Just Tribbin: A coaching change at St. Paul?
Anything and anyone you want to talk about ...

Breaking News from Whittier Prep Editor Roger Murray: It was confirmed late this morning that Pete Gonzales will be out as the St. Paul football coach as of Friday morning. At present, he is still the coach, but Friday he will react to the "resign or be terminated" ultimatum given him by principal Lori Barr. He has not indicated what his decision will be but it is well known that part of his program's philosophy is to "never quit, never give up." No specific reasons for Barr's decision to oust Gonzalez have been given, other than the usual wanting the program to take a different direction. Neither athletic director Marc Hernandez nor Gonzalez would discuss the situation further, and Barr was not available for comment. Gonzalez posted a 21-16 record in three years as head coach. His teams won the Western Division title in 2007 and reached the semifinals in 2006.

Chuck Willig-
I do not know coach Gonzalez and in no way does this comment reflect anything personal or professional or anything about him in any way or the current situation.
Just a thought on Chuck Willig as a coach.
I played for Chuck Willig @ St. Anthony High School in Long Beach and I must say that I owe a tremendous amount of my football knowledge from him and my head coach Dave Radford. The film sessions, play books, scouting reports and practices were all set up, ran, and explained in great detail just like a college program would do. Being at a small undersized catholic school, he always had a great game plan ready for us and made sure all the players knew it and believed in it. And most important, he always conveyed the look of complete confidence. And that's very reassuring as a player to see your coach exuding confidence. I can honestly say that I would not be the man I am outside of football today if Chuck Willig had not played some part in my development in life. I also would not have been able to take over a team in mid-season and lead them to the CIF Central Coast Large School Championship without the wealth of information (both football wise and life wise) gained during my time with Coach. I would be honered to coach under him, have him on my staff or assisting in the development of my child.
Thank you for understanding I am not running to the defense of anyone, condoning the actions of anyone, nor to criticize anyones performance.
I just wanted to say that about Coach Willig as I respect him very much.
And thank you in advance for not assulting me with negative comments. I post under my real name and would make any comment I make here to any person involved face to face as I was always taught by my coaches to BE ACCOUNTABLE for all your actions and comments in life. There's no reason to hide.
Good luck to all the student athletes who give your parents and coaches so much joy in life!
As far as Baseball: I'd rather have the "A" of Amat on my lettersman jacket then the "A" of Arroyo. Big Differance. I do not see the Ick putting a Championship patch on the back of his Arroyo lettersman jacket. With Amat he was looking at putting a possible back to back championship patch on that Jacket. Icky should have stayed his senior year. Well playing time is important and Amat, well they are a tough nut to crack. The best go there to play and some do not even make the freshman team from the start, thats when you transfer to another school for playing time. Transferring as a senior???, well, that is self centered and shows no loyalty to the teamates that put that first championship patch on your jacket. Geeze if you going to transfer, transfer to a better team and school then Arroyo. I mean I would play for Nogales before I play for Arroyo and for that matter So. Hills has a very good baseball program. $$$$ could have been a deciding factor as well for this QUESTIONABLE??? transfer.
Ikky is a great kid, and I for one wish nothing but the best for him and his family. The Torres family are great people and like has already been said, have done plenty for many kids in the SGV!
It's the parent's choice.... What's so hard to understand about that?
As someone who's been involved with TravelBall in the the SGV for a very long time, Johnny and the Torres family are wonderful people, they have assisted so many kids and their families over the years, Can't we just let them be and let their son enjoy his Senior year?
If Icky ends up going the JC route after High School, then so be it! So what?
Just hate to see quality people dragged through the mud in here...
Also, just an FYI... Amat is NOT for everyone! Some people find a better situation at other schools? So what?
Be nice people!!
You're right on Tony what most don't understand is the speed and conditioning that is needed to compete. Those who can not make the grade literally leave. And those who can not discipline themselves morally leave.
Icky fan,
you are right he was once one of the best "travel Ball" players. HS is different and had Icky Torres conditioned his body like a baseball player and put in the time there is no telling how great a player he could have become. To try to play baseball at a high level without the conditioning and hard work that goes into being a pitcher you will get bypassed as you now see as a example with Torres. Wish Icky the best at Arroyo but he is a travel ball legend not a HS legend. Kids he was better than during his travel days have now past him by and have become better ballplayers then Icky. It happens.
Never know,
Wells did not leave Amat he got into some trouble and was asked to leave based on the issue in which he was involved in. Had he not gotten into trouble he plays and stays at Amat....but then again you will never know because you dont know what you are talking about.
Icky is not a Dorian Wells in athletic ability. Also, Dorian was a very good student in the classroom. Icky's grades??? Knowing Dorian's parents and their love for Amat Dorian would have played there his senior year and still would have went on to college with a Athletic full ride out of Amat. Comes down to ability and in all honesty Amat may be at a higher level then this kids ability in the baseball realm of things.
What this kid will be playing with is a lower level of players to make him shine on the mound. Players from Arroyo are not that good. What will it say about this ex-amat kids abilities if he gets lit up on the mound at Arroyo. Even if he did not play that much I would rather have my kid on that Amat roster then a Arroyo roster any day of the week. Education, well if your smart you can achieve greatness anywhere you attend HS.
Education First. You are exactly right!
Look what happened to Dorian Wells. He left Bishop Amat for a PUBLIC EDUCATION and JUST TO PLAY SPORTS....and look what happened!
Oppppps...didn't he get a FULL RIDE to Villanova?
Life is strange my friend...very, very, very strange.
Prepare for the worst and HOPE for the BEST!
The facts ARE that a 4.0 GPA Will and CAN get you a FREE RIDE....maybe NOT in SPORTS but their are many ways to the pROMISED LAND.
I KNOW THIS TO BE TRUE!
$250,000 at one of the best Academic Instistutions in the Land. Never played more than 4 minutes straight in ANY high school basketball game in three and 1/2 years of busting his butt in practice and playing with a broken foot and a twisted mangled index finger on his shooting hand. Wore his clolors with pride and never once backed down from a challenge.
Started out as a 5'1" 132 lb pudgy kid with nothing more than hustle and a great shot. Ended up 5'8" 132 with a beautful stroke but never seemed to garner any love from his coaches only respect from his team mates.
Last night as we wore our Trojan colors and cheered another Latino in the HOUSE!!!! and on the RISE...We laughed about all the doubters and their certainity of greatness. We looked for fellow Spartans who BEAT THE ODDS on the sidelines.
Icky and his parents don't ever need to explain their actions. They obviously love their kid and are doing what they think is best for him.
No one knows what the future holds for anyone. The Jordan getting cut from his basketball team story is just one of many that prove my point.
Eickstien and the short Boston monster with the fat contract are more recent additions to the club of YES I CAN !!!!
Obama in the White House, Mark Sanchez in the Rose Bowl and my kid at USC.....hey life could not be better. New Year's Eve we said our good byes to anothe Spartan who now wears the BROWN badge and wished his mother and him well as they went back East to continue their dreams.
As we said our goodbyes his mother and me hugged and thanked God for our good fourtune...it wasn't easy but oh my Lord is it sweet!
Icky...NOTHING BUT THE BEST FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY!
Most are missing the point. Student Athlete. Student first. Icky will make all Tribune at Arroyo? Geeze if he could not crack the Amat line up what does that say about the Arroyo baseball program and the teams they play against? His passion for the game how about his passion for the classroom. His parents made the right decision because he loves playing baseball.??? After a 3 year $19,500 investment in a private school I would have told my kid sports second EDUCATION! first. The investment in paying for private school is not in how much baseball ICKY learned it is how much learning in the classroom you got out of that tuition payment. Vesting 3 years and $19,500 only to pull him his senior year is plain out stupid. If your not good enough your not good enough as far as athletics. Many superstar lil league, travel ball players face this dilema when they get to HS. You go to school to learn in the classroom, you do not go to school to play baseball. Pitching for Arroyo Varsity baseball team is not going to get you anywhere like the classroom can. Well dad you saved $6500 and your kid is a baseball star again. Sounds like his travel baseball glory days are back at the expense of his private school education. As a teacher and parent this was not a wise choice
I don't even know Icky but, I'm pulling for him too!
I wish Icky nothing but the best. The truth is he and his family made the best decision. There was a time when Icky was the best around, but that time is no longer. He is not better than Paez, Zuniga, Mcnitt, Fitz, or Grijalva. Don't put the blame on Nieto or Beck. Their job is to put the guy on the mound who gives them the best chance of winning that day. Icky will do well at Arroyo. He might even make all Tribune. He is not a good student so it looks like a JC for him, and there is nothing wrong with that. Leave the kid and his family alone. Icky is a great kid that doesn't have a bad bone in his body. His father has helped many players in the San Gabriel Valley throughout their young baseball careers. Good luck Icky, we're pulling for you.
What? the discussion was a Amat education vs public education, along with a scholarship right? As, far as athletics are concerned a 2.0 is all that is needed plus 16 core units period! People talk alll the time about my son is a 4.0 student but if he's average on the baseball field Mom & Dad expect to pay from your wallet:) grades will get you into a college but NOT a free education in sports!
Didn't Sermons from Diamond Ranch transfer out of Bishop Amat? And won't "he" be playing along side Price from Amat at UCLA?
Didn't seem to hurt his chances.
When a player leaves a school, especially one as sports-centric as Amat, one has to ask ..."why did he go to Amat in the first place?"
If it was to try and earn an athletic scholarship then riding the pine won't do. If it was to get the best "coaching" then he's benefitted from 3 years worth and got what he paid for. But if it was for the academics again he's had that foundation and will hopefully comtinue to get even better grades at Arroyo.
Good students are good students before they get to high school. Great students are great students all the way thru.
The three smartest kids in my son's school from little old St. Louis of France right behind Bassett High School and down the street from Biship Amat went to USC, UC Berkeley and Cal Poly Pomona. They were clearly the best and the brightest students from day one. The high schools they attended were Damien, St. Lucy's and Bishop Amat....in that order.
Hope that helps.
Hey guys all he needs is a 2.0 to get a scholorship with 16 core units for a D-1. Please understand a "free" ride is rare even at a D2, 0r D3 school....people think they fall out of the sky.I hear dads all the time talking about how there waiting for the colleges to give their boys a ride....Come on guys if he's riding the pine it's not looking good! so please understand a 4.0 doesnt matter in sports a 2.0 with 16 core units for a D-1 less for a D-2.
Robert M - I agree that a HIGH SCHOOL diploma from Amat may be viewed as a bit better than some other schools. However, do not kid yourself, most universities across the country will accept a student with a 4.0 at Arroyo over a 3.5 from Amat all day everyday (all else being equal). We may disagree but the reality is that it is too difficult to determine because every university operates differently.
I would have liked to see Icky finish at Amat too but the fact is that he loves playing baseball, so why should his parents deny him this liberty. Besides the risk and reward equation here is a no-brainer. If he goes to Arroyo and gets a scholarship from a D2 or even a D3 university, then he gets to play four more years and gets a free college education. Icky may not be a D1 prospect but if you know his strong passion for baseball and his competitive nature, and if you know anything about D2 and D3 ball then you will agree that he has a shot at playing in one of these collegiate divisions at the next level.
So please give him and his parents some consideration. Or at least don't say anything if you don't have anything positive to say. They're good people and they are doing what they believe is right for their son by accepting his wishes.
Just saw Urban, from Diamond Bar pitch on Tuesday, DAMN he can pitch.
They pitched him 5 innings, struck out 13, 2 ground outs, they put in a new pitcher for the 6,& 7, inning thinking they had the win....yea right we came back and beat them 8 to 9, the cocky coach's mouth was hanging wide open. Our team can hit! If, the cocky coach is reading this, don't do your victory dance to early dude! Urban, hats of to you dude, you have a bright future ahead of you.
I understand Icky Torres transferred because the little guy Napoleon Dynamite Nieto did not like the kid because all he brought to the table was pitching and Ick was not as talented as the pitchers Nieto thinks he has, plus Icky was overweight, had no stick, could not play other positions because of the weight, catcher maybe but Jerry Mac has that spot. Bottom line is. he was going to ride the pine again so his parents decided to pull him and get him some playing time at Arroyo HS. What happened to education? a Amat education as a four year student goes along way. Not bashing Arroyo but Ick was to become a senior this year and he should have graduated from Amat after putting 3 years in that school with learning. Baseball i guess comes first in his parents mind. what a loss of a student. forget baseball and playing minutes ride the pine but get the best out of your investment , he should have completed that 4th year of education at Amat.
This pissed off person must be a relative of Pete Gonzalez, or it's the coach himself, he seems to have to much information that has not been disclosed. It is well know that Pete Gonzalez does have a few incidents that have not made the students, alumni, and the parents too happy. I believe no one at St Paul will be sad to see him go. The boys on the football team don't respect him at all. If you ask any of them they will tell you that coach G Jimenez is the one who runs the team. As far as boys jumping ship thats also a bunch of b/s. The boys are dedicated to make another run at a CIF Championship next year. Must of the boys that are not playing other sports have already dedicated themselves to work towards that goal.
Is Banuelos expected to make an impact at Northview?
I don't know much about Chuck Willig or what he is like as a person, but I remember him playing for ST.Paul back when I was a
senior in highschool, I remember He had 12 or 13 interceptions in a single season that year.
It is with great sadness that we inform you of the death of alumnus of the Class of 1985, James Gustaveson. James passed away on December 21, 2008. It is our understanding that he suffered a heart attack. Here is a link to his obituary if you would like more information: http://www.southvalleyobits.com/classifieds/XcCPViewItem.asp?ID=280640
Those who remember Jim's selfless attitude at Amat also recall that he was noted for being the blocking fullback for Eric Bieniemy's sophomore year as running back for the Lancers as well as playing linebacker for Amat.
James leaves behind a wife and 3 young children, and his family is in a tough financial situation now. A fund has been set up for them by his sister.

SD,
Yeah, in both games SD did hit Peaz pretty good, but as was stated before the Amat pitchers are not allowed to throw breaking pitches in Fall/Winter ball and Amat still won the championship game. I for one did not understand why Ponzo threw for 7 innings, he threw a whole lot of pitches and many of those were breaking pitches in that championship game.
how the heck did baseball hijack a $1,000,000.00 backdoor dral?
Maybe it is a sign of the times that no one thinks it's a vile thing to do abd at the same time it's a tremendous leap of faith or personal hate for Pete.
How aren't more details not known?
The Amat pitchers not throwing any breaking pitches would explain Paez not looking as sharp. I have a feeling we will meet in CIF.
Arnold is back on the team at Northview. He was kicked off before last season by Murphy. I think he patched things up with Murph and the past is behind him now.
Northview Supporters:
Does anyone know a baseball player named Arnold Banuelos and if he's still at Northview?
If there are basball games being played right now, then why are they not listed in some sort of schedule ?
I would very much like to go see a few of these games myself.
Anyone have an updated schedule ?
SDfan. I think it would be a great game to see Ponzo vs Paez/Zuniga during the regular season. The game would go quick as the pitchers would control the game.
I would have to agree that Amat's defense on the infield will be a work in progress. Thier bats will be a question mark too. They might be a year away with all the young guys.
Did you notice that the Amat pitchers did not throw any breaking pitches when you played San Dimas? How did Ponzo feel after he threw over 130 pitches in the championship game the winter league against Amat. That is a lot a pitches for a winter game.
Pissed off,
I don't know where you went to school but Pete Gonzalez is a sorry excuse for a football coach. He talks SP/Swordsmen tradition and he has NO clue about SP/Swordsmen tradition. Remember paying for and supporting transfers from fundraisers at his bar seem a little unethical don't you think? Believe it or not the majority of the football team and their parents are happy to see Pete leave and only hope that Gil Jimenez will stay the players love and respect him.
Let me give my unbiased opinion. We played Amat twice during winter ball. The first time we tied 4-4. We scored all of our runs off of Paez. He threw 3 innings and I believe Zuniga and Mcnitt threw 3 innings each as well. The next time we played was for the championship. We scored 2 runs off of Paez in 4 innings. Mcnitt held us scoreless for 2 innings. Another pitcher who I have no idea what his name is (tall kid with thick legs) threw the last 2 innings. Rio Ruiz left us on the field in the bottom of the 8th as we lost 3-2. I was not that impressed with Paez the two times we faced him but there is no disputing that he might be the best based on last year's performance. Ponzo and Leyland hit shots off of Paez. Both times we played I felt our pitcher Ponzo was the best pitcher on the field. Rio Ruiz is definitely as good as advertised. He does not look or play like a freshman. He played 1st base against us but I understand he plays 3rd base for Team USA. Zuniga hit the ball well both times we played but I'm not sure if he even bats for Amat during the regular season. Him and Leyland look prety intimidating when they are up at bat. Amat's infield looks shaky as they made errors both times we played them. Their left side cannot even compare to Mistone and Reyes. I did not see Bergara either time we played. Amat did play little ball even during the Winter season. I have never seen a team bunt so much or as well as they do. Like him or not Nieto does teach his kids the lost art of bunting. In the two games we played I must have counted at least 8 bunts, 2 with even 2 strikes. I feel good about our chances if we play them in CIF especially if Ponzo is on the mound for us.
Two varsity and six JV girl soccer teams from the East Valley played in the minster North Orange County Classic Tournament. Los Altos beat South Pasadena 3-0 and Cabrillo 1-0, before losing to Sunny Hills 1-0 in their group semi finals. Did not get Bonita's results or those of the Rowland, Walnut, Arcadia, Glendora or St. Lucy JV teams.
I know it has become confusing, but the kids name is Rio Ruiz... not Rios. Oft made mistake, no worries, but at least now we should know who we are talking about.
Rio will come along just fine, but remember he IS a freshman and will get more and more innings as time goes on.
And for those worried about offense, remember Nieto likes to "overcoach" a bit (IMO) and play "little ball' (pun intended). In all fairness, his teams always do that very well. We'll be able to manufacture some runs and, hopefully, the pitching and defense will put us in a good position that it will be enough.
What about Rios ?
Did'nt he come to Amat in teh first place for baseball?
Get your facts straight fresh off the press
Northview's Arrelanes leading canidate for Wilson High School Head Coaching job.
I know Northview has the core of it's players back but who do they have for pitching? They lost the heart of their team last year with Williams, Elias and Andrade. Keep hearing how strong they will be again but who is pitching?
Amat Baseball - Zuniga will be OK if he is spot pitched against the right teams, Mc Nitt(?) seems to have lost some steam on his fastball but if he can get ground balls, great. Fitz, unproven at best let's hope his consistency is better. Grajalva may be a pleasant surprise BUT again showed signs of inconsistency when given a chance and still unproven. Would love to see another league title, let alone a CIF three peat, BUT...Looks pretty doubtful. Prove me wrong boys.
Lance,
Not too sure what Amat baseball team you speak of, but if you think that Paez is the only pitcher worth a mention, well lets just say you are going to be either pleasantly, or maybe not so pleasantly suprised at how good this pitching staff truly is.
Terry,
Ikky Torres unfortunately transfered to Arroyo.
Icky has transferred to Arroyo. He just couldn't crack the rotation at Amat.
Lance- Amat does have pitching. Fitz has looked great this off season and McNitt continues to get groundball outs. Zuniga should be his steady self. He really got going in the playoffs. The wildcard of the bunch should be Grijalva who at times looks very good.
Jake Urban goes to DBHS, not Ayala. And did anyone else catch a glimpse at the 25 point a$$ kicking DR took against Mater Dei. Way to show everybody how tough ya'll are again!
When does the Glendora Baseball tournament take place. dates??? Amat / C.O. is a game of intrest for me. Amat/Northview also a classic game. Pitchers were mentioned on the Amat side. What happened to Icky Torres in that line up of pitchers?
Hay Fred,
I just found out Bishop Amat's upcoming baseball schedule. Say what you want about them playing Division IV in the Del Rey League, but I challenge anyone around to match their schedule. They play:
Alta Loma
Diamond Ranch
Charter Oak
Chatsworth
Long Beach Wilson
Lakewood
Long Beach Millikan
Orange Lutheran
Santa Margarita
Servite
Cypress
Can you post any other local teams schedules.
Amat is also in the same league as St. Paul, the team they played in the CIF Finals last year.
St. Paul's lineup was sophomore laden last year and those guys are back, bigger, faster and stronger. Will this be the year of the Swordsmen in Del Rey baseball?
Wow. The Willigs huh? They are SP guys and true ass kickers it will be a different atmosphere with an all Amat staff at Amat and an all SP staff at SP. The epic wars will be back, I am a bit dissappointed as we will now have to really work to get kids out of the Whittier area. Does that mean we have to actually prepare to beat SP now, damn, we have to take that for sure W off the board now.
Amat baseball - Three peat? Not a chance. The only real pitcher on that squad is Paez. As far as offensive power...NONE. Nieto will have to pull a rabbit out of the hat this year. He will definately have to dig deep into his coaching bag of tricks just to win league! Real test this year Lancers.
"HOW".... nicely done!:?)
Boy, Damien does have a pipeline to Chapman/La Verne. Not only Woodland and Ramme - but also Riley at Chapman and Napolitano and Mancilla at La Verne. Who's next from the Spartans to realize that's a fun level to play at? More of our SGV football players need to take advantage of those opportunities to extend their careers.
DTC would have been a GREAT player at that level.. who knows? Maybe he'll be back.
Pitching?
When it comes to pitching I don't think any teams in the SGV have as much as Amat which returns Paez, Zuniga, Fitz, Grijalva, Mcnitt, & Cuevas (Injured last season)all quality pitching, now on the offensive side I don't see the fire power of the past two season after losing Reyes, Fox, & Mistone, but with all the pitching Amat should be able to win most games by scoring 1 to 3 runs per game. It is going to be very fun to watch, can't wait 'til the Glendora tournament begins.
Joe Amat , not sure "HOW" (no pun intended) you get your info but that was out of this world!
I thought maybe he's end up a La Verne or Chapman University seeing as Griffoin and Woodland made it there respectively , but alas it was not meant to be.
What a stunner. One giy was 6'11" 300 lbs and looked like a bouncer at a biker bar or a football player or a lifer. Guy looks like he's 30 at least!
Well he feel a long way from his Freshmen 3 pt shooting days. .."WOW" !
sgvbasketballfan ,
A while back a friend of mine that lives in Lawrence, Kansas sent me an email because he saw Tiger-Cortes' name on a roster at "Haskell Indian Nations University" and it says he's from Los Angeles This guy thinks that anything in SoCal is LA!
He doesn't think the school gives scholarships, but he sent me the school website and apparently Haskell is an NAIA school for federally recognized American Indians that has no tuition as it is subsidized by the government as part of a treaty. Probably that Mahatten deal. I'm sure that DTC received financial aid to cover his room and board.
He is playing behind a guy named Solomon Horse-Chief. No lie. They also have Terrance Little Thunder, Benjamin Carry Water, and Clint Not Afraid. I am not making that up.
After seeing him his phenomenal senior year I can't believe something different (better?) never presented itself. An injustice Billy Jack needs to look into.
"....one tin soldier rides away"
sorry... look it up !:?)
I agree - take off the picture of the sniveling Covina coach and really do I want to hear his excuses again about WHY they lost to Northview. NOT worthy of a highlight list.... Maybe Hall Of Shame.
If he decides to leave, then coach Pearson at Cathedral will be an excellent choice. But will St.Paul pay? Just curious What do other Catholic coaches make? Chaminade pays their coach over a hundred grand.
What are you thinking? To mention minors names on a blog, really is this what these kids need. To a certian t.e's family and friends yes HE is a great QB but asspects of another persons game are more usseful. One must appreciate the hart of a bright young man who is willing to do what EVER it takes to help his team. Plus he is a better baseball player.
I must admit, the Bishop Amat comeback over Orange Lutheran, and the remarkable season the Azusa football team had should have been on this list. You called me and you're right, I rushed through it a little too quickly.
Chris is a Tight End at St. Paul. Should have transferred to Damien last year and would have started over Danny Pertusati. No slight to Danny but he was a better safety and could have payed wr with Herrera.
Chris Willson, personal message from a concerned folk:
get the hell outta St Paul and go back to that school on Cameron & Barranca!
Coach Gonzalez ... COME TO PASADENA HIGH SCHOOL. YOULL TURN THIS PROGRAM AROUND OVERNIGHT
Pissed off,
I guess the harrasment case against Gonzalez that is pending had nothing to do with it? She is really intimidated by the studdering midget. That dude is a cancer and I hope he doesnt land at any of our schools out here. That dude tried to recruit my nephew and he tried to hit on my sister dude is got serious issues.
I think Jake Urban goes to Ayala.
Covey? what travel ball team does he play for?
I would say the top pitcher in the SGV is easy to pick. Dylan Covey from Maranatha HS. He is just a Junior who has topped out at 97. Perfect Game has ranked the #2 player in the country for the '10 class.
From PG
Dylan Covey, who pitched one of the most dominating games at the World Wood Bat Association fall championship in Jupiter, Fla., in late October. Covey struck out 17 while allowing just one hit against the Kansas City Royals Scout Team, one of the more prospect-laden teams in the 80-team tournament.
Covey (Marantha HS, Pasadena), who has made a verbal commitment to San Diego, was overpowering in Jupiter with a fastball that was clocked consistently at 94 mph and a sharp, downer 78-80 mph breaking ball.
Roundball,
It sounds as if I hit a nerve re: good ole boy comment. What do you need to know to be proved wrong. Yes, the Willig brothers are all ST.Paul Alumus. The one thing I don`t understand is why is Chuck Willig blogging on football web sites about how he gets along with Pete and his staff and there has never been any ill will towards Pete, but in the contrary Chuck was talking up and down about Pete because he got the job and he didn`t. He want`s the ST.Paul so bad, one of his brothers will give one million dollars, so he can get the job. Why not give the money to the school during Pete`s reign if he really cares for his Alma Mater. I`m not saying Chuck or whom ever will not do a good job, but the motive is really underhanded.
We played the Diamond dawgs, I believe it was Urban, from Diamond Bar that pitched, he is good. Does he attend D.B. High? Is he a senior?
Yeah well don't worry about Bonita.
Calderaro and Gelalich are still hurt from football.
Mier's tired. Saw him the other day, looked sleepy.
They also lost their Catcher and the left and center fielder. New catcher sucks and the new OF guys will be sophs and suck too.
They'll all suck. Be lucky to beat anyone.
Honest.
Really.
Pitching, thanks for the name. What's his story? He was impressive, there were Pro scouts watching him. Nobody from our team Riverside Shockers knew him they just said, he was from D.B.,I enjoy watching talent.
That would have been Jake Urban from D.B.
I was watching a kid from D.B. pitch in the Christmas Classic tourney in O.C., he was lights out. Not sure about his name tall kid strong arm had at least 12 or 13 stike outs in 5 innings very impressive.
Amat probably has the best pitching followed by San Dimas and Northview. I don't think Amat has enough offense to 3-peat this year.
Who's Diamond Ranch's Pitcher? Northview? Charter Oak? South hills? Diamond Bar? CAN'T win without pitching!
The top players in the valley have to be:
Northview
SS- Pedroza (Fullerton)
3B- Arnold (UNLV)
C- Valenzuela (LMU)
LHP- Pedroza
Bonita
SS- Mier (USC)
OF- Gelalich (UCLA)
P- Calderaro
San Dimas
P- Ponzo (Utah)
C- Leyland (Wash. St.)
Glendora
INF- Regis (UCLA)
P- Plutko
P- Cage
INF- Wooward
Bishop Amat
LHP- Paez (USD)
P- Zuniga (UNLV)
C- McClanahan
2B- Bergara
Charter Oak
C- Bailey

Let's talk about the Top players in baseball this year....let's dish!
Pitching is a HUGE part of baseball.....Who's the top pitchers this year, speed etc....
DRRRR
Varsity basketball / Good Luck tonight against Mater Dei in OC tournament.Mater Dei is 11-0 and ranked 11th in the nation.Goooooo panthers
CO and Amat play in the third game of the tournament so we will see who has the most pitching depth as I'm sure both teams will pitch their number 3 starters.
charter oak wants amat bad in the glendora bb tourney. amat brags about their div 5 rings, pathetic is about all i can say.they should be in div 1 just like football. what is cif's thinking behind that call?
go c.o. baseball
Yes Amat is in the Glendora Tourney
it'd be nice if the trib could at least post the scores of the Covina tourney, I mean how hard is it? you've got a guy calling them in, but all you do is post who won, weak! don't you have a BB guru, who spouts off about how much he knows? we could skip all his propaganda and at least find out the score? and an aside to pissed off, the Willigs are not the good ole boys, they are the MEN at that school , all 7 playing football at St. Paul and playing D1 too, Matt has at least 1 Super Bowl ring to go with it, maybe it is time for a change there, prove me wrong , if you KNOW the whole story!
So IS AMAT playing in the Glendora Baseball tournament???
Fred
Does anyone know were Dominic tiger-Cortes is playing ball this year and did he receive a scholarship.
Hay Fred,
I just found out Bishop Amat's upcoming baseball schedule. Say what you want about them playing Division IV in the Del Rey League, but I challenge anyone around to match their schedule. They play:
Alta Loma
Diamond Ranch
Charter Oak
Chatsworth
Long Beach Wilson
Lakewood
Long Beach Millikan
Orange Lutheran
Santa Margarita
Servite
Cypress
Can you post any other local teams schedules.
Tough Choices,
I understand what you are saying, but I know for a fact that the previous principal left about one million dollars in a savings account for a rainy day. Apparently she has spent this money on redecorating her office and removing gum from the cement. She also repainted the school. I think she did not do a good job of evaluating whats best for the school regarding finances. If she had, Pete would still be there. She just likes to intimidate people to feel she`s in charge. Well, Pete is one she didn`t intimidate. Times are very hard for all financially, but not at the expense of a great football program. This one will cost her.
Ya I`ve heard the same thing.
He`s been at the school recently because of a new redevelopment committee that was created. I think it`s going to be Chuck Willig. Whatever, let the good ole boy network try and keep the kids I mentioned.
If this is true, then it is truly a shame.
However, sometimes the financial needs of a "community" outweigh the emotional needs of others.
If St Paul is truly hurting for some cash, and let me tell you that allot of people are these days, then she may be making a move that is baised on practicality.
Again, if its true, can you really blame her for making a move that is in the best interests of the school?
I mean, look at this objectively for just a moment.
If you ran a business that was running short of cash, and someone offered you a million dollars, tell me who wouldn’t seriously consider taking it?
Sometimes there are tough choices in life to make, but maybe this new guy won't be half bad as a coach.
We shall see.
Fred,
I would like to see the Tribune report on some of the other girls sports, I just saw the write up on High School Volleyball. I know that we do not have Field Hockey at all of the area high schools. It is a tough sport with more running and hand eye coordination than some other sports. I just want to congratulate my daughter Carly for making first team all league, she has worked so hard coming back from knee surgery and she deserves some praise along with the Goalie of her team for being the only first team girls in the Valley.Keep up the good work, I have really enjoyed following High School Football on the blogs
Thanks Robert K
Yeah, I'm talking to him, it's his story, so I'll keep everyone updated. Word is than Ancich could be coming back.
Thanks Fred,
What do you think. Did you try contacting Roger Murray to confirm. You don`t have to it`s true.
Ok Amat and Damien fans,
Here is what I just found out in and I`m pretty pissed off about it. ST. Paul Principal Laurie Barr is firing Head Coach Pete Gonzales for reasons outside of football. From what I was told the school is having financial problems, so Ms. Barr has made a deal with the devil. She apparently will fire Coach Gonzalez and she`ll recieve a one million dollar gift from a alumn to hire his brother to coach the team. I believe the name of the family is Willig. They all went to ST.Paul. This is a very bad time for Swordmen faitful and for the principal to resort to this tells you the lack of integrity and profeesionalism Ms. Barr displays. I know for a fact that many players will jump ship and go elsewere. Amat and Damien this may be an opportunity to get some real good players. Drake Griffin(LB), Zack Rodriguz(LB/SS), Deon Williams(RB), Markus Viramontes(LB),Stephan Carrillo(OL) and Paul Lopez(QB). I will never support ST.Paul football again as long as Ms. Barr or (AD)Mark Henandez who told Pete he had nothing to do with the decision "ya right" are running the ship . It is truly a tragedy for Pete, his staff and the players returning next season, which I felt would make another run for a CIF Title. We will never know. Three years 2 Semifinals, 1 league Championship, and 1 CIF Title (the first in 27 years) What a shame!
Pete I know you will find another job and win another CIF Title with the hard working staff that you have. Ms. Barr "what goes around comes around"
Fred,
please put my post regarding Pete Gonzales from the football 2009 blog.
