Girls Volleyball: Gomez queen at the net

Player of the year: Melinda Gomez, South Hills

Notable: Gomez has shown in two years to be one of the area's most prolific forces at the net. She used her ability, which encompasses skill and vision, to rank among the leaders in the area of kills and blocks. That helped South Hills advance to the CIF-SS quarterfinals for the second consecutive season after scoring 196 kills and 79 blocks. She also had 21 aces, and earned first team All-San Antonio league honors.

DB selection applies, however Glendora does not fall into their service area. I do not believe it has ever been considered part if the IE.
USA Volleyball had a great article about what constitutes a good middle blocker. They specified a good middle blocker takes the other teams key players out of the game. Callen from St. Lucy's did this against Ayala, Glendora, Diamond Bar and Riverside Poly. How she didn't get a nod in her own league is surprising. Miller (St. Lucy's-RS) was also ignored and that is unfortunate. Miller was instrumental in getting her team to CIF.
Last note: Certain players were given 1st and 2nd team nods for playing all round positions but if they were on a better team would not have played full rotations. Nor did they stack up against the competition.
Although I am usually on here as a football blogger, I also have coached Woman's volleyball.
From what I saw this year (I attended 4 matches at SH) Jennifer Silva of Walnut has the most potential for the next level. She is still growing and getting coordinated, but overall has amazing physical skills, a powerful vertical leap and just seemed to understand the games I saw her playing in.
Right now, Gomez is better than her, but in 2 years I would take Silva over anyone on this all-area team.
Some people just "have it" and I believe Silva has this intangible skill set...
Pretty sad if you have to buy your daughter a spot on the Inland Valley Teams. Let her make it on her own. I think she'll appreciate it more.
As far as the Daily Bulletin's All Inland Valley Team. Jamie Park from Diamond Bar, and Tara Prater and Christine Aguilera from St Lucy's were all voted on the team. And I sure none of a girl's parents paid to have them on the team. It was by their abilities on the court.
How does St Lucy's player get voted to be in Daily Bulletin All-area team...absolutely don't make sense...St.Lucy is in Glendora right? and their area code is 626 right? how is that Inland Valley? So, how much is Daily Bulletin charging for getting my kid on the all area first team?
how much does it cost to get my kid's name on this year all area team?
Max Prep is only as good as the teams that actually post stats. 2nd, stats can be very misleading. A player will have higher stats if they play more games. Aguilera had a good season, but Noriega from Glendora was a far better player. I can only assume the team's slide at the end of the season cost her the selection.
You slam Christine Aguilera because she was voted to the San Gabriel Tribune's 2nd team and your daugther didn't get selected. According to the paper she was voted to the Serra League's 1st team, and the Daily Bulletin voted to the Inland Valley's 1st team. Her abilities and performance have been posted weekly on Maxpreps. Check Maxpreps' Website and you will see that no one in the Inland Empire is ranked in any category: Nationally, State, or in the Southern Section as high as her.
So, she deserves the recognition she's receiving.
Talk about ineptness. St Lucy's is not in the *SERRA* league - Bishop Amat is. And they don't have a Christina Aguilera.
Talk about ineptness. Someone has their facts wrong. According to the San Gabriel Tribune, Christine Aguilera was voted to the Serra League's 1st team. Therefore, somebody is wrong. Here's another one for you to think about. The Daily Bulletin voted her to the All Inland Valley 1st Team.
Re: All area teams; It is true that a libero should be picked on the the all-area teams, it's ridiculous how many hitters actually make the team. Also where are all the setters/middle blockers? Another point, depending on how the head coach positions players can lead to decreased stats i.e. if a player is injured or not playing well and coach decides to move another player into the needed position. So this all area-team is not necessariy the "best" players in the area.
Yeah, I'd really like to see the all league lists too. You posted all the football all leagues, let's see the girls get some recognition.
how about posting the all leauge players for volleyball too. all the sgv. girls deserve the recogntion also since you havent posted them on the newspaper.
It would be great to see who made 1st Team All-League in the
Sierra League
Miramonte League
San Antonio League
and others.
Hard to argue that point.
Congrats to Melinda Gomez. Well deserved!
Nice job Tara! Also well deserved!
Once again it is clear that the people who select the tribune all valley volleyball selections are not qaulified to be intrusted with this responsibility. The first team was selected without a libero position . Every team uses a libero and although it's a relatively new position it is now worthy of a first team selection . Another glaring example of the ineptness of the selectors was the awarding the second team libero spot to the Saint Lucy's libero ,SHE WAS NOT EVEN SELECTED AS THE FIRST TEAM SIERRA LEAGUE LIBERO, ERIN NORIEGA FROM GLENDORA WAS THE SIERRA LEAGUE FIRST TEAM ALL LEAGUE SELECTION . BETTER LUCK NEXT YEAR GETTING IT RIGHT.
The all SGV team came from only 8 schools? Noone from Los Altos, Covina, West Covina, SanDimas, Gladstone, Bishop Amat, etc. Sure, the teams that had two or more players were probably the strongest, but other schools that made the playoffs, and maybe even some that didn't, should have had someone recognized.
Great choice for Coach of the Year! Congratulations to Coach K-I doubt anyone works harder in the area and his success this year is to be commended.
