I guess there isn't much interest in the state of Volleyball in the valley.
USA Volleyball had a great article about what constitutes a good middle blocker. They specified a good middle blocker takes the other teams key players out of the game. Callen from St. Lucy's did this against Ayala, Glendora, Diamond Bar and Riverside Poly. How she didn't get a nod in her own league is surprising. Miller (St. Lucy's-RS) was also ignored and that is unfortunate. Miller was instrumental in getting her team to CIF.
Last note: Certain players were given 1st and 2nd team nods for playing all round positions but if they were on a better team would not have played full rotations. Nor did they stack up against the competition.
There is a formula as to how many players each coach puts on the 1st and 2nd team. Why would you have 3 setters on 1st team and no Libro or defensive specialists. I for one know that at least three of these 1st team players for Miramonte don't play defense.
I wish each team would go as followed. 1 league MVP then 1-middle, 1-RS, 1-OH, 1- S, 1-Libro, and 2-DS. T The DS's could also be hitters because some of the top hitters do play all the way around. The top players at each position needs to be recognized.
This would be a true all leage team not something that the coaches came up with.
vball follower: I agree that coaches have agendas, but if the players picked it would be even more political.
FYI-I have not heard of leagues where the 1st place team gets 3, 2nd 3, 3rd 2? Usually the first place team gets more players to nominate, but that doesn't mean they will get first team. The coaches have to vote on all of the players nominated. I've seen a last place team get a player on first team when a third place team didn't. This is the political part of sports, which isn't why most of us are involved even though it's fun to be recognized.
Great job by all, the question I have in the Miramonte is how do you have 3 setters as 1st team. Medina-CO, Maxfield-B and De La Vara-LA. I get a kick every year when I see these coaches generated all league teams come out. There are always a few left out that deserve it because some coach has his agenda. The 1st place team has 3 players the 2nd place has 3 and the 3rd has 2 players to be named to the team. Coaches normally put their favorite or even their daughter as an all league selection when they are not in the top competitors on the team. I think the girls on the team should be the one who vote for their top players on the team. I guarantee some things would be different....
Congratulations MEAGAN MACIAS!!! You have so much talent and you play with heart. Keep working hard and follow your dreams.....
