Who's next on Breaking News?

Now that former Los Altos coach Greg Gano is at Damien, whats the word on the coaching vacancies at Wilson and La Puente, where Greg Hoyd and Ray Hernandez have resigned? With Dave Merrill retiring from his longtime A.D. position at Wilson to join Gano's staff, both Hacienda Heights school's are looking for Athletic Director's as well. If you know who's next in line, break it here.

Mustain? HH would be lucky if he came back but he can't do it due to lack of funds. He works in a great district and couldn't come back to HH. We would love to have him, but he isn't the guy.

It looks like it is Brian Mustain. At least this is who they are talking about. This is the guy Merrill has been working on getting over to Wilson. I believe he has ties back to the glory days at Wilson. He lives in Whittier and his last job was at Beckman High School in Irvine. He runs the single wing like the championship teams of old at Wilson High. Once this is announced and if they can get the rest of the pieces I personally see the future looking good over at Wilson.

are we talking about Brian Mustain?

Maybe the principal deligated the actual search/interview process to Merrill... I wouldn't know one way or the other. It's still ultimately the responsibility of the principal, though. That's the way it works at Wilson, LA, or any other public school.

Hey, though... hopefully you're right and the Willies can attract a first rate staff in spite of their talent, district, and community issues.

Wilson Parent said:

Jhykron,

Merrill has announced to the school that he is hiring the next head football coach at Wilson. The principal at Wilson realizes that Merrill is more qualified to do the hiring. So yes Merrill is responsible for hiring the next head football coach at Wilson. If this hire goes as planned, Los Altos is going to have some major recruiting issues in the future. I think everyone in the Heights knows what I am talking about.

What always gets me is people who think the athletic director of a public high school has much do with who gets hired. This isn't the NCAA, it doesn't work that way.

Here's an idea... instead of getting on Merril, who hasn't had much to do with -any- of the last 3 Wilson hires, maybe try taking your concern to the real person with the power to make that decision... the principal.

Thank the Lord, the Wilson snack bar crew is finally getting what they want: a full crew of kiddie ball coaches for the big boys. Wheeeee!

The only thing left now is to move 'em over to the Montview.

Isn't that the Pop Warner bunch?

Wilson Parent said:

The rumor at the school is that Merrill is set on getting the freshmen staff back to coach varsity. The head coach he is getting is one of the coaches from back in the 80's when they won the championship. We want that same freshmen staff from last year also but to run the whole program, well so does Merrill but they can't be on campus fulltime. Parents have approached Merrill and told him that they plan on leaving unless they bring that freshmen staff back. Many of the kids that didn't play this year due to the coaching said they will come back if Merrill makes the correct choice. Since this Damien issue came up two weeks ago, Merrill has done nothing

Valley Obs. & Smullen,

Lucas is a great guy and as you said, extremely organized. But what evidence do you have that he cares about all sports? In my opinion, you AD should not be associated with any individual sport. Just too much chance of favoritism.

Jeff is a great guy, but when push comes to shove, he isn't gonna make the tough sacrifice call for Basketball. Just like Gano always favored football. Just natural.

Terry Smullen said:

Amen to that, I'll give him my vote...NO PROBLEMO!!!

D

The next AD at Los Altos should be Jeff Lucas. He is there boys basketball coach and is very organized and cares about all sports.

Valley Observer,

No. Sorry, but no, that isn't how this works. For example, I wouldn't expect Glendora to hire a football guy for an AD.

Valley observer,
it is exactly that attitude "he's cares about all sports" which is going to doom one of the Valley's biggest traditions forever! That AYSO/suburban co-ed sports league, everyone get's a trophy way of thinking that has damaged the SGV sports scene, primarily football.
