Breaking News: South Hills hosting Tesoro

| | Comments (81) |

Just when you thought South Hills was afraid of playing the big-time heavyweights, coach Steve Bogan surprises everyone with this announcement. Because of the state of the Duarte High School football program, the Huskies have dropped their week three game with the Falcons for a mammoth game against Tesoro at Covina District Field in the middle of September. This is the same Tesoro that lost to Long Beach Poly in the Pac-5 championship, and should put to rest any kind of thought that South Hills is afraid to take on the big boys. Charter Oak, now it's your turn. Mission Viejo or Bishop Amat will do.

Coach Bogan shown living it up on his wave runner, showed his competitiveness as well by signing a big-time contract to host Tesoro.

Husky Fan,

Couldnt agree with you more... Our defense is going to be solid this coming season, wouldnt be surprised if half of them r first team all leaguers and we get several first team all CIF, maybe 1 or 2 all state... Once bogan gets the booth kid ready and he becomes 100%, it should be a hell of a season...

Husky Fan said:

I think this season for the Huskies is going to be one of there best, especially for the defense. Cant wait to see that one Amat transfer Rayes Barrera #34 play again. I can bet you nothing will get up that middle. There defense will be total lock down with Barrera leading the team.

Walnut Fan,

Sry bout that I just dont recall any RB from Walnut doing so well against the huskies... All I remember is our tiny little back #22, playing only in the second half cuz our senior got hurt... 13 Carries 128 yrds and a T.D. I'd take Ricky Johnson of W.C. over ur RB Rhodes... That kid has great moves...

Walnut Fan said:

Huskie,

I think you forgot about Leonard Rhodes of Walnut. He will be the best RB in the San Antonio next year.

Centennial(scrimmage), La Habra, Tesoro, Oaks Cristian and then League... The Huskies r gonna be well prepared for C.I.F. next season... Bogan will properly prepare the Booth kid for the coming season, and with our loaded defense coming back... Our stud running back and wide recievers... Team looks like its gonna come together really good... With Deen leaving it could be Booth and the Rowland QB tops in our league... Booth will have the best recieving core in the valley to throw too... Also with Stansell graduating, our RB could come out on top in our league and maybe in the SGV, watch out Muema... "Jeremy" I dont think he'll go back to LA or leave to WC he seems to love it at SH, and we love him too!!! GOOD LUCK IN THE 09 SEASON HUSKIES!!!

ConqAlum,

You been a little out of touch. His dad will be coaching the db's at LaVern Lutheran next year. According to my source he is a good db coach. Was a fish out of water coaching the freshmen squad.

ConqAlum said:

Too bad Bobby can't take his deadwood father up to Laverne with him.

I actually sent AD/Coach Merrill an email suggesting he contact Jimmy Nolan about the Wilson job. Don't think Jimmy's interested in working in the SGV ghetto though, and he's just expanded his training days to six days a week, including three in South Orange County. Don't know about his play calling, but you wont' find a better motivator in all of Socal.

Heights Parent said:

Jeremy,

Surprise, surprise...

You sure do know a lot about the Heights, that one surprised me. LaVern Lutheran is a drive but parents are willing to make the drive in the best interest of their kids. Your child gets a private education and arguable the best training in the valley. I am aware of a few other parents that are concerning LaVern Lutheran, these kids are involved in other local sports and they aren’t currently attending LA.

Jeremy said:

Heights Parent,

It sure helps when your schools coach is an athletic trainer. The guy is going to develope his talent.

BTW, "here is a crazy-but wait and do some research you judge notion". If in fact LA doesn't over achieve, and there is a coach search, I have a GREAT canidate to nominate, especially in terms of track record and player developement: Jimmy Nolan! aka Mr. Speed Kills.

Heights Parent said:

Jeremy,

I understand now. The three of them are all pretty good players. Booth is a big kid and has a big arm. I understand why he left based on the quarterbacks that were at LA he would have only started his senior year.

You know honestly these kids need to do what is best for them not the program. The program is going to what is best for the program not the player. Loyalty goes both ways and at LA based on history there is no loyalty. Two kids already transferred out to LaVern Lutheran during the semester break. Also their best freshmen back transferred out to Wilson. A few more sophomores will be transferring out in the next couple of days.

Most of the incoming students are looking at the private option a few may go to Wilson according the parents depending on the new hire, no parent are talking about LA. Bishop Amat and LaVern Lutheran are the two top schools that are drawing the local talent. LaVern Lutheran will be playing 11 man ball next year with a very young and talent team. They have a real shot at a state championship; they are that good.

Jeremy said:

Yeah, I saw J.G.#22 in those ugly green uniforms. They (SH) should go back to gold pants.

Jeremy said:

Heights Parent,

No, what I meant or said was, that J.G. didn't 'follow' Booth and co., he wasn't part of a pre-meditated plan to go to S.H., and that he in fact preffered to play with his cousin at WestCo if he had to transfer at all, which he did.

I saw him twice this year... damn, wish he was still at LA.

Heights Parent said:

Jeremy,

You are wrong on the running back. I checked the rooster and Jordon did play on South Hills varsity team this year. He does have a cousin that plays on WC. 64 carries for 434 years as a sophmore at South Hills.

Joe Amat said:

I'm just sayin'...a package may have been desired but I'm pretty sure Papa Booth would not have made the move if there weren't some "assurances" of PT. It will be interesting to see how that pans out.

Jeremy said:

South Hills QB?,

The stud RB from LA didn't follow Aino or the Booths' to SH. He moved from LP to West Covina. He actually didn't want to leave LA in the first place, but when the decision came to transfer, he actually wanted to attend West Covina, but district lines came in to play in that situation. He has a cousin that plays at WC.

South Hills QB? said:

Joe Amat,

When Booth came over he brought a stud running back and a stud linemen from that LA team. The talk around the team is they wanted the other kids so they took the package. If you know what I mean.

Joe Amat said:

I gotta think the Booth kid from Los Altos is penciled in to be the QB at South Hills, no?

My thought is they had a choice in where to transfer and probably chose SH because there was a really good chance he'd have two years behind center. If that wasn't the case - I don't think they transfer there and end up somewhere else. JMO.

You know, I have to be honest with you folks in here. This Game against Tesoro is really huge in my book.

I mean, it really is a big deal for this program, and to tell you the truth, if Amat is playing a turkey that week, im gonna go to that game instead.

I just hope that this game is scheduled for a Thursday night instead of on a Friday, that way I won't have to miss out on the Amat game that week (and in so doing, I can piss off old 73 with my "notes on Amat" collum that Bud Furillo and I write after each and every game).

Ha ha, just kidding 73, dont get those chonies up in arms there big guy :)

Los Al,

That was the point of my posting those comments that I heard from that particular player. All that Gano cared about was a pretty record and rings! In that case I bet he'd love to have the Duarte job, then again he did go to the Big fish in the little pond that is: Damien, the chunky fourth grader picking on the third graders. I know what some of you may say, but with adequate coaching they will dominate, so I guess Gano is without a job in two years.

p.s. We never said that we were Los Al, although the uniforms from the first Gano team would say other wise, however, we are LA!!!

los alamitos football...the real Los Al said:

Bishop Amat is not the only PAC-5 team that Gano and Los Altos could have scheduled.

Gano never scheduled a Pac-5 powerhouse or equivalent. Even if it were true that Bishop Amat refused to play Los Altos, Gano failed to schedule up anyways.

Gano built his reputation by beating up San Gabriel Valley teams year after year. It's no wonder he had a fantastic coaching record.

Anyone remember the last time Los Altos scheduled a real powerhouse?

Yeah I don't either...

Has anyone watched that BA video where they played Crespi? They really do take their football seriously over there. I dont blame Charter Oak for not scheduling them. I knew BA was good but that is Crespi. Lots of people hate on BA but that video was cool.

New York
If you check out Cal Preps, you'll see that Tesoro is a much better
team now than in the McD
years, the year Tesoro played Covina [05] they were 13 & 1 but their schedule was much easier than the Tesoro of today, when they faced their only D1 team that year, San Clemente crushed them 44 to 10, & San Clemente was a little better than average for a Pac 5 team.
This year Tesoro rolled through the Pac 5 heavyweights with wins over Mission Viejo, San Clemente, Los Alamitos,
Mater Dei & Orange Lutheran.

GRI,

Yeah, I acted the fool. I thought that I was defending someone who bled blue, white, and red. However, I attended my first practice since the late 90's during the summer sessions on '07. I immediately saw some things that were not only different, but very wrong. The practices were poorly ran and devoid of any player development. All three levels were unsatisfactory. Gano not only favored his "star" players, but they weren't required to do much except sshoot the breeze.

I then began to talk to some Gano era players past and present. These players without naming them are:
1- a current South Hills player.
2- a current Freshman.
3- a "star" player from '07.
4- a former two year starter from '02&03.
5- a one year starter from '03.
6- a "star" from '99-'01.
Okay...
*one of them "loves" the program, but wants to transfer to a small private school to recieve better positional coaching.

*would love to be more invovled in the program, but doesn't feel welcomed by Gano(September '06) This guy would have greatly benifited the program.

*Came to LA for more exposure, because LA has tradition and Gano is "hooked up"; "I want my brother to play here".

*"na, I ddnt want to leave..." "I wish I wuz still there..." "I was looking fwd to playin for coach A..."(October '08)

*Gano is an (censored), unless, you are one his stars". "Yeah, he plays dirty" when asked about 'how' he recruits. He always would eat and just eat, then get up and walk out of the restaurant"-in reference to pre-game meals. "I feel no loyalty toward him."

*"I played for the tradition at LA, not him(refering to Gano)..." "We wanted to play up, like against LB Poly or Mater Dei... I definitely wanted a piece of Bishop, but they(staff) told us that they were booked."
I won't say who said what, but take a guess, I'm sure ya'll can deciefer who may be who.

I violated my one big rule about being partisan to a coach, which is why I wasn't attending practices, and I'll NEVER be part of the sideline mafia, because no matter who is in charge down there, the door is always open for them to leave, so I don't want to get too chummy or feel any sense of false loyalty, because my program ALWAYS comes first over any coach.

My apologies GRI. Eee-haa!

Husky Pride said:

Aino,Bevel,Griffin,Nonu,Roddy,Umodu, and Vaughns better have there team ready and in shape, the laziness that last years team brought will not cut it. If they want to even make it a game these 7 better get their team going. That and they better find a quarterback!

GRI said:

The one thing I will say about Jeremy is he saw the light. One of the local high school coaches was talking to me about the blogs and Jeremy a couple of weeks ago. He asked me is that the same Jeremy that was all over GRI a couple of years ago. I answered, yes but Jeremy now see’s Gano for what he is. To Gano it isn't about the program it's about Gano. To Gano the kids are a tool to the championship. If you are one of his superstars he is going to take care of you, and I mean take care.

I remember one year I think over 75% of the starters were recruited upper classmen. This year’s quarterback is the first quarterback since Coach A to start at LA that worked his way through the program. O I forgot this wasn’t a Gano coached team. I believe Coach A is the only quarterback to start in the Gano era that actually played freshmen ball at LA. One more interesting fact about the Gano era, this year’s team was just about all home grown talent and went 1-9. Coach A is taking the heat for that record, but these kids are all Gano coached kids that Coach A had a couple of months to work with. I guess Gano picked a good time, to need a break. Like I always said Gano can’t coach, but he isn’t stupid.

sgvfootballfan said:

Jeremy
I think Gano just feels that their is nothing left in the LA area for him?coaches like him are hard to replace.Kids want to go to a place were they can get noticed and right now LA is not a high profile football school anymore, high school football is a big business now and parents are doing everything they can to get that edge.LA has to make coaching change write away to a high profile quality coach to keep the better players in town.

reality czech said:

Sorry- had to!

Don said:

Jeremy makes some very good points here. At one time, Los Altos was THE “football magnet”, (public school division), on their side of town. That, at least for now is done. Improved programs in the Del Rio League as well as emerging programs like Diamond Ranch have taken up the slack.

Parents still have the Charter Oak or South Hills options but I wouldn't be surprised to see talented kids, looking for attention, from South of the San Jose's at schools like La Serna, Pioneer, and CalHi for the next couple of years. The very best may even look to La Habra if they can play at that level.

Jeremy said:

sgvfootballfan,

"It doesn't matter if you won twenty cif championships what matters is what you can do for me tomorrow!!!"

Read what I said closer, that was my point pertaining to CO and DRanch, and being competitive rather than sporting multiple rings.

Also, you are wrong about LA, there is no "writing" on any wall. For one, LA's demographics are identical to DB' or Wilson's. Is there a resemblance? Yes, there is, I won't deny that, but not to the T. Then agian, have you ever stepped on to the DR campus? That isn't what matters.

LA traditionally has been able to pull talent from West Covina, La Puente, Covina, Whittier, El Monte, Pico Rivera, Chino Hills, Diamond Bar, and believe me I could go on, there is more.
One significant difference between LA and your comparative figure Diamond Bar is that LA still has the name recognition and appeal to get a reputable coach.

Don't forget another thing, you're not in the LA family, you don't know what happened, or why. I do, and I saw this coming two years prior. Gano thinks that he is bigger than LA, well he's not.

sgvfootballfan said:

Jeremy
Gano left LA for the same reason Terry Roche left Diamond Bar.The writing is on the wall. That's the real reason.Get over it.It doesn't matter if you won twenty cif championships what matters is what you can do for me tomorrow!!!

Jeremy said:

rgd2626,

I know that you don't want to hear from me, but I have to say, that for one, I can not speak for Bogan, but as for Gano, maybe that is part of his problem. Perhaps Gano SHOULD care atleast a little bit more of what certain people think, such as prospective athletes and the parents of, and especially the people who SUPPORT his prgram. I mean after all, it was that very attitude of 'not' caring that put the LA program in it's current state. He did that. We have more rings than CO, and DRanch has none, but they are still getting athletes and remain competitive.

Suppose Bruce Rollison, John Barnes, Steve Hagerty didn't "care" what people thought of their schedule? Those are the people to take your cues from, not a coward who recruits seniors, and leaves a program out to dry with an inexperienced coach to fill his place while he looks elsewhere.

freddie j. said:

So. Hills do you still have La Habra on your schedule?. Tesoro is no La Habra they are better. Overall good call to play win or lose it will prepare you for that tough San Antonio league and beyond. CO needs to follow suit and line up a pac 5 big dog. It is obvious they do not want a Amat show down but pick a pac5 school to play, as one poster said it best Layton set the standard and it got him far last year. Losing a game to a bigger and better opponent helps you down the line as you saw in DR last year. Step it up CO, SH did. Man crush on Bogan was funny. Are you guys saying what I think your saying?

I don’t recall what Charter Oaks open dates were for football next year, however, I just read in the Times that Notre Dame is scrambling to fill at least 3 open dates in their football schedule for next year.

Those dates include weeks two, four and five, and that’s because Anahiem servite dropped them from their schedule.

Interesting.

Anyway, the point here is that the pundits have been clamoring for Charter Oak to play a quality opponent because of the fact that they seem to be dodging Amat.

Here is a great opportunity for them to do step up and show the SGV just how good they are without playing Amat in a game.

A game such as that would go along way to establish their claim (along with the SGV Tribunes) as being the top team in the Valley.

Now, of course, this thread is all about South Hills, but Charter Oaks, come on now…
