessness with the ball all combined to limit San Dimas’ chances at winning. Again, nothing but respect for Northview, but during playoffs, San Dimas will likely field a very different looking team that will surely have a better chance of winning.
Great game… big fun to watch… real classy folks at NV and a fantastic league championship for the Vikings!

Wow, all the stuff going on at La Puente is very sad, because no matter what side of the argument you're on, it's the kids who are suffering the most.
Imagine being a senior on this team under these circumstances. It's really a shame.
As for the Northview-San Dimas game itself, well, it was far more interesting in the stands last night.
We had coaches from El Monte, and South Hills there, along with about half of the football team from Charter Oak.
There was even a reported sighting of the Guru.
I guess allot of folks came to see one of the valleys more important games of the year last night, because the stands were really full of people.
As for the game itself, wow !
It was sure entertaining. Allot of scoring and some excellent runs by some great running backs on both sides of the field.
A few observations here.
1. It was nice to see another band combo play a few tunes together at the beginning of the game. I only wish that the Northview band would have changed from the USC fight song a little bit earlier in the first half. Man, they keep playing the hell out of that one part of the song (you know the one that is played shortly after a TD) in the first half, and to tell you the truth, it really got irritating after the played it for about the 15h time. And this is coming from a ULCA guy who likes that song !
2. Both of these teams need to work on their kicking game. Way too many missed extra points, and I think that was a contributing factor in the decision to go for two after that last TD by the Saints.
3. Neither team could stop the big run last night. But that’s what made the game so entertaining because you never knew when the next big breakout run was going to happen.
4. The announcer on the Northview side was too much ! I was waiting to hear, Gasie, GASIE, GASIE, first down LLLLLancers ! (if you know what I mean).
5. I swear to god that I saw Whisky Pete in the stands last night. There was this guy (im not kidding) that could have stepped right out of a gold miner’s history book He had a long white beard with an equally longer feather sticking out of his cowboy hat. They shouldn’t allow folks like him, into these kind of games you know. They cost me allot of money when I see people like that in the stands. Because of him, I booked a first class ticket to Vegas on the first flight out of town Saturday morning.

I am a La puente resident and casual HS football fan for the past 10 years. My son graduated from LP and I've been quietly following them and have attended a few games over the past few seasons. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of attending the LP vs. Sierra Vista game last week. I just want to say that parents and fans should be ashamed of themselves. I have never seen or heard that type of negativity at a HS sporting event in all my life. The entire game was filled with fans screaming profanity and put downs aimed at BOTH coaches and players. I was truly embarrassed to be a part of such a circus. Regardless of who is right in this whole situation, I hope that the people in the stands can learn a little something about class. I can't even believe certain people were calling out individual players on the field. This is lower division HS football, not the god damn pros. Give me a break. Get a grip.
As far as the coaches, from what I've heard from a student at the school is that the players that were being kicked off the team for having missed practice and couldn't accept being benched. If that is the case, I totally back up the coaches and their parents should to. If you think about it, they are only trying to teach these kids about responsibility. Which is a life lesson they can take long after they walk off the field in their final game.

Northview 40 San Dimas 39. It doesn't matter if this is not big time orange county ball, this was pure emotion and a ballgame I was lucky enough watch. Fred, Northview is on another run this year it looks like in sports. Could they be the most dominant school in sports in the valley right now? 5 league titles last year and 2 cif champions last year and now football kicks off '09 with a championship. Don' talk about leagues etc...it's across the board and they're winning cif rings too. Great coaching staffs and players. Fred, you should write something up about this.

Wow.............I see a lot of my questions got answered. However, LP Alumni.......let me clear a few things up for you:
1. The former player, Hugo was coaching with the varsity staff this year. In my opinion, you never hire kids who have just graduated to coach at the varsity level. There too young and too connected to the kids. Also good players do not always make good coaches.
2. Yes, it might have been a down year, but you never bail on the kids no matter how pissed off you are at the Principal or AD. This action shows that the staff never cared about the kids and were only worried about their own reputations. You can say I'm wrong, but what kind of message does that send to the kids............when the going gets tough you bail or just quit!
3. I do agree that administration should not be telling coaches who they can and can't cut (if that story is even true). I also agree that Smalley is a joke of a Principal. However, the AD must take blame in this as well. Hernandez was the AD's hire, so he should also deal with the fallout from this betrayal.
4. It's not cool to slander someone's name because of your dislike for him LP-Alumni. I know personally Cantu is an upstanding individual and far from a pervert. Hell, I don't think Cantu is worried about LP and coaching there. From what I know, he is coaching on the varsity staff at A.B. Miller and their currently 9-0. I don't think he is worried about the coaching turmoils at LP. In addition, since your implying he is not a good coach, then why would he have gotten hired at Miller (that coach has won CIF before, so he wouldn't hire anyone he didn't trust or think could coach), if he couldn't coach.
5. As for the McMillon comment, yeah he did some crazy things while he was at LP. However, he kept those kids grades up, 90% of his players graduated, he restarted the JV team, and he never bailed on the kids. Record wasn't great and he hired a crazy OC, but he tried to do what was right by those kids.
It's sad that LP can't keep coaches and it's sad that the administration can't hire someone who really wants to be there. If they would just leave coaches alone, someone might want to stay there. Oh yeah, LP also needs to change that arrognant attitude about how things are done at LP (The LP Way). They have won 6 league championships in 90 years...........obviously the LP way doesn't work. Let someone come in there and build a program there way (as long as it's safe and not hurting the kids). This is the only way LP football can truly blossom and grow.

believe me... not a parent and not cantu but you just slandered the guy on a public thread nice job... so much for professionalism.
I don't hate Ray, i just dont like what he did this afternoon
Posted by: LP_fan | November 7, 2008 1:30 AM
First, I do know what happened.
second, I agree 100% with Ray's decision to kick the kids off the team... nowhere in my posts did you see me disagree.
Third, being an alumni has nothing to do with being right or wrong and are you saying that they should turn a blind eye to something that the coach does that is wrong because he or his staff are alumni?
Alumni: I was correcting some factual errors you made and commenting on Ray's unprofessional decision to quit before the end of the season. I also have a problem with coaches threatening players. This is why we don't get the talent LP should

everybody thank principal ms smalley for getting rid of the football coaches AT LP, i heard she gave them the boot cuz the coaches wanted to cut 3 players and administration (ms smalley) didnt see it that way. i mean arnt u suppose to back up your coaches. ive heard shes a piece of work , she fires the baseball coach out of nowhere and hires her son in law i mean why r u gonna fire a coach that wins for ur school, i also heard some of the basketball coaches quit a few yrs ago cuz of her. looks to me like shes worried more about her reputation. i mean ive seen the team this year, there star running back out for season with knee injury and the players this year arnt as good as last yrs and the qb thrown like 30 inteceptions already.i mean its a rebuilding year what can u say.i dont know all the info bout the football coaches situation but from my point of view im supoorting the coaches just cuz the administration didnt back them up. i mean if a coach wants some players cut then the administation should back them up 100%. shame on mrs smalley also it makes the school look bad on the sports side of it all i hear is coaches come and go at lp just cuz of the administation mostly ms smalley isnt that why the Wards left after 3 titles in a row in the early 2000's. yo fred i think u should look into this one i smell a good soap opera at lp. shame on ms smalley, i mean u have a good coaching staff, come on its a rebuilding yrs u cant always win especially in the montview league the teams are not consistant in winning titles back to back.so fred look into this one it could get very interesting.

HEY REAL FOOTBALL FAN
when rosemead has a league like this one, then you can talk number one. if the mission valley league was anywhere near strong, you'd have a point. mission valley league sucks and rosemead is exposing it, that's all.
cif playoffs will truly showcase whether Rosemead should've (or will have) a good ranking (either for now or for next year).
by the way, why don't you explain why when someone tackles Tra Sumler he goes down like a Quarterback avoiding a hit? Avoiding injury? maybe but I've seen some Rosemead games and once a hand gets on his body (like a shoulder grab or a push) he drops like a featherweight.
If he gets the room and the great blocking (which happenes 90% of the time) you wont see it happen, but I think most teams in the CIF are going to be well aware of his schemes or that of the coaches.
He's no LaDainian Tomlinson but over time he could be.

Nothview pulled it off.... By ONE POINT....WOW im in shock....without Nico,Kyle,Freshmen Nathan,etc... if we were without all the injuries this would have for sure been a different outcome... and Northview knows that... see you at the playoffs...... with a different outcome....GO SAINTS....

How great was that game tonight! Every player on both sides of the ball put everything on the line tonight. San Dimas running back was as good as advertised, and the Northview running back may have earned himself a scholarship tonight. However, the best player on the field and in the valley is Andrew Rodriguez, #44. He made every play that needed to be made to win this game tonight. He took over the game and it is rare when a player has that kind of ability. Congratulations to both teams and thank you for a clean fought epic battle that many fans will be talking about for years to come!

I guess that league championship was a fluke! How can Hernandez even look at those kids for the next 6 months.............he quit on them. Great hire Mrs. Smalley and that idiot for an AD! No matter how bad it gets, you never quit on the kids!
Now if I'm wrong about anything I just posted, please correct me!

Congratulations to a really well prepared and determined Northview team! It took everything they had... and they delivered... left it all on the field for homecoming! Early in the first quarter it looked like San Dimas was going to run away with the game. Their crowd was really into the game and their offense was doing what it does! In the second quarter the Saints started to become sloppy with the ball. I'm not sure, but I think NV was able to score on every turnover (3 in all) the Saints made. There was some really bad officiating against both teams... I don't think the poor calls favored one team over the other, but the officials were really poor - maybe the worst so far this season.
No excuses for the Saints here... NV beat them fair and square and they're the champs! Congradulations, again for a job well done!
San Dimas has a great team and they will be better when they get back some of their skilled guys that are out with injuries - but tonight - Northview was the best!

TopDogCrowned,
Tell me how you going to win anything beyond a league championship this year? Seriously, explain to me why your anything better than an above average team that loses in the second round or semifinals this year. Have you ever hear of the phrase "Pot calling the kettle black?"

czech,
Can't worry about the haters only worry about faithful. I just might take this game in myself . It does sound like it will be an all out battle. Maybe if we cheer enough for the other teams they will cheer a little more for us. Haters will hate no matter what is said or done with AMAT. But as you can see their numbers are shrinking. A little humility goes along way.

reality czech,
Come on now . This game is between 2 SGV teams and a league title. As you can see it is drawing plenty of interest and banter between their fans. Of course it is more important then our game against Crespi to the local area and it should be . It doesn't matter about college prospects or whatever . This is a great game for our area . Let's support our neighbors as we would want them to support us in a big game . It is post like yours that casts an air of arrogance over AMAT and the faithful fans of AMAT.

Make NO mistake, Oscar will be just fine at game time. He is settling in and ready to rock and roll. It is NV's night.
It would be nice to see Nico out there tonight (still not sure we won't)and WE wish him well, the VVL needs him. BUT our Vikings are ready and willing. Game up boys and come out fighting. Work hard, aim big - good things will happen.
Posted by: go vikings go | November 6, 2008 1:45 PM
You asked who has Northview played the last 4 games....they are playing the same teams that SD is playing except they are holding them to a touchdown or less and these same teams are scoring all over SD.
Posted by: Fan Shaker | November 6, 2008 1:45 PM
Tonight's game is not only big for the Valle Vista title, but for the Mid-Valley Division playoff seeds. Are you listening Monrovia, Azusa, and San Marino? All three are ranked 2,3, and 4 in the CIF polls. A Saints loss would move all three up in the rankings going into the final week with Monrovia and San Marino playing for the Rio Hondo League title next week. Azusa could be the top seed going into the playoffs. How about that AZTEC PRIDE and the the rest of the Azusa fans.
Posted by: I REYNOSO | November 6, 2008 1:45 PM
Ok, i just checked the paper. Look how much Covina and Baldwin park scored against San Dimas. How did that happen? They scored less or ZERO against NV. And the NV offense is also scoring now. I agree its going to be a good game, but i dont think SD will beat NV by soo many points. IF THEY BEAT NV.
Posted by: a fan | November 6, 2008 1:42 PM
Northview was 2 dropped passes from beating Rowland. Dropped one in the end zone and another on the 2. I've seen every NV game this year and this is not the same team that lost to South Hills. The Vikings will surprise a lot of people tonight.
Posted by: anothervikingfan | November 6, 2008 1:38 PM
I keep read the last four games for Northview this, the last four games for Northview that. FRED you please do some research on who've they've played the last four games Nogales 1-7, Baldwin Park 4-4, Covina 2-6, Ganesha 2-6!!!!!!!!!
Its a joke

I agree that with Barbone is a huge benefit because he's one very good player on both sides. We have experienced it and have to give this kid his credit!
The problem with numbers is its not a game like sitaution and NV is not Pomona or BP. Pomona's defense is better than BP and NV is way better based on numbers!
If you guys over come tonight, then the playoffs with Barbone, Withem, Kohler will give you guys some sure added muscle.
Good Luck

Come talk to me when Oscar can win a big game. Tonite after the game most of the NV crowd will balme him like they always do...What has changed since? but you know what they are right, he is just overated and when push comes to shove he does not show up. San Dimas big tonite in another rout like last year.

Here's some interesting information for tonights game....
In the previous two games (both without Nico Barbone), the San Dimas team has scored 90 points and given up 54. Daniel Joseph has ran wild this season with an 11 yard per carry average. In Nico's absence, Geo Mantilla has stepped up and averaged 8 yards per carry vs. Barbones' 8.8 yards per carry. While Mantilla has not received the number of touches you would see from Barbone, he is clearly a suitable replacement until Nico is well.
Make no mistake, San Dimas is a much better team with Nico on the field. He's a fantastic runner who makes defensive units adjust on nearly every series. However, and the point of this short note, they are a strong team without him as well.
Having said that... the fact of the matter is, Barbone is missed on both sides of the ball. He's a tremendous defender and due to the absence of Kyle Withem, he's the teams best linebacker. San Dimas' fate is in the hands of their depleted defensive unit... the offense will score!
So... San Dimas should still win this game... but with Nico out, Northview can see now see that the flicker of light at the end of the tunnel might not be an approaching train!
Again, good luck to both squads... it will be a real battle and lots of fun to see!

Very respectful comment NV Mom
These boys from SD and NV have been competing against eachother since they were freshman. Given us alot of joy and pride watching them play.
I saw Nico last night and he said “ It doesn’t look good and its just hard to miss such a big game” Felt bad for Nico, and tried to lift his spirits, becasue this young man is a real warrior. Knowing Nico, hell be fired up for playoffs!
Good luck to both teams tonight and be safe!

WC... Hope you attend the game tonight. It should be a good one. JAA has nothing to do with now.
Posted by: a fan | November 6, 2008 11:22 AM
With or withour Barbone The Saints roll the Vikes. Robles chokes in big games and cheeses up to stiff competition. He has been that way since JAA days. Saints 38 Vikes 8

Nico Barbone we wish you a quick and full recovery. I seen you play against Los Altos and you are awesome.
Posted by: Northview MOM | November 6, 2008 11:00 AM
You want answers, I've got them. Thanks to coach Zernickow for being up front and honest. Here is what I just posted on the thread.
Posted by: FredJ | November 6, 2008 10:33 AM
There i go miss typing again, but you all know i was talking about kyle
Posted by: an outsiders opinion | November 6, 2008 10:28 AM
Yes Fred, please find out.
you always find the truth. This might just be a rumor to try and offset the nv team.. but you know, WITH OR WITHOUT Nico, the Saints will be just fine.
and in my opinion, if he is still hurt, they should not play him and have him 100% ready for playoffs with WITHEM
Posted by: an outsiders opinion | November 6, 2008 10:22 AM
Fred:
I just heard that Nico Barbone wasn't released to play?
If true, I would give NV the edge. It would very difficult to not have a player like this on the field.
Give us an update!

I'm always on here giving a shout out to the "Darkside" well it's time I paid some attention to the "BONEYARD". Oscar this is your game....connect with your weapons at your dismay, know that YOUR line can hold off SD's defense and give you the time you need to connect. Great piece on the youngsters from Northview. They seem to be really well grounded and seem to know what it will take to beat San Dimas. We'll just have to see who executes better. My money is on the Saints, but anything can happen on any given night. Here's to hoping everyone plays a good safe game!
