Many of the CO boys you mentioned and others not mentioned play fall sports and shine because frankly the baseball program at CO does not seem to recognize some real baseball talent and all these boys did when playing for COYBA.
one last thing, I wouldn't consider O'Shields coach of the year...due to his record and the fact they could/should have beat West Covina & Diamond Bar. But I do give him a lot of credit for having the courage to get rid of the bunch offense they have been running since Person's 3rd/4th year. Walnut usually doesn't have the strength to pound straight ahead. The spread offense has been brought up a lot since O'Shields took over and I am glad he made the switch.
I don't think that Walnut will need a Tommy Vasquez, Paul Acosta, or Daniel Alghotas (sp?) at quarterback to be successful especially with a back like Rhodes.
JOE SCHERF,JOE SCHERF,JOE SCHERF!
For turning AZUSA'S program to a CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM! In his first year og being the head coach!
AZUSA AZTECS!
not sure how that comment rips Warren as a coach.
Obviously, sarcasm is not understood by you. I was saying that Walnut's record was because of the easy opponents rather than the ability of one coach. I didn't say anywhere that he was a bad coach. Once again I haven't seen him coach so I can't/won't critique his coaching abilities.
Walnut has always had solid line coaches from Jordan to Jones to Wendland to Person to O'Shields to Peralta to now Warren. I think he has done a fine job, but I will never give credit to one coach (especially if he isn't the head coach) for turning around a program.
As for "revealing" who I am, I find it laughable but ok.
WALNUT INSIDER,
LOOKS LIKE WALNUT DAD HAS SHOWED YOU YOUR COMMENT CONCERNING R.WARREN. SARCASM SPOKEN WITH HIS NAME ATTACHED. QUIT WHILE YOUR AHEAD DUDE ESPECIALLY IF THE PEOPLE FROM WALNUT KNOW WHO WALNUT INSIDER IS.
/sarcasm
My vote for coach of the year would go for Ralph Warren...right Walnut Dad? He turned around Walnut all by himself. Their stellar pre-season had nothing to do with their schedule.
/sarcasm
oh by the way, the combined record of the Mustangs 5 wins is 11 - 34. just food for thought.

There you go azz hole. Is this not your comment with sarcasm with the name Ralph Warren next to it.
Yes Walnut Insider people from Walnut read this blog and we do have a idea who you are Dont worry we wont expose you but you do talk crap for a adult. Sorry if your kid is not that good and rides the pine.
First off Dad, I never ripped Ralph's coaching ability. I was ripping you for saying the entire turnaround was because of one coach and not their cupcake schedule. I can't say anything positive or negative about his coaching style because i have never seen him coach.
And I'll be honest with you I have no clue what you mean by "you were ripping Ralph Warren the first time out here and not a mention or bash in your second post." That's just gibberish to me.
As for your last comment about who I am...are you trying to scare me or something? And Walnut Dad how many of there are you ... as you refer to yourself as "we".
What I want you to do Walnut Dad is go back and show me where I criticize Ralph's coaching...go ahead I'll wait.
Walnut Insider,
Agreed yes they with their Seniors at O-line this year and next years line looks to be in a rebuilt stage. The juniors I was talk ing about are the Skilled position players. JV player may be able to step into that line next year and Ralph will do another incredible job with them..you were ripping Ralph Warren the first time out here and not a mention or bash in your second post. Give it up for the man he got some so so players to play the game. In Walnut we can narrow it down to who you really are "Walnut Insider" and if it is who we think it is your opinion dont mean CRA-. Tell Ralph to his face what you think of his coaching, but you wont, he would kick your A--.
Walnut Dad, if this line is a "rag tag O-line" where are the juniors? Wouldn't it make sense to play the juniors if they were equal to the seniors for the experience?
I personally thought Walnut would make the playoffs this year. I don't think anyone expected Rowland to be this good.
The best thing for Walnut is Rhodes and the offensive they run now. Spread out the defensive and run straight at them. I will go even further and say that Walnut actually under-achieved this year with what they had.
Now i think tonights game between WC and SH is the game to see. I have heard of some attitude on the SH team, but my kid is friends with some of the players, and they are great kids, So im more than sure that viking fan was not saying all. I wish both teams luck, but im rooting for Coach Mike and his WC BULLDOGS. Sorry son!
This game will not be close, dont fool yourself Amat Fans and come to grip with reality. Notre Dame is going to beat your team outright it will be over by halftime. It will be one looong drive home on the 101 tomorrow. Your biggest win came over Crespi and you exhausted all your energy to get it. Notre Dame at Home is a lock for the Knights. Notre Dame 38 Bishop Amat 10. Nice season Lancers hope you win that coin flip.
BIshoip amat vs Notre dame game of the week. if you wanna see some hard hitting football
Coach Arellanes COY!!!
Back to Back league titles!
ANOTHERVIKINGFAN, Did you know that during those 20 years (actually 17) that Northview did not win a title Greg Gano, Eric Podley & Bill Zernikow were all head coaches of the Vikings!!! Pretty impressive if you ask me!!!
wait intell season is over, then pick coach of the year,,its coach of the year, not coach of the league. i hope the varsity of charter oak shows up,because our league champs kicked the dog doodoo out of the j.vs today at there home ...35 to 3 please where dose the varsity get there players from b.a. glendora, dont think c.o. will keep up with us.. good luck adam coached him jr.aafootball played for glendora not c.o. bonita wins 46 to 26 thats my picks.we will know tomorrow night.
charter oak vs bonita game of the week!!!!!
Of cours it should be
South Hills & West Covina...there one of biggest rivals in the SGV..not to mention they were on T.V. last year...it gonna be another big game!
Walnut Insider, Walnut will end up 5-5 on the season, yes they will lose to Rowland, but I have to tell you most wrote off Walnut this year and they really were in that WC game to the end. Ralph Warren made players out of that O-line and is a outstanding coach. Walnut will be a top San Antonio team next season with Rhodes,Peralta,Sheffler not to mention other of this junior class that will step up next year and get Walnut to CIF. That WC game was the season right there and had they won that game they would be a great position...sure they lost but they did this with a rag tag O-LINE that was beating up on WC that nite. Credit yes to Ralph Warren.
Looks like every coach on the list deserves Coach of the Year. This has been a great year of SGV prep football. I don't know how Jim Arellanes stacks up with some of these great coaches but Northview hadn't won league in 20+ years and since his arrival the Vikings have won/shared league 2 out of 3 years.
I never heard about a SHHS crappy attitude and I agree that was a class act from Chris Bowden. At that game I saw so many athletes from different schools and they all seemed to be celebrating a great game. I saw only positive attitude, even from SD.
Viking Fan
I hope your not speaking of the whole SHHS team when you mention crappy attitudes.
While in attendence at the NV/SD game. At the end of the game I saw Chris Bowden MLB SHHS walk up to Rodriguez #44 and shake hands and give each other a hug. Class act in my book from arguable two of the best MLB's in the valley. I guess not everyone at SHHS has a crappy attitude.
Good luck to both programs
bonita vs charter oak
game of the week, hands down
go bearcats!
Lancer 2 DN
It's so funny that you should mention that little halftime huddle by the coaching staff. Yes, of course, I did notice that, and in fact I though about mentioning it earlier.
But, a loss to Loyola that night should not have come as such a big surprise, and I’ll tell you why.
First of all, the Amat game for them was the first real game of any importance. Obviously, t was the first league game of the year for both teams, but I believe that for them, it had much more importance. They came ready to play that night.
Also, remember, they had been beaten by Amat two years in a row. There was a revenge factor there for them against us more than the other two teams in the Serra league. Because of that, I think that out of all the teams, they felt that Amat was going to be the one game where they had a better than average chance at a win.
Additionally, if you look at the Calpreps, Serra league preview for this year, you will note that in the interview with their head coach, the only team that he mentioned by name (and this is way back when right!) was Amat. They were looking at our game with them for quite some time.
And last but not least, let us not forget the most important thing that night.
Cardinal Mahoney was on THEIR sidelines during that game. I mean, if god is rooting against you, then do you really have a chance?
No way!

Jcaz,
As you sat on the Amat side during the Loyola game at halftime I looked to the left as the players left the field and witnessed the whole Amat coaching staff standing there having a meeting. Yes I believe they knew they were being hustled and outcoached that nite. The better prepared team won that nite not the better overall team. Notre Dame, a tough game for our Lancers but the Serra league is strange Anyone can beat anyone here but Notre Dame has proven to be the exception, I like Amats chances as the team to give ND their first loss, if Amat plays Amat style football. Remember Amat being down to O-LUTH by 24 and coming back to win, well, what that tells me is that they play 4 qtrs and do not give up or quit. This could be a very close game, closer then what people think. These are the two best teams of the Serra league. On another Serra note.. Crespi will beat Loyola by the way. If for some reason Amat loses and ends in a 3 way tie and a coin flip decides their fate this could really suck should they be the odd man out. Lets hope they take it to ND and win their way to CIF outright.
I do believe that the CO/Bonita game is most likley the better game on Thursday night. I think I will go to that game, but the only thing holding me back is that it is so far away. I will have ot get out of the Amat freshman game a little early I suppose.
Also, a few blogers got it right when they said Hags should be the coach of the year, this time arround (did you think I would say anything else ? ha ha).
The only thing that concerned me however, was the way that the Amat coaching staff was handled aginst Loyola.
That was perhaps his staffs only blemish so far, because the team had the horses to compete against loyola that night.
Unfortunatly, Loyola was better prepaired for that game. In fact, I think that if you were to ask the staff that question youself, they would tell you that they were outcoached in that game, not out played.
Having said that, this guy is amazing, becasue he has shown that he can get a team ready to play in the big game; and win.
BTW, don't be suprised if Amat pulls off the big upset this friday, and if they win, then yes there should be no question as to who the COTY is.
Also, if Amat does win on friday, would anyone really be shocked ?
I don't think so.
FredJ,
I'm surprised someone like you would even consider another game considering the only two undefeated teams contesting for the outright league championship are from the Miramonte League.
I'll be at the Amat game because as the prep editor, it's an out-of-towner and with deadlines, I have to file from my computer. We don't ask correspondents to do that. The game of the week will be Arroyo-Rosemead (which means they get the photographer) but both games will be on the front page.
On Thursday I'm leaning toward Charter Oak-Bonita...
Game of the week should bea game where 2 valley teams square off...this is, after all THE SGV!!....But we all know that Fred will in fact be at the Amat Game, just like he has at the majority of the games this year....Good Luck to all teams this week, my Hats off to Hagerty great season thus far...but lets remember it wasnt like the hired Aguilar to take over at Amat this guy has won before and knows what he is doing..AND HE HAS TALENT people!
COJO,
Spread the love. Friday nights are filled with kids who played BB at COYSBB. C O also has Colby, Dallen and Clapper, (I know I'm forgetting some here); South Hills has some, as do San Dimas and Bonita.
Funny how so many turned out to be fallsport guys, huh?
cbs2gameofweek
"Notre Dame's speed and athleticism versus Amat's rich tradition"
Last time I checked "rich tradition" never put a point on the scoreboard, unless he's a new hardship transfer on the Amat roster.
GAME OF THE WEEK!!!!!
Tough. Ask Charger fans, must be CO/BH.
Ask SH fans , guess what?
Same with Glendora.
So go with my choice , think about this game. Terry Paredez vs Chris Allen. Toss in Peri and Williams, two more friends and former team mates at COYBB. Should be a war, Play safe.
MOST DEFINETELY BONITA WILL WIN THIS GAME. GREAT TEAM.........AND COACH PEDLEY IS A VERY PROFESSIONAL AND GOOD HEARTED COACH, HE HAS MY VOTE, ALONG WITH BONITA BEARCATS. YES,,,,,,,,
Without a doubt LA Times #14 La Puente, Bishop Amat vs. #3 Sherman Oaks, Notre Dame for the Serra Title is KCAL/CBS2's game of the week and should be the Tribune's also. Notre Dame's speed and athleticism versus Amat's rich tradition will be the main feature of this game. The #2 game of the week South Hills vs. West Covina. I'm glad one game is on Thursday and the other is on Friday...It's going to be a great football week. Good luck to all the other teams...and to all the Seniors playin in the sgv, have fun and knock some helmets. For coach of the year its Amat's Hagerty, San Dimas' Zernickow, and West Covina's Maggiore as my top three in that order.
i will be enjoying co/bonita thursday and amat/notre dame friday are thrillers waiting to happen. both games should be electric with what's at stake. i'm really excited to see these two games. sh/wc should be a great one as well, but since i've seen both play, i'll be taking in co/bonita. good luck to all as this is what high school football's all about.
Funny how this has played out. When the season began, I imagined South Hills winning the San Antonio championship going away. West Covina, Rowland and even Walnut have played well enough this year to make make following them all fun. Likewise, the Miramonte was going to be all about Diamond Ranch and Charter Oak with the gutty little Bearcats mopping up for a # 3 spot. Hah!
I had expected though, the Sierra would end up like a Somalian bar fight: feet, fists, and broken bottles . . . fought in the dark. Last man standing, no holds barred; Chino Hills and Glendora still in it, but Ayala in first? Ok, another, albeit milder surprise for 2008.
GOTW? Best game will probably be the Glendora/Ayala contest but both the C O/BoHi and WesCo/SoHills games have bigger playoff implications.
COTY? Gotta be Hagerty; huge turnaround and he has the Lancer faithful believing they can whip anyone, this year and next. Podley and Scherf tie for the runner-up spot.
Fred how could you miss this one. Ayala vs Glendora for game of the week. Easily the best game based on it being a rematch game for the Sierra League Championship.
COY. This one is hard. CO (been there done that), SH (too many Championships and pedigree), SD (maybe but he screwed Kyle so nah), Bonita (Tough to say no to a man that wins with players that look like freshmen), Morrison (hey why not he's made his son catch almost 50 balls...that's gotta count for something seeing as Travis The Great has the record at 63), DR (Roddy has played the best and will have the areas most Div 1 signees...hey you said coach of the year not TEAM OF THE YEAR), NV (There's a strong argument here but hey they won a baseball title and beat Amat's mercenary team so that cred wave is stil cresting) I vote for Ayala's coach. (brought a loser dormat back to life and has completely changed the school and communities out look...think Coach Obama) Ayala ...Change you can believe in!
Freddie J,
As a westsider, my opinion probably doesn't mean much here but I believe Thursday's coverage belongs to CO/Bonita while Friday's is UNDOUBTEDLY Amat/ND.
As far as COTY goes, and it's STILL a little early, I'm going with Scherf or Hagerty. It's ALWAYS fun to see traditionally weak programs rise up and make some noise like the Aztecs did this year...kind of like when the Clippers or Brewers make the playoffs.
However, what Hagerty has done at BA can not be overlooked just because Amat has advantages over other programs and people may say that this is "expected" at Amat. Frankly speaking, what was "expected" of Amat was for them to go 2-8, 3-7, or at best 4-6. What was "expected" of Amat was for them to get HANDLED by OLu AND Crespi. What was "expected" of Amat was for them to be placed somewhere between 3rd-6th in Fred's rankings and NOWHERE near the LA Times rankings. It was also "expected" for Amat to go 0-3 in league and miss the Pac-5 playoffs this year, yet here they are in week 10 and the Lancers find themselves playing for the league CROWN!
Now while I don't see Amat pulling off yet another upset (and if they do Hags is COTY by a landslide) I do believe that they will most likely garner the at-large bid and compete in the toughest division in the country. That is a complete turnaround from where the Lancers were a year ago, and I believe that that should earn Hags the COTY award.
game of the week should easily go to west Covina south hills. Huge rivalry game for share of league title. Should be an exciting night for both teams.
Thursday:
COHS vs. BHS- could possibly be the GOTW but really what chance does Bonita really have?
SHHS vs WCO- could be closer then you think. if South hills can stop the run they will win. If they can not it could be anyones game.
GHS vs. AHS- It could go either way. Ayala barely beatch Chino Hills. Glendora barely lost to Chino Hills. Both are good teams.
My vote for game of the week on Thursday is GHS vs. AHS it has the best chance of being a close game.
Friday:
RHS vs. AHS- not even going to be close. Rosemead rolls over Arroyo
BAHS vs NDHS- really dont think Amat stands a chance against the no.1 team in Southern Section and a top rated team in the state. but hey i didnt think they would have the record they do. Amat has to bring there A game to stand a chance.
My vote for fridays game is amat vs. notre dame.
Coach of the Year: Coach of the year could go to any of the top ranked teams. You will be able to find out who can really coach come playoff time. it all depends who can go farther in the playoffs
Fred:
I'm heading to Bonita/CO game. Your call on GOTW
Coach of Year: Bill Z, done a great job managing thur adversity this year while being 8-1 and probably on their way to 9-1.
Who has done the most with the least? Who has far surpassed expectations? Who has taken a nonplayoff team to league champs? Some will say its only the Montview League. But aren't all leagues based on school size and demographics. I saw Scherf is the run away winner of this award. As for the game of the week it has to be SH WC.
Obviously my vote would be for Coach Zernickow....He has an incredible team and great coaching staff... But i also Azusa has done a complete turn around....it would be nice to see either Coach Z or coach scherf... im sure in some way all the coaches deserve something......
I would love to see Coach Arellanes take coach of the year. He has these boys playing at a level that no one seen coming.
Also I think that the WC/SH game should be the game of the week...both teams want the win and it should be an exciting finish.
I think WC vs SH should be game of the Week. I for one would love to see WC beat SH. SH is a great team but their crappy attitude takes away from that. You need to have great players with great attitudes. GOOD LUCK AND HAVE A SAFE GAME WEST COVINA BULLDOGS!
I think several games on this list could be the "Game of the Week", but Charter Oak vs Bonita for the Miramonte title. No coin flip season on the final week! How could it not be GOTW??
"Coach of the Year" it's gotta be Joe Scherf! To be mentioned in the same company as all these great coaches is probably more than he would expect, but to turn around a program after the departure of Schuster, I think that says it all. No one expected much from Azusa after losing their coach and in most cases, nobody ever does. Great job Joe!
Good luck to all the teams! Great season for the SGV!
P.S. Eric Podley should be on this list, Bearcats always having to row upstream in the Miramonte!
Fred,
relax bud...did you not see the "tongue planted firmly in cheek" comment? I understand you guys have these very important games.
are you serious? I understand how important it is for those two schools, but we have three league titles on the line Thursday.
Fred,
(my tongue is firmly planted in my cheek)
Are you telling me that you're not even considering the Wilson v. LA game as Game of the Week? What are the chances that the only two teams in the SGV who do not have a win this year meet in week 10? Arguably the most interesting game in the valley this week!
In all seriousness though...I think we deserve a little press for this game!
