BHoops: Chino Hills knocks off Glendora

There was no shortage of defense Wednesday, including the Chino Hills High School boys basketball team’s step toward defending its Sierra League title. The Huskies preserved their undefeated league record and tarnished Glendora’s with a gritty 61-51 victory over the visiting Tartans. While Glendora (14-6, 2-1) held Chino Hills leading scorer Derek Brown to eight points, the supporting cast for the Huskies, ranked No. 4 in CIF-SS Division I-A, mustered plenty of offense.

Six-foot-5 forward Greg Giron, one of three Huskies in double figures, led the way with 11 points and 10 rebounds. His three-point play with 1:04 to play gave Chino Hills (16-5, 3-0) a 15-point lead before a meaningless Glendora run combined with several missed free throws in the waning seconds made the game appear closer than it really was.
Despite seven league games left to play, first place at this point is far from meaningless, according to Glendora coach Mike LeDuc.
“Yeah, of course it means something,” he said. “The truth is everybody wants to be undefeated at this point. And the best team is.” Chino Hills, which lost to Glendora in its first meeting last season before reeling off a 12-game winning streak to finish the regular season, was careful not to place too much emphasis on Wednesday’s result, win or lose. Kosmond Russell, the Tartans’ leading scorer, was held to three field goals until a 3-pointer with nine seconds to play. He and Calvin Smith, who average a combined 34 points, scored 11 each and were the only Glendora players in double figures.
