Hoops Postgame: Nogales looks unstoppable

Above: Nogales’ Randal Guillory scoring two of his 18 points in Nogales’ 82-61 victory over Walnut on Friday.

Walnut High School’s impressive boys basketball resume included the championship of the Arroyo tournament, and victories over Bishop Amat, JSerra and West Covina. The Mustangs brought an eight-game winning streak to defending San Antonio League champion Nogales on Friday in hopes of taking the next big step. But it was Nogales that stomped all over the Mustangs, leading by as many as 36 points before settling on an 82-61 victory to improve to 15-5 and 2-0 in the San Antonio while the Mustangs dropped to 14-3 and 1-1. The Mustangs figured to have problems with the Mustangs’ size, particularly against 6-foot-5 senior Randal Guillory, who finished with 18 points. But when the Nobles are draining 3-pointers, and they buried 14-of-25 attempts, they’re nearly impossible to keep pace with. Aaron De Anda nailed three 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 22 points, and sixth-man Trevon Smith knocked in four 3-pointers to finish with 18 points.
