Baseball: Doubleheader on Monday
Ortega Family Fundraiser
Monday, Jan. 19, Azusa Pacific University
Charter Oak vs. Covina, 2 p.m.
Northview vs. South HIlls, 5 p.m.

When Northview coach Darren Murphy called to say the four Covina High School baseball coaches were getting together to create a charity game for the Ortega Family, who had nine family members tragically murdered on Christmas Eve, it was moving to say the least. They will play on Monday, Jan. 19, on Martin Luther King Day at Azusa Pacific University. There will be a $2 donation, but of course you can leave more. All snack bar proceeds also benefit the family. To start things off, Charter Oak, Northview, Covina and South Hills all have donated $150 each, so already there's a pot of $600 and growing. We're covering the doubleheader on Monday, but the score won't be in Tuesday's newspaper. It doesn't matter. To use a soccer term, "it's a friendly." I don't need rosters, I'm not keeping a book, I'm just going to watch baseball. But it got me thinking, in the years that follow, with four great baseball traditions in Covina, it would be great if the four schools got together in this kind of format in the future. You could call it the "Ortega Memorial tournament." But on Monday, it's a charity game, the way it should be. And as a Covina resident myself, it would be great to see APU packed.

Read information on the benefit in todays LA Times with TJ Simers. I think this thing is going to be really big.

This story touches us all somehow, someway. So horrible to think something so horrific could hit this close to our homes. Do something kind, pray for this family, help anyway you can, and why not come and check out a few great games while at it. You do us proud Covina coaches, well done.

This is a great cause for the Ortega Family. Great job coaches. I can tell you that Bishop Amat will be playing in a tournament this weekend at the Univeristy of San Diego.
We played and beat Loyola last weekend at Maverick Field. I can tell you it was a sloppy game by both teams. The pitching was a bright spot for the team. Leading the way was Paez. Cuevas and Fitzgerald also threw well. Hitting the ball well for the Lancers was Ruiz, McCraney, Zuniga, McClanahan and a sophomore catcher (sorry don't know his name). Amat made quite a few errors on the field. Amat will sure have a few bumps along the road.

FWIW: To those who wish to donate and can't make the game.
Donations to benefit the Ortega family can be sent directly to the Ortega Family Fund, care of the Law Offices of Scott Nord, 500 N. Brand Blvd., suite 550, Glendale, CA, 91203
We're trying to see how many kids from the team we can wrangle into attending. Teenagers are sooo easily swayed with a couple of dogs and a coke. ;{)>

hey people are asking if checks can be written? My company wants to donate and I can take a check to the game. will that be a problem?

Fred are you going to have any interviews with any baseball coachs in the SGV? How about twice a week? Tournaments for pre-season are just a few weeks away....Let's hear what the coachs have to say about their players and team as a whole. What do you think?
