Big year for running backs
I was in an all-area discussion last week when the subject of running backs came up? With two first-team spots available, how do you choose between so many deserving contenders? In no particular order, I'll list what I consider the best ten, you take it from there.

Ricky Johnson, West Covina, 1,806, 17 TDs
Brandon Stansell, Rowland, 1,095, 11 TDs
Adam Muema, Charter Oak, 1,656, 24 TDs
Tra Sumler, Rosemead, 2,026, 26 TDs
Nico Barbone, San Dimas, 958, 18 TDs
Deshawn Gaisie, Bishop Amat, 1,099, 18 TDs
Brian Spirlin, Diamond Ranch, NA
Daniel Joseph, San Dimas, 1,406, 21 TDS
Jordan Canada, Duarte, 1,956, 18 TDs
Andre Holmes, Glendora, 1,123, 14 TDs

Muema is the best running back in the valley... You have to see this guy to beleive it.. If you played against him you know!! He fakes guys out of their shorts! Catch him if you can. IF YOU HAVENT SEEN HIM, DONT TALK CHIT!!
Wow! That doesn't sound fair. How are they expected to compete with teams that do offer scholarships? Sounds to me like if they should be dropped down to D III or to a lower level NAIA school.
Reality Chick,
Get a job or find a hobby! You are all over the place and never seem to make any sense of anything. What do you know about McBride? Kids improve fast, there are many factors and variables in between. What is your point? Let me give you an example, there is a certain xcountry runner at LA who last year was average at best with very little talent and running ability but always worked hard. This year he worked harder, matured, and competed in bigger races. End result, League MVP, and hands down SGV tribune runner of the year!
FBFan,
University of SD offers athletic scholarships in all sports but football.
Don and Just Wondering, Not all D I-AA schools offer scholarships. I don't know if it has changed, but I know that the University San Diego was a non-athletic scholarship school.
LilBushLeague-good point. who you play matters when it comes to stats. A year ago McBride was going to be Amat's third option and went to Los Altos and looked all world against that level.
all these Running back are good ,,some have cake schedules where they pad their stats. some have skill but no O-line, some have a awesome passing game s which neutralize the defense so the run game excells (CO) and some have just natural ability ,and those with the natural ability are the backs that beacome great ones. Ricky Jonhson from W C has only been playing Football not Running back,, but I mean Football for only 3 yrs counting this year, And everyone know's that WC runs the ball, so he see's alot of 8 to 9 man fronts and WOW look what he has done. He is still learning the position, he is something special to watch. GO BULLDOGS!
All year it has been one a at a time for the Panthers and the Monrovia game will be no different. The staff will have them ready for another war Koffler knows what he has to do.
I guess stupidity runs wild in RM.
Man I’m glad my kid goes to Amat. After listening to both interviews it’s pretty apparent football is the only thing taught at RM. How pathetic.
Ouch, some of us understand your point.
OUCH!!!!

ouch! whats your point? and what does it have to do with high school football or the beat down san dimas received from the 'mead?
Facts somehow show the real truths about some of Rosemead’s problems...
The average parent education level is 1.92 (where “1” represents “not a high school graduate” and “5” represents graduate school.). Data analysis shows yearly increases in student population over the last four years. Approximately 10% of the student population is receiving Special Education services and almost 77% of all students come from
backgrounds where the language spoken at home is other than English.

get away. nobody likes you. get lost, im pretty sure nobody will miss yo stanky ass....
Hows that Rosemead beatdown feeling? hahaha....bye bye best team of san dimas history
Trojan Man?
You made a turn for the worst when you started talking trash about trash. I'm sure you're a better T. man than that. Brush it off.
Oh and BTW, I too was at Bahookas and you twisted the truth, the parents (my friends) were saying the bleachers were too small for our crowd and nothing more. And , yes I saw you too!
Be Cool
sd mom are you a milf?
oh my god sd mom...
GET OVER IT ALREADY!!!!

When your coach has the balls to report to MaxP then we'll see the real comparisons to all the backs out here.
SD MOM and Saint,
lol, i was not at the rosemead game. im just saying, san dimas played 12 games, if he missed 4 games, that still leaves him with 8 games to rush for over 1,000 yards. they was too much hype about him. all you san dimas fans spent too much time on this blog making him seem like a spectacular player that he probably wasn't as good as you guys made him seem. is he good? yeah, but he should of had a better year. all and all, ricky johnson is still playing this friday and nico isn't.
Sumler is the best player period in the SGV.
Trojan man:
San Dimas will be back, mark my words... and where will your team be without Tra??? our JV was undefeated and our Freshmen went 9-1... so its not BYE its see ya later...c-ya in the 09 season.......SAINTS SAINTS... Not Rated high enough!!!!!lol
Trojan man:
You are an emarrasement to the SC name....
Trojan Man
Wallace is back! LOL
How's Andy and those SC jersey's?
boomer
Barbone was out 4 games and is over 1000+ with Rosemead.
When he went out was second in yards and led in TD.
Kids a baller with grades and over 4000+ yards in career and I think 55+ tds.
The only one on this list with hard nose, tuff yards, in the middle of a wing-t. Overrated, very doubtful..
May be one of the best two way player around.
SD Mom,
Na Na Na Na...
Na Na Na Na...
Hey Hey Hey... GOODBYE !
Without a doubt in my mind..Ricky Johnson is is one of the best in the Vally and deserves 1st team!...nobody on this list can do what he can do on the feild...he gets the job done when u need him the most...hes lead his team to many victories and has had an outstanding year so far..and he is not even close to done...if u ever went to see him play in a live football game or ever played against him...u know what Im talking about...let's not forget this is only his 3rd year even playing the sport...and now he is already one of the best in the Vally...and to add to those stats up there he has an amazing 9.3 yards a carry!...and let's not forget he's only a Junior!...this kid has had some amazing runs this year that no one on that list above has had...like that game winning TD flip over South Hills with 30sec left...it takes a true athlete to do something like that...he's a great RB and Deserves that 1st team spot.
D3 does not give football scholarships. I lost my scholarship at a D2 school in the 80's because they were dropping to D3. I Had to transfer to keep my eligibility down a division or lose a year. If you transfer to an equal level you lose a year.
Adam Muema is hands down the best running back in the valley he has everything breakaway speed, rb vision, elusiveness, and still is not afraid to pound a defender. His stats should play no role because it wouldnt be fair if Coach Farrar had kept him in the whole game...he has had 100 yards in the first half of 7 (maybe more) of his 12 games played. Muema for president!
TO ALL OF THE SAN GABRIEL VALLEY BLOGGERS WHO NEED MORE IN-DEPTH NOTES ON JORDAN CANADA, HIS STATS ARE QUITE DECEIVING, HE PLAYED IN ONLY 8 GAMES THIS SEASON AND STILL HAD 1,956 ON 149 ATTEMPTS WITH A YPG AVERAGE OF 195.6 YRDS. NOW IF THIS ISN'T BY FAR THE BETTER BACK ON THIS SIDE OF THE VALLEY THEN WHO IS?... IF BISHOP AMAT ON DOWN HAD THIS KID ON THEIR TEAM THEY WOULD STILL BE PLAYING FOOTBALL. TRUST. NOT ONLY IS HE A GREAT RUNNING BACK, HE IS ALSO ONE OF THE BEST ALL PURPOSE PLAYERS I HAVE EVER SEEN AND THE BEST PART ABOUT HIM IS THAT HE IS A JR.
Boomer: you must have been one of those ignorant fans on the rosemead side yelling Over rated huh?
Weeks ago I said that Gilmore was the most talented back I had seen all year. Nothing I have seen the rest of the year has changed that. He has that explosiveness that just makes a running back great. Unfortunately, his senior year was a wreck, for whatever reason(s).
Burroughs Dominique Barnes was probably the second best RB I personally saw this year. After that was Johnson-WC, without seeing the stats, I would bet he had his least productive game against Rowland. Of course, Stansell of Rowland has been outstanding and is right there with the above two.
Muema and Sumler I have not personally seen. Their stats are overwhelming, knowing that that they sat a portion of most games. I put Muema on 1st team rather than Sumler as CO played a bit stiffer competition than RHS. If I saw Sumler in person, I could feel differently. Still, his stats are incredible.
Sylvester Stewart,#27, DBar. 785 yds, 11 TDs on the team with the smallest and least productive line in the Sierra League and maybe the SGV. Easily an 1800yd, 20TD guy at CO or WC.

ha we all know canada wont be on the list, "his competition is terrible" thats what everyone would complain about if he was. But id take him over everyone else on here, hands down no questions asked.
Don...
Thanks for the information. I knew I was out of wack some... are these rules/regulations fluid in nature or do they remain the same year in and year out? Also, when a kid says "I got a full ride" what exactly does that mean... ie... Books, tuition, housing, food, stipends.... etc...
In the FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision), formerly called, (and still called by old f@#&s like me), Division 1-A , there are no partial scholarships, they are all “Full”. These schools needs to have no fewer than 76.5 football scholarship players to maintain their status, (don't ask me where they get that ½ player; might be a “Rudy” thing), and they may have as many as 85 scholarships at any one time.
The FCS, (Football Championship Subdivision), (used to be the Division 1-AA), are allowed as many as 63 scholarships which they may divide in any way they like among no more than 85 players so I guess theoretically, a school could end up with 85 kids receiving 74% schollies.
Confused yet?
NCAA Division II schools which used to be called Division II, hahahahah gotcha, may distribute as may as 36 scholarships in any way the like. As if that weren't confusing enough, some DII conferences further limit scholarships to ensure parity, (or just save money).
NCAA Division III schools have no provisions for athletic scholarships.
NAIA, (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics), allow participating schools 24 scholarships which may be divided as the school sees fit.
Ruben #23 for Muir Mustangs is the best back in the area
And no one can say other wise
It is a total shame there is no mention of Gilmore on this thread. Good back robbed of a senior year due to just plain bad coaching ,nothing more nothing less. Here's hoping he has a great track season and a school picks up on his abilities.
Just Wondering, I'm just wondering where you get your information regarding college scholarships from? You're totally wrong!
Just FYI for those of you who think some of these players will get D-1 opportunities or a "full ride" from a D-2 or D-3 school (i.e. Azusa Pacific)... I think only D-1 schools offer scholarships and rarely is a freshman offered a full-ride. Most often a youngster is offered a partial scholarship for their first year or two... unless he/she is a bluechip prospect (ESPN top 150 type) and then a full-ride might happen. Schools like LaVerne and APU don't offer athletic scholarships nor do junior colleges.
The fact is this... these 10 young men represnt our very best (SGV) and I really don't think any of them will make it to a big time D-1 program... maybe Gaise due to the Amat exposure. Maybe Sumler or Johnshon provided the grades are there.
The valley will be fortunate to see maybe 2 or 3 players get big offers. The Guru might give some direction on who he thinks the 2 or 3 will be.
Either way, they young men have really done their respective schools proud. They've all played with great heart and as seniors have surely built memories that will last a lifetime.
I played football for many years and at every level and my fondest memories are still those from my high school days.
Good luck to these boys and I hope they all get a chance to put on the pads again in college!
Muema would be putting up some very serious numbers if he played the whole game all season. With CO, though, everybody gets some action. He's only a junior! Way to Go Adam!
I know this is a RB thread but what is the latest on SH's Cameron Deen's College offers. Has he nailed down a deal with anyone?????
Joseph led the Valley Vista in Rushing.
Hey Boomer
RJ had 209 againts Burbank
Tra Sumler is the best all-around back in the valley!!! I saw him play from the sidelines twice this year and he was a cut above everyone else. He runs hard as hell - is very strong - has good size & speed and has that "un-coachable" attitude all great players carry on the field.
Ricky Johnson is a close second: he is a better ATHLETE than Sumler, but Tra is a better back... does that make sense?
I think he would be able to start at a large WAC school, but not sure if he could be a quality player at a large D-I school like SC, Arkansas, etc.
What about Teague at Pomona, He had 1200 yards total and led the VVL in rushing
Running backs cannot run and gain yards without a blocking fullback, they should be mentioned too, run. block & hit, that is what football is.
Barbone would have been much higher on this list... he missed several (3 or 4 I think) games with an injury... hard to say what the totals would have been... but either way, Sumler, Gaise, Canada, and Johnson were all just stellar!
All though playing small ball, Sumler might be the best running back in the group. Therefore, Sumler and Gaise 1st Team, Johnson and Muema 2nd Team. Are people referring to Sumler when they talk about student-athletes not having grades? If so, Coach Koffler is doing a disservice to Rosemead because Sumler's older brother went to Rosemead as well and was as good or better than Tre and had no grades. I can't be sure though that Koffler was the head coach.
Are you kidding? Sumler is not only the BEST rb in the SGV, but the BEST football player period!
wow, nico barbone didn't even get over 1,000 yards rushing? talk about over rated. i'd take ricky johnson for his big games when they were needed against bonita and south hills, i didn't see him again burbank though.
1st team-Muema and Stansell, 2nd team-Sumler and Johnson...Honorable mention-Walnut's Leonard Rhodes looked to be a pretty tough customer all year.
Student-Athletes
I would have to agree with you. I would question if the SGV awards are real football life awards. Do we reward our kids for poor grades at home or in school? It appears this is a way to recognize football performance but lacks real life realities. That why HAG, "win or lose" will make a difference.. because getting to the next step only happens with grades..
Hey Small Balls,
Know WTF your talking about before you post. SHYT TALKER.
Muema and Sumler 1st team.
SD backfield 2nd team.
Me for POY!
I would love to see academics enter into this and other awards.
If were teaching our kids life lessons (LIke Hag), then why not?
Sure would separate the real "student athlete" from the boys..
and BTW, my vote for RB's on the AAT goes to Muema and Sumler.
the game with the smaller ball
Numbers are just the only factor for Awards. Look at last year winner. Didnt have the most..
We could debate leagues, and Sumler was very poor over everyone on this list.
Just get into CalPreps..
smaller balls game,
D ll schools have 36 Football scholarships to award.
Division I-A have 85 and Division I-AA have 63.
a D2 ride somewhere, hey Amat parent, there are no athletic scholarships in D2, get a clues, his best bet is NAIA like Azusa Pacific or a similar school and Fred put me down for Johnson and Sumler, with Sumler deserving of POY honors, top notch football player on both sides of the ball, Gaisie and Muema for 2nd team honors, although they are both a ways behind the top 2. Late
Fred:
What are all the categories this year?
All numbers aren't rolled up yet..
Looks like some schools haven't updated.
Tra actually has 31 touchdowns if you add the San Dimas game.
DeShawn Gaise Ran and played against some of the top teams out there still in the playoffs. He was sucessful in doing so. Unlike his brother Dominique who was injured most of the time during his days as a running back at Amat, DeShawn kept himself in great shape and played a full season, Retuning kicks and punts he also was a great addition there to Amats team this year. He is one tremendous Athlete, altho his lack of size hurts his chances as a D1 player. Hope he gets a D2 ride somewhere. Great kid with lots of respect for adults.
competion time, email me some information, and I'll get it on the blog.
Fred, Just want to let you know we're entering Competition Season for Cheer.
