Boys Hoops: Bonita untouchable so far

| | Comments (13) |

Best team: Let's start with the obvious: Bonita is the best team in the Valley. They won the Glendora/Rowland tournament, they beat Chino Hills in sort of a tournament of champions game at Glendora. They just whipped Alhambra 62-38 to capture the Alhambra tournament to improve to a perfect 11-0. They're off until Miramonte League play begins, which should be a good head-to-head battle with Diamond Ranch (3-1, not updated).

Surprises: You would have to say Bishop Amat. Can you believe they're 10-1 after beating Damien, 47-46 in the championship of the West Covina tournament on Saturday? It's not like they've had some big senior transfers, they're doing it with hard work. You have to give coach Brandon Ertle a lot of credit, they 're so much better than last year. Walnut (7-2) is also turning heads after beating Amat to win the Arroyo tournament last week.. That should be a great battle in the San Antonio with Rowland, South Hills and Nogales. Northview is sort of a surprise too. They're 8-3 but two of those losses came to Bonita, and they beat Glendora, who has done well since losing to the Vikings. Charter Oak at 7-2 is also impressive, though not like football, they will get swallowed up by the best in the Miramonte.

from what i have heard. Coach Eckler. like many teams, does not feel the need to turn in stats. so opponents can know as little as possible. anyways this team has no superstars and not any crazy talent. they have different leading scores every game. literally. they are the true meaning of a team. but i guess its a strategy move not to put stats up so other teams cant scout too much.

b-ball, i see what you meant. So how do we get the coaching staff at Bonita to turn in stats to MaxPrep?

what im saying is that they are the goltath of basketball right now. 11-0. winning 2 tourneys. right now everyone is looking to bring down this team. because whoever does it first. then theres going to be talk. Bonita is goliath. Hands down. No one can touch them right now.

Who is Goliath? I am new here... but i thought Glendora WAS the team around this neck of the woods (yeah moved from the city, attended Fairfax HS) but after being here two years and my son is now at Bonita I am not sure who Goliath is??? I know it's not Bonita as from what I have heard they are not a sports power house, although most of their teams have done very well this year. So I ask "who is Goliath?"

Bonita is playing fundamentally great basketball. They are 11-0 and should continue winning. They have no big stars, but they play as a team. I believe they are the team to beat and everyone is looking to take "Goliath" down. Who thought these preps could go this far? no one. exactly why i am hopping aboard the BoHi train!

Besides the fact that Bonita is in the Covina tourney, they will also be playing against San Dimas and Gamien before they start league play. You need to step up your research/journalism game up. Thanks

I heard Diamond Ranch are playing some tough teams before league, this strategy may help them come league just like the football team
They seem to be doing really well so far
Can't wait for the Bonita Dranch game...

We haven't updated our prep page since Thursday, which means we missed a lot of big games that we've covered. We're in the middle of a developing a new system from moving our stories from print to the web so be patient, we'll have this solved in a day or two.

Let's start at the beginning. A lot of credit for Bonita's successs goes to Carroll Wheatley. He's one of the nicest men you will ever meet and always greets you with a smile and a "How you doing?"

He had a plan to help kids improve their skills thru the La Verne Stars Program taking kids to tournaments and keeping that core unit playing just about year round.

Best of luck to all the players. And a BIG THANK YOPU TO THE WHEATLEYS

Congratulations to the Bonita Bearcats on a great start. Abernathy, Bennett, Miller, Fossas, Woodruff, Sandhu and Northrup have stepped up early but there's a long way yet to go. There coach, Eckler, you don't hear much about but he has to be doin' something good also.

Where are the stories from this weekend? I saw a writer at Alhambra vs. Bonita...

How is Northview a surprise? They've won the Valle Vista League the past two years, and were ranked No. 3 by you to begin the season. Bonita deserves to be No. 1, but Northview is second best. Believe, their win over Glendora was not an upset. They were just too quick to the Tarts.
