Football: Championship notebook
Diamond Ranch has home field in Friday's championship, but coach Roddy Layton didn't make a fuss over the venues: "I have a lot of respect for Charter Oak and coach Lou Farrar. It wasn't a big deal. I always envisioned a championship game to be at a neutral site and in a big stadium like Mt. SAC. It would have been nice to play at Ganesha, but this is how you're supposed to do it. You're supposed to play at a neutral place, and it's a stadium we both love and agreed on. When the game starts, it won't matter anyway."
Did you know: Rosemead coach Matt Koffler played backup quarterback for USC behind Rob Johnson. Though he went 0-4 against crosstown rival UCLA, one of Koffler's major accomplishments as a Trojan was passing for the longest touchdown in USC football history, a 97-yard bomb to R. Jay Soward against Illinois in 1996. Layton also played with Koffler at USC.
Record setting: If Charter Oak wins on Friday, Chargers coach Lou Farrar will join Steve Bogan, Greg Gano, Terry Roche and the legend Dwayne DeSpain as the only Tribune area coaches with four or more championships on their resume
Championship coaches
(7) Dwayne DeSpain (Los Altos), 1972, 1973, 1976, 1977, 1982, 1986, 1988
(4) Steve Bogan (South Hills), 2000, 2002, 2003, 2005
(4) Greg Gano (Los Altos) 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003
(4) Terry Roche (Diamond Bar) 1998, 1999, 1995, 1984
(3) Wallace Newman (Covina), 1925, 1926, 1928
(3) Lou Farrar (Charter Oak) 2001, 1998, 1985.

There is plenty to read in today's sports section about this weekends football championships. Diamond Ranch's great defense was the focus of today's front page. They've allowed an average of just 6.6 points during their six game winning streak, and nearly shutout West Covina. In today's Southeast Division notebook, coach Roddy Layton talks about not making a fuss over going to Mt. SAC, and coach Lou Farrar talks about why playing a team twice in the same season isn't such a big deal. Star-Newbie Miguel Melendez is all over the Rosemead-Paraclete championship, providing a great Mid-Valley notebook for today's readers. Great quotes from Koffler, check it out.

Most, if not all the Freshman games were coached by Parker on the sidelines this year. So I believe that he is very much a part of the Freshman team.
Having said that however, I do not know if he is at all of the practices, all of the time, due to the fact that his day job is as a Los Angeles County Sheriff.
does anyone know if the Rosemead game will be telivsed
Thanks Joe, I was not able to get by the School at all this year. My son played for him in 01 & still has much respect for his ( I don't need anything back dedication).
Red,
Both !:?)
Frosh is a tough gig because, really, your job is not to win games but to do what's best for the program in developing players for the future. At times there is a conflict between what might helpyou win today - and what may pay off down the line.
Sometimes that means sticking with things that kids may not be great at now - so they learn it. Or sticking with players that we know will pan out - even though they may not be the best today. Sometimes that is lost on the spectators that want the coaches to "train for Friday".. instead of thinking about long-term development.
What some don't know is Rich also makes a nice donation every year to the school which means he, basically, ends up working for free.
and Fred, technically... he is a *Tribune area coach* and has *three championships on his resume* J/K
JA or 73.... What ever happened to coach Parker? He was with the freshman team for a good number of years. Is he still coaching or adding to his collection of Jeeps, LOL
Yes, Hagerty won three, but not three in the SGV.
Joe Amat,
agree 100% on Hags.
Now if he can get the Frosh team moving in the right direction.....
tcbruin.
Hagerty took over at Paraclete in 1992 after they hadn't won A GAME in 7 years and brought the school CIF Championships in 1997, 1998 and 1999. When Steve then moved to JW North High School Paraclete won one more to make it four straight. At Nort as Offensive Coordinator they achieved a CIF Title in 2001, and Steve became the Head Coach in 2002 when they lost to Centennial in a high scoring affair. Steve also coached at Riverside Poly High and Citrus Hill High, where he helped secure another CIF Title in 2007 as Offensive Coordinator before returning to Amat.
Hard to argue that if anyone can bring the Lancers all the way back - Hags can.
Fred, 2 things:
Didn't Steve Haggerty have 3 'ships at Paracelete?
In the 96 UCLA/Southern Cal game, Koffler threw the interception in the 3rd OT that ended the game.
Thanks, I stand corrected.
