What I find real interesting is all Gano's friends come on this blog and talk about how Gano is now not quiting until the end of the school year. Knowing the snake that Gano is I sure hope someone keeps an eye on him. I have a real strong feeling that he is going to continue to get paid by the Hacienda La Puente Unified School District while working on Damien issues. If our school district is paying him he surely better be working on Los Altos issues and not leaving early to work on his other job. If he is going to continue to work at LA it will be LA work, if not we as parents need to address this issue with the school district. I for one am not going to allow him to get a free ride. He has screwed LA enough the last two years.

Your right about softball being year round but were talking about High School softball,there still alot of girls coming to HS that are not playing travelball (year round) maybe they are mulitsport or maybe they dont have parents that have the time to have them on a year round team? Who knows the reason, but I'm talking HS softball just do the job that was given and you accepted......thats all I'm saying.

O almost forgot why do you think LA has a pretty good team? They practice when the new school year starts and start to gel from the beginning you know how important that is for team chemistry and that helps to keep the younger girls in our area interested in coming to play for a winning program instead of choosing school B.

Yes he should have made allowances for the responsibilities he already had in front of him such as AD and softball coach and I don't know why he didn't but the facts are as they are. He didn't...if everything you say is true.

Softaball is a year round sport is it not? Shouldn't the players and parents have been in tournaments year round? Separate from Gano and the school?

Maybe the facts will play themselves out in your favor in the long run. I truely hope so.

What do you know?? How to be a quiter and not a man of your word? It doesnt matter if the grass looks greener on the other side! We wish Gano well at his new school hopefully he and his new team have some great years together. But why not finish his job the way he started with it! When he took over the team last year it was pretty much set, things were in order the program was ready for a new and exciting year, and thats how he should have left it, knowing the new CIF rules changed for softball this year he could have had the team set and some practice games against other schools in the San Gabriel Valley and really showed us that our team was gonna be ready for the new season:) Instead what we got were many cancelled practices, no Varsity/Jr Varsity team rosters no practice games and Not one meeting with the parents of what exactly is going on just alot of he said she said And that is what is not fair to the softball team, leave but like any other job make sure your s@#! is taken care of. What kind of example are we showing our young people today when you just do a job half fast and you expect them to respect you? When you show them no respect?

That is two years in a roll that Gano leaves a LA program and in poor situations. That is what they are upset about. Walk away at the end of the season don't walk away weeks before the season starts.

So are you telling us that he didn't quit as head coach of the softball team. Are you also telling us that the softball team has been scrimmaging like the rest of the valley? I got my information from a very involved parent on that team and repeated by a close friend of Gano’s. Or are you just saying that he changed his mine and is know staying at LA as the AD through the end of the year and you just want to put a positive spin on a very negative act.

Wilson came into Keifer in the '80s and played a GREAT game. Gave the Lancers everything they could handle, something like 24-22, Amat. A bunch of Wildcats got dinged up and they lost a few at the beginning of league. Our matchup was discontinued after that, but that was a really good Wilson team. Do you remember if that was that during Thomas' years? I think he would do a nice job at Wilson. Would he want to leave Covina?

Lets get this right. Recruiting is illegal whether you are a Catholic school or public school. Does it happen ,YES. If Gano recruited before, he will proobably do it again. What he will create is a Sierra League full of coaches battling for players in the area just so they can compete. Watch the CIF transfer pages light up this year for Sierra League teams. Kids (or should I say parents) looking for their best chance to shine. Like the Bonilla kid at Diamond Ranch, 06 @ Bishop Amat, 07 @ Chino Hills, 08 @ DR. Just call it a bonafide address change, convince your AD and principal to sign off and whalla, new school this year. Until the schools and CIF crack down on recruiting Gano should be successful.

I'm a little curious about some of the references here to “recruiting” and transfers. Some of you guys seem to be advocating an open invitation to say, any underclassman in the area specifically to play football.

Am I reading this right?

If I am, what other criteria would you have, and what kind of support would you be willing to provide: academic, financial, transportation, whatever?

If there were, let's just say, a kid who was struggling with his current school's classwork and having trouble making grades but was a 16 year old Toby Gerhart or Mark Sanchez would you hook him up with a tutor? How about getting him to school if he lived in Brea or Fontana? What if the parents couldn't handle the tuition?

Well I can’t say I am going to miss Gano, I can say I am glad to see him go. I feel for those seniors at Damien that get bumped out of their starting spots by one of Gano’s recruits (aka back office deals). Once he starts the recruiting machine up over at Damien, you are more than welcome to use the “GRI” name. This is a shared name that the loyal Los Altos family has been using on this blog and we have no issue passing it off to the Damien family.

I think you are seeing a trend because of the budget in the public school systems. Prominent ex-coaches and AD's retiring from the public school system because of the cuts to the athletic programs. These men are not of the normal retirement age but have decided to leave the nonsence that is called the California Public School System. I have met Gano and watched his teams play for a number of years. The only knock I ever had, and my son did not play for him, was that too many players played every down and special teams as well which led to all the injuries his last year and the demise of the team that year. That team, if they stayed healthy, would have competed for a CIF title. Now he is going to a school that has 70-90 kids to pick from at any level, he will do good things at Damien. I think the booster club will be presently surprised with the man himself.

My Point:
Both Gano & Merrill left two existing football programs in dire straits. What they did in past may have been great but their current actions reflect what they have become. They have become two selfish
Individuals looking for glory they lost in the past. Gano & Merill saw their legacy slipping away at Los Altos & Wilson. Instead of trying to revive these two programs they chose to pick the easy way out. They also committed to everyone around them to revive these programs. They will attempt to make Damien into this new local powerhouse by taking from existing programs around them. These coaches have lost there connection with today's youth, this is why they left failing programs in place. The pressure is on for Gano & Merrill the must have a winning season. Look at Bishop Amat with in the first year that coach turned the program around. Gano & Merrill will make the excuse they need to recruit better. I would argue that great coaches take any individual no matter the size or speed and create one great team.

To Heights Parent: Who is the coach you are referring to??? I don't think you really know what you are talking about. There are no Experienced coaches who would want the Wilson job. There aren't any athletes left, and any there are going to Amat, Walnut, Rowland, LA, or South Hills.

Get a clue what you are talking about. LA didn't lose a great coach. The only sport he was coaching was girl’s softball. As you can see by their comments he wasn't do a very good job of that either. All the negative comments are not on him leaving, but why and how he is leaving.

Coach’s girl’s software for one year and the only accomplishment he got out of it was his freshmen daughter signs a letter of intent to go to Washington Univ. Gano used LA for his personal gain. Once he sucked us dry he moved on......

IT'S SIMPLE, I would correct one comment. Damien has the potential to be a powerhouse any coach can see that. Building find young men is part of football. Young men who are directed toward one common goal create great teams and can change the world.

BA you have great history and will continue to improve with good talent and strong coaching however until you win at least a league title keep it to small roar. As far as I see the drought has not ended yet (or you would have yet another ring)

Damien great hire and a strong move in the right direction but you are not and never will be a football power. Stick to what you do best field competitive football team while building fine young men who move on to successful in life (not football).

Both Gano & Merrill left two existing football programs in dire straits. What they did in past may have been great but their current actions reflect what they have become. They have become two selfish
Individuals looking for glory they lost in the past. Gano & Merill saw their legacy slipping away at Los Altos & Wilson. Instead of trying revive these two programs they chose to pick the easy way out. They also committed to everyone around them to revive these programs. They will attempt to make Damien into this new local powerhouse by taking from existing programs around them. These coaches have lost there connection with today's youth, this is why they left failing programs in place. The pressure is on for Gano & Merrill the must have a winning season. Look at Bishop Amat with in the first year that coach turned the program around. Gano & Merrill will make the excuse they need to recruit better. I would argue that great coaches take any individual no matter the size or speed and create one great team.

I have know Greg Gano since he quarterbacked at West Covina H.S. I have known Merrill since he quarterbacked at Los Altos H.S., Mt. Sac and Long Beach State. I have known Fair since he played in the Rose Bowl for Stanford. I have known Howing since he coached Jr. All American with his father Jack. These men are MORE than coaches. They have contributed to our communities by helping young men be successful at their chosen professions. I challenge all you bloggers to put a positive spin on how Damien's football program will only get better with the addition of Gano and his staff.

Where are all the minority Coaches. This isn't Auburn!

I'm not saying Gano isn't a good choice but there are other programs that have had HC's at school in this Valley that have had some RACE problems. LP 2 years ago, Wilson HH, Mills Pasadnea. Now those are 2 run down programs, but when was the last time a minority (African-American) had a chance to be at a better program in this Valley?

Working at the JC level is by far to profitable for Tom Caines to leave. You have to enter in the teaching along with the football, as well, and most importantly, the retirement. Tom turned down the Damien job the last time it was open, hence Morrison gets the gig.

This is crazy to even compare the two staffs. They aren't even in the same league. Gano's staff consists of a bunch of has beens that are going to do it their way because that is the only way they know how to do it. Don't forget Gano and staff are coaching at the D5 level.

We will all see when they match up next year (Bishop Amat vs. Damien). This should be real interesting being all the crap Gano has talked about the Bishop Amat staff over at LA, that is if they play the game. Gano has told a few of his friends that he is going to try and back out of the contract. I heard that comment from two different coaches.

Gano is doing a great job bringing along a couple of his oldtimers and getting Garrison and Merrill, who won a CIF title. Of course Merrill inherited a 14-0 CIF Championship team from Tom Caines (a former Amat assistant who went to Wilson) I actually was REALLY surprised that Caines wasn't mentioned publicly during the DHS search, being a Damien graduate and great player from his days with the Spartans. Presently he's at Cerritos and the JC gig may just be too cushy to leave. But still.

Earlier I listed the "playmakers" on the Amat staff that were mentioned.

Which Staff is Better ?

As fer as which Staff is better I am sure in a 7 on 7 Game today AMAT would whip on the Damien staff by 100pts in there prime 200pts.As far as Coaching?I am not quite sure but if you add up all the years of experience Gano and his coaches have it would be astonishing.Does that mean guaranteed success we will see. Good football players necessarily don't mean great coaches either.Sometimes its just quite the opposite.Not saying that AMAT coaches aren't good.Just that there is no substitute for experience.Gano's staff is loaded with that exact thing.I know Amat has plenty of Play-makers on there staff but how many Play-callers are there?As far as first year goes Amat had a wonderful year and if anything they have set the bar again as far as prep school swagger.Props to the Staff and kids for responding.But it was still At Large berth and 1st rd.loss .So to answer your question I would say Damien has a better staff on paper we'll see if it translates to Wins.With that said I leave you with this....

I guess that softball gig at LA was merely a promotional tool for Ganos kid , after he got rid of Farnworth, an Olympian no less, so he could coach his daughter, who has played for several travel ball teams, and then to leave them so close to the start of the season, nice commitment! Looks like the softball team really wants a piece of his hide, I don't blame them. So, far all the talk about what a great coach and all that goes with it, this is part of the man too, a quitter!

While coaching JV at South El Monte in 1996 we played @ Monrovia.I only was able to suit up 15 & WE WON !Monrovia was HUGE. After the game Coach Garrison came over to me & the other coach and said "HELL OF A JOB GUYS" ! Here was this Coaching "LEGEND " shaking our hands ...A CLASS ACT ! Best of luck to him & the rest of the new staff @ Damien !

As the Seniors were looking forward to there last year here you could have been upfront and made sure these girls were taken care of! There fund raiser onto a good start, there helping Adopt A Family for this year Christmas, especially in these hard times! No set team as of yet, no heads up no Christmas Gathering for the Team, come on Gano where was your commitment to these girls?? Is this why you didnt have us scrimmage against any other team like alot of the San Gabriel Valley has already been doing?

Los Altos will have a better year next year, not much better. The following year are the ones I am worried about. I am very aware of the talent at LA and the incoming talent over the next year or two and it doesn't look good. Depending on what develops over at Wilson LA could be taking a big hit for the next four five years.

The next releaguing cycle is 2010, First schools are put in "areas" and most of the private schools are in the "Parochial Area" when they releague they shuffle all those schools to balance and create the leagues. The public schools in our area are in the "Mt San Antonio Area".

For years Damien has remained in the "Mt San Antonio Area" and been leagued with the public schools. In order for DHS to join a private school league they would have to be moved and the last time CIF tried to put them into the "Parochial Area" a lawsuit was threatened (I believe from a Water Polo parent) claiming excessive travel would hurt the academic success of the student. CIF buckled and left them in the "Mt San Antonio Area".

When they releague and determine "playoff groupings" they consider Enrollment, determined by
Total number of students in leagues divided by number of schools (average) using the current CBEDS
count.
and Competitive Equity. Competitive Equity was calculated using the following: Adding the total number of league playoff wins during the previous playoff groupings cycle and awarding one point for each playoff win, (excluding wild card wins and byes).

That is what, ultimately, moves leagues up or down.

A couple things to think about and consider.

When Amat was booted by the OC , they were placed in the Del Rey in all other sports and, because our success did not add into the Del Rey numbers - the league remained in D5 for baseball. Now our success factors into the league totals and we'll move up. It's a cycle that needs to take time to balance.

In the OC, there is a tremendous amount of public/private animosity because for a short time Mater Dei, Servite, and Santa Margarita were in public school leagues and we were in the Del Rey league for football. During that time, obviously, they dominated and were booted.. Now, with the addition of JSerra and OLu they have a nice 6 team league AND have managed to stay in the "Orange County Area". That essentially keeps them from EVER being releagued because no other OC league will accept ANY of them. On the other end of the map, Oaks Christian and St Bonnies are also not presently in the Parochial area - because of their geographic isolation. So THEY would have to move to join a private school league. When someone moves OUT, remember someone needs to replace them and leagues try to protect playoff spots. A 5 team league gets the same 3 spots as a 6 team league, but if you go down to 4... you only get 2 automatic bids.
It's not an easy job for CIF to do, but the bottom line is Damien *should* join schools like themselves - even if they've been content to not upset the apple cart in eth Sieraa League and seem satisfied with status quo.

Interesting turn of events going on here. Gano Recruiting Inc. will be very successful at Damien since he can now openly recruit players instead of covering up as he did at Los Altos.

Damien will be a football powerhouse within the next 2-3 years and will be a formidable foe to contend with. Games against Amat will pack the house and fun to watch again. SH and CO will lose transfers to Damien as someone has already mentioned. Amat will have to work harder to compete for future transfers with Damien due to Gano's history but will not be hurt overall. Los Altos will field average teams, especially now that talk of Ganos' return to LA is now a dead issue. Unfortunately, Wilson will continue to sink deeper in the toilet.

CIF meets with its committee members and hashs out re-leagueing that would affect the 2010-2011 season. Next year the leagues stay the same. Its all in the CIF website. They are set till '10.

Damien Kids, Congrats to you all, You just got one of the best coaches in the Valley to come to the rescue. I am huge Gano fan with nothing but respect for him. I would go to battle with him anyday!

I'm not sure what was "wrong" about that statement. First, if you've been here, I've supported Andy from the start-and I'd love to continue.

But keep in mind - Amat has gone "back-to-back" TWICE before Andy... so he is simply keeping up that tradition - not starting it. Once was done in old white flannels back around "whitey's" days and another pretty recently.

Second, I think what I said was Amat clearly has an edge over Damien in baseball, which bodes well for Rio satying ... but go and ask Rudy (off the record of course!:?) and I'll betcha a nickel Gano has called him already.

Rio came to Amat for one reason- to play baseball for Nieto. The kid got the winning hit in both the semi's and the final against San Dimas this past weekend.

Damien Dads ...have some balls for once and give your sons the benefit of true competition. No wonder you attack anyone who pointed out the shortcomings of the previous coaching regime. And as everyone saw and read this year there were many. From players quitting to parents fighting on the blog and in the stands, Damien was a dysfunctional mess. A change was overdue. Damien just took a page out of Amats book and went the correct route in Hiring a proven winner like Gano. Question is, at his age does he still have the desire and youth to do this job. He is no spring Chicken and he could just be a big name hire that is past his prime as far as coaching. Has the game passed him by? Time will tell. Talent level of kids does bring wins with coaches that have experience. Is the talent there at Damien? If Ganos is as good a recruiter as they say he is and he starts getting kids to come over From Bonita, San Dimas, Covina,SH, West Covina, Azusa and even Amat, not to mention HH kids whos parents like him then he could built a powerhouse team. If he relys on just kids that go there he will not win. Talent level there at Damien is bare. I could see the Rios dad of Amat moving his kid if Amat does not give him the starting job. Gary Walker was the foundation for Amat, he was the first great player and if true that he past away, I'd love to see the new field at Kiefer Stadium be named Walker/Arehart Field in their honor, both of those guys were so classy, just great guys, you ask anybody who was there in the 60's and they'll confirm it or better yet, go talk to Big Phil, he'll tell you the same and more!

This is great for Coach Garrison and for Damien. Funny that both Coach G's or the ESGV and WSGV retired late last spring and both find their way back into coaching onto the same team.

This will be a complete change of environment for both coaches. I know they are up for the challenge. Good luck.

Welcome to real life boys. In the big-boy world we have to compete with other people for our jobs, our women, our respect, etc. God forbid we make these kids feel what it's like to have someone come in and push them for what they "deserve".

I'll make sure I tell my boss that I "deserve" my job when the new guy comes in. I'll tell him it's "unfair" that I got the boot and the new guy got promoted.

If you don't like what's happening then send your kid to Wilson. He'll get plenty of playing time over there.

You guys are bringing back old memories of some great days.I remember when we used to play Damien way back and it looked looked like ND vs GB Packers due our gold domes and Damien's D replica of the G on the GB helmet.Everytime I see the Rudy movie when it shows them painting the gold helmets I think those great old helmets days In my senior year Mr.Loboski sprung for alot of new equipment and one part were those funky gold/yellow hemets with AMAT decal on them . Still remember going to Anahiem stadium for the all Catholic school shoot outs on Thursday nights with late start the next day or better no school at all.It would be great to see us in those old Blue and Gold type of unifornm for old time sakes. Those were the days when the foundation was being built and it was exciting to be there to take it all in. As for as the name for that new stadium it should stay Kiefer Stadium afterall he is the Father of AMAT .Here's hoping that with Gano at Damien they step up and join the Serra as the 5th team. Congratulations Damien on a smart hire.

For crying out loud...it's just a freaking game. If I thought anyone on here cared a lick about the NON-football education of our youth, I'd continue to give you the time of day. As an interested bystander, I was curious what people had to say about the hiring, and not only have I seen plenty of misinformation, but plenty of ill-will, especially on the part of certain love-to-hate Damien so-called supporters...athletic, maybe.

Whoever said it earlier is right: because of parents that are so involved in this nonsense - I won't call it concern - it is damn near impossible for any coach to do his job, in any sport. Give the guy a break. Right or wrong, the last coach was fired because he didn't post enough Ws for just about everyone involved, and if that is the result of aggressive scheduling, then he had his own hand in it, especially if he predicted his talent, or his coaching, to be up to the challenge.

Anyone, yourselves included, deserves a chance to do his job without interference from those who would probably yell at the volunteer AYSO refs.

To borrow an analogy, the election is over, and one side lost. Deal with it for the next four years. It's just a freaking game.

Hey, we went away from the gold helmets in the'70s and to all-blue at home in the '80s when their was still tradition. Nothing worse than the mismatched "Pop Warner" uniforms Verti ordered. Maybe we should have a "throw-back" night! Whaddya think? We could even get the players/coaches to wear the ugly old gold championship jackets that are a sense of pride - inspite of how ugly they were.

fat head and joe amat and all others thinking Damien is now a top dog! the vibe,karma or whatever you want to call it , is not the same at the other Cathiloc schools, I've coached at Servite and St. John Bosco and those 2 all-boys(same as Damien)have a vastly different feel on campus, this emanates from the head administrator on down to the old as dirt, ineffective AD,to the kids themselves,they've been .in a public school league for nearly 30 years as I recall and how taken on the same traits of Glendora,Chino and others......... I speak from first hand experience, I had 2 boys that went to Damien, so over a period of 6 years, I saw it up close and personal and there is no comparison, Ed Croson HC at Birmingham(6 city titles in 10 years) resigned to go back to Chaminade, I bring this up, because in the first sentence , he states"I'm a Cathiloc school guy" is Gano? we'll ..but don't expect that Principal to go crazy and open up to whatever Gano wants, it ain't gonna happen, if they rock the boat(Sierra League) which is a cakewalk compared to the Trinity or Serra League, they'll have to play the "big boys" and that school only wants to be good in the Pool, the golf course or on the "pitch".look at how feeble they've been in baseball with talented rosters too (Moscos 5th pick overall in '07 and Liebel 3rd round in 08, 2 pitchers )basketball? same thing....I'll believe it(football is important philosophy) when I see it...

Gano is the man. He's a players coach and the parents that hate him are the ones that had sons that didn't step on the field. Say whatever you want, 4 Rings! I don't want excuses or reasons why, can we say 4 Rings together now...4 RINGS!!! Christmas came a couple weeks early for Damien. They hired a guy that can sell a lemon and make you think it's a rolls royce because that's how he makes players feel. They had no business that year playing with Orange Lutheran and they got all up in their sh*t and won. Hail to Gano, a true rivalry was born today for Amat and Damien. I can't wait. Congrats to Gano!!!

A couple former Lancers played PONY for Gano over at Orangewood Park, and they swear by the guy. Still has a National Championship plaque/monument with his and the teams name on it - yes?

I always thought he was kind of a "private school" guy, if there is such a thing. This is definitely an upgrade for the Spartans and could make for some interesting football decisions for some players in the East-East SGV. We have the edge for now, and the rest could be decided every year on the field. I hope we all decide to maintain the matchup ... it should happen every year (we SHOULD be in the same league... but that's a whole different discussion).

I played for Gano in little league and in pony ball, he is a great coach and a very likable man. To this day my parents think of him as a son, give him some credit for taking on this huge task. All of you out there would like him if you met him.

Damien has a noble program that is known for scheduling up often. However, Damien has never been known as a football powerhouse. You disgruntled Spartan fans are behaving like you've just lost next year's CIF Championship because Gano just got hired! lol! I would sort of understand your feelings if you were coming off a good 5 year run, but Damien has problems winning the Sierra League most years. So what's the big deal?

Damien was 3-7 this year. I believe that hiring Gano can only help. I could be wrong of course, but not likely. I remember when Bishop Amat would have been more than happy to have Gano as head coach. I was one fan that supported this idea! lol!

As far as you disgruntled Los Altos fans, I understand your disappointment and feelings of abandonment...especially after this past year. But keep your chins up. Los Altos is never far from a resurgence. Perhaps with Gano gone, we may finally be able to soon witness a LA vs. BA game!

Feeling a little froggy, kind of like rags to riches huh' be carefull what you wish for' I can remember things a little different not so long ago. Amat needs to duplicate this past season finish better in league before you start huffing and puffing getting knocked out in the first round ok baby steps my man.

Interesting hire for the Spartans. I for one would have liked to have seen Monger at Damien but it seems Carrol was against it.
I was not really impressed with Gano when he was at Northview but he did have success at LA. The main questions here are how long does he have to be successful? I have stated before it takes anywhere from 2-5 years to rebuild a program. Are the Damien supporters going to be patient enough and get behind Gano? That remains to be seen. Also it will be interesting to see what kids transfer to Damien and who can Gano recruit to the school. This hire may get more quality kids to the school
You LA people whining about Gano leaving need to put a cork in it. You people are startng to sound like the Wilson people. Maybe there is something in the water over there in Hacienda Heights.

All you haters out there if another company comes calling in your chosen carrer and offers you a position you want would you take it? Of course you would. Anyone who wants to further their career or wants a challenge would take the Spartan job. Damien is one of top jobs in the valley and who can blame Gano for going for it. I for one hope he succeeds so we can have some good blogging smack between Damien and Amat bloggers. Also should be interesting which assistant's come on board.

Now I'm really looking forward to the Damien game next year against Amat.

Amat will come out more emotionally charged against Damien because of the profound sigificance that Gano has dodged Amat for so long at LA. What goes around finally comes around. He will be forced to compete against the big boys of D1 by popular demand, boosters and parents.

This is Damien, a whole different Catholic culture and competition.... they don't play dodgeball like CO and LA.

That is how it works, Damien posted a coaching job and people responde. This is not Marshall, you don't just start calling people(maybe highly regarded alumni)

The one thing I will say about Gano is he is loyal, loyal to himself. He proved that not by taking the Damien job. But by how he got the job. He used this blog and Fred to advertise to all that he wanted the Damien job. Damien administration didn't come to him asking, he went to them looking and that is a real big difference. That in its self shows Gano's true colors.

Those of you at Damien beware; if it gets tuff Gano isn't going to stick around. He proved that over here at LA.

I don’t understand a year ago Gano was stepping down so he could coach his daughter for the next four years. He told all he would think about returning after she graduates. Then one year latter Gano takes the Damien job, and is sending his daughter to South Hills. I guess from his perspective everything worked out just great. He coached his daughter for one year, padded her stats got her a scholarship and now he is done with LA. He squeezed all he could out of us and now he is moving on to Damien.

I just got a message that Gano gave his two weeks at LA and will be gone two weeks after the break. You can see where his priorities are, he up and left the softball team high and dry. What is real interesting is his daughter is staying at LA so far. I believe he is just waiting to get the hardship approved by CIF so his daughter can play this year at South Hills.

Those who say Gano's never won at this level don't know what their talking about. BTW, the Sierra is no step up in class, San Antonio teams beat two of their top three this year. Some of Gano's LA teams were better than Bishop Amat's, and he's beaten Orange Lutheran. When's the last time Damien competed for titles, 20 years ago. Get with it, it's not like he's moving to the Pac-5, he's going to a private school that he can turn into a power. what does damien want or think it deserves. they couldn't do better than this

Most of the teams Damien will be competing against are talented D1 teams. In the past he was competing against D6/D7 teams. The talent year in and year out at LA compensated for his lack of coaching. At Damien you are dealing with educated parents that are going to get involved and realize that their kids are being taught old school basic football. I just don’t know how long it is going to last. Fred has pumped Gano up to be some football God, well Damien parents you have a real big surprise coming to you.

Why are we wishing this guy good luck? He was tired of coaching and wanted to see his daughter play softball. Now he has gone back on his word and coaching at Damien. Listen this is not a fall sport. He has to be committed year around. No missing practices.

I would seriously caution you about coming on the boards and making deroigatory comments about people like you did. Especially when you do not have the nuts to do so publicly but under a psuedonym. Who are you? We are all dying to know.

A lot of people think his biggest challenge will be dealing with the parents and various a-holes bloggers (i.e. EVV, Fathead, etc.) when in fact, the biggest challenge will be dealing with a severe lack of talent at DHS.

Thank goodness a lot of the senior class dead weight is gone (T. Herrera), but the fact of the matter is that the cupboards are bare in Spartan land.

The bottom line is Coach Gano is going to Damien. Hope he does a good job and enjoys the school. As for the parents, time to embrace your new coach because the school made the choice and its up to you to support the program.

For once, let the coach just do his job. Just because you pay for the education, doesn't give anyone the right to dicate or put down a guy who hasn't coached one down for Damien yet.

Please read the post. I was questioning transfers in their junior and senior years. Not freshmen or sophmores. There is a difference transfering public to private then there is from public to public. No knock on a public school education in anyway shape or form.

Boy oh boy. This man has not even started to coach the program and he is already catching all this heat. I had written on another thread on how in this day and age with all the blogging and so much parent involvement it is hard for a coach to succeed.If he fails to win right out of the gate he is in big trouble.One question for fat head since he seems to be very close to Gano is that since Gano did have some success at LA with a lot of transfers is Damien going to allow senior transfers coming in seeing as that was a big part of Gano's coaching style when he was at LA. Afterall there should be a premium on a Damien diploma for completing at least 3-4 or maybe 2 years of schooling under their curriculum unless he plans on continuing to raid AMAT for players for which I believe Damien would accept the transcripts as satisfactory for required enrollment in a junior or senior year. One great thing on this is now he cannot dodge AMAT anymore as the game is already calendared for next season unless he chooses to remove us from his schedule.

I'm not sure the CIF rule about "automatic influence" applies to ADs. Not that it matters in Gano's case; he's taking some current LA coaches with him, and it would apply to them.

I know most of the valley coaches and have worked with several programs. If you know me, you are from the good side! As far as coaching, Maybe! I will talk to Greg tonite, but the truth is, I am having to much fun enjoying my son's young career. Also don't think I need the B.S. from the parent base!

Remember the last time a private school went the cheap way out. We pay how much in tuition and can't afford a decent coach.
