Tribskin Pick'em, your predictions and ours

| | Comments (61) |

Steve Ramirez and I will go head-to-head throughout the season, and I will update our records each Monday on the Tribskin Pick'em thread.

Robledo: Last week - 18-1; Season - 167-39
Ramirez: Last week - 15-4; Season - 156-50

Notes: Since the heart of the San Gabriel Valley is in the Southeast and Mid-Valley Division, we will pick every game. Change that, we'll pick every playoff game in the four division's we have area teams in. I have to give Stevie R., a chance to catch me, right? He gambled trying to push ahead by picking Bishop Amat over Sherman Oaks Notre Dame and Gabrielino over El Monte, and lost by picking Ayala over Glendora and South Hills over West Covina, all wrong. The only game I missed was the South Hills-West Covina game. I knew I should have never changed my mind and stuck with West Covina, I would have had a perfect 19-0 week. Oh well, it's on to the CIF-SS playoffs and our predictions. On Tuesday we will have Final Four and Championship predictions. Until then, here is who we like in the first round.

Robledo's picks of note: Undoubtedly there will be upsets in the first round, so I've got three for you, including Bishop Amat over Long Beach Poly. Maybe you think this is crazy, but the Moore League wasn't nearly as tough as the Serra or Trinity, and looking at the Jackrabbits' schedule, they never played or beat anyone in the Pac-5 playoffs other than the teams in its own league. I'd like to think Amat's win over Orange Lutheran was more impressive than any Long Beach Poly win. It's still a longshot, but Poly is not Notre Dame. In the Mid-Valley, I'm taking Covina over No. 2 Azusa in the first-round. I know this won't be popular with my friends near the Foothills, but the Colts have just as much offense, and I think they might be a little more physical on defense. I ask myself, what would Covina's record be if they played Azusa's schedule? Probably 9-1 or 10-0, so take the Colts. In the Southeast, I'm taking Diamond Ranch over Muir. Muir's all-everything Rueben Thomas injured his knee against Pasadena on Friday and is questionable, and two others suffered injuries but will likely play Friday. I know it's not a popular pick on the Westside, but the Panthers' brutal schedule finally pays off for them. It's tough beating a good team twice in the same season, but Muir is limping into the playoffs while the Panthers are hitting their stride.

Ramirez Update: I wake up a lot earlier than Steve Ramirez, so I'm posting my picks and he'll update with his when he casually strolls into the newsroom sometime this morning.
Ramirez's rebuttal: Well, due to the NHRA being in town, and after working 15 hours the past four days, forgive me for finally getting a few extra hours of shuteye. On a personal note, congrats to Cruz Pedregon for his performance over the weekend and making all Hispanics proud!

What up Freddy?

PHS, first option should be to stay with Defensive Coordinator “Randy Horton” as the head man. Randy knows what he’s doing when it comes to football and he’ll surround himself with some good coaches on every level.

This next choice is like a first option 1a to me, but “Wardell Crutchfield” should defiantly be in the runnings while keeping Randy as D-coordinator. This would give PHS a guy who is familiar with the Pasadena area, but not from the area. This will take indirect pressure off a guy, who would bring spice and fire to the program. I think the guy has been to the title game, but I know he has coached in some big CIF games.

Keith Jones wouldn't be a bad idea too! If he was considering the job, I would want him to keep our D-coordinator in place, because he knows the kids and we always need someone from Pasadena on the staff to keep them kids coming out there.

Tip Sanders would be a step back for PHS, he is not one of our own! That’s just me though, but PHS is similar to Muir on who can go in coach our school. I know we went 1-9, but we were far from that and a change was needed. Kevin is a good man, but he wasn’t the best football man. Period! That’s my brother and I love him, but this is business and nothing personal. He did a great job, getting the program off it's back and on to its feet! The next guy that comes in will have a fridge full of goodies from every angle!

slaker,

There isn't one soul on this blog who thinks CO's schedule was as tough as nearly anyone elses. CO is the only good team in SGV who plays against very weak competition. I'll bet every team on this blog wishes they played in the Miramont and Southeast division.

FredJ said:

Huckster, always nice having you in here. What's going on with PHS, any thoughts on who their next coach might be? They need to think outside the box now, before Mills took the job four years ago, I thought someone like San Gabriel's Keith Jones would be a good fit. I still do, he's the most underrated coach on that side of the Valley. BTW, good ole' Steve Garrison might be looking for a job soon also....But I'll bet, and mark this down, the next coach will be Tip Sanders. After what he did with Marshall, he's not such a bad choice.

Muir is not going to no “championship”! Period! They’ll be lucky to get past DR this Friday after taking a beating in their win at the “Tussle”! I don’t think Muir has the coaching staff to stand up against the ESGV teams. I do think teams like “CV” and “Burroughs” will be good in this particular conference, though. You guys on the ESGV blogs have to remember, the “Stangs” are a prideful bunch even when the glass is half full! The Stangs had no mercy for us (Pasadena High) in the playoffs last year and I damn sure will not have any for them this year! GO STANGS AND GET STUCK! STUCK! STUCK! YOU BUMS!!!

PS. “King Studd” you’re so darn funny!!!! I like your style!!! I would love to go at it with you one day!

Facts instead of Fiction,

First of all, I have talked to Uncle Bob, many times about what is going on with the current and the past board. Trust me his opinion is very similar to mine. Second like I said, I have been involved with youth boards for over a decade. It is very common for a youth board to lose their non-profit status. The major reason is they don't file their taxes on time. I have never seen a board dissolved due to the fact that it lost it's non-profit status. To take that one step further I have never seen a outside party come to a board meeting and tell the board you are illegal and a revote is required. I don't think you really want to talk about what went on at those board meeting. The illegal activates that the current board was involved in far exceeds the old board losing their non-profit status. Which brings up a very interesting fact, how did the new board open a new corporation and then transfer the funds from the old corporation to the new corporation, that is totally illegal. I am sure the IRS would love to know how you did that. I am very close to many of the old board members. A matter of fact since you must be on the board, from what I hear you are going to have a few of those old board members coming to your board meeting tonight. It's going to be real interesting????

Since the ex booster has brought it up I guess it needs a discussion of facts. You need to go to Uncle Bob and Don and ask them about the misrepresentation of the booster club to the community. Instead of abusing the current Board you need to find out what happened. Quit flapping your jibbs and get your facts straight! The club lost it's non-profit status a few years ago and was operating illegally as a non-profit and the Board wasn't correcting it. That's what happened and folks with no ax to grind know that!

Won the Baseline League? said:

The CO people and South Hills people really live in a fantasy world.
CO guy who sadi they won the Baseline League -
Did you beat Los Osos? No
Upland? No Etiwanda? - No
Rancho? No Tying one team does not a bragging right make. I think if you had to play all four of those teams in a row you would have gone 2-2 or 1-2-1 at best so don't get too excited. BTW - Why don't you schedule the 5 Baseline teams for your pre-season next year.

Normally Miramonte wins are great but let's face it Bonita is no way as talented as CO but they play hard. LA and Wilson are probably the worst they have ever been and Diamond Ranch underachieved at a level of monumental proportions this year. Now, CO you are playing in this SouthEastern Division, if you can call it that. While I admit CO is probably the best team in the Division that to me is not saying much. Who wants to be the best of the mediocre and then brag about it. You should just be quiet and win your title and pretend it is an accomplishment. But the CIF playoffs are supposed to be a step up in competition not down.
If you don't win the title I will laugh my ass off.

As forSouth Hills- quit picking on them everybody. They won the Mid Valley with their stellar performances over Rosemead and Duarte and Northview. Now these are all good teams for theit respective divsiions but the South Hills people like to make claims like they are on par with teams like Los Osos and Corona Centennial. Just because you compete with them in passing league doesn't mean you are on their level. They make a living out of beating up on the meek and mild. At least CO played in the OC division for about 8 years. When is the last tiem South Hills beat a team that was arguably as good as them talent wise or as well coached as they claim to be? Can you say never.
My advice - Know who you are and what you are. Realize you have been given a tremendous gift being placed in the division you are in. But please get over yourselves. Neither of you would get past the second round in the Central division or the first round in the Inland Division.

Prove us wrong- not with your talk but with the schedule. I dare you to place 5 solid teams from those two divisions on your schedule next year. Like Diamond Ranch. Oh we all know what happened there. But at least they had the sack to do it.

I know Glendora didnt go undefeated in League again, but it did win League. And all my money is on Glendora next year. There JV team has won League 4 Years in a row now, and thats saying a whole lot. Ayala, wow they have came out of no where again, im Damn proud of that team. Sorry to the loss about Glendora. You guys really wanted it! And to Chino Hills, another great team, really revenged Glendora on Halloween @ Citrus...
Enough about the season, lets talk postseason!! The Central Division it pretty tough, have some great teams in their.
I hope Glendora makes a great run, i know Coach P hasnt had much success in the post season at Glendora. But this year their in a better division for their skill level. Hope they make a great run, and its too bad we didnt get into the same division as CO...

First off let me start by saying great job this season and congrats on making it to the playoffs..

With that said, what do you get out of pulling the Ganesha card? Yeah you guys beat us and scored 40 points, but let me remind you that 3 of those scores were on blown coverages by our secondary that for the majority of have never played a down of football in their lives before, and a 4th score was on a INT after we were down and had 2 start throwing the ball to get back in the game.

You didn't flat out beat us, we killed ourselves with mental mistakes so please dont try 2 compare yourselves with Covina, or even dare to compare Your league with the VVL!! Simply put your league is weak.

Fred,

I don't understand why you guys keep picking SH time and time again. This team hasn't met the expectations claimed at the beginning at the season. Marginal finishes and not enough killer finishes on others. This team is highly overrated and other schools are overlooked. There is much more talent out there and sometimes too much focus on SH. Articles on SH players like Deen. Although he is a good player, he is not great. Goss and Bowden both good players, but were there artilces on other schools with key players published in the papers. Question article whether or not SH has what it takes, when there's other schools out there. Inflated egos and it shows with the kids. Not enough focus with what it takes to be a championship team. No discipline, especially when you see kids like Vaughn and Imodu with total disrespect attitudes because they don't like being criticized. I feel bad because SH his has been "Hyped up" and aren't living up to it. Hopefully the staff can make these kids, and I do say kids, understand that it is a team effort and not an individual show. In the military if my partner was deep in the fight, I was along side with him. With this team, they walk in different directions.

Here is the list of teams that Covina has played: Bonita, Rosemead, El MOnte, Rowland, San Dimas and Northview,(All CIF Playoff teams) there is now way in hell that you could beat any of those teams.
Azusa: Duarte, Workman and Aquinas. The only tough team on your schedule was Aquinas and look what happen. As for Covina beating Ganesha by 1, hey a win is a win and Covina played against a very determinded team that wanted to win very bad. Just becareful of what you wish for! Covina is far better than there record shows.

As I sit here in my living room sipping my cup of Earl Grey, I am quite stunned to see this side of King Stud. It is quite the oddity that he has decided to come out of the closet and make a prediction or two. Today, King Stud has evolved to a certain extent from a mindless imbecile who posted idiotic comments all day long, to a mindless homophobe, who is taking on the roll of fortune teller. Is this the same donkey boy that I am familiar with ? King Stud, be mindful of one thing (this is coming from my neutral side) and that is that, when you post a comment with predictions as to who will win or who will lose, you will, anger the other half of the people who are reading you’re comments.

That was a good game to see, it should also be noted penalties played a large part in the outcome. CO did not design Miramonte, just rules it.

Coach Backus was not on the sideline last week. Beyond that, a true accounting of the circumstances which led to his absence, are not being explained or made public knowledge. As you would expect, rumor has strangled fact and now there is no clear divider between the two.
I won't add to the misinformed, ill-intentioned slander- by speculating now or anytime on what sparked the absense.
It is an unfortunate situation for a team needing leadership and the impeccable defensive resume that Backus brings to the show.
I am hoping for the best possible outcome for Coach B and the Rams.

Ahhh The playoffs my favorite time of year. Now we get to see how all these teams preform under pressure. First time all year i will take a crack at some selections.

Amat vs Poly: speaking of crack fred please put down the amat crack pipe. I took a look at Poly's games and their three toughest games came earlier in the year vs Northwestern of Miami Newport Harbor and Carson 3 good football programs. They had a cakewalk thru the Moore league as they usually do. Amats signature win was the Crespi game. I consider the OL game an abberation because of the turnovers Lutheran had. Raul Lara is certainly no Jerry Jaso as a head coach but I see poly winning this one 24-7 in a low scoring affair.

CO always seems to play Bell Gardens in the playoffs. CO toughest test might be in the 2nd round vs crescenta valley. Co wins easily this week. 34-14.

Glendora vs West Valley: Glendora always seems to blow it come playoff time. They did win in round 1 last year but Pasqy hasnt gotten deep into the playoffs since his Ayala days. West Valley in a close one 24-21.

Azusa vs Covina. Well its time to find out if Azusa is for real or not. I think their pancake schedule isn't going to help them. Covina hasnt look good at all this year but they have won three in a row and might be peaking at the right time. I still think they can win this one. I agree with fred 34-28 colts.

Muir vs Diamond Ranch: This might actaully be the best game of game to go out and watch. Fred is right it is difficult to beat the same team twice but I still think Muir gets the win here. This means we have to listen to stang fans garbage for at least one more week. Muir 21-7.

Upset of the week
Schurr vs South Hills: Husky fans better hope Bogan gets his kids to refocus after a terrible performance vs West Covina. The Spartans meanwhile have won 6 in a row even though its been against poor competition. Schurr won a title 2 years ago and last year went to the semi's. I think SH is ripe for an upset. Schurr 17-14

no hard feelings...thanks for the explanation...good luck to all teams in playoffs!

I have heard that Randy Backus, the Temple City HC, was put on administrative leave last week for choking a student. Apparently he didn't even get to coach in their last game. Can this be true? If so it is a serious blow to those kids on the team.

Stang fan, I'm taking into consideration that Muir is a little banged up, especially at the impact positions. And you're right, Diamond Ranch hasn't beaten anyone of significance, but they played Bishop Amat tougher than anyone in the Valley, lost 22-21 to Chino Hills, got crushed by Oaks Christian just like you guys. And like I said, I was at the first game. If Thomas isn't a 100 percent, you have to admit, it makes a HUGE difference. Don't act like it would be a huge surprise.

Stang Fan, guess we'll find out on Friday. I didn't realize I picked the Pacific to go 0-4, I wasn't looking at it that way. I went game-by-game and love Cal Hi, and think Rowland at home will be good enough. As for Muir, I was at that first game against Diamond Ranch. Thomas was everything that night, and the Panthers killed themselves with penalties and turnovers. Sorry friend, I've just got a feeling....Personally, Muir winning would be great, I'd love to see them matchup against South Hills, uhhhh, provided the Huskies get by Schurr.

Freddie J,

Hm, hm, hmmmm....drinking the ESGV kool-aid again, hunh?

So the Pacific League is going to go 0-4 in the 1st round. 0-4?!?!?! You are TOO funny man...too, too funny.

The DR Panthers are "hitting their stride?" LMAO!!! Stephen Hawking could be "hitting his stride" against the likes of Nogales, LA, and Wilson.

Cal has to play AT Crescenta Valley against a team that was VERY competitive with St. Francis and runs a tricky little offense.

And you better tell those boys over at Rowland to tighten up those chinstraps this Friday. I understand the Raiders have a hard-hitting D, but Burroughs is JUST as tough or tougher.

Semifinals:

CO vs. Burroughs

Muir vs. WC

Championship:

CO vs. Muir
