Breaking News: Zavala going to Wilson

Wilson High School appears close to naming Northview High defensive coordinator Brian Zavala as its next head football coach. Zavala would replace Greg Hoyd, who resigned after one year and a 1-9 record. Neither Wilson athletic director Dave Merrill nor Zavala can comment until the Hacienda-La Puente Unified School District finishes the necessary paperwork and background checks, which are expected to be finalized soon.
Hoyd, who butted heads with the school’s boosters and administration, was not a San Gabriel Valley product and never that well-received. Zavala, meanwhile, brings a wealth of experience.
He’s been an assistant for 11 years and previously was with El Rancho and Rosemead before becoming the Vikings’ defensive coordinator for coach Jim Arellanes the past three years. Northview had one of the area’s best defensive teams in 2008, which led to a Valle Vista League title and quarterfinal appearance in the CIF-SS Mid-Valley Division playoffs. The Vikings allowed an average of just 14 points a game and held opponents to less than 10 points in eight games.
Zavala is a 1993 graduate of Temple City and was an all-conference linebacker at the University of La Verne, where he earned a B.S. degree in movement sports science and a M.A. degree in education. “Brian and I were together at El Rancho and Rosemead and came here (Northview) together,” Arellanes said. “I know he’s wanted this (head coach) for a long time and it will be a huge loss to our program. He’s done so much behind the scenes and I really leaned on him and learned from him also.” After all the turmoil the Wilson football program went through this past season, Arellanes said the Wilson football community should be proud.
“They’re (Wilson) getting a hard-working coach and an excellent motivator,” Arellanes said. “I know he will do everything he can to right the ship. He’s very well organized, prepared, and the kids absolutely love him because he’s such a great motivator.”
