Scouting Guru's 2008 football review

| | Comments (40) |

The Scouting Guru has been all over the San Gabriel Valley and beyond, and like always, he's offered to share his thoughts, free of charge. Don't hate, enjoy it for what it's worth, which is one man's opinion on the talent in the San Gabriel Valley. Today he offers his post-season high school football thoughts, and the latest in the football recruiting wars.

Well the season is finally over and with the publication of the All Area team slated for Thursday, all the awards have been passed out. So it's time to clean out the recruiting notebook and impressions from the post-season. Great job by the Charter Oak coaches and players led by Lou Farrar and the rest of the staff. To be third in line for a possible state birth shows you that they were the best team in the SGV. Here is our top 5 at the end of the season.

Guru's top five
1. Charter Oak
2. Bishop Amat
3. Diamond Ranch
4. South Hills
5. Rosemead

For much, much, more from the Guru, click the thread, he has plenty to discuss

In our opinion, Rosemead beats Rowland. We'll just leave it at that.

* Here is the latest on the recruiting front. Please understand that some stuff in time sensitive and can't be released at the present moment. Sermons, Price and Bowens are good to go with UCLA. South Hills QB Cameron Deen has several Divison 2 offers, a ton of D-1aa looks (with three to four schools very close to offering) and USC has informed him that they have a spot as a preferred walk-on . The USC offer is very interesting. Consider that many in the NFL think that Mark Sanchez will be turning pro, Mitch Mustain has only one year left at SC, Corp has two years left and Mater Dei QB Matt Barkley wasn't exactly tearing it up this season, Deen could very well fall in line and be given a true opportunity to compete for the top spot in a couple of years. We could envision him in the same situation as Mike McDonald and Clay Matthews (players that walked on that earned their scholarship). He would be the second player in the Steve Bogan era at South Hills to make a USC roster. The other is current senior Justin Hart

* San Dimas lineman Kyle Salm has an offer from Idaho and we think that is about as good as it gets. No other school appears to be wanting to offer the prospect, so its likely that Salm would be advised to take the offer and run with it. The Vandals have done a good job in getting lineman. They were able to secure a verbal from Corona Santiago lineman Jordan Johnson.

* South Hills does a very good job in getting their game film out to schools and there are a lot of D-1aa and D-2 schools that are interested in Wayne Goss, Joe Burruel and Alex Barrios. Barrios could very well end up at Cal Lutheran (a D-3 school in Thousand Oaks) and replace another SH alum Jacob Calderon who was named D-3 1st Team All-American this year at defensive end. Sounds like their is a nice pipeline from SH to Cal Lutheran.

* Charter Oak punter Daniel Colby has also garnered a lot of attention the last couple of weeks and is sitting on a couple of walk-on offers from several D-1 schools.

* As for quarterback Chris Allen, it's going to be an uphill climb to getting a D-1 scholarship. This is not my opinion, but it is the feeling amongst those on the recruiting circle that Allen just does not fit the measurables to being a D-1 QB. His size and speed hurts the prospect. It'll be interesting to see if CO will send his highlight film out to D-2 schools in hopes of him getting a offer. We like the kid a lot and think he is a very good high school QB who has accomplished a lot in his career. But the realities of the game is that it's going to be tough for him to get a D-1 offer. And such a shame!

* Another player that we think could land with a D-2 offer is San Dimas running back Daniel Joseph. He is again not big enough and fast enough to compete at the D-1 level. But if the SD coaching staff can send his film out to D-2 schools, we easily can envision him getting an offer.

* We tend to get spoiled with the officiating unit from Foothill-Citrus. They are one of the best in the Southern California. After watching the game film between South Hills and Schurr in the first round, we'd have to say that the Orange County unit is one of the worst. If you need a training tape on how not to officiate a playoff game, use the that game as a starting point.

* Right now, there are only two players that we can safely say will garner early offers from the class of 2010. They are Charter Oak RB Adam Muema and South Hills WR Ify Umodu. Muema has been rumored to have been offered by Nevada Reno and look for several Mountain West Conference schools to offer Umodu in January. As one Pac-10 Offensive Coordinator told us recently, "You just don't see many WR with the body type and athleticism as Umodu. They are very hard to fine....Muema runs really hard and would be a no-brainer if he was 6-2 rather than 5-10."

* The other players that could get offered early but could stumble for various reasons are running back Ricky Johnson of West Covina, Darian Johnson of Bishop Amat and Geoffrey Vaughns of South HIlls.

* One Division 1-AA schools has graded out South Hills linebacker Wayne Goss higher than Diamond Ranch LB Kyle Lenygel. Interesting.

* A case can be made for Steve Hagerty to being coach of the year in the area this year. But if he can get Amat to win seven games next year, he certainly should be coach of the year.

* My money is on Steve Ramirez to beat Robledo next year. It's tough beating the future king. I guess Robledo and the rest of the ex-fellow man over on the west side had a tough year this year. Don't worry Fred, there is always next year.

* Speaking of the west side, please win a game in the playoffs in the Southeast Division and then come back on here. Nothing like watching Muir underachieve this year.

* We've been asked by several area coaches to put together an all-underclass team. Sounds good to us, so it'll be posted on the day after Christmas.

* OK this one has been sitting in my craw for several years and now it's time to let it out. Covina District Field has turned into a disaster. At one time, the field was so good, you could play golf on it. But, things have turned south and now it's become a joke. To see the field as it was for quarterfinal night against Diamond Ranch was embarrising. It's time for Covina Valley Unified to strip the turf off and put field turf on it. Ironically, stadiums like District Field would be perfect fits for field turf. So it will be interesting if Covina Valley does the right thing and get field turf on it, or just leave things status quo and watch it get worse. Hey, I think we just answered the question.

* And speaking of doing the right thing, do you all remember when we asked about the possibility of the SGV's National Football Foundation to have the all-star game in January? Well, the IE is doing it. And if they can do it why can't we do it? By having the game in late June or July, the area doesn't get treated to seeing players like Price, Deen, Bowens, Sermons and others play because they have to get into summer training programs at their respective colleges. If they had the game in mid January, a lot more coaches would be able to coach and the best players would be able to play. But, I guess - just like with the District Field problems - this suggestion will fall on deaf ears. Such a shame.

* One last point. It's always interesting to hear parents during football games. They say the weirdest things. One place they do not belong on is the sidelines. Case in point, we were on the San Dimas sideline during their game against Northview this season (minding our business) when a parent came over to us and said "I guess you came here to watch a real team play." Nothing more needed to be said at that point and I laughed after the game was over and Northview won. So here is a suggestion to all administrators for the 2009 season, keep the parents in the stands. They have no reason to being on the sideline and it just doesn't make a fair representation to your school.

Guru is right on so many levels: he did say somethings could not be discussed at this time case in point would be Seals. Also Darion Johnson does not have an offer or committment to Oregon but we all believe he will have offers. The one thing he is truly right is about the all star game, if you want to see the most successful kids play it needs to be done in December or January before these kids leave in June to their respective colleges. Coaches have sat in our living room and we have asked about Guru and they all take stock and says he gets the SGV kids names out there who otherwise may have not have had a chance. If that is what he does for these kids then keep doing it.

the only real problem(s) stinking up in the city of Rosemead is the stench of Rosemead HS Varsity Football choke in the championship game AND the Detroit Lions coach - what great things to be proud of Rosemead!

Before you talk smack about Mater Dei's Matt Barkley you really should consider who his competition has been this season...

Mater Dei faced Carson, Corona Centennial, and Servite before the Trinity League.

You speak of Matt Barkley like he had a poor season playing the same teams that Charter Oak or South Hills played this year! LOL!

As much as you hate to admit it, Mr. Guru, there is a huge difference between a player's stats that come against the best programs in the state and/or nation and the typical San Gabriel Valley program that typically considers ONE visit from a Pac-5 powerhouse (like Mater Dei) comparable to a Super Bowl.

Statistics are not just statistics. You must always consider the level of competition. Those boys over at Bishop played against more than one team that had 3 or 4 or more Division 1 recruits!!!!!!

Bishop's players did not rack up stats against Nogales, Wilson, or Pioneer! LMFAO! I know this, the scouts know this, everyone with a half a brain knows this...

Mater Dei's Matt Barkley is getting a full ride to a DIV 1 school, Mr. Guru, regardless of his "statistics"

You can't measure Matt Barkley the way you measure Chris Allen. They did not even come close to having similar levels of competition.

Basically, stats are crap unless the stats of the opponents are taken into consideration...

Otherwise, all you will have is a bunch of hyped up JC kids wondering why in the world they did not get a scholarship...

LEVEL OF COMPETITION IS EVERYTHING! WHY IS IT THAT ONLY BISHOP PEOPLE KNOW THIS???

you guys are brutally tough on the guru. i'm inclined to believe that anyone working on behalf of the kids in the sgv should get a pat on the back. the only thing i'd wonder is if the guru is uncovering any "diamonds in the rough" that many aren't talking about. that would be great. i also have to agree with dan in that the ify kid is constantly talked about but when i saw him play, i wasn't terribly impressed either. i can't remember the smaller receiver's name or number, but he was more electric. don't know if the young man ify was great in other games, but just watching him play made me wonder about his "big time" abilities. i didn't really see it.

If there is money to be made writing the "scouting" gibberish that this "GURU" puts down on paper - then I am going to be a millionaire! Seriously: if this James guys is making one dollar for his football observations, then I am starting my own scouting service immediately.

Get lost James and quit jocking South Hills so hard - they simply were not that good this year - period!

sgvsportsfan said:

Hey James,
Could you please you spell check when writing on the blog. "Embarrassing" that you can't spell. I am sure that you are aware of the current state budget crisis that is impacting school districts state wide. Then again, probably not James. Putting turf down at the Covina District Field is not a priority for the school district when they are looking to cut 3-4 million dollars for this year when the state revises their budget in January. By the way, James was eating with Bogan trying to get his job back because the "scouting service" was an absolute joke. There was no "we" in the service. It was James and only James.

Dan said:

"GURU"
You can't seem to shake that South Hills bias, it will probably take a few years being away from South Hills to get rid of it, but then again I saw
you eating last week with coach Bogan as I was driving away from the drive thru at Carl's jr. that tells me there will alway's be a South Hills tilt in your reports.
Goss is a good LB but isn't close to Lengel, as
for Iffy, I only saw S.Hills twice[vs Los Altos & West Covina], but in those games he was not even the best reciever on his team, Vaughns was more impressive in both games, maybe Umodu excelled in other games.

MSACWIN said:

"guru, do you really think Matt Barkley did not tear it up this year?"

I'll answer for the guru... no MaTT Barkley "didn't tear it up" 23 td passes and 18 interceptions. He slid down the evaluation charts as well.

bill miller, thanks for the info. I saw the sh/rowland game and said at the time that bj was teh best athlete on the field. tremendous upside. tremendous ability to get open and run after balls in the air. yes i know balls are in the air but if anyone doesn't know what that means then you've never played. some wrs catch what's thrown to them, some catch balls when they are behind the defense and some catch balls that shouldn't be caught, Bj does all that PLUS catches deep balls in the air when others would give up on the pattern. bj's tough, tough, tough. best of luck to him

bill miller said:

maybe you need to check the stats for recievers in the san antonio league. b.j. oyefeso of rowland was #1 over both south hills players. b.j. is 6"3+., 215lbs, runs a 4.5 40 and has a 35' VERTICAL LEAP.

Your a sorry excuse for a Scout..

Thanks for the questions and "friendly" comments. I will have a column next week answers to your questions.

One thing, Diamond Ranch does an excellent job of sending film out and would no tbe surprised if a D-2 or D-3 took a flyer on Bonilla and Spirlin.

See you next week.

SH is NOT the Center of any world but YOURS said:

James, jaime or whatever your name is can you please stop making South Hills the center of OUR universe?

Lengyl is a monster at MLB. Case clased. He's eaner everyone's respect an ids going to one of the military acadamies to eventually serve our country. He's doing this in a time of war.

Your stupid throw away comment is just worthless. Thanks for nothing.

Of course the D1AA coach rates Goss better than Lengyl.
1) He doesn't have a shot at Lengyl
2) He's talking to a SH Homer like you

I talked to you a couple of times on the sideline of games and to mock that parent is just stupid again. Why?Why do you think his comment was anything more than parental pride. Have kids Jaime? No. Didn't think so.

One question I do have for you is this.

You mention "we" alot. as in "we wre minding our business" and "we" believe this or that...who is "WE"?

Maybe if your asssestments of players was based on a group rather than just you it might hold more water.

Either way James I've tried to be supportive of your role here but when all you do is lather every comment with a SH reference ...well it just doesn't have merit anymore for me.

You've been on the sidelines of a couple of DR games. Most from what I saw ...at the end of games. DR was a better team than SH. Better players across the board except QB.

DR had a better line, better TE, Better DBs, Better RB and yet the litmus test is always SH.

James...who played in the Championship Game?

LMAO said:

I am LMAO reading this guys crap. Amazing how the tribune assoicates themselves with this loser.

CO better than Amat. James, play some football then get back to us.

please said:

slaker, I think Chris Allen is great too, but DI's don't just give people looks. That kid has to fit a need or have what the school is looking for. "Just give them a good look"? C'mon, you're naivety is killing me and shows that you don't really understand how this stuff works. Hopefully Allen gets some looks but I agree with the Guru in his assessment of the kid. He should look into conferences like the SWAC. He'd probably still be allowed to play qb and would kill in one of those schools.

SHHS said:

I guess the Guru missed Teague from Pomona..

I am sure he'll be off the mark with others too!

Some just won't talk about it on this blog. Its not a very positive marketing tool for any player. Especially because this A##hole James keeps trying to profit off kids..

I know James, you don't take money from parents, just use their names. LOL

please said:

Guru, you didn't mention anything about Seals from Amat. You also didn't mention Cid from West Covina. If you uncovered anything about those two, that would probably give you a bit more credibility with some. By the way, you keep pumping the Ify kid. He's awkward and average at best. Yes, he has good size, but I'd like to see the list of schools (DI) who plan to offer him early. As for Ricky Johnson, the kid runs hard and I hope a team takes a flyer on him. I only saw him against Amat and he didn't light the world on fire that day, but I think he was nicked up and still showed explosiveness at times. Darian Johnson is small, but most likely a Pac-10 player and easily the best corner in this area (not just Amat homing there). Didn't the Guru say as much in an early blog this season? Geoffrey Vaughns is very athletic, but I wonder about the level of competition he plays and I've heard somewhere that he doesn't have the best attitude or work ethic. I could be wrong, but I would think he's a DIAA or DII kid.

slaker said:

Comments on Chris Allen are dubious to say the least. Having watched Chris since he was 8 ys old. The freshmen team at CO was a powerhouse Allen in his younger years was a MLB and destroyed runnig backs. Any look at him should think about this . Taking him out of this roll worked for Big Lou as Chris adapted. Chris like Evan Williams a MLB as freshman and Tyler Perri can play many positions.
What I am saying is these young men can adapt and play well for any coach. Can they play Div 1 ball ? Maybe, just give them a good look.

guru, do you really think Matt Barkley did not tear it up this year? he played 3 times as well as Deen, his arm strength alone is off the charts,at least the equal of Elways at Granada Hills, if not better.Of course Mater Dei, plays at a level 10 times as high as SH, factor that in, then to not have the facts as far as pertaing to Mustain and Corp, another faux pas, as far as Sanchez coming back next year(he will) Deen would not be the scout team QB for at least 3 years, with those guys all in front of him, making the "possibility"scholarship nearly zilch, at least McDonald was recruited and had Ivy League possibilities out of Newport Harbor and his dad has a little pull at SC,so he had a lot more to offer there, you're so far far from reality on this "situation" it's pathetic, hopefully the Deans put nothing into your "opinion"

The Foothill-Citrus unit really does officiate well. I'm going to have to agree that the OC units are awful. They'll give a playoff game to just about anyone. I didn't see the South Hills-Schurr game, but they I saw a few playoff games last year, and their mechanics were horrible.
Whitey, in the playoffs, officiating crews from any unit can do any game in Southern California. The CO-Rowland game was a San Gabriel Valley unit. The DR-West Covina game was a Coachella Valley unit. The CO-DR final was a Long Beach unit. Also, they take individuals from various units and compile an all-star crew for some of the finals and the CIF Bowl Games.

Guru means donkey in Spanish. My son personally plays at Diamond Ranch and I was told personally by Coach Layton he said no one sends more tapes to more schools at every level including Division III colleges than ourselves and Charter Oak. Coach Layton told me matter of fact that both of our schools are working together to advocate for every student athlete regardless of if they played for Charter Oak or Diamond Ranch. I am very impressed with the professionalism amongst schools supporting their players in the best interest of their futures. Last I heard several Division 1-AA schools were looking at four or five Charter Oak players and hopefully a few more of our young men. I was very pleased when Coach Layton told me that our league produces college football players every year and the two C.I.F. Finalists have the creditability and reputation of "getting kids out" sort of speak. Good luck on making dreams come true. Merry Christmas!

Guru,

I hear you. A lot was said this past year by myself and other Stang supporters and we ate A TON of crow after the first round ouster by DR. Disappointing to say the least, but hey, we'll take it on the chin for now.

BUT, coming from a self-professed South Hills Husky hack like yourself your words ring hollow and simply don't resonate. Had Muir played ANYONE other than DR and CO they would've continued on. Yes, I know, woulda-coulda-shoulda, but your team lost to the same team mine lost to. Had we played Shurr like you guys do you honestly think we wouldn't have won?

My one wish of playing SH was not granted unfortunately, because the way our teams matched up there is no way SH would have been victorioous. With NO run game to speak of the SH offense would have been forced to play to our strength....our DB's. DR realized this and in the rematch threw the rock about 5 times which was a smart move on their behalf. But hey, it didn't happen and we both lost to one of the finalists. And for a team that some on here early on in the season called a possible "state championship" team, wouldn't you say that SH also "underachieved?" I would.

How can you live with yourself? Oh thats right, the alleged issue in Kentucky is still hanging over your head. Hey Fred why don't you get someone who knows about football and has a Bachelors degree from a college. Not some two bit hack who can't spot talent if it him.
