Tribskin Pick'em, your predictions and ours
![]()
Steve Ramirez and I will go head-to-head throughout the season, and I will update our records each Monday on the Tribskin Pick'em thread.
Robledo: Last week - 7-5; Season - 199-51
Ramirez: Last week - 6-6; Season - 188-62
Notes: What a week. The Mid-Valley Division crushed me, going 0-for-4, and Stevie R., didn't do that much better, going 1-3 by taking Monrovia over Duarte. I came back in the Central Division, going 4-for-4 by predicting all three Sierra League teams would go down in the quarters while Steve stuck with Ayala and Glendora. We both went 3-1 in the Southeast, missing only the Diamond Ranch victory over South Hills in overtime.
Robledo's picks of note: Let's start with the easiest picks. Rosemead should at least be a two-touchdown favorite over Monrovia, and Paraclete a three-touchdown favorite over Temple City in the Mid-Valley Division semifinals. The Southeast is tougher. Charter Oak is obviously the favorite over Rowland, but nobody has been able to whip the Raiders the way the Chargers have with their other opponents. With the game at Rowland it should be close, but the Chargers are on a mission and will advance. In the bottom half is where Diamond Ranch's dream comeback ends against West Covina. It's a battle of the big boys, but the Bulldogs will survive, though this will be extremely close also. In the Central I like Rancho Cucamonga to beat Cajon, and Upland over Los Osos.
CIF-SS Semifinals
Southeast Division
Friday
Charter Oak (11-0-1) at Rowland (10-2), 7:30 p.m. -- Robledo (COak); Ramirez (COak)
Saturday

Mid-Valley Division
Friday
Rosemead (10-2) at Monrovia (10-2), 7:30 p.m. -- Robledo (Rose); Ramirez (Rose)
Saturday
Paraclete (9-3) at Temple City (7-4), 7:30 p.m. -- Robledo (Paraclete); Ramirez (Paraclete)
Central Division
Friday
Rancho Cucamonga (11-0-1) at Cajon (8-3-1), 7:30 p.m. -- Robledo (RC); Ramirez (RC)
Saturday
Los Osos (10-2) at Upland (10-2), 7:30 p.m. -- Robledo (Upland); Ramirez (Los Osos)

Jesus, does anyone on here know how to spell words properly and use proper grammar and punctuation? You all must live in the San Gabriel Valley's "dumb-me-down," stretch of Monrovia, Duarte, Hell Monte, La Puente, Baldwin Park and a few other "lesser educated" zones in this bastion of liberalism.
Posted by: learn how to spell before you rip kids | December 3, 2008 12:41 PM
Amat is one of a kind and the D1 team of the SGV, but if you cannot go there to play, or if you cannot afford it, or you just are not into going to a Catholic school, then what better place to play your football then Charter Oak. Big Lou has a winning program, he really can coach and I would much rather have my kid play there then any other HS in SGV. What is at Los Altos? Nothing. Walnut,Wilson,La Puente,Bassett,Workman,Nogales are the worst. So. Hills is ok but way overated. Rowland is a one hit wonder. Baldwin Park is insane. Diamond Ranch another overated. Diamond Bar, Glendora, Damien all so so schools that never get anywhere. Rosemead another one hit wonder. Charter Oak is always in the thick of things and that is chalked up to a great coaching staff. You have a talented football player that is a 8th grader and Bishop is not the place for you then CO is the second best choice. If Fred Posted a poll of percentages of a school in SGV other then Bishop Amat to send your football youth to, I am sure CO will get the most hits. Come on Fred do this Poll.

Im sorry did I say recruited, I menat coached. REALLY!! We all know that Big Lou doesnt recruit players from Monrovia, Duarte and BA. I meant very well coached...Sorry CO bloggers..Looks like I touched a nerve!!

to be quite honest... for the longest time, rowland high school has been over looked and disregarded....since 1976 we havent been to semi finals of CIF.
charter oak is without a doubt the best team we will play all year, but to be quite honest, they dont want it as much as we do.
we have too much determination and willpower to lose.
we all have been through it, the two a days, weight lifting, running, play memorizing, so we can beat them.
we are HUNGRY for a championship...and we will leave it all on the field come friday night. they are good, but then again so are we. WE READY
dont overlook us again, were on the map NOW BABY
its not the size of the dog in the fight, its the size of the fight in the dog. remember that.
Posted by: raiderblood | December 2, 2008 9:46 PM
I saw the CO DR game on film. CO beat them because they were the fresher team in the 4th Quarter, CO does not have alt of kids going both ways. thats is what make them so good. The 1 td You did score was on a broken long pass play.
And for you win againts South hills. same thing happend long pass that #5 went for the interception. if he just plays the ball DR does not score. also SH was driving down the field with let me say no running game whats so ever. and missed the game clinching field goal. I really thought you DR beat them but it looked like SH lost the game , Just be glad you are there and just play football See you Saturday night.

ROWLAND....READ and MANIFEST. They (CO) are a group of young men like yourselves. They dont take steroids and are not super human. They just happen to be a very well "recruited" team. Nothing wrong with that. They (CO) breathe the same air, bleed the same blood, and lift the same weights you lift. I know some of you players are looking at this blog and thinking pessimistically, but you cant. That TEAM is beatable. 16-7 with 3:20 left in the fourth quarter, should tell you something. Dont trip about being an underdog. We have been that for the last 3 years.
And as for CO you will be surprised at what a younger, scarier kid will do to a bully when backed into a corner. Keep talking, you guys might choke on your charge!!!

CO Hater:
I never call out another team before a game, as there is no value to that-no advantage to gain. All I would like to say is that we are here in the semis, while a lot of other teams are not that have received much kudos on this blog-SH, Stangs, San Dimas, Bonita, the list goes on and on. CO is clearly the team to beat in the Southeast, and has been all season. They are the favorites, we are the underdogs-and have been all season.

I predict that Robledo will not kiss Maggiore and the Godfather's (Farrar)ass now that his beloved blood family from La Puente (Amat) and his white dad (Bogan) are toast. That must crush him as much as the fact that Citrus College would kick UCLA's ass in football.

San Marino? Who Monrovia beat by almost the same Margin RHS beat Monrovia
42-19?
OR Monrovia who RHS already beat 42-21?

I'm a closet TC fan from a distance since the Hitchcock days and, obviously, when DiFiori left Amat to spend some time there. I always wondered why we never played during their heyday.
I have some conspiracy theories that lead to "turf" wars and a battle over players/coaches from th etime that Mission HS closed (ie: Sciarra/ Coach Duff, etc)
Any insight?

Rowland Fans
Are you seriously calling out CO? You might want to rethink that strategy. I watched you against La Serna. While you were definately the better team that night, CO is a whole new world. Now you are giving them a whole lot more incentive to kick you in the teeth. If I was you I would stay quiet & pray your team plays the game of their life & CO has 8 turnovers. Then, you may have a chance.

Question:
How did Paraclete shut down the NV running game?
From what I saw Paraclete strung out sweeps, tosses, anything outside. Off tackle and inside the linebackers quickly filled whatever opened up..and limited gains to minimal. They gang tackled as well. NV had the size and strength advantage...so that is not the answer.
anyone who was at the game...would appreciate your insights.
Posted by: Goldenarm | December 2, 2008 6:07 AM
Joe Amat, FJR,
apologies for my tunnel vision in ragging Fred on his prediction %....I was focused on his recent WSGV picks, only one aspect of the big picture.
Were I an oddsmaker or football observer from anywhere reviewing two teams...Paraclete over TC would be my choice as well. I also know this is a team heavy on preparation, a crucial plus for a non SGV playoff team.
TC will play hard, that I assure you. Any and all ESGV football fans are welcome in our stands Friday. You might just witness the upset know one believes possible.
Go Rams!!
schedule up,
good stats, except utilize the full spread, not just those which help make your point. Witness 10-1 Azusa rolled by 6-4-1 Temple City.

The numbers dont lie. Marquise has the better numbers and is a much better running back. He's not trying to be a linebacker, We have some of the Baddest Linebackers in the Valley as well. He would have probably been a 2500 yard rusher in the Mission Valley League. He's Bigger, Stronger and Faster and most of all more mature than Tra so that does make him a bit more desirable for most Major Colleges. He's a Man Amongst Boys. Never has he ever put his team in jeopardy by lacking self discipline.

charter oak nation,
you may call me baby boy but yeah let's look at your boys on both lines. there is a difference between strong and fat and tough and strong. everyone has been saying your linemen are wonderful and the only part of wonder in your linemen is wonderwomen! seriously how many of the yards is your running back getting and does he earn on his own. you've seen what we do with overweight linemen we throw are weight around meaning strength and speed and if you look at your two overrated defensive ends what diet and weight program were they on in the offseason because the hype is just that hype you know as well as I do they can't run with our quarterback or running backs. your not getting sacks. read what you wrote you give our skilled guys credit which tells me you are already realizing we match up with you. you may bark but we bite and bottom line is we want it more than you do because we have never been here before and you have so were not going to get this close and let it get away from us now. let's get it on! and oh yeah you don't even want to get started about your corners because they can't cover us. a sophmore and your backup running back. please stop now.

See the reason Monrovia is in trouble is because Sumler is the best FOOTBALL PLAYER in the Valley. Not just the Best Running back... How good can Marquise Williams be if he only plays on offense? He only has 4 tackles on the season, whereas Tra Sumler has 74 total tackles, 11 sacks (YES 11), and 2 Fmb Rec's.
Even then Tra has better rushing numbers than Marquise Williams.
You can make the numbers look like anyway you want them. What you forgot to mention is Tra missed the second half of your game, Missed game #3, and Rosemead had 5 games that finished with a runnning clock, where Tra didnt play in the fourth quarter. Adding all that up would mean Tra has only played a total of 9 games to your Marquise Williams' 12 games.
Sorry to say Tra is better than your boy and Tra and the Panthers will have to prove that AGAIN this friday!

Dan,
Brandon Stansell of Rowland is an excellent back my vote for best back in the San Antonio league... Ricky Johnson also a great back, but WC pretty much just runs the ball if thats all u do the yardage will come, though Ricky Johnson is having a great season Stansell is much quicker and has the break away speed... I saw Johnson play and hes impressive but Stansell has it all, power, speed and quickness... Like i said earlier i dont know what hapend to #22 our sophomore back but him and ricky could go toe to toe... Ricky has the power over our little back, but our has the break away speed and is very quick... Our line just struggled a bit, Deen didnt get the greatest pass protection either...

One other thing,
Fred, just wondering why you still don't do an SGV top ten each week, it's still is fun to read and debate this stuff even as it gets clearer each week.
Posted by: Dan | December 1, 2008 9:10 PM
LilBushleague,
I hear you on Ricky Johnson, he is overlooked big time, I don't think he has had player of the week all year, yet he is right there with the other top backs in the sgv. The 1700 yards you mentioned that he has, was done against a tougher schedule than most of the other backs in the sgv. he's had 2 or 3 games over 2ooyds. plus several that were 120 to 180 yrds. Another good back that gets overlooked is Brandon Stansell of Rowland.
Posted by: Dan | December 1, 2008 9:07 PM
Fred,
Do u have any idea what hapend with him???
Posted by: Huskies... | December 1, 2008 9:04 PM
Our offense did suffer... Roddy had a great game, the rest of the WR did ok... We couldn't establish our run game... Freshman back did what he could, but ? what happened to #22 Gutierrez our sophomore back??? He was our leading rusher against schurr and he ended up with the most total yards, yet in this game he didn't get the ball much??? What happened there???
Posted by: Huskies... | December 1, 2008 9:02 PM
WC vs D.Ranch - If the Bulldogs come out with intensity and play hard in
all 4 quarters I like their chances against anyone in this division. If they are flat or make a lot of mistakes it will be a long night vs D.Ranch.
CO vs Rowland - I don't see a CO blowout happening here, Rowland has been playing some good ball all year and has beat some pretty good teams in both of their playoff games, they have also been in more tight games [WC,SH. & Burroughs] than CO has been in. On the other hand CO has not been tested since the Rancho C. game, This could hurt them in tough games. Although it wouldn't suprise me if Rowland pulled an upset, I think CO will pull out of a close game in the 4th
quarter by 1 or 2 late TD's.
Rosemead vs Monrovia -
I would like to see Monrovia win this one because I like former WC coach Maddox, but Rosemead has played a tougher schedule and came close against S,Hills, and crushed a good San Dimas team. Monrovia hasn't played anyone near the caliber of S.Hills or even San Dimas, with Sumler playing the full game I have to go with Rosemead, but I think it will be closer this time around,
I'll take Rosemead by 10pts.
Temple City vs Paraclete - I don't know much about these teams but Paraclete came close to a pretty good Serrano team, they also beat Northview who beat San Dimas, Rosemead is the only team with a cal preps rating above 20 on TC's schedule and TC got crushed by the mead, I will have to go with Paraclete by 2 or 3 TD's on this one.
Posted by: Dan | December 1, 2008 8:53 PM
I want to wish all SGV Teams goodluck in this weeks semi finals.
Another note i hear all the talk about Cam's game on friday night but how did the rest of the Husky offense do?? Hart, Umodu, Bevel, Roddy, Vaughns???
Posted by: Husky Nation | December 1, 2008 8:46 PM
No one else may believe in us but we do and that's how we want people to feel about us is that we don't have a chance because really charter oak doesn't scare us and even though others may think when we beat them the game will be an upset we seriously know we have as good if not better athletes than them so understand they better play their best game because they haven't seen anyone like us yet because they may tackle but we hit they may run but we sprint they may jump but we leap they may have superman but we are supermen and when we knock out the champ we will be the ones wearing the belt and will be the real heavyweight champion of our division. put the women and children to bed boys the party is over. lights out, let's do this!
Posted by: Rowland Raider Nation | December 1, 2008 8:33 PM
My prediction ...
RHS 28
Monrovia 17
I honestly DO NOT see Monrovia getting much more than that. If indeed the D is better than in the preseason , Tra STILL gets at least two touchdown & 100+ yards .We will find out in a few nights.
FIGHT ON

There is so much talk about DR vs CO!! Look a couple of things I have to point out being an avid fan of DR, we need to take things a step at a time. WC is a strong and very determined team. My only issue with them is they run the ball, umm....70/30
We have (3) 1st team all-league linebackers in #54,#12,#42 (2) defensive ends, #34,#88 who are heavy on the rush and (2) very solid, hard hitting DB's in #4 and the sophmore #15, which are both 1st and 2nd team Miramonte AL choices. They will have absolutely have to air the ball in order to beat us. And the air is right, we have been battle tested against the run. Muema, Malcolm Smith of OC, Thomas of Muir, Gilmore, Gaisley of BA. We have had our share of Big O-Lines and Swift backs.
And back to CO, 23 to 7 was the Victory margin. It was 15 to 7 all the way into 4 mins left in the 4th Qtr. Again, the only other team to shut CO down like that was Rancho Cucamonga. We size up well with CO and WC. And besides we didnt have #5 and #2 in the defensive or offensive backfield when we played CO. If it makes CO feel better, that safety, #26, is a freshman. We will have no excuses except to go out and prove to DIAMOND RANCH that we deserve to be where we are. We look forward to a high collision, well drawn out, coached and executed game. We wish CO,MEAD, WC all ample amount of luck and blessings for and after this weekend. Just let the bset team win in all competitions!!!

Monrovia is improved but please so has Rosemead improved. The second string running back ran all over the cats. The Mead will be ready come Friday night!
Posted by: oldschoolpanther | December 1, 2008 8:19 PM
A great game is on the docket on Friday in the Cat's House. A big, physical team in Rosemead is coming to town...on a roll. They play with a lean...an attitude.
Monrovia is quick...and stubborn. They are difficult to dissect because of their multiple threats. Their D is stout in the red zone and they tend to be their biggest opponent.
Monrovia executes on offense, and the D keeps it close. This game won't be decided until the final 3 minutes.
Monrovia - 20
Rosemead - 16
GO CATS!

I don't think Lou is afraid of anyone in the Southeast. That's the problem. He has the talent to play just about anyone. I would love to see La Habra on the schedule. That would be a huge win if they could pull that off. They have the speed to do it. Who is on the schedule next year?

I was looking through some stuff a while back and I noticed that in our division only SEVEN schools have won titles since 1990. Does that mean all the other schools are failing? NO! Some coaches are doing a darn good job and the ball doesn't bounce there way that year, or everyone didn't stay healthy,... whatever.
You have to be pretty lucky AND good to win it all

most of us ghs fans are still in shock that our o line got hammered like that. the defence was out of gas by the third quarter because the offence could not get anything
going. give credit to upland, they played a great game and had a great game plan. must say coach p and i have not seen eye to eye all year, from practice habits to game planning, to handling subs. but the guy gets good results every year, not cif chanps results, but good 7-8-9 win years. we do have good talent that did not play this year that should play next year. kaluzney was terrific all year, too bad he had his worst game in the second round of the playoffs , anyways great job players and boosters, iwould say it was a good year, now lets get ready for b-ball

Monrovia lost to Arcadia 41-27. Arcadia is 4-6 and lost to St. Francis 54-7!
Duarte is 6-6 and got destroyed by South Hills 48-6.
Beckman is 6-4 and plays no one of interest.
LaSalle is 1-9 and plays no one of interest.
Temple City is 7-4-1 and lost to 5-6 San Gabriel...zzzzz.
South Pasadena is 2-8.
La Canada is 4-5-1.
Blair is 1-7
San Marino. By far Monrovia's 2nd toughest opponent at 8-3. San Marino also lost to Temple City though...
El Monte is 5-6.
Finally, Monrovia lost to Rosemead big 42-21. To put things in better perspective, Rosemead lost to South Hills.
So yes...impressive stats. But against who? Rosemead? South Hills just lost to Diamond Ranch too.
Statistics aren't everything. I'm sure this kid is very talented but it does help a lot if your school schedules more challenging programs. It also helps more if your school actually beats their most challenging opponent.

CO Hater,
I have been to nearly every CO game since 1998. This year was the first year that the CO schedule was not too intimidating (with the exception of RC- what a game). Typically we have Glendora and WC, and Damien is usually a lot tougher. We have had Bishop Amat, La Mirada, Trabuco Hills, South Hills. It's not like CO can schedule any team they want every year.
As for Big Lou being scared....not a chance....only those who fear him and his program.

Rosemead is on a mission this year and the Panthers defense is second in the state on sacks. Monrovia is a good team but Rosemead just brings it like nobody else!
Posted by: oldschoolpanther | December 1, 2008 4:33 PM
Gentlemen this is the kind of blogging that make it worthwhile. I would love to have Either of these two guys on my team at anytime. Monrovia is used to having both styles of running back. 2006 Sparks/Davis very good combo to have. This year Williams/Cole. Cole is Monrovia's key to this win. He only had 1 carry in the earlier game with Rosemead but when he has carried the ball 10 or more times Williams has become SuperMan. Cole is the Best unknown Running Back in the WHole SGVN. He is electrifying and able to get a quick 150 yards without missing a beat. He will be our X factor. I think Rosemead X factor is that they have several capable receivers to through a wrench in a defensive coordinators game plan. With that All said, Both teams will play hard on both sides of the ball and Hopefully you will see an athletic slugfest. It seems you guys Scared poor San Dimas to death: 4 turnovers (Fumbles) not this week. It will be Rockum Sockum Robot.
Posted by: Observantcat | December 1, 2008 4:14 PM
Having seen both teams I would have to agree with Fred on his pick of Rosemead. Monrovia has some wonderful athletes, but the physicality Rosemead plays with is something that I don't believe Monrovia will be able to match. As for the running backs, their styles mimic the style of their teams. Tra is a physical runner, a very emotional player. Marquis is smooth and athletic, but he doesn't finish runs. He is a gamebreaker, and will probably have one, but he won't control the game the way Monrovia will need him to.
Posted by: Up Close | December 1, 2008 3:53 PM
o, and i forgot to mention that tra was suspended for 1 game and rosemead has the tougher strength of schedule. Dont get me wrong, im not taking anything away from williams, but i just want to get the stats straight. rosemead and monrovia will be a great game. goodluck, and may the best team win.

tappedout,
You had it right last week when you stated schedule and experience would make the difference. The only thing is you had it for the wrong team. I believe that due to DR's pre-league schedule of playing all those tough teams has them ready for the teams they face in the playoffs. It would have been to SH's benefit to schedule a few strong schools other than La Habra for pre-league just to test themselves against better competition to see just where they stood . I am not in any way saying they should schedule AMAT but at least some other teams that are on par with what they think of themselves to be which I believe is a top notch championship caliber team. Now we will see who earns the right between DR and WC to face CO . The same could apply for that game also because both DR and WC have tested themselves in pre-league where it is questionable on where exactly CO stands when facing equal or superior teams. This is not a knock on CO so don't start with the bashing on AMAT but I am only refering to what the majority of bloggers are writting about CO and their schedule.

After wiping ALL the egg off of my face and stuffing myself with a murder of crows last Thursday (I must admit turkey tastes WAY better), I'd like to throw in my two cents about this week's SE semifinals.
CO vs. Rowland- Uhhhhh, nobody is beating CO this year. Just aint gonna happen! Strong, disciplined, athletic, hungry, etc, etc, etc. Some Charger fans might even view this postseason as anticlimactic, but hey, it'll still feel good to raise that CIF banner.
DR vs. WC- WC fans are GREAT! I haven't heard any sh** talking from them at all this year....classy group headed by Senor Dan. DR took A TON of crap this year and they've done nothing but suck it up and have continued to progress at the most important time of the year. The biggest adjustment they've made is to cut their passing game in half, and to just line up and play smashmouth football. Great adjustment considering their QB struggles a bit and they have some good RB's and pretty good hogs.
As far as this weeks game is concerned I REALLY like DR here. Their new approach will be key this Friday. My concern with WC is that they haven't played the type of competition that DR has played the past two games (although WC also beat SH only 3 weeks ago), and the fact that they gave up 28 points (and at one point were losing) to Burbank, a really second rate team in the SE division, concerns me. Nonetheless, it will certainly be a physical game, and although I believe DR will pull out a victory, it should be a VERY tight game.
After that the CO and DR in the 'ship and CO beats DR for the 2nd time this year.....something my Stangs failed to do.
Good luck to all this Friday!!!

like sgvguy said, its about the team. and who said rosemead havent been getting better since the first time they met? rosemead's team defense will stop monrovia's offense. and FYI 2026 rushing yards averaging 8.85 while williams is averaging 8.74

Wow - Diamond Ranch came to play and South Hills sat back and waited for someone to make a play. Bad showing for the Huskies - that team has a ton of talent, but just didn't seem to have the killer instinct to make a play when it really, really counted... very disappointing end to the year for this team.

Are you an AMAT honk? Big Lou is scared? If CO wants the real respect, they need to start to schedule better. They are for real, don't get me wrong, but they need to play a tougher schedule. What is on the schedule for next year CO?

i think out of all the teams left in the playoffs for the southeast division, west covina has the best chance against charter oak.

Thanks Fred and honestly so are you thats why I felt that I could keep it real with you. Miguel is still to green to grill:
I myself was disappointed with Monrovia's play earlier in the season, but what most teams dont know is that they have awaken a sleeping Giant. That's the reason for me pulling up the stats, This team has improved 150% from Sept. I think that if you were to write an article outlining a great coaching job MADDOX would be a great story. He made some of the Monrovia Faithful believers in his systems and really against all odds. Monrovia never sat down and said what if they went out and got better and better and they are now practicing what they preach. Now just for a point this weekend, TC will beat Paraclete! and I will bring up some fundamental facts to prove it. First of all TC has the discipline and the athletes to compete man for man with Paraclete, TC has a very good defense and if they shut down #14 it's Game over TC's offense will control the game from beginning to end. TC has 3 unsung offensive heroes', Max Ruckle has proven to be quite a competitor and hopefully Miguel will give this kid some ink because when it's all said and done You will wonder why no one has ever heard of this kid. In defense of Monrovia and Rosemead, This game will be a 50/50 toss-up. Throughout Monrovia's playoff history We have seemed to take on all comers and flexed our athletic muscle when it counted I see this game as no different, Maybe you haven't seen Marquise Williams play, but if you think that Tra Sumler is good then you'll think Marquise is Great. Not to take anything away from Sumler (He plays with a lot of emotion) where as Marquise is the most deceptive running back in the area aka Eric Dickerson, very laid back but can hurt you at the most inopportune times. By the way he is on defense as well and his contribution is noticeable. I personally I dont thinks its Ideal for a star running back to go both ways but if they can handle it good luck.

Last Fan,
Interesting point. I too am looking for post by SH fans who have seemed to disappear off the face of the SGV. At least the AMAT faithful came on here after our loss to LBP and took everything the haters had to give and in some cases are still taking it. For as loud as SH was blogging before the game (topdawg, shhs, huskiefan, and many more} they are just as silent after the loss.
As for the DR vs WC game it is hard to go against DR in this one. Based on the games we played against each team I have to think DR will come out on top of this match. Those preleague games against very tough competition are paying off big time in the playoffs. They are battle tested and if they do beat WC it will be a very good match up against CO this time around. To early to predict a winner in that contest.Play them one at a time and congratulations to all the SGV teams still in the hunt. Do us all proud this Friday it's just to bad we have to knock each other out of the picture.

Observant, you're one of the good guys, but realize that I write from an East San Gabriel perspective now, so I rarely write about T.C. or Monrovia. That's Miguel's job. Azusa wasn't a bad pick, you have to admit that. The way they crushed Duarte while Monrovia snuck by them in the first MD Classic with a hurt Canada is why I liked Azusa's chances. Those are facts, not guessing. But as you know, that's why they play the games. I liked San Dimas over Rosemead, but when you fumble four times in the first six minutes and fall behind 27-0, you won't win that often. When I look at comparative scores and head-to-head, there is no logic in picking Monrovia over Rosemead? There is no logic in picking Temple City over Paraclete, either. I realize I haven't seen either of them play, so with what I have to go on. Heck, even Miguel has both RHL teams losing this week.

#54 might be the best Player of the Year in years. Full ride to Air Force Academy?
That's incredible! If your haven't see Diamond Arnch play recently I recommend you get out and see them.
SH/DR was a classic game of wills. Bogan and SH was trying to "will" DR into "knowing their place" ...while DR was trying to "will a victory"...guess who won?
What happened to Bowden. Kid was 25 lbs over weight if not 35. DR's Tackle handled him all night. Straight up. Thought he was an all everything LB? Why the change in size and position?
Deen is FOR REAL. Kid can make all the throws and has an excellent release and compact and quick. cannon arm for sure. Still on almost every pass play he never checks off or does anything but lock onto a receiver. But then he makes ALL TEH THROWS ...most impressive QB I've seen, as a passer that is, in 10 years.
Anyone know where he's going?

CO VS W COV IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP. CO IS THE WINNER OF THAT GAME TOO.
RANCH JUST DOES NOT HAVE THE OFFENSE AND THERE IS THE PSYCHE FACTOR OF CO.
W COV ONLY CHANCE IS CONTROLLING BALL WHOLE GAME AND GET SOME TURNOVERS.
KYLE LENGYELL OF D RANCH DESERVES ALL CIF ALL EVERYTHING OF THE SGV. PLAYS LINEBACKER GREAT AND O LINE AND HAS OVER 4.0. THESE ARE THE KIND OF KIDS THAT WHOULD BE SALUTED!!!!
I must say the S. Hills DR game was awesome. C Deen is the real deal. That young man can flat out pass a football. Kudos to him. Also S hills has very good coaching which is good for 3 to 7 points a game. Their kickoffs alone would give fits to all teams.
The S. Hills players under estimated the Panthers defense especially Lengyel and Bonilla. From what I hear they were to busy smacktalking about over rated and such, well Kyle Lengyel "leng gel" with a one armed sack with 3rd and 13 on a very strong qb deen , my friends that was it. Then they finally try for the first time all night to throw to imu ??? but another of Panthers so called overrated players shut him down for 0 catches the whole night. Game over.
If the Panthers figure out pass patterns that their QB can throw watch out. All night s hills stuffed it but we never saw any tight end seems or slants or nothing.
Great game. If s. hills can find a running back like last years transfer well they will be very very tough.
hats off to all players for a well played exciting valley game. Fred you need to really keep on the articles about playing one another and not avoiding these kind of games.

Fred:
We all have fun on these blogs. Even when you were over at the Star News you seem more determined to get to the facts that back up your claims about who's legit and who isn't. All year long you gave Azusa the Nod about being in your opinion one of the most legit teams in the SGVN even when it came down to playing TC and the results were embarrassing all I am saying is that a great article about how good the Rams really are would have sufficed for the publication they receive from you. You know that I have always been know to stir the pot a little so I chose things that to me and to some other not so vociferous fans seemed to be lacking in the prep pages mainly articles that do highlight some of the areas best players. Race card is really not the issue here either, Its just that in the past we got a feel of who you were talking about on some of the teams that you speak so highly of this year most of the great players remain Faceless. And last but not least, emotions have never been my issue when it comes to a blog, The only person who as ever rattled my feathers on either side of the 605 has been the Original Stang Fan and you must admit that he is probably the smartest blogger on either side on all teams. I haven't forgot about Joe Amat he's a close second along with BigMlover. Race certainly isn't my main point on this blog either it just so happens to be a very curious observation that I as a blogger picked up. Let's just go to work and make this blog tighter with more facts than fiction...thats it Fred. Still Much respect.

We've done well in the playoffs as well with the exception of the Mid-Valley. I was absolutely wrong going with the Montview over the Rio Hondo, and losing San Dimas and Northview wasn't a huge suprise, but you can't win them all.

This match-up ain't about Rb's buddy it's about the whole team.I'm quite sure Monrovia has to be playing a lot better late,at least i would hope so cause I was at the Arcadia game early pre-season,not impressed!
It will boil down to the guys up front and the Cats just don't match up very well against the Panther's.The Qb position Alejandre, will be the whole key and Bueno just don't come close.Williams vs Sumler well this one is a coin toss stat wise, but i'll take #4 any day of the week. Why? Defence!
The kid is a beast at LB and will be the key to the reason why the Panther's win it all!

Observant Cat, you're the one getting way to emotional. These are just picks, and this is a blog, not what we write in the newspaper, you have to separate the two. We're a little more loose in here, trying to have fun with predictions. If you're going to bring up the race card, know what you're talking about, we just had a story on Charter Oak quarterback Chris Allen, an African-American, not to mention we had one on Sumler earlier this year. But I shouldn't have to defend that, you should pay more attention before you bring that up. And in all honesty, I've never even thought about it that way, we write about players we think deserve it the most, period. Never once have I ever said Williams is not legit, or mentioned one bad word about him. What I will say is on paper Monrovia and Williams hasn't beat anyone who I consider real legit, which is all I have to go on. Maybe I'm wrong, we'll find out on Friday. Sumler earned his numbers against teams like South Hills, San Dimas and in their win over Monrovia earlier this year, he was kicked out at halftime and they still won big. Everyone in M-Town knows I was a big 'Cats follower and covered them well when I was the Pas Preps editor, so don't get upset when I have a little fun with this too. I forget the year, but the Monrovia team that was 11-0 and lost to Lompoc in the second-round was the best I've ever seen.

What the... This blog is all about having fun. Fred has offered a number of articles about local kids (most of which were not about Amat players). There was Albert Cid from WC, the QB from Azusa, the offensive line from San Dimas, two big linemen from Northview.... not to mention the giant prep section in the paper prior to the season. Oh, and by the way... these late football games (December) lap over the basketballers... and Fred is a "Prep Sports Editor" not a "Prep Football Editor"... I can honestly say that I've never witnessed any "hate" in any of Fred's pieces and the regular and functional folks who blog here are in no way haters. Myself, CoBro, Joe Amat, Don, etc... have all been very positive toward all the teams in the valley. If someone is picking against your team, you should point out why you think they are wrong (which you did with some states about Summler vs. Williams - good take!)... but throwing down the race card or calling folks "haters" because they might pick against you is just silly and really doesn't do anyone any good... including the team(s) you pull for...

Fred & Just Wondering
Apparently Neither of you have seen the likes of Marquise Williams. Sometimes ignorance is bliss, Ask anyone who has seen him play and compete including Rosemead. Yes it was earlier season and the Cats were just getting their offense together but this is 2.5 months later and these guys have gelled like no other team in the SGVN. Marquise is the 7 leading rusher in the Entire Southern Section of CIF. These Blogs Amaze me with the Hater attitudes that it seems to gloat on. It starts with the articles, Fred as a person I like you but as a writer you're becoming to emotional and letting that get the best of you. If kids on either side of the Valley are doing well then you should reward them with the press they deserve not talk about how they aren't good enough to play against a team that you are convinced are superior. I am willing to bet you any amount of Money that Monrovia will produce Many more D1 Players off of this team than will Rosemead, San Dimas or any other team in the Mid Valley div. But If we had to hear it from you it seems like a chore to give these guys props. What's the use of having a paper if your using it to put the kids that you dont like down. I have yet to see a great story on any of the African American Players Or White Players for that matter on any of your prep pages. I understand times have changed but the fans haven't. Football is a sport that brings all red blooded Americans together to talk mess, cheer for their favorite teams and just plain enjoy the sport. This year you haven't focused on anything but East Vs. West or Bishop Amat now that time has dwindled down to the Playoffs and Most of your favorites aren't around anymore your focus seems to have shifted towards Basketball. I know that this message is tough love but someone had to say it. Observantcat will take the stand. So since no one has ever taken out the time to give props to those who truly deserve them I Will.
STATS:
Rushing Totals to date
Sumler 1766 yrds. 26 td's
Williams 1966 yrds. 24 td's
Receiving Totals to Date:
Sumler 80 yrds 1 td's
Williams 158 yrds 2 td's
Rosemead Team rushing totals to date
2223 yrd's
Monrovia Team rushing totals to date
3497 yrds
QB's
Rosemead Alejandre: 1,950 13 td's
Monrovia Bueno: 1004 10 td's
These are the things that real football fans want to see so that they can make their own conclusions about who may or may not be their choice in a game. Not well this team got lucky, they dont belong here, etc..etc... Football is a sport not an act, these guys are playing for pride and Scholarships not Oscars. With all due respect Fred I just felt the need to point that out, you've created a blog full of whiners who never new what hit their teams until Sat. Morning.
Posted by: observantcat | December 1, 2008 11:09 AM
In all fairness, Freds 80% success rate on the season-199/51- is about the same as Calpreps.com computer predictions.
We contributed to a few of those 51 and I can't remember a blogger taking offense to FJR's picks of OLu or Crespi over the Lancers.
However, it was nice to prove him wrong.
Posted by: Joe Amat | December 1, 2008 11:04 AM
Fred,
It is amazing the ink in your pen is not seeking Union representation or calling for a work stoppage....
or at least seeking a temporary injunction barring you from further predictions.
Tenacity and "never say die" perserverance are entrenched in the FJR DNA, that is a given. Good qualities, without doubt. A lesser man would flee this world and seek a new life somewhere on the desolate Baja peninsula....where accuracy matters only when filleting a pescado and is judged when at day's end you have not severed a finger.
This season, the Robledo Road is cursed with potholes so large - that several team buses have already plunged downward into the abyss and won't be emerging until next August.
Keep slinging my man because eventually one will stick.

I have to admit altho I am pulling for Diamond Ranch and am a outsider looking in I was at their game Friday and they really are not a scoring Machine or does their offense have a good click to it. They scored both TD's on broken plays the one most noticeable was that mad dash scramble and the completed pass that went 67 yard for a TD. What this DR team has is a good run stop Defense and a very good pass rush. Defense win Championships. Enough to contain CO, NEVER!. out of the 4 teams left CO runs up the most points and has a good defense of their own. DR or Rowland just will not be able to score neck and neck with CO. As for WC if they have any chance of beating DR it will have to be by running on them, which will be difficult. Cameron Deen saw the muddy field back first alot against this fierce pass rush of DR's. Camerons short passing game worked and they should have stayed the course with that but going deep only got him sacked. Short Passing game for WC in this game will not work they do not have a Cameron Deen. I am picking CO vs DR in the final but Altho I want the upset to happen CO just scores too much and will be the eventual champ.

Yes, West Covina may win over Diamond Ranch, but that is where the celebration STOPS!!!
Charter Oak will CRUSH them.
Posted by: Football Fan | December 1, 2008 10:28 AM
Well, the predictions are getting more difficult, but there are so few of them, I'm actually working less! Some great efforts this last week by several teams and some poor efforts by really good teams that a lot of people expected to see play some more! It is what it is... so here are my picks...
Charter Oak vs. Rowland - Both of these programs are well coached and have very few weaknesses. They are both big, strong, and fast but I think CO plays slightly better defense and CO plays the best special teams in the valley. They say defense wins championships... and I agree with "them"... CO +14.
West Covina vs. Diamond Ranch - DR is coming off a pretty big upset against South Hills and a win over West Covina seems like it would be an upset as well. The question is, can DR complete two upsets in a row against very good teams? I supose if any team was able to pull it off it would be DR, but I don't see WC missing a beat. They were very strong this past Friday and they should take this one as well. WC +10.
Rosemead vs. Monrovia - Monrovia is one of those blue collar teams that doesn't really do anything flashy... doesn't expect a lot of hype... they just win - week in and week out. On the other sideline is maybe the best offensive unit in the valley behind Tra Summler. I was at the San Dimas vs. Rosemead game and the Panthers looked really strong. They made very few mistakes. They took care of the ball and Summler is all that they say he is... great runner and a very good defender. It would take a lot more effort for Monrovia to beat Rosemead than it will for Rosemead to beat Monrovia. I like RHS +21.
Paraclete vs. Temple City - I got ripped for picking Paraclete over Northview this last week... but the Spirits can play great defense (I love their name... the Spirits). Temple City is a team that relys on pace and ball control while Paraclete, even though undersized a little, just wears teams down. I like Paraclete here +10... it will be a low scoring affair.
Rancho Cucamonga vs. Cajon - RC has been great all year while Cajon has surged during league and the play offs. I've said on several occasions that Cajon is a black horse that might take it all. They are very physical and enjoy excellent team speed. I'm gonna call for an upset here... CHS +7
Upland vs. Los Osos - Without a doubt the game of the week here. Two great teams playing their best football of the season. Upland has an all-everything QB that is headed to Stanford next year... but Los Osos has a tremendous defense.... push will indeed meet shove! I like Los Osos +3.
So the finals look like this...
Charter Oak vs. West Covina
Rosemead vs. Paraclete
Los Osos vs. Cajon
I'll have predictions on these games next week. Stay safe and play hard...
