Bishop Breakdown: Serra getting tougher?

I got some information from last night’s Catholic Athletic Association meeting for football re-leaguing, where a serious discussion broke out in regards to making the Serra League arguably the toughest league in the Southern Section. Basically it was proposed that Oaks Christian and St. Bonaventure join the Serra along with Notre Dame, Crespi, Bishop Amat and Loyola to form a mammoth six-team league in 2010. The first round of official proposals are due on March 11, the second round of proposals due on April 8, with a final decision on April 29. Stay tuned.

Another great Amat Video …

The rumors are flying, Sanders ain’t denying

I get all call this morning from one of Duarte’s biggest boosters, telling me that Lavelle “Tip” Sanders is interested in taking over at Duarte. My first thought is he would work and do wonders, if Duarte is willing to take on a walk-on coach, because Sanders doesn’t have a credential, he’s a security guard who happens to be one of the best coaches in the Valley. There’s no arguing that. When I was working at the Star-News, I watched him take a nothing team at Marshall and turn them into league champs and a CIF semifinal appearance. Everyone watched him take lowly Blair to the Rio Hondo League title and quarterfinal appearance in just his second season at the school in 2007, earning Star-News coach of the year honors. Tip is a no-nonsense coach that demands respect, and if he doesn’t get it, you won’t play for him, period. He didn’t coach anywhere this past season, and speaking honestly like he always does, he said his first preference is Pasadena. He’s been an assistant there off and on for many years, and that’s his dream job. But he also like’s the thought of Duarte. Here’s a little Q & A from our conversation. To read it, click thread

Nogales cheerleaders are the best

I’m not talking about cheer tournaments and trophies, I’m talking about the best cheer at games, period. I don’t know how many Monster or Red Bull’s it takes to do what they do, but they’re entertaining. I found this video to show one one of their tricks, but it still doesn’t do them justice. This is sure a lot better than other cheer teams that rarely leave the bench.

Hoops Thread: DRanch wins, 63-46

Diamond Ranch 63, Nogales 46 — The Panthers duo were simply too much as 6-foot-10 center Chris Cunningham had 21 points and 17 rebounds and Garrett Johnson finished with a game high 27 points, hitting four-of-five from the 3-point range. Aaron De Anda had 12 for Nogales and Randal Guillory finished with 13.

Sierra League
Glendora 52, Ayala 38
Diamond Bar 62, Damien 45

Above: Nogales coach Ricky Roper has his team ready for the big game.

We may not have a CIF tournament in the San Gabriel Valley, but in our little Tribune Poll, this is for all the marbles, for the undisputed top ranking in the San Gabriel Valley. No. 1 Diamond Ranch (16-4) is hosting No. 2 Nogales (17-5) at 6:30 p.m.

Fred’s pick: We haven’t seen the best of Nogales yet, I’ve been so impressed with their starting lineup and overall depth. My guess is there will be a new No. 1 when the night is over. Nogales by 3.
