Football: 2009 Top Ten
As we dive into another football off-season, eventually we'll discuss the best players returning at each position, go over team-by-team schedules and analysis, and keep you up to speed on the latest "Breaking News," with schools like La Puente and Wilson yet to fill their coaching vacancies. But first, here's a guess at how next year's top ten will look.

1. Charter Oak -- Muema, Golden, Thropay and coaching staff in place
2. Bishop Amat -- Won't be as good as 2008, but belongs at No. 2
3. West Covina -- Johnson and Johnson are back at QB and RB.
4. Rowland -- QB Michael Ball is only a junior -- dangerous.
5. Glendora - Have to replace Kaluzny, but all other pieces in place
6. South Hills -- Need to replace Deen, but lots of all-league underclassmen back
7. Diamond Ranch -- They slip because of so many graduating starters, but still tough
8. Damien - Schedule is tough, but Gano and staff gets 'em through it.
9. Rosemead -- Even without Sumler, Alejandre, they play defense.
10. Duarte - Along with Monrovia, could be contenders in Mid-Valley. Falcons return RB Jordan Canada.

I've said it once and I will say it again, South Hills will have the strongest defence in the league. With Rayes Barrera #34 leading the defence there is no stopping them. But I do have to agree they do need a QB, from what I hear what they have right now is all that great. I guess we will have to see.
wow!! duarte actually ranked for football in a preseaon poll??
thats a shocker!!
but finally !!
BEAT THE MONROVIA P****CATS THIS TIME
What a year Gano and Los Altos would have had without the devastating loses of Mc Bride, Rodriguez and Contreras.
Dude youre a hater and nothing more.
Give it a rest...or at least start a new tune.
Gano = HOPE,
Talking about stats have you every seen Gano's stats when he isn't loaded with talent to cover up the weak coaching. I am aware of many people that have played for the man. They don't have very nice things to say about him. Most parents, kids and sports writers (Fred) haven't been involved in a well coached program so they have nothing to compare him to other than he wins games. When Despain was at LA they won games and were nationally rank. Why do you think Gano left LA, he saw the writing on the walls. They had no talent coming in and with his coaching ability the team had no chance. LA was 4-6 Gano's last year. This year they were 1-9 and next years team will be a little better another 4-6(?) after that based on the talent pool in the area ,I can easily see another three years of 1-9's. That is why Gano left LA, not because he needed to recharge his batteries. He didn't even take a year off it was 8 months before he jumped ship. Gano knows that he will be able to win games at Damien with the talent they have.
The one major road block that Gano is going to have to deal with is the entrance exam at Damien. You have to pass that exam to entry the school. Damien is also not going to allow the games that Gano played over at LA. I can't see any of the players taking off a month or two of school but still attending practice and games, I just don't see that happening at Damien. Is Gano going to be able to get those stud players with low income and low test scores into the program over at Damien? I am personally aware of one kid that Gano is working on, there is no way this kid is going to pass the entrance exam and his family doesn't have the money to pay for the Damien education. Is the administration going to allow this kid to transfer over, time will tell.
Coach ...ummm sorry but your premise is wrong. At Damien there are very few "football" eduacted parents. Lawyers, Doctors, former well do do real estae people but "football" wise ..it's a joke.
Most glaze over when you say..."DOUBLE TIGHT" or "Cover TWO"...so I'm not sure what your agenda is but Gano is a Stud Caoch. His record prove sit and his former players CONFIRM it.
Fair is a STUD from jump and the rest of the assembled staff makes the former staff look a little suspect at best.
Ever woneder why so many Damien bloggers hated anyone who said Morrison needed help or the lower level coaches were horrible? becaus ethey KNEW NOTHING ABOUT REAL FOOTBALL!!!!!
Look at what happened thsi year. The players were terribly unprepared and soft and what did that group of parents do? Turn on each other and finally the caoching staff.
Wow. Never saw that coming! You won't see or hear teh Damien crowd of old anymore like you don't hear teh Amat second guessing bloggers anymore. No parents worh his salt is a WIN WIN WIN NUT JOB....we just want quality character coaches who don't play mind games with aprents or kids and may the best man win.
It's about the TEAM. Maybe Gano will have his quirks but only a man with an agenda would question his skill set.
Ever check out the previous staff's credentials?
Gano = HOPE,
You are going to have a rude awakening. Gano's qualities are in recruiting, not coaching. He is very old school when it comes to conditioning and technique. His real knowledge of the game is weak at best. The surprise will be when the typical educated parents that you see in a private school environment start talking football to Gano and find out his real level of knowledge of the game. It is going to be real interesting when he plays teams like Bishop and Rancho Cucamonga these teams have been coached up.
Don’t get me wrong he will win games; he just doesn’t have the skill set to win the big games against the well coached teams. Now if he adds a few more coaches (recruiters) and starts to get the studs then he maybe able to do what he did at LA, win with bruit talent despite the lack of coaching.
CO is #1 in the valley and Utah is #1 in the nation
Damien is in for a culture shock!!!!!
It wll be fun to see tha sea change in Sparta.
Hoefully we get soem new uniforms and teh lower levels can actually LOKK like a quality program instead of a hand me down bunch of jersies
.
No mention of San Dimas or Northview, but Duarte yes?? You've got 2 be kidding me Freddy!!
Damien doesn't belong in the picture, at least not yet..
& DRanch should be higher than 7..
HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL FAN -SECOND toughest schedule in the sgv-and lost to the toughest
diamound ranch panthers will bring it hard next season you watch!!we r dr
your kidding toughest schedual in the sgv and went to the championship game.....7th.....jr class is better than this yrs senior class look out!
fred, nice top ten, co and ghs have alot of talent for next year, im sure ba will reload. if ghs can keep the turnovers from the qb position in control, they can win 8 or 9 games again. defence will be better even though losing stud mike backer, lots of good kids who will be back, and good kids coming up. how many more days till practice starts? we need football at ghs because our baseball team will be under coached again, and our basketball team does not have the talent this year.
wheres Arroyo???
many under class should be contenders!!!
LMAO....
This is a joke again, Uphill we go again!!!
SAT CHUMPS, all of you studs exited the playoffs at the hands of the miramonte league teams. Keep talking because Charter Choke loves to hear it.
Keep doing the curls boys because they really seem to help.
I have to agree i think Walnut will take back the branding iron this year DB will have no offensive and no defensive, all the talent went to different schools last year, and we all know they dont have coaches. But for sure the Marching Band Will kit booty ! Props to the Rowland Coach.. took his team to the playoffs !!
I agree with those predicting another great season for C O. As long as they remain in the SE they ought to be the favorite to win a Division. They will build a D around Smith and Dallen, Clapper and Powell and reload an offense around Muema, Golden, and Rufus. The story of the Spring, (provided Santiago does transfer), ought to be the battle for QB on Covina.
The sad thing, is that it will all be at Division 7 and just like this year, these guys won't get much attention outside the Valley until playoff time.
D-Mo,
I've gotta agree with you about Powell. I hadn't heard much about him with all the talk about Allen, Muema, and the big boys, but when I saw him I really liked the way he played. I'd suspect he'd step up to have a great season.
CO haters - come one, come all. Don't underestimate the Charger weight room. It will produce a new O-line to go with our returning skill players, AND one of the finest coaching staffs around (oh you already know that).
Don't forget #9, either. AJ Powell is a stud and a fine young man. He will be a great leader for the '09 Chargers.
if CO gets an o-line together they could be better then last years team
and S.A.L. has not got a win aginst CO since 04 so lets just stop that rant
You say "reload" I say "rebuild"! How is Charter Oak ranked #1 when they have to replace almost their entire offense. The reincarnation of Allen, Perri, Rrycraw, and Williams including their offensive line cannot be duplicated on either side of the ball. Your talking about P.O.Y.'s in league, the Valley, and C.I.F., and first team players also in each of those categories. In addition, the team may live on past glory instead of lead towards future fame. I rank them only ahead of Rosemead and Duarte. The overachievers will become underachievers because the rest of us in the Valley already have been in the weight room for over a month now when they were still playing and healing after the playoffs. Personally, at least four teams from the San Antonio league beat them next year. Charter Oak your reign is over and we are going to rain on your parade!
Hey Fred! What about a thread about upcoming baseball season, call all the coachs and see who they name as there big returners,& their up and comers! Most of all who their big pitchers will be this season....BASEBALL is right around the corner! football is a whole YEAR away....come on Fred!
2009 Again C.O. will be the best!!! Everyone else is 2nd best!!!
Everyone loves a list, and predictions, prognostication, mainly so they can disagree.
Here are a couple of predictions for this thread..
One, the usual suspects will be on to tell us “no worries” when it comes to replacing their graduating stars like Deen, Kaluzny, or Sumler. They all will have a kid from the Frosh or JV squad in mind who is a can't miss.
Two, there will be from some, a hue and cry about their local favorite getting short shrift on the blog, then, a couple of these guys will argue with each other about some bit of business of little general interest with an extraordinary amount of passion. The Walnut, Wilson, and Diamond Bar wonks are really good at this.
Three, somebody will come on to criticize poor ole Fredo for sucking up to Amat or C O, failing to recognize that without the give and take from the fans, (and detractors), of those two schools, this little bit of web heaven would have dried up three years ago.
Gotta love a list.
I too have a somewhat optimistic view of the upcoming season for Walnut. There is the need to address the line, most if not all were seniors, but the skill positions were mostly underclassmen. Hopefully, we can beat DB and bring that Branding Iron back home this year.
I also think that we have another great chance to make the playoffs.
Walnut returns a Solid Running back in Rhodes, their starting QB Peralta is back , most of their key players are soon to be Seniors. This will be one of the better Walnut teams coming out this season. I would not be surprised to see them crack the Tribune top 10 by week 2. They have the team that can compete to the top spot of the San Antonio this year.
