Hoops Postgame: Nogales looks unstoppable

| | Comments (51) |

Above: Nogales' Randal Guillory scoring two of his 18 points in Nogales' 82-61 victory over Walnut on Friday.

Walnut High School's impressive boys basketball resume included the championship of the Arroyo tournament, and victories over Bishop Amat, JSerra and West Covina. The Mustangs brought an eight-game winning streak to defending San Antonio League champion Nogales on Friday in hopes of taking the next big step. But it was Nogales that stomped all over the Mustangs, leading by as many as 36 points before settling on an 82-61 victory to improve to 15-5 and 2-0 in the San Antonio while the Mustangs dropped to 14-3 and 1-1. The Mustangs figured to have problems with the Mustangs' size, particularly against 6-foot-5 senior Randal Guillory, who finished with 18 points. But when the Nobles are draining 3-pointers, and they buried 14-of-25 attempts, they're nearly impossible to keep pace with. Aaron De Anda nailed three 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 22 points, and sixth-man Trevon Smith knocked in four 3-pointers to finish with 18 points.

chargerspy,
A lot of our servicemen are of Latino heritage. Keep in mind they are the ones along with others fighting the wars so idiots like you can be safe and pursue the American dream without having to pay your dues . So next time you want to knock Latinos or any other race you should think twice,it's because of their valor you have the freedom to make your assinine statements. In all races there are bad seeds but to generalize a race based on a few bad apples is very narrow minded on your part. But then again we should expect that kind of post from an arrogant person who thinks because of high API scores they are a better class of person. It just goes to show you can have all the brains in world and still be the biggest asshole and you are living proof of that.

DR - BONITA

I thoguht DR would control the entire game with their size, but BONITA did a great job on the inside (Defensively that is) and offensively the 3 from BONITA kept them in the game along with their guard play.

The Rematch should be fun, to bad we do not have the gym size. BTW DR, your hanger is pretty nice (first time there), just wished you guys had a snack bar to go with it.

Good luck Bearcats in The Rematch...

For those who asked what a BEARCAT is, just read the article in ESPN the Magaize, where we are fetured (GO BEARCATS)...

congradulations to Coach LeDuc and his team on the great win today at Los Osos one day MLK event. Glendora edged Colton 75-35. Colton is now 0-16 for the season and after the game LeDuc is trying to schedule Colton to play in next year triple crown opening event. Next sat at APU they have a big game vs Ontario Christian. Next year they may try to play Orangewood Academy or Webb.

The Dranch D1 players showed their skills and made the difference. Bonita guard #10 controlled the game,#25&24played well, Aberanthy played at a level above all. Still DRanch has more weapons and more runs. Rematch should be for the title or share of it.

Wilson Parent,

They dont have talent and wont have talent anymore...The 1st and most important reason why they will continue to suck is that the kids from West Covina and La Puente are not going there anymore...Why? cause they realized that they were buying Foolz Gold. Wilson got lucky and scored on a couple of prize chips from Bishop and lived off that for a couple years then they got struck back to reality...And everyone talks about the JAA kids that won championships and Hacienda Hts. has a good program WRONG! The program everyone is talking about is they POP WARNER program where most of the kids are from La Puente,Whittier,Pico,El Monte,Covina cause none of those citys have POP WARNER they have Junior All American which is like the JV of youth football...The Hacienda Hts Cougars are a joke of a league and are never good...I thought it was a great move to bring POP WARNER to the SGV though cause if u look around alot of bigtime high school (Mater Dei,Los Alamitos,Edison,Santa Margarita) have there local kids wearing there uniforms from age 5...

Bottom line is Wilson is done! And they will never have any kind of success like they use to cause they will just not get the kids...Get use to it pretty soon u will be in the Montview League...

Fact!,

Hacienda Heights isn't that bad, up until last year Los Altos was a powerhouse football team in the area. So, all the local football talent went to Los Altos. It has been that way for decades;

Hacienda Heights.....
Football .....
Los Altos .....

Yes you are correct Wilson would have never won those CIF titles without the BA transfers. Wilson over the last few years has had some good teams, that team that lost to OL in the semi's a few years ago, was good. The team last year was above average, won the first round of the playoffs. What they don't have and won't have in the near future is depth. Depending on the new head coach this team could be competing again in a year or two, they do have talent, they don't have a leader.

Fact! said:

chargerspy,
first off Hacienda hts. is not an asian community and they have more than one gang in the city...2nd the reason u never see an asian at the park playing ball or playing in the street on a bike is cause all they do is stay home and do homework and play WII because there parents are probably from China where u have to go 2 school for 10hrs a day and are not allowed to speak there mind because it is Comunist Country so there parents try to run there household the same...3rd the biggest crime bust during the last couple years were in these so called asian communities where they found about 5 million dollar drug houses...

Truth is if it wasnt for the couple of kids that transfered from Bishop Amat to Wilson to win those couple of CIF titles for them Wilson is just garbage in a ok nice neighborhood...

Get your Facts straight

chargerspy said:

Hey Facts are Facts. You must be from the ghetto because you can't even spell the word thought not (tought). When I see all the top API(Academic Progress Index) scores around the valley they are all in asian communities. Whats the answer! They value their education and it starts from home. Last time I looked all the California Prison systems are filled with cholos and run by the Mexican Mafia! If they want to deal drugs, graffiti, and ruin their community send them to Afghanistan or IraQ. Maybe they can represent their country positively instead of ruining it!

FACTS ARE FACTS said:

chargerspy,
Don't get to comfortable in your Wilson area home because the next knock you may hear is that of an asian gang with a home invasion robbery where they will kill everyone in the house for the reason of robbing you.Sometimes the ghetto is safer than you think because the tought is that no one in the ghetto is worth robbing. How do you like that you prejudice bast_rd.

Joe Amat said:

Morales was the real deal. He and Bill Duffy were the first real "high-flying" ballers in the valley that I remember. Duffy was long and lean but Morales was really well defined and put together like a modern day running back or DB. La Puente HS had a pretty good big man back in those days named Mitchell LeBron

McGuire, Williams, Blow, LeBron, and Rodney Littlepage (Covina).
Where have all the big men gone in the SGV?

boomer said:

oh i know about blow. he would still come around workman when i was there. he'd be at open gym playing too. i also know that we have a cif title win that is not up in our gym. what makes you think i don't know my schools history?

MK_47 said:

DRanch - Bonita I

The better team won, but the Miramonte is far from decided. That will most likely happen on Feb. 4th when these 2 meet again at the friendly confines of the Bonita gym, rather than the airplane hanger at DRanch.

A couple of observations:

1) The 7-point difference was closer than many expected.

2) DRanch has a noticeable size advantage over the Bearcats yet the Bearcats held their own nicely.

3) Bonita's Abernathy & Bennett led in scoring but when the Fassas kid heats up again, it's going to be different.

4) DRanch kept losing the large leads, with the first teamer's in the game, even though the Bearcats couldn't close the deal.

5) After last year's incidents, this year the atmosphere was great & all went well; a rivalry that was loud but everyone behaved, even the adults.

6) DRanch is a very good team. But so is Bonita.

Can't wait for the rematch Feb. 4.

Joe Amat,
thanks for the heads up...I heard that Billy Morales was NO JOKE and he was one of the best players around period and workman put a court in one of the side rooms to the gym just for him...Dave McGuire was a 7ft and Billy Morales use to do the jump ball cause he was a great athlete...But for what its worth i heard Vincent Blow was just a man playing with boys

Joe Amat said:

For what it's worth regarding the Workman (Blow) vs Nogales (Fielder) question... Feilder was a senior at Nogales in 1981, a couple years prior to Blow's great teams (between him and the Billy Morales/Dave McGuire era). Blow actually hit a jumper at the buzzer (or a little after if you ask those who were in attendance !:?) at Amat to defeat the Lancers by a point. He was really very good, as we had a chance to see he and Los Altos' Mike Smith come to Duff Gymnasium back then.

Fielders team had big Randy Downs (6'9" went to Colorado) and Pete Williams who ultimately played in the NBA - along with a "Rambis-type" forward named Paul Togneri who coaches baseball up in Ventura and played briefly in the Seattle Mariners organization as a pitcher. That was a VERY good team and at the same time that Shawn Holiday was at Blair. Shawn is Jrue Holiday's (frosh phenom at UCLA) father. The best athlete was maybe a guy who ended up as a pitcher in the Cardinal organization from Ontario named C.L. Penigar who had crazy hops. I witnessed an impromptu dunk contest at Chino HS with all of the above that was unbelievable.

Fielder was a great ballhandler in a "mini- Magic" kind of way and could dunk with the best of them. His hands were like shovels and because of his "girth" he got into the lane like LeBron does today.

Great athlete, and I wish him the best in turning his life back around a bit after falling on some very hard times.

More later on how Nogales, and legendary coach Mac Pace helped the Lancers succeed in the '80s.

chargerspy,
u r right Workman is in a ugly part of town but so is Bishop Amat,Mater Dei,the Compton Schools and much much others...so b4 u start bumping your gums come to the table with some good FACTS!...just because there is a bunch of lil asians running around at Wilson does not make it a nice school, just becareful driving in the parking lot because we all know how good driving is in that part of town...And the current Featherweight Champion of the WORLD STEVEN LUEVANO is from Workman...

Playallday,
Workman had Vincent Blow who was the main man on the team...and from what i hear Fielder was a good basketball player but i never saw him play

boomer said:

chargerspy,

you need to get your facts straight, if you knew what you were talking about, you'd know that most of the people that live in the surrounding blocks of workman go to schools like los altos, wilson, and bishop amat. grandview, fairgrove, valinda, and sierra vista are suppose to be feeder schools to workman, but they choose to go someplace else. Tim Gilmore from wilson went to grandview, he lives right down the street from workman.

Sierra League said:

Well it certainly looks like this Wednesday's showdown between Chino Hills and the Tartans will be for the title of early favorite in the Sierra. Neither has really been tested in league. Glendora has everyone healthy and looks to be putting it together much like last year. Should be a great game!

chargerspy said:

Hey playallday! Scott Williams who played at North Carolina and went on to play on the Chicago Bulls went to Wilson High school Hacienda Heights. The school on the other side of the tracks! Workman High is in the ghetto with all the cholos! Oh I mean Homeboys! Get your facts straight!

you couldn't tell by the way he dribbles with his head down and jumps without having a plan. he's over weight and claerly not as good as latham who is six three and can actually play the game.

what a joke!

lost to glendora by 20 and chino hills by 17 and this was the best group of basketball players dunn has ever assembled?

latham for president!

So I went to the Workman-Duarte game to get my first look at Cesar Guerrero in person.

I'm very impressed with his talent and the downsides to his game are things you'd expect from a sophmore in high school.

And yes I must also take into account that Duarte might be the worst high school basketball team I've seen in 25 years of watching the sport. But I think they kid is really damn good.

DBFan said:

Hey Glendora honks hope someone scouted Colton last night as they can ball. The final score was Cajon 91 Colton 22. Game was tied until the opening tipoff. Colton aka detroit lions are 0-15. They could go 0 for the season as the SAL teams will all be favored vs the jackets. Glendora should get Colton to play them in the triple crown next year.

playallday,
Workman was the team to beat back then...the beat Nogales in CIF

Wow Glendora is playing another powerfull team on MLK day monday when they face the mighty yellowjackets of Colton who are 0-15. They opened the season in their triple crown event by beating mighty Ganesha 83-31. Next sat they play Ontario Christian at APU. If they are looking for teams next year they may as well play girls teams in these one day events.
