Anything and anyone you want to talk about

This thread is for all you high school baseball and softball junkies to talk about anything and anyone you want. We're getting closer, I'll start calling coaches next week about season previews. Anyone got a good idea for a cover shot to lead the baseball spring preview story? Also looking for a softball cover shot.

Hello just thought I'd say hello, this is my first time using any kind of forum. I'm 25 from Sydney Australia, been training for about 4 years, pretty hard for the past year and a half. I'm about 5'8 and weigh 101kg currently bulking and hoping to compete earliest May 2010 as a novice. My main aim is to come in as conditioned as possible, this will be hard as I have never done this and I'm pretty scared/nervous but I know I can do it. So yeah that's a bit about me thanks for reading

Sgvbaseball,

We've met a few times although I am all “outside the fence” now. For the record, I have, over the course of the last four or five years, referred families to you as a provider of baseball “services”.

I can usually be found on the “hill” with the Bergara's during the Glendora tourney games or next time you come to watch Gelalich play, have his Pop point me out.

sgvbaseball and sgvbasebal.com are me. The SGV post was not me. We have no intention on the Spring league in the IE. I am just wondering what part of the post was directed toward us. Yes, exposure is such an overused word. There are so many variables to get a players name out there. The one thing people lose sight on the "exposure" word is you still have to perform. All the colleges in the world can be watching and if you do not perform at a level the are looking for then they will pass. Don, Have we met? If not, I hope we do soon. You are rather informed about HS sports in the SGV.

I thought it was to the sgvbaseball.com but there appears to be another sgv in the baseball bizz. My comments stand, but I apologize for any confusion caused by my incorrect assumption.

“When refering to SGV joining this endeavor what program are you meaning?
Posted by: sgvbaseball.com | February 4, 2009 8:53 PM “

I'm interested in this too. Who exactly is sgv?

no clue said:

I would imagine some parents get tired of kids transfering in and taking spots away. So I can see why those kids would jump on the chance to play somewhere else.

sgvbaseball said:

Don, what Mike are you refering too?

sgvbaseball.com said:

When refering to SGV joining this endeavor what program are you meaning?

Don said:

Seriously Mike, that “exposure” thing needs to be exposed as nothing but a buzzword for delusional parents. You don't really think there is a core of talent out there waiting to be exposed to big league scouts do you? Or that suddenly, colleges will find ways to schollie more than 11 kids. Tell me it ain't so, I always thought you were sharper than that.

That's not to say you and Spiers won't be awash in kids, you will be. Hope springs eternal in the heart of every baseball mommy and daddy come this time of year, seemingly forever. What you won't have, is much talent since they will all be playing with the school team. Which brings me to your two BIG problems.

First problem is talented staff. You already know that a goatee and four pair of under armour shorts can't turn a former JC player into a coach. It might work on the kiddie players, but HS kids see through them quick. The old Hollenbeck retreads won't get you far either, too tired and too little to teach.

Second is what do you tell the mommies and daddies of these kids in May when 95% of the HS players are done with their season and want to come back for the exposure they have been paying for all along. YIKES!

No worries guys, plenty of exposure to go around

no clue said:

Several schools have outstanding reputations for their programs. I have heard the same complaints about some travel ball clubs as well. Is it the school, club team or parent?

SGV said:

SGV will most likely follow ABD in this endeavor to have a place for ball players that just want to play ball. You that say "pay to play" players..... You are not thinking this through. Are you not paying for spirit packs, fundraisers etc... in High school? Some are buying batting cages and many ther things for their highschool so their kid can play. Anywhere a kid can get some exposure is where a kid should be and if you don't feel like your highschool coach is going to give you the exposure you need then play somewhere you can be seen.
Is your highschool coach playing the best players that deserve the exposure?

ABD said:

Think about this. A HS coach has a "god" complex going on and decides that he doesn't like little Johnny or Jack. Maybe little Johnny or Jack's parents speak out a little too loudly at the booster meetings or Johnny and Jack are not the fall in line typical mold players, whatever the scenario. Now Johnny and Jack are both terrific ball players but just not hitting off with their coach and their coach is inclined to make an example out of these kids by limiting their involvement on the team. Would it be such a bad thing to have a place to play, to have a place to be seen or an alternative venue to continue to show their abilities on the diamond? This provides an alternative for athletes that find themselves on the wrong end of a raw deal. Trust me, if a player doesn't have the talent to play on their own Varsity squad, An ABD team won't risk their reputation to have him on theirs, let alone recommend him to a scout. This could be very good for this type of athlete.

This is the league for kids like Aaron Orona. Ones that can't stay at one school longer than a month or not wanted by schools.

Brahma Country said:

Don,

Great post your right on the money!

Don said:

ABD's teams and teaching are well thought of but it ought to be noted that this league is intended for kids who didn't make their School teams. Good luck 'splainin to your HS Coach about missing the JV or Frosh season to play with a pay to play club.

In other words, folks who think that their little superstar has been discriminated against by the local HS Coach can now, for a nominal $100 monthly fee, send him off to play in a Spring “Travel League” against similarly disaffected children.

I predict endless success for this endeavor since we all know that there is no end to the kids who ought to be playing “at the next level” but aren't.

Thanks to Joe Amat for graciously restating my point less my inherent smartaleckness.

To the DB fan, my apologies. I feel your frustration in a more personal way than you can know. I have come to grips with the reality of living with the LANG coverage system, such as it is, devised by Fred J's bosses. Like Joe, I don't agree with it, although I sort of understand it.

The real problem is that the prep coverage in the various papers varies from the Trib's, (still pretty strong), to the Whittier Daily News and Inland Empire Daily Bulletin, (a bit less), with the Star somewhere in between. (IMEHO)

This leaves many fans whose favorite team is covered by more than one paper, (see gripes by Rosemead fans), to either pick one and hope for the best or follow both, (my less than satisfactory choice). Since I don't see anyone in the newspaper business stepping up and increasing support for coverage of anything anytime soon, I suppose I have to settle for things the way they are.

Now excuse me, I have to call Todd Rogers and tell him he doesn't have to give the Brown kid those extra seeds.

Joe Amat said:

D.B.,

Re-read the part of Don's post that says,

"As to the attention or lack of attention he has received from the Trib you may want to note a couple of things. First, Diamond Bar High School is in a “dual coverage” area for Prep coverage by the Los Angeles Newspaper Group. This is true for most of the Pomona High Schools, DBHS, Diamond Ranch, Bonita, San Dimas, and Damien...."
and
"...Well that was YOUR area. The area on the other side of the 57 is shared by a whole other bunch of schools including, as you have noted, Charter Oak, Amat, and Northview. OK?"

There. Now it referees to DB in general... not G.B specifically. Still explains the situation and why you feel the way you do.

Personally, IMO, dual recognition should be eliminated to avoid that confusion. A player/school should be eligible for recognition in only ONE of the LANG papers and should not overlap. They can be *covered* when something is newsworthy and when they play an area team - but rankings and All-Area should be separate.

D.B. said:

Don, This is not Mr. Brown! Gary Brown was the EXAMPLE!!!!!! NOT the topic you retards!!!!! Do you really think Gary's Dad would do this? Come on you fools!!!!! This was to make a point ONLY!!!!! Don, I thought you were smarter than that! My frustration with the lack of coverage for Diamond Bar became Gary Brown and his dad wanting more coverage? The point all along is and was Diamond Bar doesn't get fair coverage plain and simple! you petty old men turn it into The Browns wanting press?????? I'm done with you small minded fools!

Don said:

Dear Mr. Brown,

You have every right to be proud of your boy, he has developed into a fine baseball player. I have emailed Todd to put some extra seeds in his locker and to be certain they don't run out of his favorite color gatorade.

As to the attention or lack of attention he has received from the Trib you may want to note a couple of things. First, Diamond Bar High School is in a “dual coverage” area for Prep coverage by the Los Angeles Newspaper Group. This is true for most of the Pomona High Schools, DBHS, Diamond Ranch, Bonita, San Dimas, and Damien. Remember when the Inland Valley named Gary to the all area team? Well that was YOUR area. The area on the other side of the 57 is shared by a whole other bunch of schools including, as you have noted, Charter Oak, Amat, and Northview. OK?

I don't know why the LANG seems so reluctant to share all of this; maybe they are afraid of losing a few bucks in newsstand business. Anyway, just enjoy your kid's success.

And relax.

DB Fan,
Obviously you haven't read by Prep Stars: Where are you now? blog. I was all over Brown, tracking what he did last year. And when the season starts next month, I will provide updates, just like I do for other former area athletes.
Also to be noted, that if anyone here is going to pump up the Cal State Fullerton baseball team, it's me!

I HAVE TO AGREE, QUIT BEGGING FOR THE ATTENTION AND LEARN FROM THE JOE AMAT HATERS, NOBODY WANTS TO READ A BOOK ON HERE. NOW MY SUGGESTION IS TALK TO THE COACH AND SEE IF HE CAN GET YOUR SCHOOL SOME LUVIN. NOW IF YOU ARE THAT KID'S PARENT - YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME AT HIS AGE? IF YOU ARE THE KID HIMSELF - YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME, HOW DESPERATE ARE YOU? GOOD POINT MADE EARLIER AND THAT WAS LET THEM TALK ABOUT YOU INSTEAD OF HOLDING UP THE SIGN 'MY KID IS #1'. MAYBE THERE IS A REASON NO ONE IS GIVING THE KID SOME PRINT BUT ULTIMATELY ASK THE COACH TO LOOK INTO IT - YOU JUST LOOK PATHETIC AND NEEDY.

What's embrassing? that Diamond Bar has had talent that has never been printed by the Tribune? Come on I read about all these players ranked so high in the SGV and never hear about them again.

Colin Lockett had little coverage and he's going to San Diego State. I can list 10 guys the paper covered over & over again that have gone NO WHERE. If you think pointing out the facts is embrassing so be it! Diamond Bar is part of the SGV and has been ignored year after year. I posted Gary Brown's Bio from CSF to prove he's legit and from DBAR.

I don’t recall what Charter Oaks open dates were for football next year, however, I just read in the Times that Notre Dame is scambleing to fill at least 3 open dates in their football schedule for next year.

Those dates include weeks two, four and five, and that’s because Anahiem servite dropped them from their schedule. Interesting.

Anyway, the point here is that the pundits have been clamoring for Charter Oak to play a quality opponent because of the fact that they seem to be dodging Amat. Here is a great opportunity for them to do step up and show the SGV just how good they are without playing Amat in a game.

A game such as that would go along way to establish their claim (along with the SGV Tribunes) as being the top team in the Valley.

If we ever meet on the sidelines we can compare CV's.

As for the Pedroza-Mier-Ibarra thing goes, only time will tell. College and MLB SS's are usually a bit bigger than Richie, and Ibarra for that matter. Mier on the other hand projects as a definite big league prospect at the position, quite probably in the money round.

BTW, hmmm, you may want to reread what I wrote. I didn't “compare a shortstop to a teams pitching staff” but was referring to ONE SINGLE INDIVIDUAL PITCHER, however good he may be. That's what we were talking about anyway, right? My assertion was that a single position player, (usually a shortstop or catcher), can effect more games over the course of a typical HS season than can ONE SINGLE INDIVIDUAL PITCHER can. It still is.

Great points Covering all bases. Don are you a High School Coach or former Coach? You act as if everything you say is gospel. Pitching is the heart and soul of baseball to compare a shortstop to a teams pitching staff is well....stupid.

Don,
I tend to agree with you on some things, but not the ss top 3.
Best upside- runs fast, hits for power is Jio, but a certain team from the North has his number don't they?

Good shortstop, but below the top 2 is Ibarra.

Best defensive SS right now without a doubt, Pedroza. He also hits too, but as a SS, not close.

Covering all bases said:

Don, most "Ace" pitchers are also position players. If a head Coach isn't willing to name their "Ace" now a couple weeks before season....When will they?

Mean Joe Greene, Let Coaches name their "Ace" not Fred!

Don said:

C.a.b.:

Thanks for the baseball primer, I'll try to remember.

While you are dismissing the everyday field players, you may want to consider that even the most dominant High School pitcher works only about 1/3 of his team's games, guy's like Miers and Ibarra effect the outcome of them all.

One of the problems with the pitcher thing is some teams don't have one, most have at least one they'll point to although just between you and me, the quality varies greatly. Some schools have two or even three and maybe the coach doesn't want to name one or the other as his “Ace” just yet.

Mean Joe Greene said:

Fred,

It's no secret pitching is the key but we don't need pitchers from every school. Why not pick your own top 5 pitchers from the SGV and put them on the cover.

Basic said:

How about the school logo's of all the teams that won CIF championships last year?

Covering all bases said:

Don, the discussion is what should be on the cover page for the baseball opener. You can have the best shortstop in the world without pitching your shortstops look like every other player. When a team is pounding on your pitcher and balls are flying right thru your infield, does it really matter who's playing short?

Don said:
