Boys Hoops: Guerrero scores 38 in his debut

Workman's super sophomore Cezar Guerrero, who we've playfully dubbed "El Mago," the Spanish kid's Magic Man, made his much-anticipated debut on Monday, and it was worth it. Guerrero scored 38 points with seven rebounds while junior Bobby Miles finished with 27 points and eight rebounds to lead Workman to an 80-61 victory over South Hills. Folks, I was impressed with both guards, but particularly the all-around complete game of Guerrero. He hit 12-of-16 shots and was 10-for-11 from the foul line. He showed a lot of those infamous YouTube moves, but it's so much better in person. His speed, change of direction and unbelievable handles make him difficult to guard. He can free himself to get almost any shot and he's so accurate, even when it looks like he's taking a tough shot. I can't believe this kid is only a sophomore. Is Workman a top ten team? Without a doubt. Are they one of the best in the Valley? I'm not ready to go there yet. They need a lot of work inside. South Hills pounded them on the boards and got to the stripe 25 times, but only converted 10 free throws. Maybe the best quote of the night came from Lobos coach Martin Flores, talking about the new excitement on Temple Ave., "It's kind of like you've been hungry for such a long time, you've been starving, and all of a sudden you've got a buffet in front of you," Flores said. "For such a long time we would come to a school like South Hills and be on the other end of this."

Who's Guerrero: A freshman phenom who left power St. John Bosco to play basketball at Workman, where the 5-foot-11 kid is regarded by Division I scouts as one of the best prospects for 2011. As one scout noted, "He needs to work on his decision-making (tends to force it), but he's one of the more impressive freshman guards I've witnessed in the last 15 years."
As only a freshman, the point guard averaged nearly 17 points while orchestrating the offense for a veteran laden team. Guerrero has had some of his best games while playing for Bosco in the toughTrinity League, which features some of the best teams in the state like Mater Dei, Santa Margarita and Serra. Guerrero had 22 points against Serra and 19 against eventual state champs, Mater Dei. Guerrero was supposed to pair in the backcourt with sophomore Bobby Miles, who averaged more than 20 points a game and earned first team all-league honors and all of a sudden you've got the makings one one of the top teams in the San Gabriel Valley.

I AM BOOMER AND NO ONE ELSE. I AM NOT FRED ROBLEDO. I AM A WORKMAN ALUMNI AND AM VERY PROUD TO HAVE LANDED A BIG TIME LIKE CEZAR GUERRERO. I ALSO PLAYED WITH BOBBY MILES, HE WAS A FRESHMAN, I WAS A SENIOR. AS A FRESHMAN MILES LED OUR TEAM IN BLOCKS, AND WAS ALL MONTVIEW LEAGUE. BOBBY MILES IS UNDERRATED!!!!!!!!!!

Fact,

I have never had this much fun blogging. Thanks for the fun and the comments.

It has been a pleasure, I am sure that we will blog again. Have a great day!

I'll be by your house to pick up my Polk High Jacket!!!!! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!

Fact: why do you post under different names?

Fact: I saw the papers beaues I was handling the check-in for teams at our tournament.

Fact: You keep talking baseball, when our subject is basketball.

Fact: all you can do is insult me, becaues you know I'm right.

Fact: Everytime you say something, you are probably going to get fired becaues you keep claiming it is a fact, and you have no idea what you are talking about.

Fact: How the hell did you get this job?

Fact: Your knowledge of Sana Ana is crazy, I'm speaking of Mater Dei high School, come by and watch them play and see how many Santa Ana Fans are there, all over Santa all they talk about is Mater Dei.

Fact: You make me laugh, the Times should hire you, we need more humor in the world right now.

trust me i am not Fred...I am just an EX SGV baller that pays attention to the local talent and wishes them the best

Just like Workman alumni Steven Luevano who is the Featherweight Champion of the World who is going to fight Rocky Juarez Jan. 24th on the Margarito vs. Mosley undercard...Make sure u watch

Fact:LOL...Everytime u open your mouth u sound more stupid. Why would anyone show u his papers who r u John Wooden? u r a parent who's own son doesnt ball they just dont show kids paperwork to anyone

Fact: Go to the game on Friday @ Workman and u can ask him for youself how old he is...

Fact:in 2000 a baseball player name Sergio Santos transfered from Los Altos to Mater Dei where he got drafted by ARZ. in the 1st round. his dad held him back 2 years in 8th grade so he could dominate high school..Shaun Cody, Sergio Santos and current Los Altos coach Felipe Aguilar were all on the same Travel Baseball team

Fact:When I say something it is a fact...u just talk out of your ass

Hey Fact, Boomer, or Fred,

Did you take my Polk High Jacket, I know you want it cause the only jacket you had in HS was a "members only" one, you tried to stich the name of your school on it to make look like a real HS jacket, don't worry maybe CJ will let you carry his jacket!!!!

Your call yourself a Journalist? Wow, of course his football coach will say he is only 15, I know the real truth, I have seen his Birth Certificate becaues he played in one of AAU tournaments and when you register, you have to bring for every kid a copy of their recent report card and their birth certificate, I bet if you dig deeper even you will realize his real age. Wow, you work here for free or they actually pay you over there. And as far as point guards scoring the most points all teh time, sure sometimes they do, but they will tell you theat their main objective is to run the offense and set-up their players, stick to baseball cause basketball is over your head. Damm your stupid Fre

Fact: He started at QB in Workmans CIF football game

Fact: Everytime u open your mouth I throw Facts right down it. Age,Scouts,Talent anything u have to say i have u covered

Fact: U r still wearing your POLK HIGH LETTERMAN

Fact: He is 15. I just talked to his Football coach who is one of my good friends. so like i said he was 14 last year (so who is the stupid one?)know your facts!

Fact:Santa Ana is the OC outcast. if u talk to any true OC resident they dont claim SANTA ANA one of the ugliest cities in So Cal

Fact: If u have a kid that is in High School u r not allowed to copy 50cent

Boomer Fan...get over yourself. Point guards should never be the main scorer?

How about Isaiah Thomas, Kevin Johnson, Tony Parker, Steve Nash, Steve Francis, Brandon Roy, ect. ect. ect.

Lay off the kid. We al know it was a mistake to leave SJB, no matter how it works out for him, but it's his life and as a 13/14/15 year old he's etitled to make his bed for better or worse.

Just a littel background on the SJB phnom tansfer "outs" , a couple of years ago SJB had a Fab Five Freshmen and Four leaft SJB after their Freshmen year.

Maybe Joe Amat knows the details but only one of those phenoms stayed all 4 years. Is it a pattern or is it something in the water but SJB has been down this road before.

Joe, or anyone else, .."what happened to those players?"...and wasn't one of them a seven footer.

Playing for the next level is a crap shhot at best. Willie Trimble was in my mind a can't miss kid but where's he at? Same goes for Shaun Livingston...it can all come creashing down around you in a second!

Best of luck Cezar.

So for thsoe that actually appreciate the game and want to see him in person....what's Workman's tournament schedule?

Fact your so stupid and an idiot. This is how you spell "Guard", second why would you say he is 14 or 14 years old, if you did not know it, he is 16 years old going to be 17 real soon. Wow a 17 year old Soph, sure he will stick to every guard in your league, your league is weak. Second why bring baseball in here we are talking about basketball, damm your stupid. It is going to be a long year for you, becaues everytime you post anything about this kid, I will be on you like a fat man on cake. You are way to funny, we need more stupid people like you in OC, they make us laugh!!!!! Damm you work for the Tribune too! Wow this just keeps getting better!!!!!

I am sorry i dont know his birthday...

Fact: The SGV plays baseball!...just like brazil plays soccer, dominican plays baseball,

Fact:CJ is only a sophmore and will D1...and we will back him and watch him stick it to every gaurd that tries to gaurd him over the next 3 years.

Fact: The SGV produces more baseball studs than any part of CA and probably the NATION

Fact: U r a DEUCHE that is sitting on your laptop wearing your Polk High Letterman with NO all-league patches

hey Facts. Boomer, or Fred

Whoever you are....

You are going down a tricky slope about now getting into his age, do you really want your reader to know that the "El Mago" biggest trick is making you believe he was 13 or 14 years old last year, This is really getting funny, Once his real age is out, what is going to say about him being 2-3 years older then regular sophs. You are a crackpot Fact, Boomer or Fred, like I said I kinda know now who is posting against me. Wow you are that biased huh?

Wow, Fact! I guess you really do not know CJ then. CJ is a hold back is is already 16 turing 17 soon as a soph more won. In fact some are even wondering if he is not a 2 year hold back, For someone named Facts, you sure don't know them.

See I knew we would agree on something. Sure you have 3 special players in SGV, that's great but everywhere else LA, SFV, Inland Empire, and OC they have all the best Basketball players period.

he may go Div ! but not to a big time program like UCLA or USC type of Div 1, he won't play becaues every ball hog can not play team basketball in college, NBA , maybe. But College basketball, no way.

They are not looking for just scores, they look for height, defense, and playing as a team. Point Guards should never be the main scorer, they are suppose to set their players up. All you folks in here are not helping CJ, you are only adding to his demise, becaues with each bravado you sent him about points and that no one can guard him, the less he will learn to be a playmaker and works a team player. Plus he will never work hard at improving his defense. That you have to admit is where he lacks big time. If he truly is going to be a great player then he needs to learn defense. Defense wins games!!!

lol u r too funny u r a parent of a high school kid at Mater Dei and u r wasting time trying to put down a kid that was 13-14yrs old last year and a Freshman balling on Varsity in the Trinity League

Do u have your POLK HIGH LETTERMAN JACKET on?

u r right there r better players out there than him but he is the best player in the valley and he will go D-1 and unlike every player that comes out of Mater Dei in basketball he will actually play and not sit the bench in college...The SGV is known for Baseball and NO ONE can hold thier jock straps when it comes to baseball not even MATER DEI...so let us celebrate are 1 great basketball star for the next 3 years

Find me 3 High School scorers in OC that can compare to JACOBSEN, and the MURRAY brothers...truth is you cant the 3 best scorers in CA history are from the SGV!

Also why don't you ask the other player at St. John Bosco and see what they have to say about him, you won;t like what you hear.

St. John Bosco came 4th in Trinity League behind 5th behind Servite last year. They were hoorible no team chemistry, all but one ball hog who did not care if the team won or not just as long as he got his points,

Dude, I am getting the feeling that you post under several different names.
Don't get your panties in a ruffle!!! I respect that you are looking for a hispanic Basketball hero, but please do not start talking about how he is the best player or no one can guard him, or this kid is that etc....... All I am saying is that whether he is hispanic, black, or white does not matter. Their are better players out there, lots of them.

Everyone at Mate Dei can guard him, but hey if you shoot 30 times per game, even a blind man will score 10+ points. Also your right my spelling does suck, but hey we are not here not to talk about my spelling but CJ. don't try and deveiate from topic. No, my son is not good enough to play on Mater Dei's basketball team, I am a realist. Not like puff smokers like you who brown-nose a kid behind, hey maybe I'll ask CJ for to autograph a bball for you, would like that?

boomer hater,

you're all the way from santa ana(orange county), what is your purpose to coming over to this blog if you have no business in the sgv. why do you hate guerrero for? did he break your sons ankles? that is if hes even on the team. you've mentioned kids who can guard him, but as i recall you did not mention anyone from mater dei, does this mean your son cannot guard him? HAHAHAHAHAHA, NOW WE KNOW WHY YOU'RE A CJ HATER!!!!!!!! wow, coming from someone who has ties with mater dei, you have poor spelling.

"I find it funny to see you SGV folks get all riled up on a kid who could not make in a our Trinity League. Nothing to say know huh!"

nothing to say know, or now? know and now are two different words. which one? wow. go back to your own blog jackass.

"At the same time his ability to make the tough shot can work against him as he has a tendency to force the issue as a scorer to the detriment of team play. Nonetheless, you can't ignore the talent that he possesses."

That paragraph says it all "force the issue as a scorer to the detriment of team play" Like I said the kid is good but not the messiah you said he

My team is the real team with rela div 1 players

"Mater Dei" , my son goes there!!!! I find it funny to see you SGV folks get all riled up on a kid who could not make in a our Trinity League. Nothing to say know huh!

Rivals.com Basketball Recruiting Analyst

Talk about it in Basketball Recruiting Board
ST. LOUIS - There were a number of talented 2011 prospects at the Nike Hoop Jamboree, and none were more impressive than combo guard Austin Rivers.

Rivers has a well rounded game.
Guards

Austin Rivers- Looks to be the complete package as a combo guard. Rivers handles with savvy, scores multiple ways and has the length and athleticism to defend and rebound his position. The son of Celtics coach Doc Rivers simply has a whole lot of game and has the potential to be a dominant player as he gets physically stronger.

Nick Johnson- Maybe not quite the point guard that Rivers is, Johnson shares the same qualities as Rivers. A strong two foot jumper, Johnson is a serious scoring threat in the midrange area with his advanced repertoire of shots.

Cezar Guerrero- A tremendous ball handler, Guerrero is a natural scorer who makes the difficult shot look easy. At the same time his ability to make the tough shot can work against him as he has a tendency to force the issue as a scorer to the detriment of team play. Nonetheless, you can't ignore the talent that he possesses.

I wonder who really is "Fact" could this person be Fred? I noticed that at first this blog as one that you ahd to find in Dec. 08, but suddendly it is in Fred little Box of recent bligs. Hmmm?

Do I smell Hispanic biased being played here? I could also give you stats where he played and he did not even score more then 10, Dino has always favored that kid and Dino is the guy that wrote that, he plays for Dino's AAU team, go find the real BB AA Writers.

boomer hater,

we have a kid to cheer for and root for in guerrero. who's your team? all this time you've been bashing this kid for no reason, so who's your team? i bet your team is from the montview league. sunny hills, walnut, and LA PUENTE were all scouting him at the south hills game.

Cezar Guerrero 5’11” So. Workman (City of Industry CA)

Sensational scoring point has also made great strides in becoming a better all-around lead guard. While he has still much room for improvement in getting teammates involved and making better half-court decisions, Cezar is definitely a high-major talent that plays with a “killer-instinct” and the crude truth is that he bested every top guard he tangled with here at this camp. In the top game, Guerrero really turned up the heat on the defensive end and his strong effort of 24 points with 7 assists/7 boards/and just 2 turnovers made a strong case for game and camp MVP honors.

Against all the top players not HSBB...

You can say all you want but I have seen him play many times in AAU and played against good or better guards and they lock this Gererro kid down, forget HS ball, most kids on HS teams can't play or keep up with AAU players, Like I said let him play against a good guard in AAU terms not HS terms and then you will see. I am not saying he sucks but not the messiah that you all are saying he is.

I seen this kid play twice. Last game i sat right behind the Walnut and Sunny Hills coaches who were both there scouting. No coaches ever scout Workman that shows u how nervous teams are about this matchup. Let me quote the actual coaches as i sat right behind the coaches talking "YOU CAN'T GAURD THE KID 1 ON 1". They both said the same thing they dont have anyone that can gaurd him. Let me tell u agian what they said "YOU CAN'T GAURD THE KID 1 ON 1"...He is the best player in the valley that i have seen sice Jacobsen. There was atleast 7-8 High School coaches there catching a peek (ask yourself why)

for all of u hatters just scroll up to the top of the page and click on the links. Either the "Division I Scouts" or the "2011". Those are real scouts talking not a bunch of dumbass haters. Find me some legit scouts talking about this walnut kid or any other kid in the valley and we will listen. these are kids and i hope they all go onto better things but to u hatters just shut up and look at the facts

Boomer and SGV Pride are both idiots to basketball, I can name quite a few that can Guard him....

Austin McBroom - Campbell Hall

Gabe York - OLU

James Douglas - OLU

CJ Cooper - La Verne Lutheran

Zack Galman - Walnut

their are other players that come in mind too many players I know by face that can. Stop promoting this kid and let's see how the season goes, also they played a week South Hills team. CJ Gurrero and Boobie Miles are great in SGV but common in regards to real basketball. Hey Boomer and SGV Pride why don't you ride CJ more ha ha ha ha ha

boomer hater,

you sound more like a cj hater to me. workman played a scrimage last week against vista high school(D-1) in san diego and he dropped 47 on them. i saw him play, he passed the ball well enough. i bet you've played against cj and he broke your ankles and thats why you hate him so much.

Boomer was asking if anybody can guard guerrero or bobby. Forget the fact that he hogs the ball

Can anyone GUARD cj???

Answer: No

Guard Bobby???

Answer: No

Show me a game where that happens, slow them down and contain them ya maybe but STOP?....Nope

you folks from SGV are idiots, do you believe everything, fist he scored those poitn against those trinity league teams cause he never passed the ball, and wait when he went to the Soph Show case at Dino this past summer he score 8 points against the real top players, and so before you open that mouth of your which is located in your ass, know what you are tlaking about you freaking idiot!!!!!

Blfan,

guerrero could berely score against better competition???? are you kidding me?? are you not reading the article? "Guerrero has had some of his best games while playing for Bosco in the toughTrinity League, which features some of the best teams in the state like Mater Dei, Santa Margarita and Serra. Guerrero had 22 points against Serra and 19 against eventual state champs, Mater Dei." YOU'VE JUST MADE YOURSELF LOOK LIKE A JACKASS!!!!!!!!!

bbfan,

i don't think anyone in the valley can guard cezar or bobby. you're stupid. all of you, you've seen his video from the summer, why don't you come out to workman this friday at 6pm and watch him take on sunny hills as hes gotten better. oh and by the way.... you've never even seen bobby miles play. non of you know why he left, so stop making rumors. why don't you ask him why he left and he'll tell you if he doesn't feel your a jackass.

Does anyone know how Cezar has done against the point guard from Chino Hills Derek Brown?

Seems like a good match up of egos and skill set.

Don't get mad all point guards have egos. This should be a good test for both.

Anyone know if they've played or are scheduled to play?

To: BBLit,

Big Differences the Walnut kid plays defense, Guerro is pure offense, Guerro could barely score when he played against better competition, Guerro is just flash, I gureetee you that Walnut kid would shut down either Guerrero or the Bobby Miles kid. Ask the better players about Guerrero and they will tell you he is easy to guard just a ball hog, that is why he went to Workman becaues they would not allow him to ball hog at St John Bosco. Guerrero will end up in the circus playing a clown with a basketball,

BBfan, I went to the DB/Walnut game. You have to be kidding with your "walnut has a soph more guard who is as good as Guerrero" comment.

I respect supporting your team but be realistic.

I think Cezar has been sold short, he's got fantastic talent, how do you think he'll progress at WorkmanHS, LA Trade Tech or Mt.Sac or AP you tell me, please..............I wish the young man well.....but I think he's being used, and poorly advised

"From the heart of the man speaketh the mouth." A lot of you ill-wishers need to examine your hearts. Cezar is just a kid. Are you so frustrated with your own lives that you have nothing better to do than to bash others? Speaking in analogies (look that one up), a barrel of crabs my friends. If one of the crabs manages to catch a hold of the edge of the barrel and starts to pull itself out, the other crabs will continue to try and pull it back down into the barrel.

SGV pride, Guerrero can get any shot he wants and he's a good shooter. The problem is if you double him, you've got Bobby Miles who is another pure scorer, and one who gets to the rim. Between the two, points won't be a problem. For them to be successful though the team needs to buy into the overall team defense, because they're small and they got pushed around. If players accept roles, which is what you have to do when you have two dymamic players like this, they can go a long way.

bridgetown puente warrior,

you weren't complaining about eddie CHOOSING TO LEAVE la puente for workman last year, why are you complaing about so called "recruiting" now? is it because now you really have no chance at defending your title? is that why at the league meeting your coach ignored flores's handshake? as well as the coach from sierra vista. you guys simply cannot compete with the lobos anymore. even without cj, bobby will destroy the montview league. all of a sudden a really great player transfers to workman, and the coach is an a**hole for it? come on now. no one complained when dorian wells went to south hills, or when mcbride went to los altos. i didn't see those coaches getting bashed. you act like your coaches wouldn't be all over this guy if they knew he was looking for a new school to go to. let this kid play, and don't take it too personal when he drops 40+ points on you. this kid will go D-1.

hurry up and jump on the wagon while its still early, cuz once cj shuts all of you up, you'll be on it.

Is Joe your first name and Mama your last?

Do as I say and not as I do...you learned that in Bible Study?

Short and sweet !

lol

Fredj

I know its early, but I was at the game also and I mean south hills just could not stop him. At what point do you think he can be stopped? At some point they will have to execute whatever they run once they get deep into the playoffs or when they play a quality team.

el recruito?

it doesn't matter what high school cezar goes to. he didn't get noticed at st john bosco, this kid goes to enough summer camps to compete with better competition. thats where he first got his looks. those videos you see on youtube aren't at bosco. look at all the D-1 college players..... they don't just show up and play high school basketball and go to the next level like that. they play summer ball and go to camps. the coach from ucla noticed him when he went to the ucla camp. thats where hes getting better and competing against the best.

oh by the way.... he just destroyed south hills. what do you think robledo, is workman the no. 1 team in the valley?

watch out for damien this year in basketball. they have a big/quick starting 5. PLUS, they go at least 10 men deep on the team. you have the two transfers from etiwanda last year who are not only athletic but now have high basketball iq. they boast a lineup of 6''2 or taller players with the exception of jake veith who is probably the best point guard in the sierra league. but the player i say to look out for is chris adams. he's a 6''3 2-guard who can shoot the lights out of the gym. WATCH OUT!

He probably didnt like the fact that their were no chicks at SJB...haha

Coyote Cup
Cal Hi @ Wilson 6:30p.m. Tomorrow

being a HS BB "phenom" is like being a NFL WR, they are both pretty much , catered to, prima donas, pimped out, by agents or coaches, narcissitic to a degree..well you get the idea, don't you

Come on Frank Corona, tone it down a little bit. It's always got to be a freck-en novel with you. Why cant you just make a point and keep it short and simple ? Why does it allways have to have "a moral to the story" or some tear jerker crap b-4 you can write anything, and why is it that you never post your name on these things?

huge... Huge... HUGE post of the day!
(that ones for MTC)

Wise words , My Friend. More should listen.

going to bosco was lik going to college. for someone who's just a freshmen to say'The player makes the school" is just a preview into this young and scared mind. no cezar...the player doesn't make the school. the "school' is bigger than the sport. the "team" bigger than than the player. and no one is bigger tahn the sport.

long after bobby hurley, christain laetner and grant hill left DUKE Coach K reloaded with even more players.

Long after Gail Goodrich, Walt Hazzard and Keith erickson left UCLA Coach Wooden reloaded with more hapionships and even greater players.

Yes Steve Lavin had players but than again so did Coach verti. Coaching Matters!

Too bad a young Cezar will have to eat those childish new age rap words very soon. "The player makes the school"...maybe in the streets or in the playground that may sound cool but when someone is going to give a $250,000 scholarship they like to think the "school makes the player".

Cezar let me give you some sound advice. Open your eyes! Is it any wonder all those Rap Moguls that perpetuate the "lingo of doubt" always put THEIR kids in the best PRIVATE schools? Instead of the HARD STREETS that make them?

Enjoy going against Wilson, Walnut, Damien, Los Altos and maybe even Glendora and Chino but don't think that NOT playing against Mater Dei, SJB, and Artesia will do you any favors.

See you next to the Great Willie Trimble! (Now HE HAD GAME!_ in a couple of years.

"to those that much is given...(look up the rest)!"...

same old workman coach recruiting players from other high schools. they take players from every where, to bad cif never investigates, they could have caught player thet transferred from la Puente to workman cuz the coach recruited them. ive had one of there players admit to me that hes recruits high school players. Too bad they lost the championship game vs lp haha. in there faces they should have stayed @ lp and maybe could have won a title. but hey hopefully by him being @ workmen itll make the other schools in the montview league better by making them work harder just to play this kid and trying to beat em.

boomer...............cezar will have all the stats and accolades any kid would want, but will he become a better player? will he full develop his skills? will he face stiff competition? will he prove his mantra that the player makes the school not vice-versa, if the pressure of HS BB was too great at SJB what will college be like? is he destined to be an AND1, highlight reel player? I, for one think he's received some bad advice(travel ball coaches) we shall see, I wish the kid well.

ok.......... seriously, you guys need to do all your talking after the season, once everything is said and done. workman has had a rough past, but they are loaded now. just wait and see. theres finally a coach there who cares about the players, and is getting them to play with tough competition. from what i know..... cj wanted to leave bosco because there was too much presure on him. he wanted to be at workman where he could be in high school just like any other normal kid, instead of being at a school where all they do is talk about basketball to him. remember what he said guys....."the school doesn't make the player, the player makes the school". hes gonna do an outstanding job putting workman on the map. so like i said, wait till the end of the season once everything is said and done to bash him, but more than likely, he will shut all of you up.

Basketball is such a tough sport. There are so many variables. Look at the talent across the country in cities like Philly, New York, ChI Town and many others. Is Guerro on their level?

Someone brought up OJ Mayo and the issue of a one year "deal"...hey that's college sports today. Don't hate the player hate the game. Anyone arguing about a college one and done for whte tennis girlies across the world? No this is a touchy situation for coaches and coaches only. I'm sure Coack K would have loved Kobe for one year but with 3 Championshis and 5 Finals appearances I'm sure it didn't hurt Kobe one bit. Being the Best Player in the World is just that. As far as education....ummmmmm...he's his own corporation...again, what's the point?

This kid "el mago" is an Hispanic kid that felt the need to be around "la gente" plain and simple. Why else would his nickname be in Spanish? Some day he'll see he made a terrible mistake. Not because he didn't get his scholarship but because he never took an opportunity when it was clearly in his hand. That's more telling to me than anything else. I lived in the Slaughter Alley area when I was first married and 25 years later it's not the sweetest place in the world....still. Especially with this crumbling economy drugs will again be the money maker it was back in the 80's when times were simolar but clearly not as bad as it will get. No jobs means no slinging...aka drug dealing.

Recently we see and hear about athlete after athlete being shot and stabbed, some even in their own home....some even killed. A couple of days ago a Giants reciever shot himself...alledgedly. One common denominator with these athletes....and NO it's not the color of their skin...although they are all black...is the culture and mentality they CAN NOT LEAVE BEHIND! still trying to 'HANG WIT DA PEOPLES!!!"...leave that behind!

CNN did a piece on my childhood neighborhood and highlighted White Fence and Hollenbeck Division wher I grew up 40+ years ago. Hasn't changed one bit. Well it has in some ways...now the "homies" Tat WHITE FENCE on their faces and heads...wow! Maybe that's a sign of desparation but back in the day that was only for PRISON LFERS and not 16 to 22 year olds. I hope Guerro doesn't "BIG TIME" one of these guys and finds himself hearing those "famous words of death"...WHERE YOU FROM?"

I hope to see "el mago" someday soon but the telling part to me will be who he hangs out with AFTER and BEFORE the games.

The game before the game either makes you or breaks you. Guerro just made the game "staked" against himself. For better or worse no one told him it was a terrible mistake...especially his coach...who should have known better.

Shame on the coach for ACCEPTING him back! SHAME ON THE COACH FOR ACCEPTING HIM BACK!

"Por eso la gente es la gente"

Lay off the kid Guerrero, he is still developing, for petes sake he is just a soph, he has 3 years of High school basketball to improve. Also the other Sopmore kid from Walnut, he is also still developing, both are starting point guards and I think they both have enough pressure and expectaions from everyone already. They will play great at times and they will also look like sophmore players at times. They will have other people hate on them. So leave tehe kids alone, let every kid develop and then when they are seniors you can judge them. So lay off Guerrero.

Hey Fred,

Are you comming tomorrow to watch the Walnut/Diamond Bar Game? At Walnut tomorrow at 6:30pm, Walnut, they too have a Soph Guard that transfered in from OLU that is their starting guard and from what I've seen just as good as Guerro. Just not as flashy and may not score as much but, plays hard defense and is a tru point guard and runs the offense and passes the ball. Shortfall maybe that he is only 5'7, he looks just like a smaller verison of Lenorad Rhodes (body type)

Murray was called a ball hog, a gunner, and was in fact a one trick pony, he was not the greatest thing since sliced bread, never a multi skilled player ever, he did make millions in the NBA as a shooter, bouncing from team to team, maybe the 8th or 9th man on the roster, Le Duc got every point out of him at Glendora possible, but Murray never was asked to board or play much D, just put the pea in the ocean!

this kid will make all the you tube and highlight tapes imaginable, the odds are stacked against him , in becoming a complete player, his college "scholarship" will be sold to somebody......oh like SC for some crumbs to his "coach"...think OJ Mayo, but on a lesser scale....ahhh the beauty of college BB....lmao at the irony of it all

Agreed. But that was going to be Tracy's role at the next level as well. He was a 6'9" scorer. CJ is a 5'11" PG and will need to develop that part of his game to maximize his potential.

But they'll win like crazy in the Montview... unless people try Loyola(Md) coach Jimmy Patsos' strategy against Davidson in which he essentially double-teamed Davidson's Stephen Curry the entire game.

Of course, the strategy effectively shut down Curry, but left Loyola playing 4-on-3 against a very good Davidson team, which won the game easily, 78-48.

I wonder of the other Lobos can step up when they face that?

I think he has to do what he has to do for them to win. If you remember, someone named Tracey Murray averaged 44 points a game his senior year. If he was doing that today, everyone would call him a ball hog. But their team was a success too.

What "Magic" did best was pass and make his teammates better. It remains to be seen if CJ does this, and it will be increasingly difficult at Workman. When he's clearly the best scorer in the Montview, it will be tough to encourage him to play the role of point guard/distributor - which he will need to do at the next level.

Closer to "Skip to My Lou" or "Sik Wit It" than "Magic" to me... but the talent is there.

Saturday I got the chance to ask a Miramonte Basketball Coach and a recently graduated all-league basketball player about this guy. Both told me they had seen the kid play in person, (the player told me he had also seen him play in the youtube clips).
From the Coach: “Hard to say if this guy could play for me. We don't encourage very much freelancing. He looks pretty good at park ball.”

From the player: “I think it might get old playing with a guy who dribbles that much. He looks like a good passer but doesn't seem to pass much”

I'll admit I know little about roundball, but watching the clips of this guy makes me think he sees himself as a one man team, giving up the ball only as a last resort. How do his teammates, and maybe more tellingly, his former teammates view his “magic” play.

does it seem odd to anyone else, that a young kid transfers from a very high profile league to an obscure, low budget, very minor profile school like Workman, I mean playing at SJB against Mater Dei and OLu and JSerra and the bigger tournaments to Workman, I mean we're talking Workman here, not big time at all, we're talking Workman! Did he just drive by the campus and fall in love with the La Pu ambiance or what? I mean we're talking Workman! And people talk about private schools recruiting! It couldn't be one of those nasty, cut-throat,slimy,stealth travel ball coaches"steering" him to "his" school could it? nah......only private schools recruit, right? Looks like this young guy got worked, used... for the benefit of some unscrupulous coach(s) what a shame.....I truly hope he gets to meet his full potential and doesn't get shuffled off to 4 HS in 4 years like some of these BB mega-talents. do
