UPDATED: Temple City fires Randy Backus

This comes from Star-News prep editor Miguel Melendez ...

By Miguel A. Melendez
Staff Writer

TEMPLE CITY -- Temple City High School fired head varsity football coach Randy Backus on Monday, two months after an incident in which school officials said he grabbed a student and cursed at him.

Temple City High athletic director John Van De Veere said the decision to fire Backus was unrelated to the November incident, which did not involve a football player.

"Randy put his hands on a student inappropriately -- not sexually -- and threatened the individual," Van De Veere said. "The way I understand it, Randy came out of the locker room and the kid wanted to go in. As Randy was about to close the door, the kid threw his backpack to hold the door open, and that's when he grabbed the kid and used foul language."

The student involved was 18 at the time but decided not to press charges and was not himself disciplined, school officials said. No police report was filed, although another student did witness the incident.

Backus said he was "greatly disappointed" about his firing after just two seasons as head coach.

"The reasons were not directly given to me," he said. "I requested a meeting last week to talk about these issues and I have not had a meeting. That is why I had not resigned. I was not given a chance to defend myself."

The high school's administrators and the Temple City Unified School District board of trustees made the decision to fire Backus, who has served as a coach at the school for 14 years.

However, Van De Veere said that decision was based on school officials' overall dissatisfaction with Backus' performance as a head coach.

"We want to go on a different direction," Van De Veere said. "We just felt that some things the past two seasons were not exactly what we wanted, both on and off the field.
"It was kind of one of those things where we're asking ourselves if this is the type of person we want leading our football program."

Temple City High Principal Mary Jo Fosselman-King said Backus never spoke to her directly about meeting.

"He didn't make that request with me," she said. "Randy did a lot of great things. I'm just going to (say) that we decided to go in a different direction. I don't want to get into specifics, but I'd be happy to meet with Randy."

Although Backus won't be coaching anymore, he will remain at Temple City as an English teacher, she added.

"They're completely separate," Fosselman-King said.

Following the incident with the student, Backus was put on leave with one game left in the regular season last fall. He did not coach or take part in practices thereafter. The Rams' memorable playoff run ended in the semifinals of the CIF-Southern Section Mid-Valley Division.

Backus was reinstated into his teaching job on Dec. 15 on the condition that he be involved in no other incidents, Van De Veere said.

Backus had been disciplined once previously. School officials held him out of spring practice last year for using foul language, Van De Veere said.

"It was taken out of context," Backus said of that incident. "I did not use profanity this year."

Backus defended his performance as head football coach.

"I had no complaints whatsoever from parents this year in regards to the language. Could I have taken a better job in attendance? Yes. Was there a lack of supervision? No. Was there a lack of discipline? Definitely not -- it is absolutely false," he said.

Van De Veere said Backus was given the option of resigning before his termination.

"We gave him a chance to go out gracefully. Resignation would have been a graceful way to go out."

TC resident..."he's either or"...doesn't sound like you have/know any of the facts

So unless you know learn the facts. Man put his hands on the kid and used foul and abusive language to get "his point across" apparetlt "again" in an agressive manner...and that was wrong.

The fact that it was his second time and was apparently on a short leash...well he made his bed...as the saying goes.

Either way he's gone!

Bad for everyone concerned. Why bag on the kid. After all the "kid" had every right to "press charges"...does that tell you something?

Coach got off easy...all things considered.

The kid involved is the son of a board member or his Mom works for the school district!! The kids goes unpunished. The Coach never had a chance. The kid had no business going to the locker room at that time.

Jeremy,

Obviously your prep football knowledge ends at the junction of the 10 and 605....but that lack of knowledge does not prevent you from babbling on nonetheless. Temple City " a mediocre program" you say?
Temple City has remained highly competitive (CIF semis this year) despite an unquestioned, year after year, progressively dwindling talent pool.
Mediocrity is better observed and commented upon at schools that regularly have a busload of skill players...but can't seem to compete week in and week out. Lose games they should win. Teams that do not improve week by week...or peek when CIF bracket time begins. Undisciplined teams. There are plenty in your field of view. These programs may deserve your tag.

A program and coaching staff that gets the absolute best out of what they have and play fundamentally sound football - that is no "mediocre" football program.

Of course, your comments may prove to be true in 2009 and beyond...as the Admin just canned Randy Backus, the lone veteran coach still promoting old school Ram football. Hopefully the "new direction" the Admin is touting...won't be a GPS course straight at mediocrity.

AZTEC PRIDE,

I've seen MANY MANY Montview/Valle Vista league(1988-1992) games than I CARE to remember. Your teams usually are sloppy soft tacklers, your best RB's are 5'3" 130lb 5 second 40 runners, the passing games are usually B-A-D!! And my lord, your kids can NOT tackle for s**t!
Why is it that Duarte, Gladstone, and years back Ganesha would blow by all you guys? It wasn't size, or a complex and effecient offensive scheme, it was speed, they were the only ones that had it, pure and simple. Then they'd go into the Div 32 playoffs and lose in the first round, just like the rest of you. Why? Your brand of football is TERRIBLE!!

Joe M.

How would you know AZUSA has lost players??? Are you from around the area? One hit wonder, come on JOE, AZUSA has a new Football coach and is a completely different from the last COACH, and a new Baseball coach who is also outstanding!

Why don't you go buy a one hit single, from a music group beter!

Jeremy!

Watch your choice of words their JEREMY!!! Why don't you venture out and come view some games when AZUSA plays football and baseball before you start talking about "BLOWING"!

I see your pattern and your like a little fire starter, your all over place talking stupidity!

AZTEC PRIDE!

LA Parent

Exactly my point:

"Second team all LEAGUE on offense and defense."

Second team in a league that sucks??? Who cares?

And, second team according to who? The SGV Tribune. Oh Lord, give me an F'n break.

A LA freshman team that won league? That's the main reason the Frosh coaches caught so much sh*t last season. They were more worried about winning, then developing player talent. So, the idiot "head" coaches Mr F. & Mr. G played 16-18 kids all season long to win the BIG PRIZE. All at the expense of future "talent". And, who even cares about freshman league champs? Not CIF. They don't even keep record of it. So, nice job fellas. Way to win the race to an unrecognized "trophy".

But seriously, I think you're probably the only person in the SGV who has an issue with: Who's going where, who's coaching where, who's trying to "steal" who, etc...

Just leave the kids alone, and let them enjoy their high school years in peace. Stop filling their heads with NCAA football bullsh*t.

Appreciate them for what they are, not what you want them to be.

Conq. Alum,

Felipe is not a quarterback coach. I watch all year and saw no quarterback coaching out of him. I was personally shocked with the lack of his involvement with the quarterback.

Los Altos should inquire about one of Amats Coaches for the head coaches job. Gallager, DiFiori or Mulville. Felipewas a good player but a good player does not always make a good Head coach. Maybe a QB coach for Felipe but not the lead role.

La Verne Resident,

Interesting factor, Gano is working on bring over his recruiters/coaches. Now can Gano talk the administration into waiving the fees or getting the booster club to pay for these low income kids that can't afford to pay? Some of the kids that Gano is currently recruiting from the Heights can not afford the tuition at Damien. I personally know that for a fact. It is going to be real interesting if Gano runs the program his way. I just don't see the administration and parents allowing Gano to play his games like they did at LA. At LA all the administration worried about was winning, development of the local kids wasn’t their priority. Proof of that is the current situation Coach Aguilera is in, after one season his job is in jeopardy. A season that most feel that he did well considering the talent he had to work with.

It does not matter who Gano steal / recruits / robs?? Damien will have another losing season with Gano. He is no savior over there. They may win a couple of more games but thats about it. Talent level at Damien is no good and in these tough economic times who wants to part with tuition money for Damiens losing football program when you can play at San Dimas Charter Oak or Bonita for free.

Aztec Pride I was talking about football and you lost some players and were a one hit wonder this past season. It will not continue next season. Azusa football becomes the same ol same ol next season. One good season means nothing. Consistancy means everything. Who would dare transfer to Azusa HS. Life is too short already if you know what I mean.

Smell the Coffee,

You have no clue what you are talking about. Yes both programs are weak, but to say they have no talent is just crazy. The top underclassmen player in the Wilson program, who is second team all league on offense and defense and is only a sophmore this year. Gano is going after him, are you going to try and say no talent. Gano is going after one or two of the freshmen on the LA team that won league this year, no talent. I was also told he is going after one or two of the kids on the varisty team. Both teams aren't going anywhere next year we all know that, but they do have talent, they don't have enough talent.

Wilson went 0-10 the worse team in the valley. Had the most talent kid in the valley on their team, in Tim Gilmore. Pull your head out of you a@@, you have no clue what you are talking about.

LA Parent

Take a step back, and really look at what you're worrying about here. CIF football, at LA, or Wilson, is really just a game for the students attending either school. Neither school has any studs worth mentioning. Let's not get our panties in a bunch over whether Gano is going to "rob" the talent of LA. There's no significant talent to be had there to begin with. Did you actually watch any of the teams last year? Both schools are the joke of their Division Seven (Southeastern) League. Nobody in the SGV, or this blog, gives a rats a$$ if you're waiting to hear who Merrill is going to bring in as head coach before deciding to move your kid to Wilson. Your kid, like all the other kids at both schools, are playing for the enjoyment of the game. Not because they're looking for the best coach to get them to the next level. There is no next "football
" level for these LA/Wilson kids. Play four years, have fun, then go to college, or get a job. The only people who think that some of these kids have talent, are the delusional parents (like yourself maybe?). If you think choosing between LA, and Wilson is your road to the NCAA, or NFL, you've lost your mind.
Attention all LA/Wilson parents. If you really think your child has a talent for football, you are doing them a tremendous disservice by enrolling them at either Wilson, or LA. Enroll them in a Division One school in Orange County, or the Inland Empire (maybe even Amat), where they will have the chance to play against the best in Socal. Of course, when they fail, you can always bring them back to the SGV, if you don't mind the laughs behind your back.

Have a wonderful day.

AZTEC PRIDE,

Your division blows, your league is very very weak, and your roster is tiny and pkysically your players are even smaller and slower and can not hit very well.

Try viewing a game outside of an Azusa game, it'll change your perspective, trust me!

Put Azusa in the Miramonte or the Sierra, and your Aztecs get BLOWN out and injured every week, by say an average of one starter lost every other game with an average final score loss of say... 56-0/63-6, etc.

JOE M.

You listed AZUSA dead last on your list? Your out of your mind! AZUSA baseball is about to start, and they went to the second round of the C.I.F playoffs last season and won their League, and have most of the players are returning!

Must I also say AZUSA football lost in the second round of the football playoffs! So I would do a little research before you put your foot in your mouth!

AZTEC PRIDE!

Both LA and Wilson football programs are in trouble. Aguilera has a year under his belt and all he proved is he is over his head and the kids don’t respect him. Sorry to say but based on coaching if I was choice between LA and Wilson today, I would go with Wilson. Yes, Wilson with no head coach. Merrill is doing the hiring this year, not the principal and I am being told he is hiring a real football coach, not a teacher that can coach. Over at LA we know what we got and it doesn’t look good. Fortunately I can wait and see who Wilson hires and then make the decision.

Now as far as kids leaving the program and where they will end up. Most of the kids are waiting to see who will be the new head coach at Wilson others are being approached by Gano about making the move to Damien. I am personally aware of two kids that Gano has approached about making the move. Gano is going to get a few of the kids, but what is more interesting is what is Aguilera coaching staff going to look like when Gano gets done with them. We all know that he has recruited just about all of his staff from two years ago. Don’t get me wrong Gano has a lot to offer these coaches; Damien pays almost double what they are getting at LA. At Damien they are going to compete and LA the only thing they are going to be competing for is the wheel for the next four or five years.

How ironic is it that Gano is on the HLP school district payroll at Los Altos recruiting players from the school to go play at Damien. Los Altos is paying this guy to take their players to Damien. Even more interesting all this work prepping for next year is being paid for by HLP school district

Hey Los Altos, Looking for a coach, hire Randy Backus the jacka--. Los Altos is going through a Verti Exp. and until they figure it out that Felipe is too wet behind the ears and get a more Mature coach then the slide will continue. If you are a freshman or Sophmore parent watching this slide get out while you can. Juniors and Seniors it is tough to move on unless you have a superstar talent and can go anywhere where you can start. As juniors and Seniors most schools will show their loyalty to their players first and then give transfers their look, unless like I said you are a superstar. Gilmore should have left and he didn't and look at the way his senior year went. Right now schools of intrest that are going to have decent years (playoffs) that you should consider transfering to are:
So. Hills
Bishop Amat(playoffs?)
West Covina
Walnut
Charter Oak
Diamond Ranch
St. Paul
La Habra

Schools you do not want to go to unless you want playing time and Campus status as the stud:
La Puente
Workman
Bassett
Rowland
Nogales
Covina
Diamond Bar
Baldwin Park
Azusa

Jeremy,

I am one of those LA parents that is going to make that move. Not sure where we are going to end up but we are making the move. The major issue with LA is the inbreeding when it comes to coaching. The past and current coaching staff has no clue what it takes to really coach these kids up. They have been handed talent for decades so there was no need to coach up the kids. Those days are gone. That is why Gano is gone; he saw the writing on the wall. Gano can only will with a over talented team to compensate for his lack of coaching knowledge. Aguilera is in the same situation that Gano was, lack of coaching. The kids that have been coached up in the pass see what is going on over at LA. The kids that came from weak youth programs (Cougars) or no football experience they buy into this crap that the staff feeds them. Those are the kids that LA is going to keep. Personally I am waiting to see who gets the job at Wilson, St. Paul, ect., before I make my decision. I am not going to have my son waste another year learning nothing and going no where. With the lack of local talent I can only see one school succeeding in the area. LA has the best senior class next year but after that Wilson has the edge on talent for the next two years. Especially based on the kids that I am sure are going to make the move. Sorry to say but based on the current and incoming talent I personally don't see LA turning the program around for at least another four years. That is also why Gano left; he isn't as stupid as he looks.

Amat 04

STFU

Amat04,

What do guys do when they are in each others presence? They swap stories.
I know quite a few people in the Amat family such as former players, coaches, etc. I grew up around two people in particular that are/were members of the coaching staff. specifically, I've known one individual who has been on the coaching staff twice since I was about 8 years-old, and he admits to having quite a fierce locker room demeanor. But, hell that's football.

Exactly...
I'd smack the Fu** out of you when your supposed to know the right answer.

I never knew Temple City was raising a bunch of wussies.

You TC oldtimers have got to be laughing at all these girly men. Can you imagine these girls attempting this crap with "Hitch" he'd throw 'em under the bus and let them rot.

Jeremy,

When has the Amat locker room ever open to the public, How do you know what goes on in the Amat locker room if you attended Los Altos?...Make sense would you. Unless you are a coach that coached at Amat but played at Los Altos. I hardly doubt it tho.

WOW and they kept him on as a English Teacher??

Is that what he teaches. English?

How to use the word Fuc- in as many sentences as possible.

Is "F" a noun or a verb?

ask Randitolla I am sure he will slap the right answer out of you.

Yup typical little league Dad, probably wearing Birkenstocks to practice too!

Jeremy,

I could see a closed door halftime, all team, and a coach a-- chewing using the best of the best words (f-bomb galore)for players and their lack of production on the field. A student trying to get a door open by using his backpack and this coach flips out and goes ape Shi-. Coach (ex-coach) is a loose cannon who thinks the school owes him something and walks the campus like he is king Shi-. The principal did the right thing before he did further damage. This man needs some serious anger management courses. This had nothing to do with football, it had to do with a ego-maniac that needs to pull his head out of his a--. Trust me the pricipal did him a favor in the long run. Charges could have been pressed against him and his reputation could have been damaged in a job loss and a suit. He got off easy. With these priors of his he will strike again. This is not over.

Guys like "Rudy T" are whats wrong today.
This loser and his loser kid probably were the top dogs in their little league then reality set in and by the time RUDY T"s BOYEEE got to high school where Daddy couldn't place him on every All Star team there he get pissed.
Rudy T if you were half the Man Randy Backus was you would have a spine. You're a pathetic excuse for a parent.
Go back to playing jacks with your kid and go shove a half a ton of cotton in his ears so he doesn't hear those big bad terrible words. As a matter of fact have him shove it in his ears so he doesn't have to listen to you come up for every excuse for your misteps in the coaching of your son.
You make me sick RUDY T

P.S. to the LA parents,

I had the Amat option as well. Not insinuating anything illegal, but I was already talking with one of the coaches who I won't name, but he also coaches Baseball and is no longer at Amat. I was pretty much going to have the same J.V./V deal over there. My mother wanted that MORE than anything, but I chose Los Altos.
Bottom line: You are part of a great tradition laden program, remember that. Take it from a kid who had the choice, and chose to be a Conq!

Bleeds blue and gold,

Yeah, that was part of what I was eluding to, the other is just what you see all around that place, an over idealistic sense of suburbia. That place is the capitol of the co-ed league, everyone get's a trophy, be weary of outsiders(boy, are they), soccer mom culture. And all the kids are named Bryce, Kayla, Cole, Tyler, Cameron, etc.

Rudy T.,

Are you serious?
Man, I'm not saying that you are, but you sound like one of those parents that keep their kid in a mediocre program like T.C., but then in the same turn, you'll over hear them say something like: "yeah, we were going to send him to Amat, but..."
Funny thing is, if you can't subjecting your mijo to a litte profanity, then by golly you'd faint at the scene in the Amat locker room during halftime, or where I played: Los Altos.

Bottom line: WORD ARE JUST WORDS!!!! Did you ever play competitive sports?? Do you have a job?? Sh** happens!...

BTW, as a former Wilson to Los Altos transfer, I must tell you LA parents and kids that are considering jumping ship...
1. Aguilar probably won't be back next season anyway, baring that he wins the league or get's past the second round in the playoffs...
2) AND MOST IMPORTANT-
if you hate whiny parents and excessive P.C., you'll HATE Wilson! Oh my, mark my words, a program that isn't accustomed to winning THAT is Wilson and it carries it self that way.
I left a Varsity spot as a sophmore at Wilson to a starting role on the J.V. and a spot on the Varsity bench at LA, and I'd do it again.
Remember, Wilson can get a decent coach, but LA can get a great coach like someone off the Amat staff or heck maybe Roddy or Maggiore. What's another year of pain to a lifetime of PRIDE?!

Randy,

We as adults are accountable for our actions. You screwed up and now you will have to wait to get that type of head coaching position again. Blackballed is what you are. What were you thinking?

Jeremy,

If your reference to Claremont goes back to that Kindergarten Thanksgiving fiasco, you hit the nail on the head. Nowadays all it takes is one crybaby to ruin the show for everyone. We must be living in a parallel universe with all the crap that goes on, UNBELIEVABLE!

He got what he deserved. Maybe he can clean up his aggressive attitude towards students. What his wife wear his big boy pants at home so he has to find his manhood at work. Lots of this cra- happens in all business not just HS. He will still teach so it is not like they canned his A-- outright which they should have. Size yourself to another Adult but you do not choose out or swear at a student. Just by that look on his face in that above picture you can see a-hole- written all over it. He will not stop there he will have other incidents along the way until he gets thrown out. Why wait until he pops again.. they should be done with him before harm is done to someone at this hot tempered, excuse of a man, expense.

Once again, some administration desk jockey imposing their politically correct nonsense on a no-sense solid coach.

Yeah, it could happen in Claremont.

Once again, some administration desk jockey imposing their politically correct nonsense on a no-sense solid coach.

Yeah, it could happen in Claremont.

The writing has been on the wall for YEARS . All these hypersensitive people complaining about the son & or daughter not playing & then ALLOWING them to voice his or her opinion. The MONKEYS are running the circus, and things are going to get WORSE! Mark my words , things are going to get worse! Whatever happened to being SEEN & NOT heard.I know this does not DIRECTLY relate to Coach Backus' firing. Best of Luck to HIM.

Fight On TC
TM

Does Art Carrington still coach at TC?

That is f**k*n' retarded!!

Then again, it is Temple City. Honestly I can see something like this happening in a place like Claremont.

If coaches are getting fired for cursing these days, then you also must believe that Santa Claus is real.

It seems like he pissed off someone in administration and probably a board member.

Wheres the rest of the story?
