Charter Oak product Will Harris has started at Strong Safety since Kevin Ellison's injury and before being promoted to a full-time starter was their fifth defensive back and Nickel during the first half of the season.
He is one of only a very few returning starters on next year's defense and after yesterday's performance will get plenty of hype in the offseason as a key returner and will be a projected first day draft choice a year from now.
His statistics yesterday included a fumble recovery, sack, and an interception to go along with multiple solo and assisted tackles. What was really exciting is when he announced himself he said he was from Charter Oak, California.
Thanks Joe Amat for speaking on behalf of Charter Oak and as an Bishop Amat supporter actually saying something positive and productive about the Chargers.
Harris actually has worked his way up to being the starter at Strong Safety for the Trojans and also had an interception in the Rose Bowl.
Right now watching Jonathan Cornell (Amat '06) starting at middle linebacker for Ole' Miss in the Cotton Bowl.
Steve or Fred,
Did you get a chance to see Walter Thurmond play in the Holiday Bowl that 123 mentioned?
It was a fun game to watch,
Oregon was losing to Oklahoma State when Walter Thurmond took the second half kick off and returned 91 yards to spark Oregons comeback. He also had an interception and a nice tackle in open fiel to save a touchdown.
Thurmonds been a stellar player in the pac 10 these last couple of seasons and a key player in Oregons secondary.
I also notice formrer CO standout Will Harris is getting some playing time
for SC this year, he recovered a fumble in the Rose Bowl yesterday, he and Thurmond played against each other in highschool and it looks like they are going to do the same in college.
Funny thing about the Tiger story is most people wouldn't even consider the bigger picture that his career paints.
He played as a freshmen for one of the most storied programs in the SGV and one of the most storied coaches in the SGV yet he's where he's at. Hope he's having the time of his life but wow that's stunning on so many levels.
How many people could have predicted this outcome after reading the Tger write ups al these years?
Let's put high school sports and these "legends" into perspective this year.
Everytime I see one of my kids coming out of practice or after a game I always ask them the same thing...every time.
"Did you have fun?" Win or lose. Monster minutes or DNP. Scored a bunch or missed a big shot....I always say the same thing. "Did you have fun?"
Sometimes they just look at me and smile. Other times they just a me in disbelief. But they know why I ask. Playing is a decision they've made. That means you take the good with the bad and move on. Life is what matters. Sports might teach us wonderfully cruel and glorious lessons about ourselves but it's only a game....it's NOT life. Life is Life!
How many bloggers thought Daniel Harper and Ryan Mc Mann would have Rose Bowl rings this year?
Grades as much as their skill set got them there. Both are having the time of their young lives I sure. In fact I know they are. I believe one was accepted to Georgetown and the other to Stanford before walking on to USC. Academics, and the discipline IT requires, prepared them and availed to them greater CHOICES FOR THEIR FUTURE.
Best of luck to all the athletes this year. Hit the books hard, play hard and most importantly ...HAVE FUN!!!!!!
It'll be over before you know it.
how about the glendora cheer leaders...now they had game!
Oops, forgot the kicker!
11. K. Eden @ Citrus (handled all FG & PATs)
More on Glendora guys:
Last year's solid senior class is well represented on Saturday's. I believe 9 or 10 are still playing the game, although 4 or 5 others could be. No big timers of course but a lot of quality players. Here's the ones I know of (several redshirts who you may hear more from next yr.)
1. M. Edwards @ Mt. Sac (nice season as a Fr. WR)
2. R. Young @ Citrus (played some as DB)
3. B. Beckwith @ APU (moved to LB, a few reps on Special teams)
4. R. Horn @ Citrus (Red shirt)
5. M. Niles @ Citrus (Red shirt)
6. R. Noriega @ Citrus (I believe got a some reps on OL)
7. Karnowski @ Citrus (Red shirt I believe)
8. A. Bauchman @ Chaffey (played on OL)
9. R. Agierre @ Chaffey (I believe saw time on OL)
10. M. Denerson @ LV (some reps on Special teams and DL)
Not bad for one class. Would like to have seen guys like Vega, Jackson, Bowdrey, Kovar, Nichols etc. give it a go at a local DIII
Joe Amat
I can feel your frustration about getting love for breaking stories.
I first broke the story about CJ guerrero to fred and didn't get much love. Doesn't matter but its funny how they just make it seem like they found it out on their own. Someone always tips it first
Vega is at Poly Pomona, and not playing
Benny Rodrigrez is no where
Mike Edwards is at Mt. Sac with the 2nd most starts for a receiver
Jordan Edmond going to Poly SLO but only running track and under the restrictions of his scholy he cant play ball.
thats just my limited knowledge of a few glendora players
Walter Thurmond III from West Covina High played in the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl yesterday. He had one interception and a critical 91 yard kickoff return.
Whittier Christian is a high school. Castenada is at D3 Whittier College.
Ray Rodriguez is at San Jose St. playing DE.
Rex Foss is at Humbolt State University.
It is with great sadness that we inform you of the death of alumnus of the Class of 1985, James Gustaveson. James passed away on December 21, 2008. It is our understanding that he suffered a heart attack. Here is a link to his obituary if you would like more information: http://www.southvalleyobits.com/classifieds/XcCPViewItem.asp?ID=280640
Those who remember Jim's selfless attitude at Amat also recall that he was noted for being the blocking fullback for Eric Bieniemy's sophomore year as running back for the Lancers as well as playing linebacker for Amat.
James leaves behind a wife and 3 young children, and his family is in a tough financial situation now. A fund has been set up for them by his sister.

Aaron Harris
The former running back from Baldwin Park High School
Played Defensive Back for Fullerton JC
I watched the Maryland-Nevada game yesterday to see former brahma standout Jon Amaya play. He was a walk on starter as a true freshman for Nevada and has been a 3 year starter. He looked good playing safety and had a key interception that helped Nevada come from 2 td's behind to tie the game. Unfortunately Maryland recovered to win by 7.
From what i've heard, Phillip Chase got some time playing the secondary at Citrus. Rex Foss went up north to play ball at Sonoma or Chico???(somebody correct me if i'm wrong). Matt Castenada is playing ball at a D-3 school called Whittier Christian. Travis Eschardies is nowhere to be found. Anthony Hile went up to UCDavis to play ball, but i heard he is no longer there. Mendrum went to University of San Diego to play football, along with both of the Thompson twins from Charter Oak. Jon Joe is playing ball at Mt. Sac and rumor on the street is that he's getting looks from UCLA. McD is also nowhere to be found. Wherever these men are nowadays, it should be said that this was a fun class to watch!!
what ever happened to chad norys and phillip chase from rowland heights?
what ever happened to travis escarhise, anthony hile and mark mendrum ?
what ever happened to rex foss, ray rodriguez and contreras from los altos?
what ever happened to pychi and the two twin giant linemen from charter oak?
what ever happened to mike mc donough from covina?
what ever happened to jon joe and mahoney from san dimas?
what ever happened to jesse cervantez from bishop amat ?
what ever happened to that to benny rodriguez and jake vega ?
anyone kow if they are still playing
what ever happen to aaron harris? star RB from BP who graduated i believe 2 0r 3 years ago?
So it's not really plagiarism, more like a coinkydink.
Yeah, that's what it is.
Ok, to set the record straight if you read what I wrote and what Joe wrote -- which honestly don't remember reading -- they are two entirely different words and meaning. Some one asked what Dominic Tiger-Cortes was doing, so the other night while suffering through the heartbreak of a Cowboys defeat, I did an Internet search and found the HINU website. I clicked on the stats link and then wrote off Tiger-Cortes' numbers, so it wasn't a cut-and-paste as our 'good friend' Whitey suggests. I believe there is just no pleasing him.
But back to the subject matter, my understanding of plagiarism is 'the use of another parties words and ideas as your own.' I understand the use of others ideas as being of similar material not subject matter, which this case means where Tiger-Cortes is going to college. I will also say that while I covered NHRA, I would always write a story how teams where adjusting to new rules, it being the race of the season. I would get quotes from racers, and strangely enough I would see similar stories with similar quotes in the Phoenix, Florida and Las Vegas papers - similar qoutes, but not the same quotes. That was more copy of one's work than in this case.
I hope that answers your questions, even Whitey's.
Joe, Dom F has the best foot wedge you have ever seen.
joe amat are you seriously that desperate for attention? dude - come on- quit begging. don't your wife or kids give you enough ups to fulfill your sorry ego?
Lehigh... a man after my own heart !:?)
Joe, you can thank coach lehigh for the extra strokes yesterday.
JFR,
Sorry about not taking you up on the links offer. I can throw it better than hit it for sure. Just hit a few extra for me!
Mr Joe, once again, YOU ARE THE MAN! Steve, I would play quiet instead of doing a follow up, OUCH.
Fred, If your a betting man on the course you missed out big time yesterday, next time.
great reporting Ramirez! or is it cut and paste, don't you guys have a term for people who use others work?
Steve-O,
I keep feeding you and Freddy info and breaking news with no love at all. I'm carrying you guys! OK - not "carrying" ... but helping a bit?
Tell me you didn't read this!

A while back a friend of mine that lives in Lawrence, Kansas sent me an email because he saw Tiger-Cortes' name on a roster at "Haskell Indian Nations University" and it says he's from Los Angeles This guy thinks that anything in SoCal is LA!
He doesn't think the school gives scholarships, but he sent me the school website and apparently Haskell is an NAIA school for federally recognized American Indians that has no tuition as it is subsidized by the government as part of a treaty. Probably that Mahatten deal. I'm sure that DTC received financial aid to cover his room and board.
He is playing behind a guy named Solomon Horse-Chief. No lie. They also have Terrance Little-Thunder, Benjamin Carry-Water, and Clint Not-Afraid. I am not making that up.
After seeing him his phenomenal senior year I can't believe something different (better?) never presented itself. An injustice Billy Jack needs to look into.
"....one tin soldier rides away"
sorry... look it up !:?)

FWIW, even though this feature gets few comments, I bet it gets a good number of hits.
It is great to update everyone on our athletes that we enjoyed watching. Thanks for providing it.
Happy New Year!
