Tribskin Pick'em, your predictions and ours

| | Comments (57) |

Steve Ramirez and I will go head-to-head throughout the season, and I will update our records each Monday on the Tribskin Pick'em thread.

Robledo: Last week - 25-7; Season - 192-46
Ramirez: Last week - 26-6; Season - 182-56

Notes: Ramirez got me by one this week and he can have it. I took Bishop Amat and came within seconds of pulling it off, but Poly pulled it out. We all have to tip our hats to Azusa, which includes the Guru and Reg Miller, for taking Covina over Azusa. It wasn't even close. The big shockers of the first round were Santa Fe going down in the Southeast, and if you want to call it a surprise, Diamond Ranch beating No. 3 Muir, which all four of us nailed.

Robledo's picks of note: If I were setting a betting line on San Dimas-Rosemead, it's a pick'em. It's that close. With Nico Barbone back for San Dimas, I don't see how the Panthers stop this offense, and defensively, the Saints are getting some of their horses back. Then again, how do you stop Tra Sumler too? I also genuinely feel there will be a Tribune all-area final four in the Mid-Valley and Southeast. Laugh if you want, but I like all the match-ups, including Duarte over Monrovia in the MD Classic II, my upset special of the week.

Friday's quarterfinal games
Southeast Division

Crescenta Valley (9-2) at Charter Oak (10-0-1), 7:30 p.m. -- Robledo (COAk); Ramirez (COak)
Rowland (9-2) at La Serna (10-1), 7:30 p.m. -- Robledo (Rowland); Ramirez (Rowland)
Diamond Ranch (5-6) vs. South Hills (9-2) at CDF, 7 p.m. -- Robledo (SHills); Ramirez (SHills)
West Covina (9-2) at Burbank (6-5), 7:30 p.m. -- Robledo (WCovina); Ramirez (WCovina)
Mid-Valley Division
Monrovia (9-2) at Duarte (6-5), 7:30 p.m. -- Robledo (Duarte); Ramirez (Monrovia)
San Dimas (10-1) at Rosemead (9-2), 7:30 p.m. -- Robledo (SDimas); Ramirez (SDimas)
Paraclete (8-3) vs Northview (9-2) at CDF, Saturday, 7:30 p.m. -- Robledo (Nview); Ramirez (Nview)
Temple City (6-4) at Azusa (10-1) at Citrus, 7 p.m. -- Robledo (Azusa); Ramirez (Azusa)

Central Division
Paloma (8-3) at Rancho Cucamonga (10-0-1), 7:30 p.m. -- Robledo (RC); Ramirez (RC)
Cajon (10-1) at Ayala (9-2), 7:30 p.m. -- Robledo (Cajon); Ramirez (Ayala)
Glendora (8-3) at Upland (9-2), 7:30 p.m. -- Robledo (Upland); Ramirez (Glendora)
Los Osos (9-2) at Chino Hills (10-1), 7:30 p.m. -- Robledo (Los Osos); Ramirez (Los Osos)

I see you have found another "animal" to torture. In this case it is the "WITHEM" family. You could not have picked a more decent family to torment and have fun with at their expense.

Give it a rest. To you it's just fun and games but to a mother that has endured the tough times she has it very hurtful and real.

Find someone else. Please. No one and i mean no one thinks this is funny. Move on to burning cats alive and work your way up from there. You're a digusting human being. May God have mercy on your pathetic soul.

There you go again opening your mouth when you don't know S***. All of us that know Kyle and his family know the truth. Grow up

JuiceItUp said:

What test did Withem take to prove his innocence? A drug test of course! It is far too expensive to test for certain illegal substances, so in his case his chances were likely to test negative. He is not the first or last to fall for the trap.

WhoCares said:

To Juiced up. Those kids aren't juiced up. Have you seen them? They aren't even big. Kyle is about 185 lbs and Barbone is about 190-195.
You need to learn what a big kid looks like. Don't hate but lets get it right.

Just Wondering said:

All this banter is a moot point... he's playing... so RHS needs to bring their hard hats... they'll need them...

an outsiders opinion said:

Now that i would have to agree would be fair. If he had the 2 compete for the position. Now that is fair. I will be at the game and yes on SD side. And i really hope to see the kid playing that helped the saints have a great season.

To All The Withem Haters said:

Can You Tell Me, How fair is it to punish a seniior by not letting him play his senior year because of something that he didn't do? And even proved that he didn't do it? Can you tell me how fair it is that he had to watch his teammates play without him? How fair is it that if you don't have money that you can not fight the school board? Please tell me how fair is life? The player that filled his shoes did good, no one is saying that he didn't, what most teams do, no matter what, is play the best player in the position that they are the best at. Am I wrong? I am sure that the other player will play maybe the same position maybe another. But I am sure that Coach Z had them compete for the position, it wouldn't just be handed to either one of them.

an outsiders opinion said:

I will assume that you are not calling me a Withem hater. My opinion is, that since Kyle was not allowed to play for whatever reason this season..and his fill in did such a great job. It would not be fair to kick him aside just because Kyle is a great player. Its sad what happen to Kyle, but it would be wrong to kick aside the player that helped and contributed to the Saints great season. That player deserves to play. Can you tell me that you dont agree with that?

To All The Withem Haters said:

I wish that all of you knew the truth before you decided to open your big mouths. Kyle has always put his heart into playing football. If you knew him then you would know that. He was wrongly accused. He even proved it with a test but unfortunatly no one wants you to know about that. He is going to play, and He is going to prove to all of you that he should have been playing this whole time.
If you don't know what you're talking about Keep your mouths shut!

an outsiders opinion said:

I have to agree. I say Kyle should stay out. That other player obviously filled the spot fine and to just kick him aside now, would be unfair. AND KYLE SHOULD KNOW THAT. This other player is the one that played all those games and earned to stay in that spot. HE SHOULD BE THE ONE PLAYING IN THE PLAYOFFS. I would think COACH Z would agree. He is supposely fair to his players. While Kyle made a mistake, but should stay out, and the other player is the one that should be playing. I will be praying for him. He so did earn it!

Question for SD,
I am not that familiar with your team other than what I read in the Trib and on the blog. There seems to be a big focus about Withem coming back this week. He has been out 10 weeks and SD has continued to win. Who was the player that filled for him in his absence.Evidently this player did a decent job of filling the spot. Do you now just dicard this kids effort and loyalty and sit him down because a kid of superior talent ??? who broke school rules and a major one at that and let the team down just stroll back in and assume his starting role as if nothing happened.Yes kids make mistakes but I have seen no one on the blog speak of the kid who replaced him and how unfair it is to him to go this far and have to sit down. I may be wrong on my take but as I stated I am not familiar with SD. Just a question from someone looking in from the outside. I am not even sure Withem is playing but by the posts it seems he is.

Both teams have worked hard and are respected by their peers. The night will be here sooner than we think. Doesn't get any better for the Seniors trying to win one more time.

Give thanks for what you have this week, and enjoy your families.

Good Luck and be safe!

Wowzer! said:

Just Wondering....

Have you seen any of the teams you are talking about.

Im going to to stick with the central division because i have been to a couple UHS, GHS, CHHS, AHS, RCHS, LOHS games. (1 of each and 2 of a couple)

But COME ON.

Los Osos, Is going to have to have their hands full with Chino Hills. Los Osos lost to RC in game they should of won.
Chino hills was nearly perfect this year (1 loss by 1 point). Chino Can HIT and that preppy UCLA kid isnt going to like that. Chino Hills is the underdog here but they just need to play tough D and they will be in it. Pick= Los Osos

Rancho vs Paloma
Well GLendora and Los Osos showed just how weak the Sunbelt League is.
Yes Rancho will win, but they are NOT the team YOU think they are. Yes they are the one of the most balanced teams i've seen this season, however the "WIND GAME" in week 10 against Upland showed me that they dont play well against good teams. Yes they beat Osos but again they showed their flaws in the 4th, and then winning in OT. Their TIE against the all beloved Charter Oak Chargers. Yes Rancho is good, no doubt, but the winner of Los Osos/Chino Hills will win this division. And Your Comment about JCs ....thats just ignorant , JCs arent even in the NEAR caliber.

Glendora vs Upland
Did you see the first game, Uplands QB throws a int and it was his 2nd worst efficient game this season. Glendora had turnover problems and it lost them the game. But being 100% to beat them. COME ON. This isnt USC vs Nebraska or Oklahoma State vs Oklahoma. Upland has too many flaws to be in that caliber

Cajon vs Ayala
Cajon beat etiwanda by 1 point (someone is an alumni or has ties there?) Etiwanda is an above average team but it wasnt their year. Cajon hasnt beat anyone with above .622 win percentage. They lost to OSOS, and like i said. The San Andreas League is pitiful.

Just Wondering You Were right with some of your predictions but for the TOTAL WRONG reasons

New York,
Here is the low down on the comparison as I see it. Gaeta is a little shorter, but thicker. Arm strength is about equal. Both have developed a good understanding of the game. Jack had charisma oozing out his ears. He had that intangible something that makes leaders of men. Gaeta has earned the following of his team mates through hard work, not that Jack didn't work hard. Both are and were very capable quarterbacks, and yes Aztec Pride Jack also excelled on the baseball field.

This week Azusa takes on the Rams of Temple City. How come I haven't read about how big they are? This is to go to the simi's and coach Scherf has the boys ready to go.

Well that might be his problem, He is around 5"8 , and hopefully he grows a little more after High School. He's going to have problem throwing the football over the big boy's in college. Baseball he's find. But??? you'll never know what could happen. Look at Doug Flutie, Exstien- ex Angel, Muggsy Bowes-basketball player etc.

Will you be at the game this Friday? Last Friday was a great game, and Citrus College, was rocking with all kinds of old alumni cheering.

New York, the AZTECS made the front page of the SGV TRIBUNE, following next day and what an honor. Since 1975 AZUSA hasn't won a first round playoff! There's a player who had four interceptions Friday night, one he returned for a touchdown, scored twice on offense by catching the ball in the end zone, and one quarterback sack! Now that kid is the tallest on the team, and stands around 6"3 and can catch a football. Now he is definitely D1 MATERIAL. His name is RAULEY ZARAGOSA, #25.

I have watched Gatea, play Football and Baseball for the last four years, and this kid is a good athlete in both sports! Did you know AZUSA won there League in baseball last year and beat AQUINAS, in the 1st round playoffs, and loss to St. Paul, who played Bishop Amat, in the finals.

The score was 8 to 6,St.Paul, and it was the bottom of the seventh, with bases loaded for AZUSA,with two outs. Gatea hits the ball between center and right field, and the ball looks like it's going in between the gap, but the player from St.Paul is position beautifully, and gets Gatea out. Gatea sinks that ball in the gap, I believe we play AMAT in the finals! Gatea is a all around athlete, and the Baseball team should be good this year also. He has matured in Football this year tremendously, and has learned not to panick when getting sacked!
My opinion is with a good college coach, he could become a force, for whomever he plays for!

AZUSA AZTECS!

It' sounds to me you are a Die Hard San Dimas Fan..... I'm just wondering if you ever thought of how South El Monte and Baldwin Park almost pulled an upset on this mighty team?.... With or with out the Mule. There are several teams left in their way that probably have a player or two that can kick as hard or harder than that And are in much greater shape. For this kid to come out and think that he is in the shape of his life to stop a running back that is probably twice as fast and perhaps just as strong is absurd. If San Dimas fails to put together some defense in the first half of this game they will be a Turtle on its Back the whole second half... So take a deep breath and save some of this energy for your game time cheers.

We Will have to see what happens on Friday at RHS. The panthers will be ready no matter who they line up against including big San Dimas! FEAR THE MEAD!!!!!11

Just Wondering said:

The principle surrounding Rosemead's offense is simple... Summler runs, runs, runs, and when the defense adjusts, a pass or two softens up the process. It works well! It has worked great thus far for Rosemead. Rosemead's pending loss to San Dimas has more to do with the San Dimas offense then anything else. I've said it a hundred times on this blog. The Saints have a tremendous offensive line. They are big, strong, fast, and don't make many mistakes. I just don't see any way Rosemead can keep pace with San Dimas. Rosemead can beat you with Tra Summler. San Dimas can beat you with Nico Barbone or Daniel Joseph or Eric Brown... or their offensive line keeps the pressure away and Kalmar throws the ball. Or Geo Mantilla knocks the snot out of a linebacker... they just have too many weapons. On top of that, they get Kyle Withem back. He was and is again their best defensive player. He hits like a mule kicks. He runs great and closes on the ball as well as any linebacker in the valley. Rosemead can win... but they won't. At least that's how I see it...

I personally think that you are giving Paraclete way too much credit. They were actually a better team last year and barely beat Monrovia in the second round by 2 pts. I would love to see them meet Monrovia in the finals this year. Northview would in fact have a tougher time with TC with TC's ball control game it might alter Northviews game-plan a bit too much. The top 3 teams sit on the top of the Mid-Valley Bracket and I sure by now everyone has their opinion thats why it will truly be a mystery as too who will show up in the Championship game. But first and foremost we must first get to the Semi's. Never overlook your present opponent.

You've seen Paraclete, I haven't but base on what your saying they should be ranked higher in the Division and maybe picked as favorites for CIF.
BE READY VIKINGS!!

Just Wondering said:

anothervikingfan,
Reasonable question. San Dimas was three skilled players away from hammering Northview a few weeks back... they were... Barbone, Kohler, and Withem. They are a very different team than the team the Vikings played three weeks ago... and that's not taking anything away from the Vikings... they played their rear-ends off and deserved the close win. However, Northview (and I'm being objective here) is the fourth best team in their division. Can the beat the top three... maybe... but is it realistic to think they can beat Paraclete, another top team, and then San Dimas or Rosemead in a title game... No chance.

It's a shame you haven't watched Paraclete. They are really strong and well desciplined. By the way... for Paraclete to have pulled off an undefeated season, they would need more talent than San Dimas or Northview... they play much tuffer private school teams.

So back to you question... if Paraclete had three more skilled players... yes they could beat anyone in the SGV. They could compete with the likes of Poly, Lakewood, Servite, and Oaks Christian... no problem.

But they lack some skilled players... so if Northview can exploit their weaknesses, they have a chance... I just don't think they will have the mojo to beat Paraclete...

Good luck to the champs...

Your saying that Paraclete is 2-3 skilled players away from beating San Dimas or Rosemead for the Title? Paraclete has peeked late? Northview has won 7 straight that includes San Dimas. I've never seen Paraclete but if they are 3 players away from beating San Dimas I think we can compete with them.

Cajon has beat who?
El Toro, Sultana, Pacific, Arroyo Valley,etc... impressive...not.

Lost to Los Osos and barely beat an at large team in Etiwanda.

Im JUST WONDERING whether anyone has seen Ayala run the ball this year? Opposing teams load the box with 10 men every game and Ayala's back up running back runs for at least 120 yards every game. When RB samuels is in....its closer to 200 yds. The Ayala O-line/TE is big and will push Cajon around.

Ayala runs away with this one, both Cajon Tds come against the ayala 2nd team D.

Reminiscent of the OU texas tech game.

Sorry I missed last week... I was out of town. A few things bear mentioning this week. First, one this week will actually represent the #1 vs. #2 team within their division. San Dimas vs. Rosemead... it's a shame they ended up on the same side of the bracket... but it is what it is an it promises to be a great game - some of the best games of the season have come out of the Mid-Valley. I mentioned in an earlier blog that Servite should pay attention to Lakewood... well, guess what... Lakewood beat a great Servite team by one point in O/T. I feel the same way about South Hills and Los Osos. Neither Diamond Ranch or Chino Hills can be dismissed. They will come out expecting to win... and you know the mantra... on any given Friday! Anyway, here are my picks for this week:

Southeast Division

CR vs. CO – This has got to be COs game to win or lose. They’ve proven all season that they are the cream of the crop so they get the nod here. CO +14

Rowland vs. La Serna – A couple of great teams. This promises to be a real nail biter and Rowland will have to play great defense to win. I like La Serna here by the thinnest of margins – LHS +3

Diamond Ranch vs. South Hills – SH needs to really show up. I was told Goss is back in the line-up, although I haven’t confirmed it. If he is, they will have a better chance. As it stands, SH will need to be hitting on all cylinders. This is a game that could be decided by non-conventional factors such as special teams, penalties, or coaching. I like SH +10.

West Covina vs. Burbank – WC got the best draw in the division, but they don’t really have the horsepower to compete with CO should a game with CO become a reality. Either way, WC has more than enough mojo to take out Burbank. WC +17

Mid-Valley Division

Monrovia vs. Duarte – This is one of those games where strength of schedule plays into the pick. Monrovia clearly has the better record, but hasn’t played as tuff a schedule as Duarte. I think Monrovia plays better defense, so they get the nod here. MHS +14

San Dimas vs. Rosemead – This is clearly the game of the week. San Dimas was overwhelming against Sierra Vista and Rosemead continues its roll. San Dimas has Barbone and Kohler back already and Withem returns this week. On the other sideline is perhaps the best single running back in the valley in Tra Summler. Problem with Rosemead is – what else can they do. They run really well with Summler but that’s about it. San Dimas can beat you about 10 different ways. I like San Dimas here but they will need another good defensive effort against a strong home team in Rosemead. SD +21

Paraclete vs. Northview – The Valle Vista champs have probably met their match this week. Paraclete has peeked late in the season and are a strong on both sides of the ball. I think Paralete is about 2 or 3 skilled players away from a perfect season and a CIF championship. Either way, I think they have more than enough to take out NV. PHS +17

Temple City vs. Azusa – Wow… what a season for the Aztecs. I’m not a giant Azusa fan, but I can’t help but be proud of them and pull for them! Temple City is much stronger than their record reflects and even though Azusa should win, it still seems like it will be something of an upset… AHS +10

Central Division

Paloma vs. Rancho Cucamonga – Paloma has fielded a pretty good team all season but there are probably a half dozen junior colleges in the area that would have a tuff time stopping RC. They are great on both sides of the ball and a really well coached. RCH +24

Cajon vs. Ayala – In my mind, Cajon is the dark horse to win it all in the Central. They get great linebacker play week in and week out and make very few mistakes. I think they’re the least penalized team around… play really smart. Ayala is a scrappy bunch that plays a real physical brand of football but will come up short this week. CHS +17

Glendora vs. Upland – I’m a big Glendora fan, but they really have their work cut out this week. Upland’s all-everything QB has been unstoppable this season and this game will be no exception. Glendora will need a 100% perfect effort to have any chance against Upland. UHS +14

Los Osos vs. Chino Hills – It will be easy for LOHO to dismiss CH and they had better not! Chino Hills can win this game. Much like Glendora, it will take a perfect effort, but Chino Hills can play nearly perfect football. LOHS +17

What a fantastic season it’s been! A number of teams that aren’t normally in the mix this late find themselves with a real chance at a CIF trophy! Here’s hoping everyone stays safe and the best teams win!

Happy Thanksgiving all!

South Hills 21 Diamond Ranch 17(good close game, but south hills with a little too much for DR to compete with)

"In the bottom half all I keep hearing from area coaches is how legitimate Paraclete is. The winner of Paraclete-Northview should go to the final and to show I'm not a complete homer, I'll listen to what people are saying and take Paraclete."

Now you fli-flop and take Northview...what are you seeing or hearing Fred?
